Customer Reviews:
It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10
This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).
The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.
Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.
I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.
If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."
If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.
I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.
I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.
My Favorite Composer of all time.......2006-08-20
Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..
I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour
but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..
An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17
Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.
In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.
OMG!!! More than 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars, one of the best album in the world!!!.......2005-11-25
Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.
It's simply lovely.......2004-12-14
I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.
This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Relaxing - What Society Needs.......2007-05-15
Prior to watching this movie with our 9 year old daughter, we had watched, a few days earlier, "Boondoggle Saints", which our 18 year old had said was a "great" movie. That movie was filled with nothing but voilence, blood, and terrible language. It made me think what was wrong with our society.
We then had the pleasure to watch this movie, and it made me think about the better parts of our society, and the innocence of young minds.
I was so impressed with the music, I went out and got the soundtrack the next day. While the theme song is repeated with various alterations on the CD, is rates a 5 star, plain and simple, for it's soothing effect. It makes one sit back, and think and recall about the good things in life. I for one cannot get enough of the music. The various instruments used are awesome. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for relaxing, uplifiting music.
Simply beautiful and soothing soundtrack!.......2006-06-17
This delightful soundtrack brings the listener back to a more peaceful, easy feeling(Thank you Eagles). Perfect to listen to after a hard days work, or in my case to listen to while at work at my home based business. Usually, I'll purchase a soundtrack, be disappointed and rarely listen to it again. In the case of "Dreamer," I can listen to it over and over again and no matter how hectic things may be, I feel at peace with the world.
WOW , did I say WOW ?.......2006-04-09
I listen to the track as I am on the PC working. Soothing songs, super violins, and just one of the best Soundtracks ever.
THe movie was great and Dakota Fanning is probably the best actress out there, young or older. So the music matches her and the actors personality.
Gentle, lovely little score from Debney..........2005-10-20
This album is, perhaps, exactly what you'd expect it to be, but it's nonetheless enjoyable. It borrows pages not only from familiar horse-related scores from Thomas Newman ("The Horse Whisperer") and Danny Elfman ("Black Beauty"), but also from such James Horner efforts as "Bicentennial Man" and "Legends of the Fall". The main theme actually sounds quite similar to Alan Silvestri's "Cast Away". The music is well-crafted, and maintains a peaceful, gentle, lullaby-like tone throughout, with the exception of a few exuberant orchestral bursts and some acoustic guitar work that's quite spunky. Adding quite a bit to the proceedings is acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell, who sadly isn't featured as much as his should be. If my comments sound just a tad negative, perhaps it's because this score is so often so derivative. But on it's own, as a listening experience, it's beautiful, gentle, and soothing, and I would absolutely recommend it for the casual film score fan looking for a break from the usual bombast. The only real detractor is the somewhat annoying teen-pop song tacked on at the end, it breaks up the musical flow of things. This score represents a solid effort from Debney, who continues to mature and improve, and a winner of a score, especially for fans of the gentler work of Horner and T. Newman.

Product Description

Customer Reviews:
thanks again, naxos!.......2007-04-04
naxos is the greatest budget label of all-time. i've gotten so many great discs from them, and never a bummer. as for this disc, it's a great idea(arrangements of the songs of stephen foster for 19th century brass band, performed on period instruments), wonderfully executed. i have many recordings of stephen foster material, and this is one of the best. this brass band sounds fantastic and the audio quality is very very fine. i highly recommend that you make this a part of your household.
Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20
Imagine a post-Civil War family trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening to hear the town band play a concert of arrangements of popular tunes, that gentler period's equivalent of a rock concert of today. That's essentially what we have here. The Chestnut Brass Company, a Philadelphia brass quintet which on occasion plays on everything from Baroque sackbuts to the most modern trumpets and trombones, here plays on instuments of the saxhorn family. Saxhorns, invented by Adolphe Sax, the fellow who also invented the better-known saxophone, are brass instruments perfected in the 1840s. Their conical bore projects a uniquely sweet and mellow sound. They were exceedingly popular for town bands during the latter half of the century, but their use had waned by the turn of the 20th century. This quintet consists of an E flat soprano, a B flat soprano, an E flat alto, a B flat baritone, and a E flat contrabass saxhorn. The dulcet tones and sonic blend are a marvel to behold. Partly, of course, this is due to the expert playing by Bruce Barrie, Susan Sexton (or is it SAXton?), Marian Hesse, Larry Zimmerman, and Jay Krush.
Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.
As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.
Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.

Absolutely the BEST Lullaby CD.......2006-01-05
I bought this CD before our son was born and played it to him in the womb. He is now 18 months old and expects his CD to be started at naptime and bedtime without fail! We even have to pack it when we travel to visit Grandparents out of state! This is an incredibly soothing CD, even if I still haven't learned all of the words! Highly recommended for every parent!
Not the usual lullabies........2000-08-17
This is a wonderful lullaby collection that is also a change of pace. The songs are not the standards to which you probably know all the words...there are even a couple of beautiful foreign-language songs. The vocals are also different -- not the usual soprano, but a richer, lower tone. I often play this CD when rocking my baby to sleep and it's a nice change from my other favorite (Beautiful Dreamer by the Dreamsisters).

Not a Lullaby at All!.......2003-09-10
I can't give this CD anything but a 2. It was certainly NOT the Ultimate Lullaby. And although the music is beautiful I would not put my baby to sleep with this. I'm not a fan of opera and perhaps if I listen a bit more that may change. Our daughter listens to music every night. It is so hard to buy music sometimes and I went out on a limb with this one. I really wish it had stated that there were vocals - I much prefer the music without.
Not for babies, but certainly for singers!.......2003-08-08
I bought this cd on a whim, and I got way more than I bargained for! I'm an opera singer and I absolutely love the assortment of gorgeous ballads - lots of classics and old favorites. I agree this might not be the best music to lull and infant to sleep, but it's a great way to build your child's appreciation for operatic vocals. I highly recommend this cd singers - specifically sopranos. It's a diamond in the rough.
Caveat emptor.......2002-10-21
I'm in violent agreement with the other reviewers who remarked that this CD is not for the purpose of lulling baby to sleep, in spite of its misleading title. A1-opera-grade sopranos and mezzos sing most of the selections and their vocal dynamics range from pianissimo to a house-shaking fortissimo. The only track where baby might catch a bit of shut-eye is Puccini's "Humming Chorus" from "Madama Butterfly."
Try "Celtic Lullaby" if you're looking for a truly sleep-inducing CD.
"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" contains a wonderful assortment of Marilyn Horne and Leontyne Price solos, which is all to the good if you're not trying to snooze. My two favorites are the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" sung by Price (I don't think there is a more perfect rendition), and Bach's "Bist Du bei Mir" sung by Horne in her rich, smooth, chocolate-y prime.
Unfortunately another grand voice is not at its prime in "When You Wish upon a Star." I'd guess Dame Joan was near the end of her stellar (sorry) career when she recorded this Disney song. Her vibrato stretches as wide as Dumbo's behind.
Another rather odd selection is the only instrumental arrangement on this CD: "O Danny Boy" as rendered by the English Chamber Orchestra, with a trombone as the lugubrious solo instrument. It's long enough and trite enough to be used as the soundtrack for that tacky sequel to "Gone with the Wind."
"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" is definitely not for baby's room. If you want your kid to grow up listening to "Londonderry Air," get Kiri Te Kawana's version. It'll prickle up the hair on the back of your neck if you can find it. I can't. I wore out my original tape and have fruitlessly searched the Internet for a new copy. If anyone out there in Amazon land has a recording of Dame Kiri singing folksongs of the British Isles, please consider selling it to me.
Ultimate Lullaby Album.......2002-06-01
The music is superb. Although it would not be used to put the baby to sleep, it is a wonderful choice for one-to-one relaxing time with baby.
An excellent addition to the new baby's music collection. I listened to it with my class in school before giving it to my brand new grandson. I now give it as a gift to all newborns.
Is there a dispute?.......2002-01-12
3 music fans gave different ratings. 2 said it's diappointing, the other said they were ridiculous. I bought and listened to this CD. I feel great about my purchase. These are good music, and there should not be a dispute. If one is disappointed because of the opera voice, blame it on Decca's label "Ultimate Lullaby". The music deserves my 5-satr rating.

Somewhat disappointed.......2006-07-05
I love Stephen Foster's songs. This CD left out a few of his familiar songs, but had a few that were not composed by him. Therefore the title is misleading. Although the choir was fine, I would like it better if they interpreted songs differently, reflecting characteristics of each song. Also I consider not having lyrics included in the CD a glaring omission.

Customer Reviews:
A superb sampler of cool, calm and casual Perry Como Standards!.......2006-08-19
This collection is a very nice sampler of what a superb vocalist Perry Como really was. Having only 9 tracks on it, this CD is far too short to define Perry Como's Recordings from this period, though!
This CD has a few selected tracks from some of Perry's 1960's RCA Victor albums: 'By Request', 'The Songs I love', 'The Scene Changes', 'Lightly Latin' and 'Look to your Heart'.
As always, every song is a gem. Superbly performed by a superb vocalist - Perry Como! Perry is backed by wonderful orchestral arrangements too!
If all you have heard by Perry Como is songs like 'Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)', I suggest you purchase this CD! The novelty songs are all made classy by Mr. C, but he recorded a much larger variety of music than that!
The sound quality is also pleasing and although 1st Generation Masters haven't been used, 2nd Generation Masters have - which are the next best thing - and I have to say that the sound is excellent!
This is a CD release of Perry's 1973 RCA Camden Album 'Dream on little Dreamer' - in full. RCA Camden were a budget division of the highly respected RCA.
As RCA Camden are a budget label, the recording sources they use aren't going to be of the highest standard. However, some of these songs are seldom released on CD. Even when they have been released they have either appeaed in Mono (when all these recordings are Stereo), sourced from Records (you could actually here the clicks/pops from the vinyl and the poor attempts used to filter them out - making the songs sound muffled!) or the mastering has been unacceptable!
When releasing these RCA Camden Albums by Perry Como, they should really have put 2 albums on 1 CD. But! Nevertheless, the song selecting has been well done, all the songs used are relevant to the period, no songs are wildly out of place and the sound is very pleasing!
SUPERB LISTENING!
Matthew Long
(An enormous Perry Como fan of a much younger generation!)
Another sampler of Como standards!.......2000-02-14
A re-release of Perry's 1973 RCA Camden album, this nine song compilation really amounts to a sampler for several of Perry's 1960s albums including "By Request", "The Songs I Love", "Lightly Latin" and the title track from his very first Nashville album "The Scene Changes" ( and the hit single to boot ) recorded in February, 1965, plus two tracks from one of Perry's most beautiful albums "Look To Your Heart" recorded in 1968. With only 9 songs, this album is desperately short at less than 30 minutes in length. Very oddly, it's packaged within a box-set including two other Camden compilations "The Shadow of Your Smile" ( 1972 ) and "The Lord's Prayer" ( 1969 ) of which the latter is a peculiar combination within this set. Apart from the odd combination, however, none of the recordings appear to have been remastered from the original first generation tapes as is claimed. Nevertheless, on it's own this combination is a nice mix of contrasting songs from different albums. Perry's 1969 compilation "The Lord's Prayer" ( mostly recorded from the early 1950s ) would have been much better had it been remastered from original recordings and better combined with the 1956 monaural compilation "I Believe", marketed appropriately to a Christian audience and not combined with popular standards. For some peculiar reason, Delta has used all new graphics for these re-released albums and the photos are not only out of context ( as with this album, from almost a decade earlier ) but the pictures are mirror-image! Do they forget what Perry looks like? This very thing happened in 1957 with Perry's first RCA Camden release "Dream Along With Me" and, as the story goes, Perry raised the roof with RCA and made them re-print the album covers. While graphical errors hardly affect the performance, they represent a clear indication of Delta's care, or lack of it, in releasing these albums.
