Amazon.com essential recording

An album that defines virtually everything that is right about adult contemporary pop--and yes, there are a few things--Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind contains lush, orchestrated arrangements of songs by first-rate tunesmiths such as Jimmy Webb, Eric Kaz, Paul Carrack, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, Isaac Hayes, and Karla Bonoff. Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. Other highlights include "Adios," with multitracked background vocals by Brian Wilson, and the title song, which is driven to new heights by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. Beautiful stuff. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Just a Skein of Beautiful Rock Ballads.......2007-07-10

"Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind," upon its 1989 release, went triple platinum, selling better than three million copies, and proved to be one of Linda Ronstadt's all-time best sellers, in the third decade of her astonishing career. Ronstadt had won her first Grammy in 1975, on her way to selling more than 48 million albums in the United States and more than 70 million worldwide. "Cry," which was produced by Peter Asher, was a long-running Adult Contemporary #1 that won the singer Grammies in 1989, and 1990. No wonder: so many years into her career, it showcases her still singing with power, feeling and flexibility, still confidently hitting notes at the top of her range.

Ronstadt is widely considered the world's leading female rock and roll vocalist; the first rock diva that could fill an arena. She began her career with the Stone Poneys in the early 1960's -- I, for one, have a treasured vinyl single of her/their "A Different Drum," (written by Mickey Nesmith of the Monkees, meant for a male voice, and forever Ronstadt's). Nevertheless, she's still actively touring today. Try to catch her: I've been lucky enough to do so several times, most memorably her 1988 concert at New York's Town Hall in support of her Spanish language release of that year, "Candiones de mi Padre."

"Cry" includes four duets with Aaron Neville, unearthly in their beauty. There's Karla Bonoff's "All My Life," "Don't Know Much," by the Brill Building songsters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, and Isaac Hayes's "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby." "I Need You" actually rocks a bit: both singers can. "Still Within The Sound of My Voice,"an emotionally-laden rock ballad by Jimmy Webb, opens the record. Webb's "Adios," a lovely, melodic and lyrical, yet ironic California goodbye is also sung by the undoubted Queen of Los Angeles rock. (Brian Wilson, backbone of the Beach Boys, greatest of all California groups, arranged and sang backup here.) On the title song, "Cry," Ronstadt's voice is silky, yet expressive. The record closes with a haunting "Goodbye My Friend," another by Karla Bonoff. The vocalist does one more song by Bonoff, and two more by Jimmy Webb. She is backed at times by the Tower of Power horns, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra.

No effort or expense was spared, it appears, to make this record what it is: just one beautiful song after another.

5 out of 5 stars At Center Stage.......2007-04-21

Even from its well-executed art direction of the album package design, "Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind" deserves center stage. With 12 sumptuous tracks featuring a full orchestra and, at times, a massive choir, all recorded in George Lucas' state-of-the-art Skywalker Ranch, this is how an album ought to be made. Linda Ronstadt's voice is often at a zenith here. Ably abetted by the Tower Of Power Horns and the spine-tingling falsetto of the ever awesome Aaron Neville, all the songs are infused with a breathtaking quality that greatly compliments their original covers. The duets Don't Know Much and All My Life are so good, they practically have Grammy Awards written all over them. For lovers of gentler and kinder music, this one is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better..........2007-04-07

After a number of years of experimenting with a huge range of styles of music, from country to rock to Gilbert & Sullivan to the pop standards of the Nelson Riddle sessions and the Spanish-language music from her childhood, Linda Ronstadt re-imerged into the realm of pop/adult contemporary with one of the best pop albums ever made. CRY LIKE A RAINSTORM, HOWL LIKE THE WIND returned Ms. Ronstadt her place as the top interpreter of the singer-songwriter of the 20th century.

With songs by Jimmy Webb, Karla Bonoff, Paul Carrack and even Isaac Hayes, this album is a powerhouse of both songwriting and performance. The several duets with Aaron Neville rank as some of the finest performances of Ms. Ronstadt's career, and the emotional depth of the songs is staggering.

It simply is one of the greatest albums in the history of pop music. Everyone should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION .......2006-07-10

I have not bought any new Linda Ronstadt albums in twenty years , and if it were not for the internet I would not have even known there were any more out there! After listening to this one I have fallen in love with her music all over again! If you like Linda's music you will absolutely love this CD. I can't stop playing it. Thank you Linda.

San Francisco's Black Rebel Motorcycle Club weren't exactly shy about their taste for early `90s UK rock (Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Stone Roses), influences that freely permeated their debut and Take Them On, On Your Own. But Howl argues that B.R.M.C. understands how such devotion can often be a creative straightjacket, stripping their songs bare via almost exclusively acoustic arrangements that variously evoke gospel-tinged Appalachia and gritty country-blues ("Devil's Waitin', "Ain't No Easy Way," "Restless Sinner"), gentle, mouth-harp seasoned folk ("Fault Line") and vocalist Peter Hayes invoking various ghosts of Dylan past on "Still Suspicion Holds You Tight," "Promise," and "Complicated Situation." Indeed, in everything from its music and Allen Ginsburg-inspired title to the LP-deriv! ed running order and artwork, it's an album whose retro-'60s counter-culture vibe may be no less original than their previous musical obsessions, but one whose strong, mature songs and dedicated performances can't be denied. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars BRMC's departure into folksy blues... a fantastic trip.......2007-07-25

It's easy to understand why long time fans of BRMC would be put off by Howl. This is hardly their usual sound. If you bought the CD expecting the full on Brit rock sound they usually play, you were bound to be disappointed.

For me, on the other hand, this was my first foray into the world of BRMC. I ventured here based on the description of the sound by other Amazon reviewers. In fact, I hesitated getting this recording because in researching the band I learned their typical sound was so different. I wasn't quite sure what I would be getting. The delay proved to be pointless.

This is a tremendous recording of country blues and folk and a few other less easily classified treasures. It would be difficult to express how much respect I have for this band. To throw off their usual trappings and sound and to produce such a mature quality recording in an entirely different genre is just a remarkable feat. They do what they normally do as well as anyone, but they prove they are more than a one trick pony here. They do this sound with an ease and comfort that is quite amazing. They get this style of music. It sounds like it comes from their soul.

From the grinding rhythms and well-placed grunts of Ain't No Easy Way, to the Dylanesque Complicated Situation, to the beautiful if melancholy hidden Open Invitation, these guys are completely on target. There is an informality befitting such a record on several tracks. It's like the boys got together with their instruments and just started playing, with foot stomps, hand claps, shouts and laughs to boot. In addition to the wonderful music, the lyrics are a full complement. There is a maturity and depth to the words of these songs. Heck, even the packaging is fairly ingenious. It has the appearance of a vintage vinyl record. The CD itself is black with an appropriate script and the back cover has the track listing split into sides 1 and 2. It suits the style of music well.

To BRMC, more please. I am ready for Howl 2 (call it what you will)!

5 out of 5 stars Music to cherish.......2007-07-13

This album is so gorgeous, words will not do it justice. You just have to hear it & keep listening to it to uncover what is hidden in these seemingly simple, mostly acoustic gems. There are many highlights, such as opening track, "Shuffle Your Feet", complete with harmonized vocals, stomps, hoots & hollers. This is a terrific way to get the listener's attention. Another highlight is "Ain't No Easy Way Out", another stomper shouting about the perils of love, and yet another highlight is "Weight of the World", which laments the difficulties we all must face up to in today's complicated world. Slower boilers such as "Fault Line", "Restless Sinner', and "Devil's Waitin'" are simply guitar and voice and sometimes harmonica, and are the type of songs that could be soundtracks to a good ole boy's life. There are 2 songs where BRMC truly sound like Bob Dylan: "Complicated Situation" and "Still Suspicion Holds You Tight" and these songs are masterpieces, but the 2 songs that make this album worthy of 5 stars are "Sympathetic Noose" and "Promise". "Promise" may just be the most beautiful song ever written by anyone. It is that gorgeous. This song could be Peter Hayes singing to anyone beloved to him: family, lover, the Lord......at times the words sound like he is comforting a dying a friend. It is so delicate yet powerful and emotional, that is easily the finest song recorded in this decade. It is the apex of this beautiful collection of Americana songs.

3 out of 5 stars Security.......2007-06-26

Simple -- Great album, more to the blues than to the J & the Mary Chain. The security sucks --- I played it on my computer once and now it will not let me play it there anymore --- and the computer is where I spend more than half my waking day.

1 out of 5 stars Is it possible to digress artistically?.......2007-05-22

Bummer, dude. These songs sound like pale rip-offs of "Brian Jonestown Massacre." Why listen to this album when you can hear the real thing elsewhere? Black Rebel Motorcycle Club sounds like Charlatans UK without the Hammond organ, or the talent and songwriting ability. Only buy this album if you find it in the discount bin for $0.99. It's easily forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars wow much better than their last.......2007-04-17

I love the first album but the second one really disappointed me. Probably cause my expectations were so high. This cd hardly sounds like the same band but I love it. BRMC take on a much more laid back acoustic sound and they do it well.

More evidence that there is actually a garage rock factory in Sweden--the U.S. debut from this perfectly formed, retro-rock quintet bustles with handclaps, keyboard-driven pop melodies and a potent new-wave punch. There's a drop-dead gorgeous blonde like the Ravonettes and a shaggy-haired front man like the Hives (plus someone that inexplicably looks like Moby) but Shout Out Louds otherwise offer up their own variation of the genre using crisp go-go rhythms on "Hurry Up Let's Go" and a woozy southern drawl on the bittersweet "Please Please Please." Fans of the Wannadies will certainly not want to look the other way. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars look into my eyes.......2006-12-15

I tend to agree with another review that said pop is the purest form of music and there's nothing wrong with it. I think that's pretty true. Everyone wants to be a pop star, because that's how you get remembered. But then he said this is not album since it's a collection of singles, which I didn't know, and it totally threw me off. That's fine, but I thought the whole thing flowed very well. I love the style of music, whatever you call it. Good mix of instruments, acoustic and electric guitars, and I think I heard an accordian and flute and a clarinet in there. I loved the song structure, and the upbeat tempos. I don't usually go out and search for "indie bands" per se, but I was glad to stumble onto this little gem, however it is classified. If I had to liken it to something, I'd say Phoenix or Dogs Die in Hot Cars. Good stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2006-11-14

Okay...I'm consulting my How To Write A Snobby Indie Review handbook and it says that I must start by namedropping. Um...Unicorns...that's the first band that comes to mind when I think of Shout Out Louds. And maybe the Strokes (or any other recent NYC garage band), but not quite as mainstream. Of course, for the really pretentious I should mention that the band is Swedish, and this album is similar to the other pop that's been coming out of that country for years.

I saw one guy write that this album is "just" another pop album, but what's the harm in that? Pop is still the purest form of music, and the Beatles and Beach Boys were more than content to make good pop music for years. That guy must be a high school kid who hasn't realized that pop is back in.

Howl Howl Gaff Gaff is not actually a pop "album." It's a collection of singles that were previously released in the band's native country, so there's a bit of variety to the songs and no smooth feel to the album. Ultimately, this album won't change your life and it may not become one of your favorites of all time, but it's hard not to enjoy the simple pleasures here. "The Comeback" is without question the best song and it's a good representation of the rest of the album, so give that a listen...if you enjoy that you'll probably enjoy the rest. (Or if you enjoy the Unicorns, Islands, or any other lo-fi, indie pop band).

5 out of 5 stars amazing music!!.......2006-07-02

say what you will about this band, but i LOVE THEM!!...its one of the only CD's in my collection that i can listen through all the way, without skipping over songs. I can't wait to see this band live!

Purchase this CD - don't hesitate. This album with make you tap your feet and clap your hands. It's up, down, spin around. Their own unique sound splashed with hints of other artist influences. 5 out of 5 stars Relive the movie without watching it!.......2007-05-19

I really love this CD - mainly because I've seen the movie so many times that when I hear the music, the visuals pop straight back into my head. The music is beautiful, and although limited to a few themes is masterfully worked so that it never really gets boring.

Only down side is that this is a Japanese import and all the track titles are written in kanji. I have no idea what each track is called - but as I know the movie so well, this is not a real problem. However, others might find it so.

4 out of 5 stars A nice soundtrack, but too bad about the price!.......2007-04-11

Joe Hisaishi will never cease to amaze Miyazaki watchers. His music is as beautiful as ever, with the lovely themes and the wonderful tracks. This score, while perhaps not as good as "Spirited Away", or as darkly fascinating and memorable as "Princess Mononoke", is light and lovely in its own way.

Each theme is beautiful in its own way. The "Merry-go-round" theme (which repeats itself in some form or other throughout most of the songs and is drop-dead gorgeous) comes in the form of plucked strings, a bassoon, high woodwinds, and the piano. Some songs take advantage of specific instruments, like "Wandering Sophie" and the bassoon, or "Secret Cave" and the beautiful flute opening. Some songs take on that lower, darker quality that Hisaishi used in "Mononoke", and achieve it beautifully (once again, "Secret Cave"). The trumpet gets a solo, too, in "The Boy Who Accepted a Star".

"Howl's Moving Castle" incorporates many themes and types of music, making it diverse, lovely, and wonderful. If only it didn't cost such an outrageous price! It's worth it, but should be offered for less.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and magical.......2006-01-18

Once more, Joe Hisaishi has come up with another winner and with the excellent and imaginative visions of Hayao Miyazaki combined, the score compliments the film beautifully. This tie, Joe use elements from the many musical flavours from Europe especially French music as clearly depicted in 'A Stroll In the Sky' and 'Wondering Sophie' where waltzes are use to illustrate the action and emotions in the film. The end song entitled 'Promise Of The World' is very poignant and wraps up the proceedings nicely and rounds up with 'The Merry Go Round of Life' and ends up with a Viennese waltz. Excellent. The entire score is memorable and it stands on its own and with the piano solo, it certainly a musical gem. A soundtrack worth an award for music contribution to a beautifully animated film. Worth owning! A must have.

Has a more notorious, infamous, call to arms of a poem than "Howl" been published in the late 20th century? Scrawled in 1955 with such intimate, enthusiastic fervor by the young Ginsberg, "Howl" helped thrust into the public eye the Beats--a genuinely original, deep, and at times unintentionally campy group of writers. But "Howl" is Ginsberg's work, and while it pays homage to his close friends--like William S. Burroughs ("who retired to Mexico to cultivate a habit") and Jack Kerouac ("or Rocky Mount to tender Buddha")--it's no documentary of bohemian writerdom. Forget for a second that "Howl" is the famous poem it is--so frequently parodied, copied, and infamously litigated against--and just listen. This disc presents an intense, well-recorded reading from 1959 of this spiritual, touching work. The record also includes "Kaddish," "A Supermarket in California," and six other important works. --Mike McGonigal

>
As a teenager I wanted to run down the
middle of my hometown steet screaming and
throwing myself in the air, anything to break
up the dull drab everydayness of it, I don't
know if this is a common fantasy that teenagers
have?
>
A friend of mine said that Shakespeare
is hard to read but easier to understand when
seen performed on stage. I've read Howl (or
got 2/3 of the way through it) a couple of times
without really understanding it or enjoying it.
I've heard it recited on stage a couple of times
by Jean & John Waggoner's City Lights Review,
and even saw/heard Allen Ginsberg himself
perform it at Cheltenham Literary Festival circa
about 1992. And while appreciating the passion
of these live readings and recognising a few
references: "Neal Cassady cocksman..." etc.
I didn't really get it. I knew that two very
intelligent friends of mine got a big buzz out
of it, so knew I must be missing something.

So when I got Allen Ginsberg 'Howl &
Other Poems' CD and seeing that Howl was
the first track on it, I put it on my player, lay
on the bed, closed my eyes, settled down and
listened. Through Allen's distinctive matter-
of-fact voice the poem unfolded, revealing
itself to me. It was the same story as Jack
Kerouac's On the Road (correct me if I'm
wrong) containing nearly all the same
characters and a few others, yet told in
impressionistic verse, instead of Jack's long
prose poem. A take on the same era/scene/
emotion but from a different angle.

It's the paean of the underdog, concentrate:
wonderful imagery. Let Allen lead you around the
scene and show you that time, incident by pictured

5 out of 5 stars Howl - Ginsberg's poetry read by the author on CD.......2006-11-10

Haven't listened to it yet, but it arrived on time & I'm glad to have it for AP Lit English classes

2 out of 5 stars A Weak Work.......2006-10-15

'Howl', like most -- perhaps all -- Beat poetry, has not aged well. It's a lazy, ugly poem which could have been written by any well-read and angry college kid. I have read it many times and see nothing in it of any value other than the historical.

5 out of 5 stars Howl, a preview to acclimate the prospective buyer.......2006-09-13

Before starting, allow me to mention the fact that I am reviewing solely the poem "Howl" in Howl and Other Poems.

I read "Howl" this summer as a 16 year old and it changed my outlook on the world. As far as enjoying the poem I was entirely too confused by it the first time I read it to actually enjoy it; so let me start by giving the reader of this and prospective buyer of Howl and other Poems the advice to read "Howl" several times before forming a concrete opinion about it. There is really nothing in "Howl" that I dislike but there are many stanzas in which I cannot fully appreciate the writing because I do not understand all of it. The main strength of Ginsberg's poem is to expand the mind of the reader, even if that means confusing the reader. Take for example the stanza:
who were burned alive in their innocent flannel suits on Madison Avenue, amid blasts of leaden verse & the tanked-up clatter of the iron regiments of fashion & the nitroglycerine shrieks of the fairies of advertising & the mustard gas of sinister intelligent editors, or were run down by the drunken taxicabs of Absolute Reality,
an absolutely mind boggling sentence, attacking the areas of fashion and advertising and the powers of editors in newspapers. Stanzas like that are why I enjoy this poem, it is a critique of the time that Ginsberg lived in and allows one to see parallels in the current day and age.

For a brief and shining moment, the working-class heroes of Minutemen streaked across punk rock's horizon, opening minds, moving butts, and inspiring awe like few of their peers. This 1983 EP might not be one of their better-known releases, but it is chock-a-block with classic spiels that shed light on the instinctive bond between bassist Mike Watt (who checks in with the cutting "I Felt Like a Gringo") and the late guitarist D Boon (whose furious delivery ensures that every listener will feel "Little Man with a Gun in His Hand" deep in his or her gut). True to form, most of the tunes do clock in around a minute, so even if one doesn't strike your fancy, the wait for the next buzz won't be a long one. --David Sprague

...the funkiest song known to man is Born Under Punches by the Talking Heads, there's no two ways about that (Not even Cashing objections by Bobby Conn comes close). Still, I felt like a Gringo might be the closest third I've heard so far.

5 out of 5 stars Little Man With a Gun In His Hand. Masterpiece ep........2006-03-01

That song is one of the greatest ever. What a notion. What delivery. Spectacular record. The MINUTEMEN were in their prime. Well, all their time was their prime. This was released in 1983. They did 9 records in 5 years. They toured incessantly. I think they may have released more records and done more touring in 5 years than any other band I've ever heard of.

    Lucky us.

Maybe one day someone will piece together some sorta listing of their touring history.

'I Felt Like a Gringo' is also another classic. Well, really, the MINUTEMEN rarely did any songs that were less than grand. Some are spectacular, others are just great.

Sure, get this record in another CD with those Post Mersh volumes. Get yer music's worth. The more MINUTEMEN the better. This record, by itself is totally worth it, no matter what way you get it. Driving, impeccable drumming, conviction in the vocals and a sound they simply invented themselves.

God bless d. boon and the MINUTEMEN. chrisbct@hotmail.com

(if you wanna see my story of me seein' 'em 3 times look up the What Makes A Man review here.)

5 out of 5 stars a must for all fans!.......1999-01-06

"I FELT LIKE A GRINGO" is the funkiest song known to man...i dare you not to "bounce" in your seat....can't be done as far as im concerned...their finest cuts are on this early ep. Bon Minutemen!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability.......2004-06-29

I was familiar with Robin's work with the eclectic acoustic trio, Helicon, and I even had the great honor of his musical accompaniment at a local art fair gig once. Knowing about his mastery of many instruments, I've been wanting to get this album of his for quite some time. Robin plays nine different instruments on "Midnight Howl." Steve Bloom's percussion is right on, and we also hear some expert bodhran, wooden flute and Celtic harp from Myron Bretholz, Chris Norman and Sue Richards, respectively. No slouches there! The CD starts with a lively "John MacKenzie's Fancy" that imparts a rhythmic intensity that is very powerful. Throughout the journey, he follows his quick paced romps with leisurely musical strolls. Arrangements are well thought out, and it's a true pleasure to hear the genesis of 8-minute numbers like "Jaybird Suite" and "Ash Grove Suite." Robin Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2003-04-28

I have become a huge Robin Bullock fan, and this CD "Midnight Howl" is just the latest of his works that I have aquired. These tunes are a beautiful blending of a little Celtic, a little "Hillbilly", a little Bluegrass, and a lot of pride. This is such a beautiful work, I would have to place it close to one of my favorites. I believe, if you like string music with a down home flavor, you should give this work a listen.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-02-02

I discovered Robin Bullock when he toured a couple years ago with Celtic accordian madman John Whelan. Bullock is an outstanding musician. I had to have the CD that included a song called "For Ireland I'd Not Tell Her Name." That turned out to be "Midnight Howl." A beautiful song, as is every piece on this CD. If you enjoy Celtic and traditional instrumental music suitable for relaxing and dreaming on a snowy or rainy day, don't miss this recording!

Family power rock trio. As one critic put it, " Imagine AC/DC fronted by a woman who sings like Patsy Cline and writes like Bob Dylan." Internet pioneers blazing their own trail, they have been embraced by everyone from college radio to author Elmore Leonard, who included their lyrics in his sequel to "Get Shorty", the novel "Be Cool". They rock and they mean it.

    5 out of 5 stars What's your problem?.......2006-06-20

I'm having a little trouble understanding the previous reviewer--What's with the insane anger? And why do you keep reviewing them if you obviously don't understand or like the music? Is there something personal? Does it make you mad that everybody seems to like/love this amazingly cool band? We love them here in new Orleans, and they haven't even toured here yet...but we're keeping our fingers crossed. Can't wait to get the new cd that we've heard some of on xm.

1 out of 5 stars Very overrated here at Amazon.......2006-06-10

This is the second Stone Coyotes album I've heard, and all I can say is that it's boring, predictable, and very overrated (apparently, judging from the Amazon reviews). I would only think this was decent if I came across this band at a bar and had had a few beers. Imagine Bonnie Raitt fronting ZZ Top and you're halfway there, except that they're barely half as good as that would be. Barbara Keith may have a decent voice, but she sings here with little true energy and no variation -- if you like one of these songs, you're bound to like them all, because they pretty much sound alike. The best song is their cover of "Jolene," because it's a great song and it's not theirs.

If you stopped paying attention to rock in about 1980, and classic rock radio is as cutting edge as you care to be, I can see where you're coming from liking these guys. If punk and other risk-takers in rock since then have been too scary for you, then this band may be for you. If you want to hear some truly great women in rock, though, listen to P.J. Harvey, Sleater-Kinney, or Neko Case, to name but a few.

5 out of 5 stars Be Cool and Listen.......2005-03-25

The freshest rock in years comes from a middleage rocker named Barbara Keith. I love this album. My 10 year old daughter and I are both inspired to play the guitar and rock. Nothing false here. Long live the Stone Coyotes. I'm seeing them next week and I am stoked.

5 out of 5 stars why isn't First Lady of Rock the most known song on earth?.......2004-01-14

    First Lady of Rock.

This song is just the coolest.

The greatest inspiration for all the aspiring grrl guitarists and singers like me

5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite CD.......2002-05-23

One review writer for a major publication described the Stone Coyotes as "AC/DC meets Patsy Cline." That's about as close as one can get, yet this family trio certainly has a sound both unique and awesome. I was virtually dumbstruck the first time I heard this disk, and it was my first exposure to this band. Their sound is powerful and crunchy, infectious and erotic. Every song on this disk is hot, hot, hot. Barbara's voice is both haunting and searing, and Doug and John form the tastiest rhythm section of any rock band today, bar none. Their cover of Dolly's "Joline" is particularly noteworthy. If you like rock, you absolutely must own this one.

      Album Description

BRIMSTONE HOWL's sound is a furious mix of 60's influenced garage and old school punk that has been alternately described as "scuzzy blues-ish punk gone Killed by Death, like a lo-fi, art damaged early Gun Club," and "'60s blues-based rock 'n' roll played Billy Childish style-super loose, raw, and f*d-up." Born in the small towns of southeast Nebraska, the boys of BRIMSTONE HOWL worked on the farms and now make their music in Lincoln, a city-town neither urban enough for dandies or country enough for rodeo motorcyclists. Cranking out several 45s in one year, including one engineered by Jay Reatard, they've toured and played with bands such as the Black Lips, Radio Moscow, Boston Chinks, Gris Gris, and the Black Keys. Delivering in-your-face live performances, they describe themselves as "Guitar sluts and hook thieves with hearts of chrome, but with pretty good lyrics," and their music as "like burnt, steady tom beats, the blues, and looooooowwwwwd fuzz." Impressed by the band's dual sonic attack and on-stage presence, producer Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys has perfectly captured their wall of blasting fuzz and primal energy on this great rock'n'roll album.
