About the Artist
Dan Oakenhead was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in the thick heat of summer, 1951. Taking up the guitar at the age of 15, he began writing songs that same year, appearing in local performance and talent events. Early on he gravitated toward the poignant and humorous songwriting of Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs. During the late 60s and early 70s, Dan's musical direction was shaped by the acoustic work that would emerge full force with James Taylor, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Eagles, and Jimmie Spheeris. Moving west to Nevada, Alaska, and finally settling in Colorado, Dan further developed his guitar styles along eclectic lines, shadowing the playing of Doc Watson and Leo Kottke. He studied classical and jazz piano, and began learning the Irish whistle from Shannon Heaton of Siucra and Sean Smythe of Lunasa. Dan's music was born in the new-folk and folk-rock tradition of the late 60s, and now expands the spirit, moving to broader musical styles and reaching for higher lyrical ground.

Dan's four CDs, Road To Everafter (1999), Twice Around The Mountain (2000), Over The Blue Edge (2001), and Sky Geezer (2003) on the Northern Sky Music label, feature lyrical songs, acoustic country-folk, and instrumental phantasms. His unique beyond-the-edge perspective can be described as a combination of John Prine and the Dalai Lama. At the piano, Dan connects with the improvisational influences of Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. On the low and high whistle he evokes the sounds of the slow traditional airs of Ireland and Scotland.

In performance Dan weaves guitar, lyrics, piano, and whistle into a comfortable flow of styles and transitions. He eases audiences into amusing contemplation through deep instrumental expression, and sets up an easy going connection with folks through vivid lyrical images and spontaneous storytelling.

Dan has performed throughout the western U.S., as well as in Europe, Ireland, England, and New Zealand. He has opened for the likes of Tom Waits and Chris Brubeck, and has collaborated in concerts with such fine artists as Steve Boynton and Gravity Struck. Recent shows have included appearances at the Alaska Folk Festival and an enthusiasticallyreceived opening for world-renowned Scottish band, Capercaille. Favoring special performances where folks gather for song and story, Dan can be heard at preferred music halls and listening rooms.

More Great Cosmic American Music!.......2003-03-09

Another outstanding effort from master songwriter/storyteller/musician Dan Oakenhead! Dan blends blues, folk, jazz and country (with just a pinch of pop) to deliver a fine listening experience. Starting with the blues-driven "Pick Me Up" featuring some great harmonica, followed by a great sixties'-like folk anthem "One More Turn Around The Wheel", this CD is packed full with delights and surprises. I defy anyone to resist the well-known "toe-tap/head bob move" while listening to "Cooperation", another classic ode to life in America during these times. My personal favorite is "Cliffs of Moher", a tribute to the beauty, spirit and mysticism in this wee part of the Emerald Isle.

Dan has dedicated his life to his craft - his musicianship just gets better and better and better! Whether it's another guitar style, piano, synthesizers, harmonica or tin whistles - his playing and singing will grab you by the throat and not let go until it's over. YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS CD!
