On Baptism, his seventh album, Lenny Kravitz writes, arranges, performs, and produces every track. The trouble with working alone is that there's little quality control; some of the songs here really could have benefited from a bit of that. Not to say that Baptism is a complete dud of an album, indeed, the worst thing about it is its awful cover. "California" has a catchy, power-pop bounce that's actually reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne, with its fuzzy guitars and handclaps, as well as its un-Kravitz-like short running time (just over two-and-a-half minutes). But then "Sistamamalover" veers deep into Prince territory, with a groove that's too contrived, too dull, and too long. And there's some of the self-indulgence of a satisfied, middle-aged rocker apparent on "Minister of Rock & Roll" and "I Don't Want to Be a Star" (it's easy to sing about wanting only "a Chevy and an old guitar" when you're living in a massive mansion). The best tracks are the most straightforward, fun ones: the aforementioned "California," the ZZ Top-inspired "Where Are We Runnin'?" and the Stones-sounding "Flash." Kravitz should loosen up more and leave the angst to the teenagers. --Robert Burrow

I love it!.......2007-01-12
I had all but given up on Lenny Kravitz after Circus. I just happened to listen to this album on Rhapsody and fell in love with it. It is the Best Lenny Kravitz album since Mama Said. Thanks Lenny, for actually playing some nice rock music!
Good, not great........2006-08-25
I picked this album up used at a record store for $6, and I think it's well worth it. I'd only heard "Lady" (pretty good) and "Where are we Runnin'?" (great), so I thought I'd get it. I like the album for about half the songs. I appreciate that Lenny does slow songs, but 6 out of 13 songs? I don't even find them very good slow songs. If they were good slow songs, I'd give this CD 5 stars, but no. The fast songs are really good, so why aren't the rest like that?
1. Minister of Rock 'N' Roll: 9.5/10 Perfect way to start the album.
2. I Don't Want To Be a Star: 7/10 I don't like his whiny voice in the intro and chorus, but the verses are good.
3. Lady: 8/10 Too long, and repetitive, but the solo is cool.
4. Calling All Angels: 5/10 Ugh. Slow, boring, lame lyrics, too long, etc. Skip this track.
5. California: 9/10 Fun song, good tune to dance to.
6. Sistamamalover: 9/10: Nice funky feel to the song, but odd lyrics.
7. Where Are We Runnin'?: 10/10 Awesome. Heavy bass, heavy guitar, good verses.
8. Baptized: 7/10 Bad verses, good chorus.
9. Flash: 9.5/10 I love this song. Again, odd lyrics, but good.
10. What Did I Do With My Life?: 7/10 Lenny sounds like Elvis Costello in this song. But it doesn't help.
11. Storm: 9/10 Another funky song, but this has Jay-Z, so it's even better.
12. The Other Side: 6.5/10 Wow. This sounds just like all the other piano ballads on this album.
13. Destiny: 6.5/10 Sub-par defines this song. Lenny with an acoustic guitar and a falsetto. Almost worse than it sounds.
Overall: 103/130=79%, hence the 4 stars. If you like Kravitz, pick this up used.
So So.......2006-05-23
First of all, Im a huge Kravitz fan, I have all his albums ooops, did I say that, I meant cds. I love his throwback, late 60's-7o's funky/rock/soul style. But I am sad to say that Baptism did not impress me that much, like his earlier stuff did. Sure, there are a couple of songs I dig on Baptism, but as a whole, I have to say I dont like it all. I like Sistamammalover, and R and R Minister. That Angel song bored me to death. I had to skip it and go to the next song, because the first time I was listening to it, I was driving, and almost fell asleep. Baptism is not his best. Come on Lenny, get back to that funky/soulful stuff you do so well...
Very happy.......2005-12-23
Very happy with cd and service
"You just don't know how to groove, white boy.".......2005-10-09
"Sistamamalover" is one of the finest soul tunes since the theme to Good Times! "California" sounds like the boy is fondly reminiscing to his pre-teen days, and it makes you want to move there now. "Minister of Rock & Roll" is full more music than anyone can catch on their first 5 listenings. Overall, even the weakest tunes on this disc are 4 star -- buy it, and worship with Lenny!

Sister Re.......2006-09-19
This album was recorded 15 years after AMAZING GRACE, Aretha Franklin's groundbreaking gospel album. It's hard to top that album, but this is a nice collection nonetheless. You can tell that Aretha loves this kind of music. I wish she would do another album like this! Guests on the album include Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Jasper Williams, and Rev. C.L. Franklin, plus Mavis Staples, Joe Ligon, and her sisters, Carol and Erma.
I have to say my absolute favorite is her rendition of "Ave Maria". It's breathtaking, and one of the best versions I have heard of this song. Aretha sings standards like "Surely God Is Able" and "The Lord's Prayer,", and a scorching version of "Higher Ground."
Overall a really nice return to Gospel. Every Aretha Franklin fan should hear this cd!
A ROSE IS STILL AND ALWAYS WILL BE A ROSE........2004-10-10
I started listening to Aretha franklin in the early 80's and I am just finding this album. This is a very spiritual moving and inspirational album made back in 1987 by The Queen of Soul. Aretha makes a very poinent observation that she was very happy to have her family there singing and praying with her including her two late sisters, brother, and grandmother the mother of the late REV. C.L. Franklin. My Favorite songs on the album are surley god is able, Packing up, we need power, and ive been in the storm too long. All these songs Aretha goes all out vocally on. Dispite the fact that Aretha's voice has changed she puts her heart and soul into this inspirational project. I am waiting for Ms Franklin to make another gospel album.
wonderful message, imperfect delivery.......2004-09-09
I adore the "Amazing Grace" cd ( I have both versions, and still play them both regularly ). The music on this one, though, has that terribly slick, over-produced eighties sheen to it that I just can't get into. It has none of the soul that made "Amazing Grace" transcend all boundaries. The vocals are, as usual, incredibly moving. It's just the music itself that I don't care for. If you are a fan of newer RnB styled Gospel like Yolanda Adams and things like that, you might like this. I just found it "samey", much like the majority of Aretha Franklin's eighties recordings for Arista.
Aretha is still Aretha.......2004-02-07
Even though she has aged and such is displayed in her voice, the Queen's ability to use experience and such vocal control is unparalleled... I can hardly wait for the next gospel recording by the Queen!!! I LOVE YOU RE-RE!!!
Great stuff, but...............2003-07-03
Overall, this is an excellent CD. No. 3 of Aretha's Gospel Epics.
There is some heavy preaching by Jesse Jackson and Rev. Jasper Williams. This may turn off some listeners, but it does give one the full impact of a religious service in an African-American Baptist church (minus the taking of collection).
Aretha, Mavis Stapes, and others handle the material excellently. They do Clara Ward justice on "Surely God Is Able" and "Packing up." "Be Grateful" is pretty good too as "I've Been In The Strom Too Long."
Unfortunately, there are two drawbacks. One is that this CD was not well recorded. You really have to amp the volume on this one to get it good. Secondly, years of cigarette smoking (or improper throat care) has taken much of the lustre from Miss Franklin's voice, which puts the performance level at a couple of grades below 1972's Amazing Grace or her 1956 debut "Never Grow Old" (a.k.a "Aretha Gospel").
In spite of that, it's a worthwhile and enjoyable purchase. But I wonder why it was out of circulation for so many years?

Album Description
The debut recording of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale features the most enduring songs of inspiration, hymns, and arrangements of spirituals by the choir's namesake, Canadian composer R. Nathaniel Dett. Brainerd Blyden-Taylor is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale.
Nathaniel Dett was born in Drummondville, Ontario in 1882 and died in October, 1943. Nathaniel Dett was dedicated to the cause of Black music, winning the Bowdoin and Frances Boott prizes in 1920 from Harvard University for his paper, "The Emancipation of Negro Music" and for his motet, "Don't Be Weary Traveller".
The Nathaniel Dett Chorale is Canada's first professional choral group dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles including classical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk and blues. The Chorale is comprised of classically trained, multi-faceted vocalists whose work stretches beyond the traditional expectations of a classical chamber choir, and seeks to challenge us to broaden our vision to include all styles and genres of music as appropriate to the traditions of the African Diaspora.

It's the "gothic" Joan.......2007-04-24
With LOTS of filler.
Too bad, 3 tracks - "Who Murdered The Minutes," "All In Green Went My Love A Riding" and especially "The Magic Wood" are among Joan Baez's most artistic moments! Lovely dark mid-60's art-psychedelia with cobwebbed piano and subterrestrial cellos - dour enough for Nico, brainy enough for Judy Collins.
... but the "poetry" recitals?
Honk!
One of the most interesting things i have ever heard.......2006-09-25
This is something i stumbled upon when looking for the works of Arthur Rimbaud for the first time, the sinister and foreboding mood which Baez and accompanying orchestra invoke with pieces such as 'evil' and 'minister of war' are magnificent, the most appropriate appropriation of an orchestra i have seen. As one reviewer notes the scene it sets is quite dark, but it should be looked on as tragic not as depressing, these are pieces plucked sparsely from different centuries and different cultures, the beauty of suffering, nothing reaching close to self indulgence.
I was led to Arthur Rimbaud through a keen interest in The Doors, then the writings of Jim Morrison who took a great deal of influence from the French poet, i found staggering paralells in the recording of Rimbaud's 'evil' with 'horse latitudes' on The Doors 'Strange Days' worth a listen side by side.
Mixed but contains some astonishing gems.......2003-04-30
Three stars might seem a low rating, since I have searched for this recording ever since I first heard it in college in the '70s, but the combination of poetry (read in Joan Baez's monotonous voice) and a few songs will not be to everyone's taste, as it was not to mine. However, some of the poetry and several of the songs are so haunting as to be almost devastating. "All in Green Came My Love Riding" and "The Woods" have remained in my head all these years, and have an almost visceral effect on me - beautiful and haunting and other-worldly. They have a quality sometimes associated with the word Celtic, though that would limit them too much. And the poetry is excellent - particularly Wilfred Owen's "The Old Man and the Young," which retells the story of Abraham sacrificing Isaac in terms of the millions of youth sacrified to no end in World War I, and his among his (many) powerful anti-war poems. Even if you buy this CD for one or two tracks, it will be worth the price.

Great for all.......2004-01-22
This album is just full of great beats. Mixing dancehall and roots reggae, this can pump you up or chill you out. Your mind will be groovin especially when you hear tracks like "Rocky Road", "Flex," and "Solid Rock." Dancehall Baptism Ch 1 has a Christian flow throughout the lyrics, however, to those who aren't so religious: this will not turn you off to the music like some christian records may do. Get it. JAM to it. Show your friends and they will want it. This is a must for a solid reggae collection
musical baptism.......2002-04-06
This is a collaboration of Christian dancehall artists that are witnessing to the world that Jesus is Lord! My picks are Number One by Chevelle Franklin, My Stereo by Christafari, Flex by Todah and Born for the Struggle by Junior C. Of course anything by Stitchie is good to listen to. Overall this is a good collection of songs and would be a good choice for anyone who is just starting to listen to Christian reggae.
Good blend of Christian reggae.......2001-05-15
DB1 makes want to track down the individual aritsts' albums! This compilation takes some of the best songs these artist have to offer. The messages are clear and songs like "Good News," and especially "Praise the Lord," in which The Prodigal Son talks about Ninjaman, a Jamaican deejay (they call them deejays instead of MC's) who was a pioneer for the gangsta dancehall, much like N.W.A. was for American gangsta rap. Ninjaman apparently accepted Christ at a revival, became Brother Desmond and started singing Christian lyrics, then went back to his old ways. Consequently, Reggae Gospel has been looked down upon because of Ninjaman's reputation among Jamaican Christians as a fraud. But Prodigal Son attempts to remind people that it's not too late for Ninjaman to get back in line. Other cuts like "Rocky Road" and "Solid Rock" will have you bobbing your head all day. Definitely worth getting!
Almost, but..........2001-05-04
For those of you who really enjoyed the sound of Shaggy's chatting on the hit "It Wasn't Me" but have nausea at the pit of your stomach for sort of liking a song about lying to your girlfriend after adultery, this collection should have been for you. Dancehall is that style of reggae rap heard in that song, and the dude from Christafari here combined a bunch of Christian groups that play in that style and put them all on one disc. I myself am a big fan of Christian music, but I am also a big fan of production values. If the lost will listen, the talent needs to be there, but unfortunately half the tracks on this album sound like they were recorded by three guys and an old Cassio keyboard with 50 "voices" for five bucks. A couple songs even sound like the author forgot that there are more than one note! There are high points: Christafari's "My Radio" isn't my favorite song by them, but it sounds decent, and outside them the best artists are clearly Stitchie and Chevelle Franklin. However, if you're looking for uplifting dancehall reggae AND decent production, you're better off just buying Christafari's far superior Word Sound Power album--an amazing disc.
Dancehall "Explosion".......2001-02-26
Excellent christian artists put together on one CD. I've had the CD for over 2 months and still can't get tired of it. It's a great way to learn scriptures and hear the gospel through song. For those of us exposed to reggae culture in the Caribbean is simply uplifting to hear christian words to the old familiar reggae beat. To those of you who don't know much about reggae you're in for a real treat!! Definately inspiring and uplifting; guaranteed to make your head bob and your feet move - you're gonna want to dance wherever you are. Enjoy!!!!!!!
