For extra laughs, check out the liner notes. The credit "Cover Concept By Bryan Ferry" really had me giggling. I could just imagine him saying (in... British accent) "hey guys, I'm so damn handsome, Let's just get a shot of me dressed like the Great Gatsby with a come-hither-look on my face standing in front of a swimming pool. That would make a great cover." And you know what? In a way, it did?

Killer packs raw tenderness into these. .......2006-12-31
The Killer is My Man. Jerry Lee was a rocker when I was in highschool. When I got older I moved into classical music and opera. In the last decade I have been listening to country as well. And that's where I rediscovered the Killer. He is the Best. When he sings country standards he makes them his own, making me forget who first made the song famous. On this CD Jerry Lee puts his own stamp on two famous Merele Haggard standards, done differently but as well as Hag. Jerry Lee sings with open human abandon, which makes him so easy to love, his songs so easy to relate to. He is also a genius. When I was a girl he was thought to be too naughty, but my life experience has shown that we are on the same field, no one better than another. However, musically speaking, Jerry Lee is the Best. Listen to him and stomp and weep.
Killer Country.......2004-11-28
In the late 1960s Jerry Lee Lewis moved back to the music he grew up with--country music. This disc brings together 2 of his very best country albums for Smash/Mercury plus few cuts from a third. The music is fine late 1960s honky tonk style, with excellent readings of some Merle Haggard, Webb Pierce, and Jimmie Rodgers songs. Some of Lewis' finest country titles are here, including "Another Time, Another Place." I especially enjoy his performance with Linda Gail Lewis on "We Live In Two Different Worlds," simply one of the best songs Fred Rose ever wrote. Of course some rockabilly rowdiness slips in, it would not be the Killer without it. Essential country music for the true country fan.
A Great Cd.......2004-04-28
It's Sad that "The Killer" is always over looked, but this cd makes his statement of "Elvis may be the greatest, but I'm the best." true. "There stands the glass," and "Waiting for a train." Is enough reason to buy this cd alone. The problem of why he is often overlooked may have to do with the amount of poor quality bootleg cds that bares his name. Unlike Elvis who's estate clamped down on the bootleg and poor quaility music, Jerry Lee Lewis's bootlegs are all over the place and his great studio work is hard to find. This is impart do to the many different labels that he has been signed to. I hope at some point he will get control of his music catalog and re-release his great studio work from the sun records era and those of his country recordings era, but until that happens this cd is a great place to start.
Some of his best work, and thus among THE BEST.......2003-06-06
These recordings are among the most commercially successful country records ever done. Moreover, they are among the most artistically successful recordings done by anyone doing straight bar brand country music. JLL just kills these songs, he makes them all personal, he makes them all live, and makes you believe he has lived them.
Contrary to what some others say, JLL has been doing his own interpretations of the country classics since his original sun records the 1950s. His version of Crazy Arms (from 56 or 57 I believe) redefined the song. his version of You Win Again did something rare. He took a song away from Hank Williams. Today if you played or sang Hanks version of the song anywhere, it wouldnt be recognized, and wouldn't be as good as the standard way JLL does it. He did all kinds of country standards during the late 50s and early 1960s when Sun had him doing hundreds of recordings to be salted away until he made a come back.
JLL's work in the 1960s before these country recordings was not "in the wilderness." Some of the rock albums he did for Mercury Smah and Mercury represent some of the best rock and rockabilly recordings ever made, more mature musically, but wilder than things he did in the 1950. Get the two live recordings, one from Panther Hall in Houston, the other from Birmingham if you want to see the light.
It is interesting that these country side are a triumph of JLL as a singer. he barely plays the piano on some selections, on the last selections he plays no piano at all, but these are all classics. Anyone around anywhere where any music was coming off a radio or a juke box anywhere during the late 1960s and eary 1970s heard these songs.
This is among Jerry's best. That means it is among the world's greatest.
Dont forget JLL is still rocking his life away at 66 years old he is still pounding that piano!
killer country.......2003-06-01
Jerry Lee finally made it to Finland 10 years ago. And the audience loved him. Not so much for his old rockers (his age started to show on those numbers) but for the real country tunes that he suddenly started to play. The audience in the huge Hartwall arena listened in awe: this was a man who had walked through hell and made a mess out of his personal life in the early 60's, then made a comeback and in the early 90's could still sing about heartbreak and being on the dole like nobody else on this planet. A stunning and captivating performance! And this album, this 2fer is just great, it has some of those songs he sang that night, like "What made Milwaukee famous" (we Finns love that one!)and the ironic "She even wake me up...". They say Jerry Lee was a bad boy. Maybe so, but he sure gave us some great music!

America's Disco Queen Gets SAW/PWL Flair.......2006-12-26
It was a match made in heaven. Take one part Disco Queen and mix it with three parts Hit Factory and you get absolute brilliance!! Yes, the masters of Euro-Pop/Disco/Dance--Stock, Aitken, Waterman have given Donna Summer a winning combination of soul, funk and spunk that just doesn't quit!
Along with the SAW/PWL roster of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Sinitta and Hazell Dean comes a wealth of sound fusion and brilliance that still lets Donna Summer's style shine clearly and unmistakably. Starting with the signature track, "This Time I Know It's For Real," you know this is SAW/PWL genius on full throttle. Donna kicks into even higher gear with her own brand of vocal punch and bite. It's all this song needs to place it in Eurodance and Eurodisco's Hall Of Fame.
Furthering the tradition, "Breakaway" and "Love's About To Change My Heart" are yet more of the prime samplings in the SAW/PWL brain trust. Gutsier and more emotionally charged, Donna manages to make these tracks her own yet still lets the SAW gloss make its mark.
This album is pure PLATINUM in every sense-made from the perfect equation!
Highlights include "When Love Takes Over You," "If It Makes You Feel Good" and "Whatever Your Heart Desires"

Another Place - Another Hit!.......2006-03-02
Donna Summer has done it again. Another Place and Time is just what the doctor ordered for the hard core Donna fans all over the world. I first heared this recording back in the summer of 1989 while living in Atlanta GA. I was a fan from the very first time I heard Love To Love You Baby back when it was released in the early 70's. I've been listening ever sense.
I lost my copy of Another Place and Time in Hurricane Katrina. My salon was located on the beach in Biloxi and was completely wiped out by her fury. Needless to say that all of my cd's were taken with everything else. I'm in the process of re-building my cd collectiuon and this one was at the top of the list. If you've never heard this fantastic recording, you're missing Donna's optimum vocal range. This is the true Donna, doing what she does best - Sing! Play On Donna! All the Best! Stephen
Long Time Coming.......2005-09-01
It seemed forever for This Time I Know its for Real to make it
from the clubs to mass release..Rumored David Geffen refused
to release it, it's the best album Donna released in the 80's
Thank goodness for Atlantic Records...Loves about to Change my Heart is definitely one of her best after her heyday as the Queen of Disco..my memories of this song are very vivid with the amount of airplay it got in the LA area during my visit there Labor Day 1989...

a great place..........2006-03-14
Before smooth jazz there was Hiroshima doing there thing, this was the lp that introduced me to them and I love this record 21yrs later! the intrumentals are still played to this day, the vocals, 'Save Yourself For Me' got great airplay in 1985 featuring the amazing voice of Barbara Long, 'The Game', 'Undercover', 'What's It To Ya, & 'Touch and Go' have that great 80's keyboard sound, 'Stay Away' is wonderful, a great record in the Hiroshima catalog!
Traditional Japanese Music + Jazz = Fusion.......2005-11-16
Although Fusion Jazz wasn't used much when this album came out in 1985, Hiroshima was definitely a pioneer in that area. They were the first Japanese group to have a video on BET (Black Entertainment Television). The Best cuts on this album are One Wish and Another Place. A great album to listen to!!
classic hiroshima.......2003-06-25
If you like smooth jazz with an interesting twist, you will love this CD. The Japanese instruments and vocals by June are the wonderful combination. This CD is a great introduction to Hiroshima and is perfect to listen to even though it was cut almost two decades ago.
A must for Hiroshima and Jazz fans alike!.......2002-02-06
"Another Place" was my first Hiroshima CD, but it certainly wasn't my last! The instrumental "One Wish" is their greatest musical masterpiece ever, and I doubt that they'll ever top it. Barbara Long did an excellent job in performing "Save Yourself For Me". This song is great to listen to when you're with someone special, on a couch or sharing a blanket while sitting underneath a sea of stars.
Though this album's instrumentals are sensational, I decided to give it four stars. I enjoyed "Save Yourself For Me" & "Stay Away", but the rest of the songs with lyrics are rather hokey, and they don't do justice for Barbara Long's tremendous talent for singing.
That aside, "Another Place" is a classic & memorable piece from Hiroshima.
great music and also spiritual reality of a 2 year old.......2001-11-04
My favorite music is vocal jazz and this is the best example of that around. I also "interpret" this for 2-year olds as follows.
Touch and Go -- learning to touch noses. Paying attention to God with a lively interest, not bringing up irrelevant frivolous issues.
Stay Away -- learning to walk on your own. Finding suitable substitutes when you lose your crutches, instead of guilt-tripping people and/or God. Soul sensitivity.
Save Yourself for Me -- learning to take a bath, go to bed, and get some rest after a long day. Having goodwill toward others with more privileges and confessing your eavesdropping.
The Game -- learning to eat without food fights and cleanup and share leftovers. Learning not blame someone else for the mess you make, or admit your part in it. Harmony without waste or deadlock. Doing without if you don't behave.
What's It To Ya -- learning to tolerate the excruciating pain/accidents of the potty process. Grin and bear it instinct. Having spirit without veiled threats of revenge. Suffering indignities and injustice courageously. Don't claim it didn't happen, trying to dispute the bare facts.
Undercover -- Learning to enjoy dreaming but still get up in the morning. Change your mind -- don't be a slackard. Get flexible and in-sync with God's assumptions about your responsibilities, and exercize your gifts.
One Wish, I Do Remember -- Learning to pray that blood doesn't mean death when you brush your teeth without saying no or lieing. Be quiet and do it earnestly. Don't lie. Don't expect good results without earnest effort.

Ritter's literate, highly romantic brand of folk has gained him attention on both sides of the Atlantic. Hello Starling, his third album, sees him pushing the boat out further and trying to move beyond the evident influence of Bob Dylan. It doesn't always work: the up-tempo "Kathleen" and "Man Burning," with their swirling organs, clearly carry the mark of Zimmerman, as does the soft and heartfelt "You Don't Make It Easy Babe," a troubled ode to a troubling girl. But this doesn't necessarily matter. Ritter's vocal performances may lack the intensity and weight of Dylan or Leonard Cohen (an equally heavy influence, most evidently on the track "Wings"), but he has a charm and lightness of touch that will endear him to many. Beyond this, it's a real joy to hear a musician attempting ambitious narratives ("Wings," "Bone of Song") where many singer-songwriters cower cravenly behind impressionistic cut-up techniques or, worse still, spatter us with self-obsessed drivel. Perhaps a few albums on, Ritter will truly find his own voice and be considered a real find. --Dominic Wills
Customer Reviews:
Following in a grand tradition.......2005-07-27
Hello Starling is the third album by Josh Ritter, a singer-songwriter and guitarist originally from Moscow ID who has been steadily building support since his first self-released album in 1999, particularly in his native States and in Ireland, where he initially toured supporting the Frames. For this album, Dave Odlum from the Frames was enlisted as producer and the album was recorded over a fortnight in February 2002 in a converted dairy barn near Angers in France (also used by Dave Odlum for an EP with Gemma Hayes in 2001), and with Josh's touring band augmented by Dave Odlum helping out on guitar and mandolin.
As a teenager, Josh Ritter had been inspired by discovering Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash playing together on the Nashville Skyline album, and has also acknowledged Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch among his influences (there is a nod to Townes Van Zandt on this album's Kathleen, also the title of one of his songs). He studied American History through narrative music at college, spending six months in Scotland at the School of Scottish Folk Studies, and also made a study of American religious music, American Civil War songs and late 19th century popular ballads, parlour songs and cowboy songs.
Although he has found his own voice and a clear natural style it is clear from his stripped back approach and the meticulously recorded instruments that he has learned well and deeply from all these guiding legacies and adaptations. This is an album that has been built to last and leaves one keenly anticipating the next.
There are a lot of things you can do.......2005-05-15
Buy this album and listen to it.
Just like bright eyes brilliant or better.
Reminicent of Early Springsteen.......2005-03-19
Josh Ritter's amazing talent should not go unnoticed for long here in the states as he's such a rising star in Ireland/UK that it won't be long before everyone knows his name. Very reminincent of early Springsteen with his unperfect but endearing voice, his raw passion, and superb song writing this guy is going far!
I dare anyone to listen to "Kathleen" and not be humming before the end of the song and then replaying it to learn all the words. The song promises to stay in your head and heart long after you've listend to the CD!
One of the best singer/songwriters in a very long time! If you get a chance to see him perform live don't walk but RUN to stand in line to see him....you won't be sorry!
Hitcooper.com Review.......2004-09-28
This album is pure, raw folk music. Josh is an amazing poet with a simple, sweet voice. I guess he's huge over in Ireland/England... I'm sure he will soon be huge here in the US... I recommend jumping on his fan bandwagon now... And I noticed that Hitcooper.com chose him as one of their featured artists... Another proof that he's a true artist that's definitely worth listening to...
Beautiful, just stunning!.......2004-05-10
Josh Ritter has an amazing voice. These are my seperate opinions, with 10 the best, 0 the worst.
Bright Smile: 9. Maybe this should have been a little bit faster, but a perfect start to a beatiful fol rock CD.
Kathleen: 10. He hits a great high not, the prime of his voice. A real find.
You Don't Make It Easy Babe: 8. Not my kind of music, but still good.
Man Burning: 10,000. JOSH!!!! THIS ROCKS!!!!! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH!!!!
The rest are 8's, with the exception of the Bad Actress and Bone of Song.
Thanks Josh! You really made music!

Customer Reviews:
review of a review.......2005-06-20
this isn't a review of this album. it is a review of the first review, which i give zero stars. this guy needs to pull his head out of his anal cavity. First of all, david sanborn isn't a jazz tenor saxophonist. he plays alto most of the time and even he will tell you that he plays instrumental R&B...not jazz. There is no such thing as "a wide range of ability." Learn some grammar and semantics. I bet you can't name three more tenor players...maybe JOHN COLTRANE. Don't revue anymore albums, guy. Please. For Humanity.
MALE JAZZ VOCALISTS ARE HARD TO FIND!.......2004-06-29
This deep tenor voice singer has a wide range of ability to sing.He can control his voice like a talented JAZZ TENOR SAX PLAyER,say,DAVID SANBORN.In this album,he scats, sing in a pure jazz setting, including,JOE LOVANO,shows us happiness which he holds at the bottom of his heart. This is the real gems that FANS OF MALE JAZZ SINGERS have to dig.A nice introductory for KEVIN MAHOGANY!
Solid polished wood - not just a veneer!.......2001-03-08
This is the first Kevin Mahogany (what a name for jazz singer!) album I've bought, but I suspect it won't be the last. I'd long thought that there are lots of good female jazz singers around these days, but where were all the guys? Well, I think I've found one. Kevin has chosen a well-mixed selection of songs for this album : about half are self-written, the rest are all from well-known musicians and composers. There are a couple of standards like "Nature Boy" and "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning". The usual danger with items like these is that they are either poor copies of other singers (in this case Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra) or else in order to make them unique the artist just ends up making them sound plain weird and doesn't do justice to the original melodies. Mr. Mahogany successfuly treads the narrow line in between to make sure you know both the tune and that it's his version of it. There are other songs he has taken such as Charlie Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (which I'd never heard as a vocal version before), and Jon Hendrick's vocalese "Cloudburst" where he applies quite different techniques and proves just as successful. His voice is agile and beautifully controlled which makes his scat singing a joy to listen to - I thought this was almost a lost art. There's one odd point on the album which I guess must be down to contractual or diary issues. The saxophonist Joe Lovano, whom I admire greatly, appears but only on the first 3 tracks. Maybe he couldn't make the other recording dates - who knows. A real shame as his contribution on these is excellent. Are there any weak points? Well, yes. The lightest and most 'easy-listening' track on the CD is unfortunately one of Kevin's own : "I Believe She Was Talking 'Bout Me". This is sung as a duet with Randy Travis (I had to check to find out who he is - I'm not in to country) and while it sounds as though they enjoyed hamming it up in the studio, it really is too lightweight to live alongside the other interpretations on this disc. You want to listen to the others time after time, and this one doesn't really merit repeat hearing too often. You can get tired of it. But hey, if this is the worst I can say, it shows how good the rest must be. I've given this album 4 stars but don't think of this a second league award. I tend to reserve 5 stars for proven classics beyond dispute - I suspect no more than about a dozen CDs out of my collection of 500+ would merit 5 stars. As far as I'm concerned 4 is top quality modern jazz/blues and this is it.
A Surprise!.......2000-01-27
Since I admired Kevin Mahogany's voice and style, I got this album of his, coming across it at a store. I was surprised by it since it is more jazzier than "My Romance", much more daring (though I liked that album alot). This one feels as if Kevin is in a smokey club with his band scatting, singing, flirting. Some of the pieces are "harder" to catch in the beginning, but then the more digestible ones come - the duet with Randy Travis is fun and good! I like Nature Boy, the title song, Cloadbursts and of course, Fix the Mix! Give this CD a chance, Kevin is wonderful!

Customer Reviews:
The Best CD Sandi Patti Ever Made.......2006-12-26
Released way back in 1990, "Another Time, Another Place" is far and away her best work. The intro song sets the stage for the worship to follow, "Unto Us." The duet with Wayne Watson of the title track is highly emotional and is 'well sold' by both artists. "I Lift My Hands" by Bob Farrell is excellent towards the end of the album. "Who Will Call Him King of Kings" is a powerful multi-octave anthem. It ends with the worshipful "O Calvary's Lamb," featuring one measure in 5/4 time.
This was the final high water mark for Sandi Patti. The rest that follows will always be compared to this CD.
Another Time, Another Place, Another Great Album from Patty.......2005-10-15
This is truly one of the best albums, if not the best that Sandi has produced. The entire collection of recordings is all very inspirational and uplifting. From the duet title song with Wayne Watson to the incredible sounds of "Oh Calvary's Lamb", the CD is a must have for any Christian Music lover or Sandi Patty Fan.
Also, it seems as though many Patty lover's were somewhat disappointed at the direction of this CD, being that it was a sudden departure from her previous style and use of vocals, however I think it proves how diverse her voice is and marketable to listeners of all ages and style.
Solid Effort.......2005-01-21
This early 90's album demonstrates Patty's impressive vocal versatility, as she abandons her trademark mulit-octave wail for a more subtle (though not less powerful) delivery. The key is the excellent material, which contains a vast array of styles. The intro "Unto Us" is pretty standard for Patty, but the title track fares much better. "Another Time..." is a superbly written song, holding back emotion until just the right moment. A few tracks later, there's a nice duet with Amy Grant ("Unexpected Friends"), followed by the breezy, yet ironically haunting "I Give You Peace." The song utilizes all of Patty's range, but in a very muted way. At the end of track, a choir of Sandi Patty's echo each other in rounds, and the result is the richest musicality she's ever produced.
The rest of the album paces itself well. "Rejoice" is another Patty standard; "Willing to wait" is a fun, Midler-esque number. The album peaks again, however, with the powerful "Who Will Call Him King of Kings," another great song which tempts Patty to go over the edge with the glass-shattering upper register that she's famous for, but suprisingly, she does not, and it still works for her. Finally, the end track "O Calvary's Lamb" peacefully whisks us out with a quiet, rolling storm.
The gospel hall-of-famer has many diverse chapters in her singing career, including children's records, a spanish album, hymns-only albums, and of course, the classics ("Morning Like This," etc...). Though she may always be remembered for her ability to reach non-human notes with ease, "Another Time,..." is Patty's best work; it never goes over-the-top, never slows too much, and never misses the mark. And best of all, it shows a whole new side of a very special vocalist.
Deeply Moving Album.......1999-09-02
Far and away her best CD, a meaningful experience from beginning to end. The duets are career highlights and each song is like a polished gem.
It brought back convictions I tried to pretend I didn't have.......1999-04-08
This album is by far and wide the best Sandi Patti has ever recorded. Usually there are a few songs on CD's I skip over. Not on this one. Every single song moves me. Every time I get off of the beaten path, this CD reminds me of where I need to be. Thank you Sandi.

ENDLESS EMOTIONS !!!.......2007-06-19
This is the first time i hear Bunky Green's music and it's absolutely exceptional !!! He reminds me a past giant as Coltrane but in a modern or avant-guarde dimension... In this cd you can find great compositions and a well-balanced sense of improvisation with fantastic solos !!! I consider this cd very near the perfect album, no doubt, 5 stars.
Wild sax.......2007-06-01
This has to be one of the most interesting inside/outside takes on the art of the alto sax I have ever heard. And it comes from a 70--something. Extraordinary technique with great imagination on original and standard material. Always unpredictable, sometimes difficult, but always fascinating. 5 stars.
Finally!.......2007-02-17
Those of us who are fans of jazz saxophonist and composer Bunky Green have been waiting a long time for a new recording to be released. About 15 years actually. (The last one being the landmark album "Healing the Pain" released on the Delos label.) We have saxophonist Steve Coleman (a past student of Bunky's) to thank for helping to get this one recorded and released. In addition to producing the record, Coleman was also instrumental in hooking Bunky up with the rhythm section.
After 15 years of built up anticipation one might worry the actual experience of listening to this album might disappoint. That it might not live up to expectations. Well, there's no need to worry here. This record lives up to and exceeds all expectations. The rhythm section, composed of Jason Moran on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums, does a great job of both supporting and pushing Bunky. Moran's solos in particular are quite captivating. He really does have a strong personal voice on the piano. But what really stands out, without surprise really, is the alto sax of Bunky Green. That this man isn't listened to and talked about more in the world of jazz is really a crime. His playing is so direct and honest that it almost catches you off guard. There's no ego or BS w/ Bunky. What you see (or in this case, hear) is what you get. (And having been lucky enough to study with him in college I can tell you that he's just as beautifully honest and unfiltered a person as he is a player.) It's quite obvious throughout this recording that Bunky's skill on the saxophone has only increased w/ age. From the point of view of sheer technique, his playing is really quite astounding. But Bunky never plays for the sake of showing off or impressing. All feats of technical prowess are there simply as a means of expressing something deeply personal. His technique frees him to go anywhere he (or the music) wants to. At times it's aggressive, other times subtle, but always very honest and personal. Nobody sounds like Bunky. Listening to this album you start wondering more and more why he isn't hailed as one of the more important voices in jazz today. Possibly it's because of the lack of recordings, or possibly he's just not considered "marketable" enough. Whatever the reason, let's hope that this new record is a sign of much more to come, and let's hope that it doesn't take another 15 years to get here!
In short, I highly recommend this album. I believe it's one of the more important cd's to come out in recent years and you should buy it! (Direct enough for ya? :D )
