5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

It's very rare that an artist can go back and recapture the essence of their debut album, no matter how skilled they are. The chef cooks up that special batch of songs comparable to his timeless classic, "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx"... since the sequel was announced, Hip Hop heads have been praying Rae can bring back the Wu like Ghostface did with "Supreme Clientele." Until then, Lex Diamonds offers a new mixtape, "House Of Wax: The Vatican Mixtape Volume III", to hold fans over. The material on "House Of Wax" is older (that vintage Wu/RZA sound), and has been previously never heard or released. Rae hand picked these joints, 31 tracks strong and purposely left untitled... featuring RZA production and guest shots from Wu Tang brethren, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Old Dirty Bastard, Masta Killa as well as Hip Hop royalty Havoc (Mobb Deep), Fat Joe & Smif N' Wessun. As long as Rae sustains such momentum and relies on the RZA for the majority of "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II", he could have another classic album in the books. Until then, "House Of Wax" is a nice appetizer until The Chef cooks up his main course.

5 out of 5 stars My First Kottke.......2007-02-14

This is the first Leo Kottke album I ever purchased when I discovered him in 1974. I was amazed at his ability and have amassed a collection of just about everything he's ever produced. He comes to my town every other year or so and I never fail to see him. "Ice Water" is one of my favorites, simply because it's such a mix, fantastic instrumentals and quirky vocals, especially Tom T. Hall's "Pamela Brown". No one can do this song quite like Leo with his "geese farting" voice. Leo is a treasure. His music is superb and his stories have no equal.

5 out of 5 stars music that survives the decades.......2006-08-08

Leo Kottke is amazing--and especially when you see him perform all that sound with a single guitar. I loved him when i was a 70's chick and i love his music today--true talent is timeless. I like his voice and it reminds me of Johnny Cash now that I hear him as an adult--and he couldnt'sing that perfect either! Thisis my favorite CD i guess because it's the one I listened to when I was in college and when I saw him in person in Oklahoma. One cut on a movie soundtrack today and he'd be out in front.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of the best.......2004-03-17

Personally I think Leo's at his best when playing straight acoustic 6 or 12 string guitar, which is by far the lesser part of this album. The guitar work is there on this album but it's diluted by a lot of heavy-handed production, excessive studio musicians, Leo's bad singing and often trite lyrics to top it off.

I suppose if you're a real Leo Kottke fan you'll put up with his singing but for me it's a detraction here. I also hate it when Garrison Keillor sings on his radio show so maybe that's indicative of something. The guitar playing would stand on its own just fine though.

Not to say that Mr Kottke should never sing - apparently at one point he had to cut the guitar dynamics for awhile because it hurt his hands, and some of his later work has much better lyrics and more of a personal touch, albeit with less guitar stuntwork. "That's What" as well as "Peculiaroso" are good examples of such. The music is quirky, funny and creative there.

Anyhow I think a lot of the other reviews of this album are written by forgiving Kottkeholics, which I'm really not one of. The more typical listener looking for a good intro to Kottke would probably be a lot happier with a classic like "Six & Twelve String Guitar" instead.

5 out of 5 stars One that I did not bring from NY.......2003-08-28

This is one disc that I did not pack when I moved to Houston. I had it on tape but a brother of mine loved it and you know that story. I don't understand why no one pushed the student prince cut as this is a great song and playing that only Leo can do.

    4 out of 5 stars outstanding guitar.......2002-02-17

I saw him live several years ago it was hard to believe that one man sitting on a stool all by him self could make that much music. He is the best acoustic player I have ever heard.

I don't care what anyone says about the current state of hip-hop. Album sales do NOT dictate what real music is, especially if you've been in the game 10 plus years. There's a clip on YouTube with Rae basically saying that he's not with the Jay-Z bandwagon. A lot of folks took it out of context. Anyway, with the mixtape, classic Rae at his best. Some of the songs are from other mixtapes, but they still tight. I have to get part 1 of the vatican mixtape. If you looking for that new york, new york state of mind type hip-hop, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Raekwon is Here to Save Hip Hop!!!.......2006-08-18

Raekwon's newest Mixtape is straight fire and is earning classic status among all the wise sages of hip hop. The god is dropping knowledge over some serious heated beats! With so much wackness in the hip hop game today, it's refreshing to see Masta Killa, Ghostface, and Raekwon bringing real hup hop back and getting NY back on top! I can't wait for Only Built for Cuban Links 2!

5 out of 5 stars Its really good.......2006-08-11

This mixtape has no flaws... It has everything you want from Rae, sick verses (especially the Rakim Trib.) & ill production. I loved this all the way through and if you are a wu tang head you need to get on this. A++

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Mixtape from RAE - 4.5 stars.......2006-08-08

Da Chef is back with a brand new mixtape for his fans who have been waiting for something new from Rae for the past 3+ years. With 19 songs/freestyles you get some of Rae to hold you over til he finally drops the long awaited "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... 2". Of the 19, about half dozen are 16 bar freestyles, guests rap songs on 4 and do the hook on 2 songs, and 3 of the songs on here are from other albums. Of the 19, 1 is a classic, 2 are near classic material, 5 are ok, the rest are good, a few are real good. A nice Wu album to add to the collection you should already have!

    Product Description

It's very rare that an artist can go back and recapture the essence of their debut album, no matter how skilled they are. The chef cooks up that special batch of songs comparable to his timeless classic, "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx"... since the sequel was announced, Hip Hop heads have been praying Rae can bring back the Wu like Ghostface did with "Supreme Clientele". Until then, Lex Diamonds offers a new mixtape, "The Vatican", to hold fans over. With a mix of classic verses and newer efforts, the mixtape will please long time Raekwon fans. While some of the material on The Vatican is older (that vintage Wu sound), Rae's joints from the past year prove he is as hungry as ever. The Scarface inspired "Baggage Handlers" finds J-Dilla doing his best RZA impersonation by utilizing a grimy loop that Rae rips to shreds. Busta also lends his vocals to the hook, by energetically proclaiming, "It's Cuban Linx 2 motherf***er!" "Thousands To M's" continues the heat, as Rae spits his usual assortment of vivid hood tales that transports you to the world he is depicting. But things get even iller on the Pete Rock produced "Kids That's Rich," which will have many fans fooled, as Pete's light and scattered keys don t fit the mold of what you would expect from the Chocolate Boy Wonder. Nevertheless, the combination of Pete and Raekwon works to perfection once again. With improved production, the aforementioned tracks are arguably better than most of the material on Rae's last two albums. As long as Rae sustains such momentum and relies on the RZA for the majority of "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx"...II, he could have another classic album in the books. Until then, The Vatican is a nice appetizer until The Chef cooks up his main course.

The Shoes Of The Fisherman was a wonderful film set at the height of the cold war between the Western nations and the Soviet Union. The film shows us a planet on the brink of war and chaos. China is headed towards starvation, and the world's superpowers are ready to engage in a battle that will mutually sure their own destruction. From the tumult emerges a Pope who aims to bring peace. And the film's climax should be a lesson for today's leaders about finding the courage to love and care for others regardless of the cost. The Shoes Of The Fisherman was wonderfully acted and shot. with a cast including screen legends Anthony Quinn, John Sir John Gielgud, and the great Sir Laurence Oliver. Add to this a moving soundtrack by Alex North and you have a near perfect film. I never thought that I would ever see this soundtrack on CD but here it is! And the producers have thrown in a couple of other scores by North as well. Probably the best piece in this collection is the 'Coronation' scene's music. It truly sounds as though it was written for the crowning of a Pope. It also reminds me a bit of the music of John Tavener.

One of the nicest features of this two disc set is the packaging and appearance. each disc is a 'picture disc' with different image of Quinn as Pope Kiril on each CD. And the liner notes contain all sorts of information and colour photos of the film. I wish all my favourite movies of this era (or any era for that matter) were given this sort of attention.

You may also notice on this 2-CD set that it is a limited edition of only a few thousand copies, making it a genuine collectors item. But if you miss out, fear not. works this great always find their way pack into reprinting. I think that will be the case with this glorious soundtrack to one of the greatest films of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, the kind of movie music nobody writes any more.......2006-06-08

I picked this up used after reading numerous rave reviews, and boy am I glad I did. Alex North is considered one of the greatest film composers, and his "Cleopatra" score is one of my first movie music memories.

This album presents the complete score to "Fisherman," which is filled with memorable themes and gorgeous orchestrations. Apparently North used elements of his score for "2001," which was rejected by Stanley Kubrick, in this film. It's a highly entertaining listen and displays a playful ease with the sounds of the orchestra that reminds me of John Williams at his best.

The sound can best be described as "Spartacus" meets "Doctor Zhivago." There's a heavy Russian influence, since that's where the film's Pope, played by Anthony Quinn, comes from. The epic music for the Vatican is powerful and stirring without feeling corny or lapsing into stereotypical "religious" sounds.

As if that's not good enough, the second disc also has the complete soundtrack album to "Where Eagles Dare," which I thoroughly enjoyed too.

The great advantage of using Amazon.com is one has an opportunity to listen to a sample of a CD prior to purchasing it. I did this with PRIME MERIDIAN. This opportunity caused me to purchase it.

I love the stylishness of the tracks on this CD. For me, the music has a calming effect. When I know that I am going to have a bad day at the office, I’ll listen to this CD while driving to work. When I arrive, I don’t feel so bad.

Listen to the samples that Amazon.com offers. If you find the music uplifting, buy it. You won’t regret it.
