It was said that the busy footsteps of commuters would come to a standstill insde Paris Metro train stations whenever the gifted accordion player Michael Ganian played his musettes there. Huge crowds would take pause and gather to listen to this brilliant musician, who created an entirely new genre of accordion music by blending the sounds of classical music, musette, world-beat, and jazz. JPMC Records is proud to be able to offer "Ici Paris," currently the only international release by this hard-to-find artist, who sadly was tragically killed in 2000, leaving us with only the few recordings he created during his short life. "Ici Paris" contains 26 of Ganian's compositions, on which he's joined by bassist Rudolf Smahel and drummer Vitezslav Vavrda. On several compositions, the trio is accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of the Czech Republic. Songs on this album include "Siene," "Carduelis de Musette," "Montparnasse Bienvenue," "Passion Tree," and "I Am In Heaven." His music does encompass a variety of styles and is truly unlike anything you've heard before. Supported by Smahel's capable walking bass lines and Vavrda's spirited drumming, Ganian is free to explore his complex compositions. Listening to any of the songs on this CD, you can almost imagine yourself sitting at a Parisian cafe or standing at the Metro station listening to Ganian with the rest of the awestruck crowd. "Ici Paris" includes works recorded from 1993 to 1999 and chronicles his development from vibrant street performer to accomplished composer. "Ici Paris" has consistently been JPMC Records' top selling album since its release in 2000 and we continue to get feedback from fans of Ganian's after purchasing the album.

The music of Michael Ganian is unique. Listening to this cd while sitting in the balcony and looking at the sunset on the ocean is an experience like none other. If you like the music of Astor Piazolla, Gotan Project or Bajofondo Tango Club, this cd will surpass your expectations! Definitely buy this cd.

This extraordinarily talented person was able to bring the main tunnel of the Paris Metro to a halt just by ... playing there. An Armenian from Yerevan Armenia could hypnotize Parisians playing French Cafe style accordion music. It combines melancholic intonations typical to Armenian music with optimistic French. This is an absolutely unique virtuoso in his genre.

    If you're looking for some ambiance music for your French restaurant in Iowa (especially if you have french fries on the menu), then this is the CD for you. With no recognizable artists, certainly not the ones who made these songs famous, this music is probably best as background to a loud conversation. Truly, this CD is about as close to Paris as Wonder bread is to a baguette.

    All I can say is that the previous reviewer must have cloth ears! No, it's not necessarily background music. The CD is a distillation of bal musette classics that originally were anthologised on the Parisian Fremeaux label. As such it's a handy introduction to the world of bal musette accordion and some of its greatest stars. It's not afraid to deal with the end of the music influenced by the amalgam of swing and manouche gypsy jazz. As for the sound I found nothing wrong with it- no rice krispies effects- and I go back to it again and again.

    This CD is terribly marred by the crackly, tinny recordings. I was not aware how spoiled I am by modern recording technology until I heard this CD. I was totally disappointed by the quality of the recordings. I expected them to be remastered not sounding like they were taped from grandmere's old albums. I don't even listen to it because it is so bad. I'm still looking for some good French background music, because this cd is not it.

    These are yummy vingnettes from a bygone era, yet so typically "French." Don't be put off by the word "accordion." You scarcely notice it as these beautiful passages roll by. There is yet an added treat in the appearance of Edith Piaf for those who might be fans. I play this CD over and over, and still can't get enough. Cafe de Paris comes highly recommended.

    To paraphrase a bumpersticker: "Use an accordion, go to France."

    French accordion music is very specifically French; you won't hear dorky polkas or Cajun/Italian/Irish/cowboy music here. This music is so purely evocative of the feeling you have in Europe: cobblestoned streets; cafés at night filled with chatting, laughing people; and time that encompasses a line back into history. Or at least back fifty years, when men wore their hats frontwards, and women wore gloves. It's a lush recording. You'll feel like your passport has been stamped: FRANCE.

    If you like accordion music you'll love this cd. It's great for having a romantic dinner with your loved one. Some wine, fresh cut flowers, candle light, a nice meal, and soft accordion music in the background will really set your night in the right direction.

    Musette is the melodious music, soft and sweet in character, that is the quintessential expression of cosmopolitan Parisian life. In a movie soundtrack, the sound of Paris is stereotypically musette. It began in the late 19th century when the inhabitants of Auvergne, an old province in central France, settled in Paris and brought with them their dance music played on a small, sweet toned bagpipe called a cabrette. Later, Italian immigrants to Paris substituted the accordion for the cabrette and, just after the turn of the 20th century, musette swept through France. Afterwards, musette incorporated aspects of popular French songs, latin and gypsy music, and American swing. This anthology brings together a mix of talented contemporary musicians who are masters of musette. They do a wide variety of musette styles that are an absolute pleasure to enjoy.
