Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Like Mary Chapin Carpenter?.......2003-02-08

Then you will like Carrie Newcomer. Deep, rich vocals and nice, melancholic lyrics. This is a solid CD. From the first to the last tune, you will appreciate her luxurious voice. Take a gamble! You will win

5 out of 5 stars Definitely one of her best albums.......1999-01-15

I was introduced to Carrie's music by a another very talented singer when I was 18 years old. ALthough I'm only 23 now and most would say I couldn't possibly understand all the dynamics of her lyrics, I would have to disagree. When I have searched helplessly for words to convey my feelings about important people and issues in my life, I always seem to come back to Carrie's lyrics to find meaning, clarity, and heartfelt expression of exactly what I am thinking. I've seen the reviews that question her wide range of stylistic preferences and always wonder how the reviewers have missed the "big picture" of the song or album. Every album she creates has its own unique personality and should be listened to with an ear for amazing lyrics and an open heart.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute trusty must-have for contemplative roadtrips!.......1998-11-12

I agree with everything in the previous review - this selection has touched my heart again & again. Carrie has the unique ability to show the value and insights gained from the normal (& seemingly mundane) feelings and emotions which we all feel, while encouraging us to maintain hope. Though not necessarily written as such, many of her songs could well play as the soundtrack/commentary of certain times in many of our lives - a fine '1st album to buy' intro to this wonderful artist!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Carrie Newcomer's early albums - a must have.......1998-10-25

Although I like all of Carrie Newcomer's albums, if I had to choose a favorite one, this would be it. Though the musical arrangements on this 1994 album are not as sophisticated as those on "Bird or the Wing," "My Father's Only Son," or "My True Name," Carrie Newcomer's songwriting and vocal performances are strong and moving. The songs flow together smoothly, from the rousing "Only One Shoe," in which Newcomer embraces optimism, to the gentle "Who Have You Been (and who are you now)" There are several very strong songs on this album. Besides the two already mentioned, "Hold On" is one of the most reassuring songs for anyone who has suffered through a difficult period in their lives. "Meet You on Monday" is a upbeat long song, and "In the City" and "Playing with Matches" are strong statements about homelessness and environmental awareness respectively.

I would recommend this album strongly to anyone who already knows Newcomer's work or wants to be introduced to it.
