Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Othar Turner is the living master of the cane fife, a short piece of hollowed-out sugar cane with holes. The simplistic, tranced-out party music known as fife and drum--the most clearly African-sounding of all traditional blues--remained all but hidden to most listeners until 1959, when Alan Lomax first encountered and recorded it in Mississippi. There are but a handful of records of real fife and drum music, and this clear-sounding document, with multiple versions of the classic "Shimmy She Wobble," might be the best record yet made of this intoxicating sound. --Mike McGonigal
Amazon.com
Othar Turner is one of the last practitioners of a musical form teetering perilously close to extinction. As he'll gladly tell you himself, Turner has been playing Southern fife and drum music for eight of his nine decades. Though he's appeared on several blues compilations over the years, Goat is the most substantive and satisfying survey of Turner's unique talents. Recorded by guitarist Luther Dickinson (son of Jim) and author Robert Gordon (It Came from Memphis) at barbecue parties held on Turner's Tate County, Mississippi, farm, Goat sways from delicate grace to shine-fueled hill-country blues to shambolic spiritual evocation. It is every bit as essential a document of America's folk-music heritage as anything Harry Smith or Alan Lomax ever offered up for posterity. And as a promising side note, Turner's band includes some of his children and grandchildren, hopefully ensuring that when he does leave this world, the fife and drum tradition won't leave with him. --Matt Hanks
Album Description
The first full length from the man behind the drum and fife sound, possibly the only modern primitive trance music that appeals to the drum-and-bass inclined and blues fans. Even Rolling Stone recognized it as one of the five best blues records of the 90's. Originally recorded between 1992 & 1997. Birdman. 2001.
Customer Reviews:
one great hypnotic groove.......2003-06-25
Othar Turner, if you were lucky to ever seem him perform, was an amazing performer and a gentleman to boot. The full energy of one of his famous annual summer goat fryups at his home in Senatobia, Missisipi is captured here. The nearest muscial form to "drum and fife" comes from the west coast of Africa, that's how old this musical form is, although there is some blues guitar mixed in on some of the tracks. The fife gives a very primordial, birdcalling edge to the drums. "Drum and fife" is an acquired taste, but like eating spices, once you've acquired that taste, you cannot get enough. Although Othar died last year, apparantly his granddaughter will keep the tradition alive.
Otha Rules!.......2002-11-03
This isn't for everyone, but if you're into deep blues roots, it is a must have. Blues, soul, funk, mother Africa, barbequed goat, cold beer and hot sweaty bodies: you can feel it all on this one!
Wellsprings of music is right here.......2000-08-17
If you are looking for the wellsprings of music, this CD might be a good place to start. This is as close to Africa as American music gets. The Mississippi fife-and-drum tradition has been explored on record by Alan Lomax and others, and it is always surprising to people unfamiliar with this music that such things exist. This CD is a powerful addition to the recorded heritage of Mississippi and the United States. Since 1923 or so, 90-year-old Othar Turner has been playing cane fifes of his own making, and family and friends accompany him down on his farm with drums--bass and snare. He holds 2-day picnics filled with fife-and-drum music, traditional blues jams, barbecued pig and goat, moonshine whiskey, beer and pop. Fife playing is an art in the oral tradition, passed on from generation to generation. Turner learned it from R.E. Williams, and taught it to his children and grandchildren. You might want to start with track five, one of three versions of "Shimmy She Wobble" on the CD. Turn up the volume and lose yourself in the sounds of hypnotic drumming, shouts, chants and screams, and fife. Then listen to the cricket-saturated "Roll and Tumble," one of several slide-guitar blues on the CD. Then roam freely and take it all in. If you really want to know the roots of music--all music--this is a place to start. Turner and friends make music from someplace deeper than we experience most of the time; but you can find it in yourself if you allow yourself to get lost in this stuff. Especially recommended for those who want to know blues and rock's beginnings.
Absolutely cool!.......1998-06-13
Mr. Turner, a 91 year old former sharecropper from Senatobia, MS. is the last person playing a type of music called "African American Fife and Drum" music. It predates, and is one of the foundations for, the Blues. The music is a combination of African, Blues and march rhythms. You have to hear it to believe it and understand what I am talking about.
The recordings on this CD are primarily "field recordings" that capture the atmosphere in which this type of music is played, i.e., a picnic or party-type setting. To fully appreciate what a picnic is, go to Mr. Turner's home in Senatobia Mississippi on Labor Day weekend and attend his annual picnic, which has been a tradition at his home for over 25 years. You will never forget the experience and you will never forget the hospitality of Mr. Turner and his family.
Alan Lomax called African-American fife and drum music his most important discovery, and Mr. Turner has been honored by the Smithsonian, the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been featured in the Oxford American and on ABC's Good Morning America. Listen to this incredible and unique album and you will see why!

Customer Reviews:
Waaahooowahooo Hooey!.......2007-01-31
This is one the most educational and entertaining recordings on the market! Explored as a true art form and a pragmatic communication device, Hollern' calls your ears to attention. I love this album for it's wealth of folk history found in many stories told by local winners of the National Hollern' Contest in Spivey's Conrner, North Carolina. I adore this album for it's no holds barred musicianship from every single hollerin' fool with thier personal renditions of familiar tunes. The highest notes are pure melismatic bliss! Recorded on location in North Carolina in 1975 and 1976, these recording are a treasure of American musical folk idioms, unique and mostly now forgotten. A holler may simply communicate some request or statement. A holler could be a way to embellish and enjoy an old tune. The greatest hollers satisfy both purposes. You have not lived until you've sat down and heard these champions holler!

Customer Reviews:
One of the best acoustic blues albums ever!.......2001-01-11
I'm a serious acoustic blues fan. I give this album five stars out of at least three reasons. First, the songs selected are all classic blues takes and the singers are all famous modern acoustic bluesmen. Second, the songs are sung and accompanied in a fantastic way. The most outstanding tracks include "Goin' Down Slow" by Eric Bibb, which is the version I like best, "C.C. Pill Blues" by Corey Harris, "Malted Milk" by John Hammond, ... As a matter of fact, there is not a weak track in this album! Last but not least, the recording quality is fantastic! I highly recommend this album. If you, as a blues lover, haven't got this album, you shouldn't hesitate. Get one at once and try not to get drunk listening to it! Acoustic blues is the introduction to blues music.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton is the musical equivalent of a limited-edition, fine-press book, and it's easily one of the most beautiful collections of recorded music ever assembled. Exquisitely designed, this 78-album-inspired, seven-CD package contains a wealth of information and music, featuring not only the Delta blues pioneer's complete recorded works, but the music of peripheral players (including Son House, Howlin' Wolf, and Henry "Son" Sims), a disc of fascinating audio interviews with Patton associates, and hours of reading material on the enigmatic songster.
It's hard not to romanticize the music contained within this set as you open its retro-looking slipcase, but Patton (1887-1934) doesn't let you down. Under the haze of 78 rpm record hiss, his 50-odd preserved recordings spellbind with great guitar playing and moving lyrics about love, loss, and catastrophes. Who cares if his life lacked the mystique of Robert Johnson, or his low, growling voice wasn't the creepy falsetto of Skip James? Patton's repertoire was unparalleled; his guitar playing--punctuated by striking syncopated, percussive beats--is always in tune and precise; and his slide playing is full subtle whines and flourishes. These remastered tracks sound better than ever, but there's still plenty of hiss (for some tunes, just one abused and poorly pressed record has survived). Copious, scholarly (and, at times, a little arcane) liner notes debate and survey Patton's mysterious life and tunes; the complete lyrics to his songs are included, too--no small feat. But it's the music--utterly raw, striking, and influential blues--that steals the show here.
Revenant Records has outdone itself--this is a poignant dream project that label cofounder/guitar great John Fahey didn't live long enough to see completed--and it's well worth every penny. Only a handful of musical artists deserve this lavish a treatment; as evidenced here, Patton--the first great Delta blues musician on record--is certainly one of them. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, but for hardcore obsessives only..........2005-04-01
I love this set, but for the price, I think it's more for those who, like me, fell off into the deep end. For the money, I would recommend the JSP set, it's $25 and has all of Patton's recordings.
The JSP definetly has more noise reduction, which can be a plus to newbies,(but I prefer the more original sound of the recordings, no matter what. They are history after all.) That said, you get a copy of Fahey's long out of print book,( Which goes for more then $200) plus an amazing packaging by Revenant. There is much material hear to study.
Best. Album. EVER........2003-11-09
This is the musical equivalent of a family Bible. You will pass it down from children to grandchildren. It cannot be likened to any other boxed set I have ever seen - not even the lavish and fantastic Bear Family country and rockabilly sets from Germany. The Folkways reissue of the Anthology of American Folk Music comes close in look and feel, but it's still 100 miles behind.
There are three points that I would make to a potential purchaser that may not be totally obvious:
1. These recordings sound really, really good for those on the old Paramount label - where the recordings were done poorly, no metal parts exist, and all extant CDs are dubbed from 78 RPM shellac pressings, some of which are in pretty bad shape (at one point the only existing copy of Willie Brown's "Future Blues" was broken in half!). I have not heard JSP's Patton boxed set, which would seem to be a great substitute at $25 for somebody who does not want to pay $150. However, I do have JSP's "Legends of the Country Blues," which has the 1930 Son House Paramount recordings that are on disc 4 of this set. This sounds much better. The JSP sounds more No-Noised to me, while this sounds more alive on the high end. I say that as someone who has bought a lot of the JSP sets, and who would have no hesitation recommending their work generally.
2. This is not 7 CDs of just Charley Patton. This is a really good introduction to pre-Robert Johnson Delta blues. You get all the Paramount recordings of Son House, Willie Brown and Louise Johnson, two of whom were seminal figures, and the last of whom was just fun. (Somebody ought to make a movie about the roadtrip Patton, House, Brown and Johnson took to Wisconsin to record these tracks. They could get Charles Dutton to play the guy from the Delta Big Four who drove them.) You get a CD of some pretty essential stuff by various artists, including Tommy Johnson. You get the Delta Big Four, Son Sims and some others. You get a CD of interviews.
3. It's bittersweet to say, but this set may get overtaken by future discoveries. It's criminally ironic that a full-body, first-generation photo of Charley Patton finally surfaced a year after this box came out. Also, it's known that there are other Patton recordings for which 78s have yet to be found; they may turn up if they haven't already.
You KNOW you want to buy it. Don't you?
big set big price.......2003-05-15
The previous reviews make some valid points about this stunning box set-it is really special, and like thing that are incremntally finer, it is geometrically more [money]- and i take my blues pretty seriously...
it is, as mentioned, like a fine rare book-and the essential music (the first 5 cds ) are available ... in the Complete Works of Charley Patton (the five cd set in a slip case-limited liner notes) also listed here, and affordable for 'us bluesmen'.
I am writing this to let all know that, aside from two additional cds, one containing interviews by others about Patton, and one of other artists who performed his work (thus the "worlds of CP" ), and some very cool posters and stickers and lovely packaging and other toys and eye candy, the essence is available for a fraction of the cost-same stuff from "masked marvel productions" the orignator of this lovely tome -made in the UK. Unless you really love CP and will listen to this lots, I recommend the [shorter] set-it is still the stirring blues of this great, complete.
Charlie Patton Delta Bluesman.......2002-09-07
From the reviews I know this is worth the money there is allot of rare stuff on here especially the Willie Brown song "Pallet on the Floor" this is my main reason for wanting to get this box set so bad. This is the only place you can get that Willie Brown song according to Yazoo2002 "Masters of the Delta Blues, Friends of Charlie Patton" he only recorded two songs in his life time "M&O blues" and "Jinx Blues" one of the most awesome Delta blues songs I have heard (Jinx Blues). Oh yeah one more thing I would have given this 5 stars but where in the world is the Ishmon Bracey recording I mean he was one of Charlie Patton's worlds also (lol) wasn't he not to mention one of the best Delta Bluesmen to strum a guitar it just seems incomplete to have Kid Bailey, Son House, Willie Brown, Tommy Johnson, Bertha Lee and no Ishmon Bracey .... The poor guy is probally squirming in his grave right now leaving him out like that yall otta be ashamed of yourselves (Yazoo would have never done a thing like that). Just for that I'm giving this 3.5 stars now (but I'm still gonna save the money to buy this) p.s how in the hell is a Bluesman suppose to afford this boxset....
Great Guy, Dumb Packaging.......2002-08-22
Of all the trite marketing gimmicks, this is one of the silliest. CDs in a 78? Give me a break! This is what John Fahey wanted?
Waste of materials, waste of space, lack of imagination. The worlds of Charley Patton? How many worlds did the guy have?
Patton's music is the antithesis of this gauche overkill.

Ben Weaver has a truly unique gift for music. With a rough, sturdy narrative he breathes life into the images and characters of his stories using old time flare and a bittersweet honesty. His band plays tightly and reservedly behind him, keeping a steady root in the country/folk flavor of his lyrics. The banjo, mandolin, and fiddle blend together with the vocals to form a sensual texture you almost see, touch, and smell. Weaver offers a bold look into the struggles and hopes of everyday people - he's worth checking out by anyone who appreciates an old porch and a good conversation. I highly recommend El Camino Blues as well.

Customer Reviews:
Love this CD!.......2007-07-05
Listening to this CD is like stepping back in time. I love old blues. This CD must have been recorded off old albums cause you hear every pop and scratch, but that dosen't take diminish the music. Makes you feel like you were there while he was playing and singing. If you love old blues and won't find the flaws distracting, its a fantastic CD.
Great double-disc overview.......2004-04-04
Not to be confused with Revenant Records' lavish seven-disc box set, this fine Recall compilation is a very fine purchase for fans who want a little more than just one of the numerous single-disc compilations, but who aren't ready to shell out for a box set.
The cover art is nice, held in discreet gray tones and featuring a picture of Patton, and the track selection is superb, including virtually all of his best and best-known songs.
Charlie Patton played his acoustic guitar like a stringed drum, banging on it, snapping the strings, and accenting the rhythm in any way possible, and his big, gravelly voice and flamboyant manner greatly influenced Howlin' Wolf, who started his career as a strict Patton imitator back in the 30s.
The original masters to Charlie Patton's songs are long lost, and the sound on these 75-year old recordings are certainly less than stellar, but that is to be expected, and shouldn't deter you from adding this fine compilation to your shopping basket.
