Bummer.......2007-07-29
Not sure if this other reviewer has been a long time Over it fan or not but this album was a diappointment...pure and simple. "Against the Grain" is good along with a couple of so-so's. Point is, Over it is an awesome band, especially their early-mid work ie)Timing is everything. I was unbelievably stoked to get this and preordered it only to be crushed. Anyone agree with me? Maybe it needs more listens but I just can't get into it. I can only hope this is just a misfire.
Over It - Step Outside Yourself.......2007-07-09
Stolen from another site and I agree with it to the T.
"The best way to describe Over It's major label debut Step Outside Yourself is as a giant coming out party for everyone involved. The vocals are strong and impressive, the lyrics are poignant and refreshing, the guitars are predominately displayed, the bass is powerful, the drums blistering, and the production flawless. Every single aspect of this album is a step above everyone's past work and in reaching this new plateau the album sits a step above their peers as well.
The time is ripe, the stage is set, and the curtains drawn. If there was ever a time when the phrase "the next big thing" was perfectly fitting - that time would be now."

Album Description
It's easy to understand the explosive collegiate popularity of folk-rock phenom The Schuers, once you hear their layered acoustics punctuated by sax, spiky electric guitar, and the contrapuntal lead vocal exchanges of the Schuer siblings. Step Outside also benefits from a guest appearance by Derek Webb of Caedmon's Call.

Great Music.......2005-06-21
I Have Listened To Both CDs That Have Been Released By The Schuers And I Have Loved Their Music Since I Did. I Am Reminded of DMB When I Listen To Them, But They Still Have A Diffrence From DMB In Their Music. I Have To Say, I Havent Heard Of These Guys Around PA, And I'm Supprised I Havent. This Band And CD Have A Spot In Music Talent Waiting For Them. Dont Miss Out On The Band That Few People Know, But For Those That Do Know Of Them They Would All Tell You The Same Thing. BUY THIS CD!! You Wount Be Sorry You Did.
Amazing.......2004-02-23
I first found out about "The Schuers" when I attended Camp Akita 2 years ago (they did a special concert there for High School students) and I thought they were amazing. Their music is very deep and soothing, good for when you want to relax. The lyrics are very beautiful and true to life as well. A great buy.
A band on the verge.......2003-09-08
One word to describe this band and this cd, WOW!!! How often can you honestly say that you like every song on a cd, not too often for me but I can say that I love 1-10 on this album including the hidden track. These guys are great with awesome vocal harmonies and catchy chord changes. Put these 7 guys together and you have got music at its best. It has to be very discouraging as a musician to see this band not make it big yet with an unbelievable album like this one. But I guarentee you will see these guys up there some day soon. I also guarente that if you buy this album, you will not be dissapointed.
You Will Believe.......2002-09-02
As a DJ, I often listen to the worst music ever recorded as an mp3 in the attempt to find great new talent. The Schuers have made that time well spent!
These acoustic rockers remind me of the Pat McGee Band, Dave Mathews, and Dispatch. Their lyrics are catchy, but thought provoking. The harmonies will echo memories of lost loves and your best hopes. The song "Believe" is good enough to get these guys a major deal. I hope it happens.
I look forward to interviewing the band on radio.babson.edu on Thursday September 12 @ 6pmEST. Listen to the interview, and then buy the CD!

Gotta Hear 'Em!.......2002-08-27
You've just gotta hear these guys! Okay, so I'm rooting for the hometown boys, but I'm telling you one day these guys will be BIG!!! The vocals are phenomenal... as brothers, the two main vocalists have an uncanny sense of just how to compliment each other's talents. This is especially apparent when you see them perform in person. I've never written an online review in my life, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to brag on this band. Buy thier CD and see for yourself.

A great selection of various "TEXAS MUSIC" artists! A must have! Especially for the Texas outdoorsman. A good listen on the way to the hunting camp. If you truly love Texas the song Keep Texas Beautiful pulled from Jerry Jeff Walker's "VIVA LUCKENBACH!" live album will actually bring tears to your eyes. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
An Exceptional Up and Coming Talent.......2000-12-08
We had occasion to purchase this CD from Colleen personally at a live performance. We really just happened to visit a coffeehouse one evening where she was featured and were delighted to be able to see and hear such and engaging and entertaining singer-songwriter. She was charming, funny, witty and soulful... and she grabbed your attention from beginning to end. We chatted with her after the show and were even more impressed with her friendly down-to-earth personality. And when we listened to the CD at home, we truly loved it. Colleen's music is definitely worth a listen, and you should try to catch her live, up close and personal before she is a major star playing packed arenas where she will be so far away from you, she will look only 2 inches tall.
This is a great CD.......2000-02-20
Step Outside is a great CD. Colleen Sexton is a great talent. The record is kinda bluesy, kindy of rock & roll, kinda folk rolled up into one. Its got fun little songs like I'm Leavin and Dear Arlene along with a real nice Garden of Eden. My favorite on the record is "In Between" Nice song! And # 6 (the bonus track), I don't want to give away what the song is but when you hear it you'll love it. She does a great job on this oldie but goodie. But beyond the record, check Colleen out live. She puts on a great show, is very down to earth and brings the audience into her show by encourging sing-a-longs, talking with them between songs, etc. She has tremendous vocal range, beautiful lyrics to her songs, does great covers, has many wonderfully written originals, etc., etc. She is an up and coming talent, see her now before long she'll be playing much bigger venues. Can't wait for the next CD by Colleen Sexton and the next show!

Only so-so except for knockout Prince cover Sometimes April!.......2005-03-19
The album and her voice do grate a bit, but...worth the price of admission if only for her stunning, Guy Sigworth-produced remake of Prince's "Sometimes It Snows in April" from Parade/Under A Cherry Moon - her phrasing, the beat, the strings, the climax...it works and then some. Simply amazing stuff.
Amazing vocalist, all-around good debut CD.......2003-05-27
In late 1997 as a fourteen year old I purchased Talvin Singh's "Anokha Soundz of the Asian Underground" CD and immediately upon hearing track one "Jaan" sung by Amar (Who, as the same age as myself, was only fourteen when she recorded it.) was astounded! Indeed, I credit my sustained and intense love of the South Asian Music coming out of Britain to Amar's magnificent voice and Talvin Singh's ingenuity .
While I had read in various publications about a rumoured Album by the still very young and new to the scene Amar, I avoided buying the CD for three years---generally on the basis of rarity and very high import costs. However, after discovering this CD at a much cheaper price from another retailer I decided to reacquaint myself with the voice that had meant so much to my own cultural evolution.
Very few reviews of this album are currently available on the internet, however, from what I have gathered most critiques though definitely certain of Amar's immense potential believe that her style of vocal delivery and some of the English lyrics are still gaining their maturity and perspective. I agree. Songs like "Sometimes It Snows in April" and "Maybe" while partnered with amazing arrangements that blend the electronica of England's "Jungle" "Drum & Bass" etc sounds with more "traditional *" instruments ie Tabla, Sitar, Harmonium etc the lyrics backing them up at times sound down-right childish or odd. One stand out to all this being the tracks "The World", and "After Sunset" which both in delivery and sound have a gorgeous pretence of tranquillity about it
Other commentaries have also stated the Amar's vocals sound more on key and natural in Hindi---most Definitely true. I have (what I consider, especially as a person of non-Desi but Hindu/Sikh origin) the privilege of being fluent in Hindi and I find her vocalisation, emphasis and delivery awesome in Hindi. Amar's rendition of the Bhajan* "Tere Bina" is perhaps the best I have heard sung by anyone. "Red Sky" produced by Nitin Sawhney ( SA underground artist perhaps equalling Talvin Singh in genius and skill) is incredible in the usage of technology, crafty production and solid vocals---resulting in a song that could double as a Bhangra/Desi party favourite nonetheless has merit without such promotion
Amar's album is a fantastic product of the amazing inter-cultural blends of music arising out of second generation Asian Artists. This is a wonderful debut from an artist who is still finding her musical niche while simultaneously maintaining a solid footing in a hybrid cultural identity.
*I use "traditional" loosely because these instruments may have their origins and sounds in South Asia but have been nearly reinvented in diasporic Desi music.
*Hindu Hymn

Customer Reviews:
Nostalgia at its finest.......2000-04-25
"Step Outside" is one of Oyster Band's earliest publishings. The Irish sound is evident, but lead singer John Jones has a teeny weeny scrawny sound to his voice, far from the deep dark and melodious Jones of later recordings. The general sound of this publication is ...with all respect... awful.
However, the songs and lyrics are both captivating and thought-inducing, songs like "My Dog", and "The Old Dance" full of foot-tapping rhytm goodness.
Bottom Line: If you are into The Oysters, this is both a funny and nostalgia-arousing must have item. If you are not an avid fan, get something newer, anything from "Holy Bandits" to the newest stuff.
