5 out of 5 stars Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Album Made Even Better.......2006-12-09

Ideally all cd reissues should be this good. In The Falling Dark has always been a masterpiece. Bruce's 1976 album set a new standard of excellence for him. The lyrics, songwriting and musicianship (especially Bruce's guitar playing) are all exquisite. But I want to write briefly about Rounder Records Cockburn reissue program. At the time of this writing it has been probably 4 or 5 years since Rounder announced that they were re-releasing all of Bruce's catalog - all remastered, with new liner notes and with bonus tracks. Since Bruce's cd's haven't always sounded all that great this was welcome news to many of us, even if it meant that we would now be buying some of Bruce's records for the 3rd time. In my opinion the Rounder reissues have been a mixed blessing. First off - these reissues have slowed to a glacier like crawl. I believe that there was some sort of schedule to release 3 or 4 cd's at a time every 4 to 6 months. Lately it's been taking well over a year between batches. The bonus tracks on some of the reissues have been less than great. A mediocre instrumental track or 2 on "Dancing In The Dragons Jaws" and "Further Adventures Of" added nothing to these reissues. A single additional live song on "Humans" or "Big Circumstance" is nothing to get excited about either. The biggest disappointment to me was the 1977 live album Circles In The Stream. Rounder had a great opportunity to expand this to 2 cd's and put out some additional rare live 70's Bruce, but they neglected to do that and simply reissued it without any bonus material. On the plus side the remastering on every cd has been an improvement; on most a very significant improvement. BUT The stand-out best of all these reissues IMO is In The Falling Dark. The sound upgrade is incredible. Bruce's masterful guitar work and vocals are crystal clear; makes my previous cd sound like an 8-track. And the 4 bonus tracks are all great - a beautiful, lengthy 3rd instrumental for this album, the lost studio version of Red Brother Red Sister, the lovely Dweller By A Dark Stream, and a "new" Cockburn Christmas song - Shepherds (with a different melody than the one on his Christmas album). If you could only buy one of the Rounder reissues this is the one with the most to offer.

5 out of 5 stars "I'm Gonna Fly Some Day".......2006-03-14

'In The Falling Dark' is Bruce Cockburn's seventh and probably best studio album (only surpassed by his live in-concert album/CD; 'Circles In The Stream'). The album originally contained -10 tracks- however this re-release includes four additional bonus tracks. If you've never heard of Bruce Cockburn this is the album you should hear first. Get ready to experience the melodic, mystical and richly textured sound of a true innovator and consumate musican. From the very first track, 'Lord Of The Starfields' you'll find yourself drawn to the music in a way you've probably never been before. The music, lyrics and musicianship is impeccable.

Get this CD along with his live in concert 'Circles In The Stream' and 'Salt, Sun and Time.'

My Highest Recommendation!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding guitar work.......2003-07-04

Cockburn is a master of the guitar and this album highlights his amazing abilities and songwriting talents. This album is probably one of the least political and angry of Cockburn's work (though "Gavin's Woodpile" shows something of what is to come) and so in many ways makes a great introduction to his sheer musical ability. "Lord of the Starfields" is heartbreakingly beautiful. Cockburn's lyrics are poetry in their own right.

5 out of 5 stars I know exactly what he is singing about..........2003-04-02

Years ago I was sitting in an art class & I heard these words from a song "Lord of the Starfield, ancient of days, universe maker, here is a song in your praise..." All of a sudden I knew exactly what the song was about & the singer sounded like me. I asked the owner of the CD player "Who is singing?" & he replied "Bruce Cockburn, a Canadian folk-rock songwriter". I then asked what CD's to buy & he told me "In the Falling Dark" & "Humans". After school I bought them both & when I got home to play them in my room, my father knocked on the door "Is that you singing?"

Bruce Cockburn writes songs with such depth & spirit...even if a few songs might take 3 to 4 listens...most songs on "Lord of the Starfield" deal with praises to God (Lord of the Starfield & Festival of Friends) or life under the sea (Little Seahorse), while another song is about the fooliness of governments (Gavin's Woodpile). There is even a song written & sung in French (Vagabondage), & a very well crafted guitar instrumental (Water into Wine), which begins in a gentle flow & then ends with an up beat medley. "Lord of the Starfield" is a great place to start with Bruce Cockburn.

5 out of 5 stars Dancing Like His Head's Full Of Irish Fiddle Tunes...........2002-12-17

This is the one that hooked me on Bruce. I can still recall the time of day, May 15, 1976, driving from Toronto to Ottawa, absolutely brilliant day along the St Lawrence, when "Silver Wheels" came on CHUM FM. I pulled into Kingston and found a record store, bought the tape and from that point on felt heart and soul stirred by the music, lyrics and passion of this great, great national treasure of Canada.

That said, I've been dancing... as indicated above ever since. There are so many great, great tunes on this CD. Unquestionably, his creative engines were firing on all cylinders. His supporting musicians played like their lives depended on it, and the music rolls over you like the great Canadian landscape from Ottawa to the Northwest Territories. "Lord of the Starfields", "Vagabondage", "Gavin's Woodpile" and of course "Silver Wheels" are sheer genius, any one of which would be a landmark acheivement for any songwriter worth his salt. The instrumentals crack with finesse and extraordinary dexterity and intelligence.
This is as brilliant a remastering of an album that set sonic integrity standards when it was released. The additional material complements as well as compliments what the original sequence was. Most of this CD points to directions Bruce would pick up later in life, and so you will find here the genesis of many of his passions.
I have written before that Cockburn's never written a rum track on any disc. And so, when you come across a CD like this one or DANCING IN THE DRAGON'S JAWS or CIRCLES IN THE STREAM or BREAKFAST IN NEW ORLEANS, or STEALING FIRE or so many others, the overwhelming power and commitment to his craft tends to blow you out past Newfoundland. His creative process was underway from his eponymous debut through SALT, SUN and TIME and when it got here, Bruce was in absolutely full command of his deeply affecting powers. The whole thing picked up steam on this valley road and ideas seemed to rear up and explode, and well, you get the point. Get this. It is a truly remarkable CD.

Album Description

Percy Faith was the master of distilling the best of melodies and in this collection from 1958, Percy rescues us from the images that Victor Herbert melodies tend to evoke - the operetta, and the "erstwhile lady singing (belting out?) Herbert tunes at the piano." With this in mind, Percy's early stereo spectacular brings us the best of the Victor Herbert tunes - with the grand voice of the orchestra to bring out the beauty of each song - twenty-three Victor Herbert songs in this collection! (Bill Halvorsen)

Album Description

Full Title - The Columbia Album Of Victor Herbert/And His Orchestra. Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These 2 albums on 1 CD were originally released in 1958. 23 tracks. 2003 Collectables reissue.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Inauthentic Herbert/authentic Percy Faith.......2006-09-03

If you love the Percy Faith orchestral style, you will certainly
enjoy this typical example. The disc is full and the selections are numerous and varied, including characteristic pieces, operetta
excerpts, and even a couple of excerpts from one of Herbert's
grand operas.
BUT - if you're primarily interested in the music of Victor Herbert, then the advice has to be to avoid this seemingly tempting item. The combination of anachronistic arrangements, altered harmonies, and orchestrations foreign to anything Herbert would have imagined or countenanced ends by falsifying the charm and character of Herbert's music. In essence it's more like "1950's Fantasies Loosely Based on Certain Herbert Themes."

1 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2006-08-14

This is a very poor rendering of the music of Victor Herbert. I am very disappointed in it and would not have ordered it if I realized that there were no vocals.

5 out of 5 stars "music giants come together ~ Herbert & Faith".......2004-02-09

Now we have something that only Percy Faith could tackle "The Columbia Album of Victor Herbert", composer Victor Herbert has all the elements that Mr. Faith was looking for, and what a workout the award winning Percy Faith Orchestra has in store for them, look at the result...pure satisfaction and then some ~ "TOYLAND" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Percy's arrangement comes from the heart and weaves a magic spell over the listener ~ "MARCH OF THE TOYS", once again the signature arrangement comes to the surface of each cue that Mr. Faith records, very stimulating performance ~ listen to this cue and visualize the toys coming to life ~ "A KISS IN THE DARK" and "KISS ME AGAIN", once again the magic prevails with soft and sweeping strings, The Percy Faith Touch comes to the forefront ~ and Percy was always there to record the music whenever the time presented itself, and it is here and now.

Two great giants in the music world Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and Percy Faith (1908-1976), brought together by Columbia Records and originally released in 1958 (C2S-801), received wonderful reviews from the music critics. This is an historic event for Faith fans, a double LP that has all the ingredients is now released on one single compact disc ~ with all the sonic clarity you could ask for.

Great job to all who were involved in bringing this to listeners of fine music ~ very impressive with all original liner notes and recording cues intact. This has to be in the top five of Faith's re-issues, keep them coming, cause there is an audience out there crying and craving more of the same...gotta love it!

Total Time: 73:46 on 23 Tracks ~ Collectables 7565 ~ (9/16/2003)

5 out of 5 stars Herbert in good hands with Faith renditions.......2003-10-08

Percy Faith, the easy listening music arranger and conductor, pays homage to composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and in doing so offers us a remarkable recording of Herbert's oft-forgotten music. Faith interprets Herbert's music with his signature lush strings and sound orchestral arrangements that provide a light buoyancy to the compositions. Especially good are Indian Summer, Spanish Serenade and Gypsy Love Song. But all tracks are impressive and offer good testimony to Herbert's compositions and Faith's tuneful arranging. This is one of the better Faith re-releases from Collectables to date.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection!.......2001-10-06

This is the second Dave Mallett CD that I've added to my collection. After hearing "This Town," released in 1993, I had my hopes up for something fantastic when this one hit the shelves. I wasn't disappointed! This crafty songwriter has done it again. The theme of sadness, loss, and lonliness runs the duration of the CD. It almost seems like Mallett was in a dark place himself, when he wrote these songs; the theme matches the title, "...In The Falling Dark." "It Wasn't Supposed To Be Like That," co-written with Hal Ketchum, is a beautiful ballad and probably one of the best songs on the CD. Other cuts worth noting are "Closer To Truth," "That Was The One," "Here We Go," "Come Out Of The Blue," and "Daddy's Oldsmobile," also co-written by Hal Ketchum. Also, the lyrics are included on the insert. Buy it before it's too late!!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Writing + Performing.......2000-03-03

Dave Mallett first came to my attention as a writer on a John Denver album with the song "Ballad of St Anne's Reel". I know why Denver (quite a songwriter in his own right) would tap the talents of an outside source like Mallett. "In The Falling Dark" came into my life just when I needed it's warm inspiration and perspective on life. All the songs are good, especially outstanding are "Closer to Truth" (a truly haunting and meaning-filled song which could have been written about 9/11--was actually written sveral years earlier) and "Hungry for Love"--about the universal and overlooked need for love by all. Thanks David, you remind us that there's always "hope for one and all."

5 out of 5 stars Dave Mallett has done it again!!!.......1998-07-09

I can't stop loving Mallett's music!!! This album again contains some masterpieces. It's full of beautiful melodies, poetic & thinkful songtexts and Malletts warm bariton voice. Listen to the lyrics of "Hungry for love" and "Daddy's Oldsmobile"!!! These are my favorite songs. What's more to be said is that he co-wrote "Daddy's Oldsmobile" and "It wasn't supposed to be like this" with Hal Ketchum.

      Album Description

The charismatic mezzo-soprano, Jean Stilwell, is one of Canada's most versatile artists - one who has that rare ability to light up any stage on which she performs. In addition to her extensive recital, concert and operatic performances, Stilwell has also garnered rave reviews for her smoldering approach to cabaret music, including the songs of William Bolcom and Benjamin Britten, Kurt Weill and Arnold Schoenberg, to those made famous by Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, Zara Leander and Lotte Lenya. Her recording of French mélodies and cabaret, Les Chemins de l'amour, was heralded by the press, making the late Toronto music critic Urjo Kareda's list of the "Best Recordings of the Year 1999".

      5 out of 5 stars A bit of everything.......2002-04-13

This is possibly Bruce Cockburn's best album -- folks who really love _The Charity of Night_ might enjoy hunting down this one. There are a lot of different moods here, within a mellow acoustic folk-jazz medium. Everything flows into one attitude. "Lord of the starfields," "I'm gonna fly some day," and "festival of friends" are Christian mysticism, "vagabondage" is sung in French, "in the falling dark" and "gavin's woodpile" are brooding tunes with great poetic lyrics. "Little seahorse" is a quaint love song. All of the instrumentals are innocuous. "Giftbearer" has a waterfall sound to it. The best song on this album is a sung travel poem, "silver wheels". A classic.

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual and worldly music ahead of it's time.......2002-01-22

When I listen to this album, it strikes me that Bruce was certainly ahead of his time in bringing a more worldy and earthy sound to us in his work.

This shows up in the albums best songs, in particular, Giftbearer. But, also in Lord of the Starfields, a fantastic spiritual song, and Silver Wheels. The lyrics in Silver Wheels are superb pure poetry. Vagabondage is a song with a lot of character, and I'm Gonna Fly Someday is a song you'll want to listen to over and over again. These songs form the heart of the album.

Others, such as Gavin's Woodpile, In The Falling Dark and Water Into Wine are just ok. They seem more like fillers to me. Little Seahorse is a fun little song, but seems out of place. And Festival of Friends is just a pure lame song - I wonder if it was written about Hamilton's Festival of Friends ?

On the strength of the good songs that make up the heart of this album, it is a great purchase. It's time this album and other solid Bruce albums were digitally remastered !

3 out of 5 stars Literate, Relaxing and Laid Back.......2000-09-27

During the past three decades, Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn has undergone several stylistic progressions from Christian Folkie to Rocker. In The Falling Dark, originally released in 1976, is a work of literate folk music. The Christian overtones are here, but Bruce's devotion is more mystical rather than secular.

The album opens with the acoustic and melodic `Lord Of The Starfields.' Bruce's poetry is in top form: "Oh Love that fires the sun/Keep me burning." The composition includes a peculiar fluttering in the background which sounds like the blades of a helicopter, but on close listening, it's actually a set of bongos. `Little Seahorse' is light and whimsical with a gently dancing flute. `Silver Wheels' (track six) is the first song featuring a full band. A simple acoustic guitar line pushes the hypnotic song forward, Bruce's voice seems far in the distance, and the song includes an improvised "jazz" trumpet. Trumpets again introduce the vocals harmonies of `I'm Gonna Fly Someday.' The flute (or is it a piccolo) prances lightly in and around the song's lovely melody. Although melancholy, the final track (Festival Of Friends) is lyrically inspiring.

No particular song from In The Falling Dark jumps out of the speakers and forcefully grabs my attention: that's one of the key reasons I enjoy the album. Like Bruce's masterful guitar work, everything is understated and balanced - from the subtle trumpet notes to the unconventional stand-up bass playing. Overall, the album is relaxing and laid back, and Bruce's poetry is intelligent and memorable.

      5 out of 5 stars a beautiful album.......1999-10-10

I highly recommend this album to anyone who appreciates high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Bruce Cockburn music!.......1998-07-21

Though this album has been around a while and Bruce Cockburn has many albums in his discography, this is a fine representation of his earlier work. An artist of conscience and compassion, this album demonstrates the wide scope of his thought and heart...

Beautiful music, beautiful voice-but unfortunately mismatched, and poorly recorded- "opera" style of delivery detracts from enjoyment- and recording poor quality in that it alternately blares out and drops to inaudible- second CD really poor- looks like one thrown in for good measure.
I am not musically trained nor a critic but I have loved these songs for many years and this was a disappointment.

It is hard to imagine anything more precious and cloying than this collection of popular songs sung by a person whose interpretations so infect her vocal techniques as to come out totally laughable. One could use this as a party record except that after a few songs one has to stop listening out of boredom and anger....
