Superbly packaged and lovingly annotated, the five-disc Arhoolie Records 40th Anniversary Collection distills four decades of musical passion into six hours of highlights. The passion is that of Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz, a German immigrant and former California schoolteacher whose label reflects a devotion to American roots music at its most vital and varied. Southern bluesmen Mance Lipscomb and Fred McDowell, Louisiana zydeco kingpin Clifton Chenier, and Tex-Mex conjunto accordionist Flaco Jimenez are just a few of the regional mainstays to achieve national renown through Arhoolie, and all of them are represented here.

The spirited diversity of the 105 selections (including 13 available on CD for the first time) finds the label extending its reach from string-band country (Hackberry Ramblers) to hard-driving jazz (Jerry Hahn Quintet) to New Orleans brass bands to more recent forays into "sacred steel," featuring gospel music with pedal-steel guitar. Where so many folk preservations might as well be embalming musical relics, Arhoolie champions "vernacular music": music that retains a strong, integral connection to its community and gets people clapping, stomping, and dancing. Throughout the set, the immediacy of the performances transcends trendiness or timeliness, showing how America sounds beyond the plasticity of popular culture. --Don McLeese

    5 out of 5 stars You'll enjoy this journey!.......2005-01-18

If you're a fan of living/breathing folk music, not whitebread I-gave-my-love-a-cherry acoustic music, but vibrant music from backwoods, churches and back alley sub-cultures obscured and ignored by the modern world, then this collection is for you.

In the early 80's I became a big fan of Clifton Chenier, the King of Zydeco. Collecting his records was the first time I encountered the Arhoolie label. I began to see that other artists I enjoyed were also on the label Beasoleil, Fred McDowell, Mance Lipscomb and others. It got to where I'd buy records just because of that red and black label. Even if I'd never heard of the artist I could always bank on the record being interesting and that is all because of Chris Strachwitz. He's the owner but he's also the guy out there beating the bushes to find this stuff and most of the music collected here he recorded himself in the field.

Arhoolie has managed to remain an independent record label which is saying something in this day and age and that independence keeps it vital. There is a recording in this collection by a street artist name Bongo Joe, whose music is essentially Joe improvising lyrics while beating out a rythm on a metal 50 gal. oil drum. Everytime I hear this track I smile because it's so wild and also because I know this guy would be out in the street doing this whether someone recorded him or not. Thank god someone did and they did it because they saw the intrinsic value in this mans art, not the chance to make a million dollars.

The booklet that accompanies the collection is full of wonderful photos, history and stories. Mr. Strachwitz shares his field recording technique of having one microphone in the center with the artists gathered around it which lends these recordings a comfortable charm. I could not agree more with the reviewer who said this collection is a nice companion to the Anthology of American Folk Music, it provides a nice bookend for that hallowed collection. I started out by saying this is living/breathing folk music. I did not mean to infer that these artists are still alive (though some are), rather that the sub-cultures that spawned these artists are still out there. We should all take comfort in that.

5 out of 5 stars Great set and great value for money.......2002-01-27

This is a truly wondrful set that works on every level.

Beautifully presented with a very informative book and five high quality CD's.

The sound quality is superb as are all the production values.

The mixture of world music, old-time music and American regional sounds, as repesented in the output of Arhoolie Records, works extremely well here.

I found my self playing all 5 CD's one after the other without strain and enjoying them all.

Once having heard many of the artists for te first time the search wil then commence for solo albums if they exist, and they probably do in most cases.

If this were a "Bear Family" set there would certainly be another $... on the askng price.

If you are already a fan of this type of musci or are looking to explore it furter this really is THE set to buy as a starting point.

All the tracks are strong and there is no "padding" at all.

Combine this with a quite outstanding book giving full details on the artists and the history of Arhoolie and this is a set that will be cherished for years to come and played with great regularity.

    Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Obscurities.......2001-10-18

I wasn't sure how I was going to like this box set when I bought it because I had never heard of most of the artists. When I first obtained it, I listened through once then put it on the shelf. On a recent road trip, I decided to put all 5 CDs in my CD changer to listen to in sequence and lemme tell you, am I ever glad to have done so.
The Journey of Chris Strachwitz is a musical journey through parts of America most of us never see or hear. There is Cajun, Zydeco, country, Tejano, blues, gospel and more. There is not the polished, overproduced kind of music one often hears on the radio, but rather the raw authenticity of music being played straight from the heart. Most of these musicians have made very little money in the business and are forced to do other work in order to make ends meet. Its a shame because just the small sampling here shows me that most of these artists have more talent than an army of top-40 schlocksters like Backstreet Boys and Madonna.
I am not equally enthusiastic about every song, but I was introduced to many performers from whom I want to hear more. Its hard to choose favorites, but I was impressed with Mance Lipscomb, the Reverend Louis Overstreet, Lydia Mendoza, Valerio Longoria, Omar Sharriff, Chatuye, The Campbell Brothers, and Aubrey Ghent in addition to more familiar performers like Clifton Chenier, Charlie Musselwhite, and any of the Jimenez clan. The worst song on the album is more pleasurable listening than most of the vapid pap served up on commercial radio.
With the CDs comes an informative booklet, filled with photos and stories of the performers and the sometimes serendipitous ways that Strachwitz hooked up with them.
If your musical taste runs the gamut, you should like this fairly priced box set. Chris Strachwitz did American music a tremendous turn when he set out to capture the sound of the folk before it was lost to us forever. I give this treasury of obscurities my heartiest recommendation. You won't be sorry you bought this!

    5 out of 5 stars a real summer journey.......2001-05-23

This is a really strong collection of hard to find artists that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of American music and culture. The blues is incredible. The cajun and zydeco numbers are unbeatable. Same is true of bluegrass, texmex, gospel. Where did rock get its start? Forget the name artists who've received all the accolades, these are the artists that influenced the names. The real deal - presented in its raw format as much as possible. Despite 5 CDs of material, weak tracks are hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must have.......2001-03-06

I could not agree more with the previous reviewer. This box set is perhaps the finest collection of American roots music, and much, much more, on the market today. Chris Strachwitz deserves our gratitude for bringing us forty years of top quality music, and for distilling his recordings down to this package, which could not possibly be better. Turn off your radio and turn on this goldmine of treasures from four decades of one man's undying love for the music that made this country great. Worth every penny, even at twice the price.

This album convinced me to be a fan of Cajun music. The music is very entertaining and upbeat--impossible to be a bad (or sad) mood when listening. All twelve of the songs are wonderful, with each one better than the one before!

Swamp Pop covers Cajun, Hillbilly, Zydeco, Rn'B and more. This is a must-own for anyone who enjoys such things.

    5 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-03-02

my aunt has this album and i borrowed it, only to burn it and never listen. then, a few months later i saw it and gave it a listen. i was expecting it to be good, but not this good. this album has a fantastic variety, great soul, honky tonk, country, and signature louisiana sounds. its like you're in the big easy. after a few listens, up to 4 of the songs were stuck in my head, it sounds stressful, but it was quite pleasant. if you want some flat out fun music and you're friends are "with it" i'm sure you'll enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonder of Joy from a sad man.......2007-05-06

I can't speak with any authority about this genre, like Kevin. I came to Harry Choates (wish I knew how to pronounce his name correctly!) via the wonderful novels of James Lee Burke, who's from New Iberia, LA, where Choates had a beloved presence during his tragically brief career.

I knew I loved cajun music, but had never heard the plaintive voice and magical fiddle of Harry, or anyone who so artfully mixed the cajun style with others current at the time. This set is truly a pleasure machine, and I agree that reading the included biography of Choates is worth the price alone. It contains all the songs of the other top rated Choates CD, and so much more. What's wonderful is that it covers not only his cajun music, but's also peppered with many tunes of varying styles--Tex-Mex, blues, jazz-influence. 'Missing You' on the 2nd CD brought tears to my eyes. And, a special section featuring his early work as a teen with Happy Fats and his Rayne-Bo Ramblers: the vocals (especially A Little High Chair) are heartrending.

I put it on in the car, open the windows and blast the volume up with a big grin on my face, tapping my toe on the accelerator and steering wheel, while any with open windows near me smile back. Buy it and smile! Buy it and dance while you do chores! Buy it and warm your heart and feel human.

The authenticity and soul of this music reminds me why I'm so dissatisfied with most modern music.

5 out of 5 stars Cajun Hillbilly Great Gets Recognized.......2002-11-15

Harry Choates was a Cajun fiddler who had a major country crossover hit with his version of "Jole Blon." Primarily thought of as a Cajun fiddler, Choates drank deeply from western swing and jazz traditions, just listen to his superb performance of "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town." (This title was finally reissued on CD with this set.) The excellent Bear Family compilation pulls together Choates' Gold Star recordings and includes an extensive, newly researched biography--worth the price of the set alone. This is a wonderful reissue, now let's finish the job by reissuing his recordings on the Macy's label. "Devil in the Bayou" belongs in every Cajun, Country, and fiddle collection.

From its humble beginnings in 1970 as a free concert for a few hundred locals, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has grown into one of the world's largest music gatherings, each spring drawing hundreds of thousands from all over the world. Jazzfest, as it's known locally, has both stimulated and reflected out-of-state interest in Louisiana music. It was once a rarity for Cajun, zydeco and second-line R&B acts to ever leave the state; now dozens of them make the circuit of baby-boomer, roots-music dance clubs. Most of that exponential growth has occurred in the last 10 years, and Rounder Records, which made a major commitment to Louisiana music in the mid-'80s, has reaped the benefit of the scene's growing popularity. Here the Boston indie label celebrates its own prescience with a two-CD anthology. Despite the title, most of the tracks were recorded within the last 10 years, but they cover a lot of ground--from the old-fashioned brothel piano of Tuts Washington to the funky brass arrangements of the Rebirth Brass Band, from the ancient Cajun song styles of David Doucet to the hip-hop-influenced zydeco of L'il Brian and the Zydeco Travelers. The first CD or "City Disc" focuses on 14 New Orleans artists, ranging from such late piano masters as Champion Jack Dupree and James Booker to such smooth soul crooners as Dalton Reed and Chuck Carbo. The second CD or "Country Disc" presents 18 Cajun and zydeco acts from French Louisiana, including such well known names as D.L. Menard and Buckwheat Zydeco as well as such emerging talents as Geno Delafose and Bruce Daigrepont. Holding the set together is the slippery sense of syncopation most Louisianans seem to be born with. Whether that pelvic pulse is dictated by fiddle or tuba, button accordion or upright piano, the infectious rhythms could only have come from that particular stretch of the Gulf Coast.--Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars 25 Years of Louisiana Music on Rounder Records.......2005-01-31

It may seem odd, but Massachusetts-based Rounder Records has become the pre-eminent label recording the music of Louisiana. From such classic New Orleans artists as Professor Longhair, Johnny Adams and Irma Thomas, to Cajun stalwarts D.L. Menard, Bruce Daigrepont and Steve Riley, to the Kings of Zydeco, Boozoo Chavis and Beau Jocque, Rounder is dedicated to playing its part in continuing this rich tradition of joyous and unique music. This budget priced double CD features these artists, as well as Marcia Bell, Champion Jack Dupree, James Booker, The Balfa Brothers, Jimmy C. Newman, Buckwheat Zydeco, Beausoleil and others, making this one of the finest and most comprehensive colllections of Louisiana music available.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best deals you will find.......2000-07-26

While label compilations often come across as self-serving and/or limited, this nifty collection avoids that pitfall. By including both a New Orleans blues collection and a Zydeco/Cajun collection, "Louisiana Spice" manages to give an adequate picture of the various modern Blues and Cajun styles that you will find throughout Louisiana. In fact, if you are looking at the full equation of variety + quality in Louisiana music, you're not going to find many better collections out there. Better ones definitely exist, but factor in price and it becomes apparent that this is one of the best deals on any type music you will ever find.

"Louisian Spice" is very professionally put together. Most 2-CD-for-the-price-of-1-real-cheap-CD deals (such as those you find in the budget bins of Musiclands and Camelots) will usually give you a *very* inadequate picture of that artist's or genre's music, but it is excusable because the price is right. With "Louisiana Spice," the price is right and so is the quality--a priceless combination in budget packages.

The main reason I picked up this CD was because of Marcia Ball's "That's Enough of that Stuff" and the Rebirth & Wild Magnolia duet performance of "Shoo-Fly"--two of the most energetic performances ever put on record. I've always wanted to get both of the original albums those numbers appear on just for those songs alone, but when I saw them together on the same album, plus an excellent array of classic Louisiana artists such as James Booker, Tuts Washington, and Johnny Adams, the decision of whether or not to buy became very easy. I consider "That's Enough. . ." and "Shoo-fly" to be two of the major peaks in the modern era of New Orleans music (as do many other fans). Thus, as they say, "no music collection is complete without them."

While I've always enjoyed Cajun and Zydeco music, I do not enjoy it enough to buy CDs from either genre (at least no song or album has caught my ear enough *yet*). However, as a huge fan of Louisiana music and everything that has come out of it and into it, I recognized that this left a huge hole in my collection. This album presented the perfect opportunity to fill that hole, all the while buying the album principly for other reasons. In other words, the second album serves as an excellent bonus for my musical tastes. Perhaps there are many others out there who can relate to this idea.

Both newcomers to Louisiana music and long-time connoisseurs alike should be more than satisfied with this CD. As it did with me, it offers the opportunity to fill many holes in your own collections, as well as those that you did not even know you were missing. Word of caution: while this double CD will only cost you around 10 bucks, the paths to which it leads you will undoubtedly cost you more money in the future. That, in the end, is the litmus test for all music compilations.

Johnny Nicholas is a genius of the blues and R&B. Too bad his output, typically on small labels, is so sparse. Find "Too Many Bad Habits" on Blind Pig records as an example. He covers a variety of R&B genres here: Texas, New Orleans, hard blues, to great effect, with guest stops by Marcia Ball, Kaz Kazanoff and other stalwarts. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Swampy western swing... classic!.......2003-01-04

Catchy, raw backwoods fiddle music from the Louisiana bayou... These late-'40s recordings are an interesting mix of cajun, straight old-timey fiddle music and honky-tonk heavy western swing tunes. A veteran of the Louisiana swamp scene, by the postwar years, Choates seemed ready to try just about any style of music and see what would stick -- fortunately, he was pretty darn good at any style he played, and this album is lots of fun from start to finish. The CD version includes ten extra tracks (although his big hit version of "Jole Blon" still is absent...) Cool stuff, a little off the beaten track.

5 out of 5 stars A dream CD for fiddle, Cajun, Western-Swing & Country fans.......1998-12-25

This CD is as good as anyone could ever hope for, if you are a fan of the dynamic fusion of Cajun, Western-Swing and Country Music that took hold in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas in the years immediately following World War II. Personified here by fiddler extraordinaire Harry Choates, a small problem attendant to enjoying this pulsating collection of 26 recordings (from 1946-1950) is deciding whether you want to just listen or dance.

Harry Choates was the embodiment of the stereotypical hard living musician who, by many accounts, lived to play music. Born in Rayne, LA in 1922 he was performing regularly by the late `30's, having worked with Leo Soileau's Aces and a musician who is prominently heard on this CD: steel guitarist Julius "Papa Cairo" Lamperez. His first recordings are generally considered to have been done with another Cajun legend, Happy Fats and the Rayne-Bo Ramblers in Dallas in 1940.

Harry Choates position in musical history came in 1946 with his recording of the Cajun Classic, "Jolie Blon." The tune was already well known in Cajun music, but Choates rendition was a commercial sensation. Unfortunately, Choates sold the rights to the recording for $50 and a fifth of whiskey when the release became a hot. Unfortunately, also, the tune is not on this CD (but don't let this fact stop you from buying it).

There are many standouts here, beginning with the first cut, "Allons a Lafayette." Choates alternates between French and English on the vocals on "Poor Hobo;" and Papa Cairo's short break on steel illustrates how nicely his playing compliments Choates' fiddling. But this is just a prelude to the killer combination on "Devil In The Bayou" and "Harry Choates Blues." And forget trying to just listen when you hear "Hackberry Hop." I'm rather partial to Choates' version of the well known "Te Petite," and "It Won't Be Long." Space, not quality, is the reason other selections aren't noted.

      5 out of 5 stars A decent true obscurity..........2006-08-11

30+ years on since it's release, this album's existence was scant. Had I not seen it pictured on an Atlantic Records dust sleeve I would never have known it was ever released. When listening to this album you must bear in mind that it's quite different from Doug's albums (Doug produced this one by the way). It's a solid album, he has a very soulful voice and the musicians (which includes Charlie Daniels) really know their game. Buy this album quick, before it disappears again!
