One Of Few.......2006-09-10
Bert is fantastic and this album is fantastic. I would never call Bert a guitar "virtuoso" though, I would call him a creative genius. His acoustic guitar arrangements sound at first oddly foriegn and then somehow, reconfiguring the patterns in your brain, change into the most natural and complete compositions you've ever heard. His lyrical style exactly compliments the style he plays on guitar and he comes off as a very convincing poet, storyteller. Bert and his music seem to come from the same place myth and folklore come from.
Bert Jansch gets back to the basics and plays his guitar.......2005-05-10
"Rosemary Lane" is a 1971 album from Bert Jansch that finds him getting back to the basics. In this case that means Jansch playing his guitar without any added orchestrations. "Nicola" was the last Jansch album I heard for the first time and after some of those arrangements the simplicity of this album was a joyful discovery. These recordings are so basic that you can hear Jansch's fingers rubbing the strings of his guitar. Jansch is one of the great acoustic guitar virtuosos of his generation, equally comfortable playing the blues, American folk music, or, as is largely the case here, the more traditional music of the British isles.
The rather Renaissance tone of this album is captured in the second and third tracks, the title song being a traditional work interpreted by Jansh and the acoustic piece "M'Lady Nancy." There are certainly pieces that are more contemporary in both origin and execution, but the Robert Johnson written instrumental "Alman," the traditional songs "Reynardine" and "Sylvie," and the instrumentals "Peregrinations" co-written by Jansch and John Renbourn and "Sarabana" written by Corelli & Corelli, are the heart of the album. The proof of this is that when you look at "The Best of Bert Jansch" album, these are the tracks that are included in that collection.
If there is one noticeable difference between the "Rosemary Lane" album and Jansch's first self-titled album from 1965 is that he is much more comfortable and effective as a singer. But the chief attraction here remains listening to this guy play the guitar. In that regard this is one of Jansch's best albums and falls in the "must have" category for his legion of fans.

Fiddler on The roof(original London Cast).......2001-11-24
I got the CD immidiatly with excellent condition. I have really been enjoying it.(^^)
a fiddler on the roof, sounds crazy, no?.......2001-02-19
this is a really good cd to model one's performance on if performing in a production of the hit musical. all the main songs are on this CD except "the rumor" and "chava ballet(little bird)." topol is amazing as the charismatic tevye. his voice and ununciations are a lot better than zero mostelle's. a while ago, my high school did fiddler on the roof, and at first the guy playing tevye modeled his voice after zero mostelle and it sounded like crap, but once he got this version, his performance was really good. plus, this musical is really good. the music may take a little while to get used to, but it is awesome after a few weeks of steady listening.
TOPTASTIC TOPOL!.......2000-02-02
How can you not like fiddler on the roof, its a classic, its amazing, as are the songs and topol himself. You can not get a version of fiddler on the roof, that doesn't have topol in it, i mean he is fiddler on the roof, without him you've been coned, its not fiddler..... This CD is the best version i've ever heard, and believe me i hear it a lot.
Rather good.......1999-12-29
This CD took me a while to get used to, but when I did, I liked it quite a lot. The people on this recording have voices that appeal to only certain types of music lovers. They are not sickeningly sweet sounding, nor are they your normal Broadway belters. I'd say that if you like the quality of singers like Pattie LuPone, then you could appreciate this album. Other than that, I think the cast works well together. The songs are very catchy, although it does slow down a bit after the first act. Nevertheless, I reccomend this cast above others because, to me, it just sounds more realistic and emotional.
It's pretty okay for those of us who know the music........1999-05-17
However, the recording is really sad. For anyone trying to find a version to listen to for the first time, don't get this one! It'll turn you off real fast. Topol (Tevye) is alright but it's hard to tell because of the old recording. The cast as a whole sounds rather inexperienced, like they haven't worked together long. Let's just say that I've listened to it once and the only track that I listen to anymore is the "Bottle Dance" (fully orchestral). Don't be discouraged, though. It's great stuff if you can find the right album. I haven't listened to any other recordings--only live productions, so I couldn't recommend any others for you. If you have any suggestions, mail me.

Customer Reviews:
the best.......2001-07-23
This may well be my favorite album of recorded music, by anyone. By 1971 Jansch was recognized in Britain as their finest folk guitarist; as of that date he had put out six albums on his own and five with his group Pentangle in six years. Almost all of them had been smashing successes in the U.K., and some had even done well in the U.S. For this recording Bert chose a simple, intimate approach featuring just him and his guitar, and focussing on traditional folk, classical, and folk-blues material. The result was a spectacular display of the art of solo acoustic guitar and guitar accompaniment employing a range of interesting fingering devices and tunings, and always perfectly complementing the music. The traditional piece "Reynardine" is given a dramatic yet fairytale-like reading that fully brings out its dreamlike quality; the story in another traditional piece, "Sylvie," is told as much through the instrumental accompaniment as it is in words--a tale of wrenching, unrelenting anguish. The boozy "Nobody's Bar" takes the blues to a step beyond itself in the form of a mini-documentary on the world of the bottle; Corelli's "Alman" shows just how good Jansch is at picking up the essence of Baroque style counterpoint and adapting it to a more familiar emotional terrain. And so on. Jansch's style has sometimes been described as "Baroque blues" for the unique way he has integrated contrapuntal form and motion into his basically traditional roots, and this album gives the best view of this element of his art. To my mind, the only other album he has done that rivals it both in sheer creativity and--taste--is "Jack Orion."
Bert's most expressive album.......2000-06-16
This is one of the finest works that exists of celtic/blues. Bert uses his guitar and vocals to stun his audience into silence. Truely one of the best albums to emerge out of the folk scene.
The Ultimate Jansch.......1999-05-09
This perhaps is one of the greatest folk recordings of all time.Armed only with an acoustic guitar,Jancsh demonstrates that the spare spaces achieved through the guitar and voice defies any time lines.Nowhere do you feel locked into 1971.Pink Moon by Nick Drake is the only other recording I can compare to this one.If you want to travel with Jansch down Rosemary Lane,be prepared for a moving experience.

A Tale of Two Berts.......2001-07-18
The coupling of 1969's Birthday Blues and 1971's Rosemary Lane showcases Scottish singer-songwriter-guitarist Bert Jansch in two different settings. On Birthday Blues (tracks 1-12), Jansch's fifth album, he is supported in various combinations by Ray Warleigh (alto saxophone, flute), Duffy Power (harmonica), and the Pentangle rhythm section of Danny Thompson (bass) and Terry Cox (drums). As such, much of this album is very much in the vein of his work with Pentangle: wonderful instrumentals ("Miss Heather Rosemary Sewell," "Birthday Blues"), blues-based compositions ("I've Got a Woman," "Promised Land," "Blues"), and traditional folk-derived material ("Come Sing Me a Happy Song...," "Tree Song," "A Woman Like You"). All songs are Jansch originals, except "Wishing Well," which is a Jansch-Briggs composition. [Note: This album was produced by Shel Talmy, who also was the producer for Pentangle's first three albums.]
Because of touring and recording commitments with Pentangle, Jansch's sixth solo album would be another two years and was a return to a more traditional approach and featured Jansch only on vocal and guitar. In addition to ten Jansch originals, there are three traditional songs: "Rosemary Lane," perhaps the loveliest song he has ever recorded; "Reynardine," a folk standard that features some beautiful guitar work; and "Sylvie," Jansch's own version of "Once I Had a Sweetheart" which Jacqui McShee sang with Pentangle. Simply put, this is some of the most moving music you'll ever hear.
While Jansch is revered in the British Isles as a keeper of the flame of traditional music, he is scarcely known in this country even though artists like Neil Young count him as a major influence. If you're looking for a solid introduction into the music of Bert Jansch this or the recently released The Pentangle Family would be a great way to get started. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Great twofer!.......2000-08-15
These are two of Jansch's earlier albums, originally released in 1969 (Birthday Blues) and 1971 (Rosemary Lane). Both are beautifully intimate and represent Jansch at his best. "Rosemary Lane" is all Bert: vocals and guitar. Nowhere will you find an album that better demonstrates the art of solo guitar accompaniment! Note especially the solo verse in 'Sylvie,' which conveys incredible emotional drama without deviating a single note from the same accompaniment line he uses in all the other verses. But just about every cut, including the three classically-inspired solo instrumentals, also features the last word in intelligent space-filling and inventive fingerings. "Birthday Blues" is not so well known an album, but frames Bert in small combo settings with sidemen like Danny Thompson, Duffy Power, Terry Cox, and Ray Warleigh to produce a charming effect not unlike Jansch's work with Pentangle (and of course Thompson and Cox were also in that group). There's not a poor cut on either album, and by the time you're done listening to them you will amply understand why Bert's style has alternately been referred to as "Baroque blues," or "folk jazz."

what the young folk said.......2005-05-05
A lot of folks make a lot of claims about which are the great albums of the early 70's British Folk Scare, and most make a pretty good case. The core Steeleye Span albums, the early Albion Band releases, any number of solo LP's by Peter Bellamy, The Dransfields, The earlier Watersons' albums, and, of course, The Pentangle albums. The Pentangle holds a particular spot, given the virtuosity of its musicians and the eclectic folk/jazz/rock roots of its music.
Bert Jansch's Rosemary Lane is a standout of the Pentangle solo material. Remarkable guitar playing and a rough hewn voice are startling even today; Jansch continues recording into the 21st century (though at a much reduced level of power) and has an unfortunate tendency to ramble off the map, musically speaking. That being said, Rosemary Lane is the beacon of his earlier work. From the tasty instrumental work to the excellent choice of songs, it is a first-rate work. The title song remains one of the great classics of the genre, a fascinating and moving piece not easily put out of your mind once you have heard it.
Bottom line- if you are putting together a core collection of British Folk Scare albums, this is an essential item.
Enjoy.
