This original cast recording of Kander & Ebb's Cabaret is tough to beat: Jill Haworth as Sally Bowles, Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies, and Lotte Lenya as Fraulein Schneider all turn in classic performances that set a high-water mark for future reinterpretations. Lenya's "So What?" and "It Couldn't Please Me More" hark back to the dark cabaret work composed by her late husband, Kurt Weill, while other tunes ("Telephone Song," "Two Ladies") are much more upbeat. One of the best surprises found on this version--featuring liner notes by author Ken Mandelbaum--are the four previously unreleased (and fascinating) Kander & Ebb demo cuts and four brief intros for songs. The eight rarities are all low-fidelity but highlight the songwriting process of the pair nicely. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
a great original cast recording...............2007-05-14
I have never seen the film version of CABARET, nor the stage version. Yet, when I first heard the vinyl version of this original cast recording, I felt like I was in the audience, watching the creepy Master of Ceremonies (the wonderful and understatedly sleezy Joel Grey), beautiful British Sally Bowles (Jill Haworth), and her American boyfriend, Cliff (Bert Convy), from my seat on at mezzanine level, with a pair of field glasses on opening night!
The plot of CABARET is a bit elaborate, so, I won't go into details, here. What's more, giving away too much plot will ruin your experience. This is a musical that you just have to experience for yourself. Set during the height of Nazi occupation, the cabaret is the one venue people go to escape war and pain. The sleezy underworld of the cabaret runs rampant with sexual innuendo, dancing girls and hedonism. The Master of Ceremonies (Grey) presents sexy dancers, a dancing gorilla and welcome everyone to the venue in three languages ("Wilkommen"). Due to fate, he encounters Sally Bowles (Jill Haworth), a free spirited performer who falls in love with Cliff, an American (Burt Convey).
Okay, no more plot. I will tell you this. The music is catchy, wickedly bawdy and full of entendre. Written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, it examines the ins and outs of cultural clash, identity and human violence. The instrumental is deceptively peppy, as if to conceal a reality that the performers are desperately trying to hide. I reccomend this as an engrossing period piece, as well as a great example of the musical theater repertoire.
A Classic.......2006-07-22
If you want to hear Cabaret well sung, get the film soundtrack. Liza Minelli is sublime, and adapting the role of Sally Bowles to suit her talents was a stroke of genius, and part of the reason why so many consider the movie (arguably) a masterpiece.
If you want to hear it performed in the true spirit in which it was written, get the OBC. Not for Jill Hayworth as Sally, or even Joel Grey as the Emcee, both are excellent, but get it for Lotte Lenya as Frau Schneider. Her throaty, raspy, accented singing style is totally captivating. Her duets with Jack Gilford (also perfectly cast in the best role of his long career) are charming and bittersweet. But the real reason, and I think the core to Cabarets story, is the song, What Would You Do? It is gut wrenching, her delivery is full of pain, yearning and bewilderment. She asks the question that I'm sure thousands of Germans asked, pre-WWII, in the event of having to sacrifice or face painful consequences. No easy or pleasant answer, and what Cabaret is really about, the sacrifices each character must make, and the choices they have to choose.
A LANDMARK IN THE HISTORY OF MODERN MUSICALS.......2006-06-29
This is one of those musicals that you may perfectly describe as a landmark in the History of Musicals. It helps to define the transitional period between the Golden Age of the fifties and the musicals that came right after. Impossible to classify it as a musical comedy, since it deals with most dramatic issues, as WEST SIDE STORY did it before. It's rough, dramatic, violent staff but so wonderfully conceived! If you have the movie soundtrack (who doesn't?) and you think that's it, you're wrong. The musical play differs a great deal from the movie, which was "remodelled" to stress Liza Minelli's talent. She certainly did a wonderful job in the excellent movie adaptation, but the musical play contains some songs that were cut out or replaced to fit Miss Minelli's leading performance. Even the story line suffered some changes once translated into the silver screen. Both the movie and the play are excellent, but different. So, if you have the movie soundtrack, get this one as well, and you'll be surprised to find some different material from the movie recording.
The Original "Cabaret".......2005-07-15
While the 1972 movie starring Liza Minnelli is probably the most well-known version of "Cabaret", this 1966 Broadway version is where it all started.
Led by a talented cast, including Jill Haworth (Sally Bowles), Lotte Lenya (Fraulein Schneider), and the incredible Joel Grey (Master Of Ceremonies), this Kander & Ebb musical is excellent and contains a classic score.
Best tracks include:
Wilkommen (Mr. Grey's signature song)
Two Ladies
It Couldn't Please Me More
Tomorrow Belongs To Me
The Money Song
Married
If You Could See Her
Cabaret
One should note, however, that two classic "Sally Bowles" songs were added for the movie: "Mein Herr" & "Maybe This Time".
This is a great cd! ... but if you want a version that includes these songs, try the movie soundtrack or the 1999 Revival Cast (which also includes "I Don't Care Much").
Im Cabaret, Au Cabaret, To Cabaret.......2004-06-06
That chilling introductory drumroll and cymbal crash, followed by the equally chilling sound of Joel Grey's voice singing "Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome," is enough to tell the listener that CABARET is an exceptional show and that its original cast recording is exceptional, too. In CABARET, realistic book scenes are interspersed with floor show-style sequences that comment on the action. The result is a moving, disturbing take on the rise of the Nazis in 1930's Berlin. There is no question that the librettist/composer/ lyricist team of Joe Masteroff, John Kander, and Fred Ebb - aided by the innovative staging of director Harold Prince - created a revolutionary musical in CABARET. The recording is justly dominated by Grey's epicene Master of Ceremonies, while Bert Convy and Jill Haworth are in wonderful voice as the two lovers (just listen to Convy's gloriously sung "Why Should I Wake Up?"). However, the "secondary couple" - the legendary Lotte Lenya as Fraulein Schneider and Jack Gilford as her Jewish suitor, Herr Schultz - are the stars here. Lenya (aided by two character-defining solos, "So What?" and "What Would You Do?") gives a vivid characterization of the aging landlady whose engagement to Schultz is doomed, while Gilford sings his part of the duet "Married" with affecting simplicity and is adorably droll in the comic narrative "Meeskite." The orchestral playing is spectacular and the digitally remastered sound equally so. And included as one of eight bonus tracks on this reissue is Kander and Ebb's haunting rendition of "I Don't Care Much," a song cut from the original production (but restored in the recent revival). This has quickly become one of my favorite original Broadway cast recordings.

Customer Reviews:
A golden collection of guitar work. .......2007-06-14
This album is quite the find for any fan of Renbourn or Jansch, or folk guitar in general. It is also a great album to listen to for aspiring guitarists, as well as established guitarists.
There are aspects of this album that some will not enjoy, but the grand guitar playing seems to overshadow any of that.
terrific folk album from 1966........2007-03-26
bert jansch and john renbourn are two of the finest folk guitarists on record. this is a terrific album from 1966, and is mostly instrumental, focusing on their incredible guitarpicking prowess. there are a few jansch vocals, which is fine, because mr jansch has an easy to like voice, somewhere in the neighborhood of donovan's in sound. but it is really all that astonishing acoustic guitar work that makes this such a special release. great stuff.
Finger-style steel-guitar duels between Jansch and Renbourn.......2005-04-06
Much is made of the Yardbirds having had two lead guitarists of the caliber of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page at the same time, but while it is certainly true that you are talking a pair of great guitarists you cannot really point to a bunch of songs where they proved the point. On the other hand, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn provide an entire album showing what happens when two great steel-guitar players duel each other through a dozen tracks. One day I may be proficient enough to tell which speak is Jansch and which one is Renbourn, but I am not there yet and it is not a pressing concern with me. These two are masters of English folk music are that is all that really matters here.
If you had to identify a dominant music element on "Bert & John" it would be that they play the blues, sometimes subtle as in "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," and sometimes downright funky, as with "Tic-Tocative" and "Red's Favorite." Then they do songs that represent traditional English folk music, such as "Orland" and even modern folk music, like the happy little "Stepping Stones." Of course there are times when these styles seem to merge and blend, as is the case with the final track, "After the Dance," which puts the exclamation mark on this album. I am getting to appreciate Jansch's singing a bit more, but I still find the songs with lyrics (e.g., "Soho," "The Time Has Come") to be a bit intrusive because I just want to listen to these two guys play guitars. But even on those tracks there is still plenty of good guitar playing to listen to.
These two guitarists did most of their collaborative work together in the group Pentangle, but they first recorded together in 1965 on Jansch's second album, "It Don't Bother Me." In 1966 they recorded "Bert & John" together and Renbourn showed up for half the tracks on "Jack Orion," also recorded and released that same year. The two were roommates for a while and discovered that they were on the save wavelength when it came to guitar playing, which is why it might be nigh impossible to tell them apart of these songs. Clearly Pentangle was a result of these collaborations and the idea that they should take it to the next level and have other musicians added to the mix as well (vocalist Jacqui McShee and the rhythm section of Danny Thompson and Terry Cox). But the chief attraction remained the finger-style guitar playing of Bert and John.
Acoustic Masterpiece.......2004-11-07
British guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn have created an amazing musical landscape in this album, which is their only collaboration outside of their band Pentangle. Pentangle released six albums and enjoyed an unprecedented amount of success for an acoustic band. Bert Jansch is a virtuoso acoustic guitarist, famously revered by Neil Young and Jimmy Page, and John Renbourn is a virtuoso guitarist who is every bit as talented as Jansch. This album is produced in stereo - it sounds like there are really two guitarists sitting in your room - and it is very interesting to hear how the two seperate guitar parts interplay with each other. Overall, this is a very good album, and the conver of Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is worth the price of the album alone.
"At one point I was absolutely obsessed with Bert Jansch. When I first heard that LP (1965) I couldn't believe it. It was so far ahead of what everyone else was doing. No one in America could touch that." - Jimmy Page
"As much of a great guitar player as Jimi was, Bert Jansch is the same thing for acoustic guitar ... and my favourite." - Neil Young

With his crystalline articulation and extraordinary rhythmic prowess, John Williams ranks among the greatest solo voices the acoustic guitar has ever known. Now, with the joyous evocations of the African guitar tradition, Williams has hit upon his most emotionally satisfying crossover recital to date. Though both chief soloist and arranger, Williams nevertheless avoids shining the spotlight on his virtuosic skills--even his solo showcase, "Masagna," places greater emphasis on the tune's folkish incantations. He allows plenty of melodic space for the likes of steel-string player John Ethridge, while guiding listeners through the idiomatic flora and fauna of the pan-African experience: from the hornpipelike airs of Madagascar ("Mitopa") and kora-styled arpeggios of Mali ("Malinke Guitars") through to intimations of South African vocal traditions with a lovely children's chorus on the anthem of the African National Congress, "Nikosi Sikelel'I Africa." Simply expressive and deeply felt, Magic Box exudes a universal vibe that transcends borders and nationalities. --Chip Stern

perhaps my favourite jw.......2004-10-20
you gotta give it to john, he tries new stuff. and traditionalists may snob his later recordings, he has a gift of bringing life to guitar music.
the repertoire is different, cute and enjoyable.
my only critisicm is that the steel string solos get a bit monotonous in some of the pieces, but this is only because its not to my taste.
Perfect for a quiet, cloudy Sunday Morning.......2003-11-16
I have Magic Box playing and a small water sculpture flowing as I type this and the combination is just about perfect. I wouldn't call myself a sophisticated listener, even though I bought my first Segovia recording as a teenager in the early 1960s and, over the years, have accumulated quite a few recording by Segovia, Isbin, Williams, Parkening, and others. I never tire of listening to these superb guitarists playing Rodrigo and Bach and the other standards but, every once in a while, it is a pleasure to hear something a little out of the ordinary. It takes a special talent for a classically trained musician to handle pop or folk material with any success - as it does for pop/folk musicians to go the other way. Williams does it with ease.
Well intended, but..........2002-12-21
Being quite close to some of the sources for some of these pieces, I was both thrilled that they had been recognized, while a bit disappointed in the actual music treatment on Magic Box, which I found rather tepid and polite compared to the originals.
Paul-Bert Rahasimanana is much better known as Rossy, and he has many albums, most available on Amazon.com. Unfortunately, the links on this page don't tell you that. I have produced him, and toured and performed with him. He's an amazing musician. I hope people take the time to listen to his music.
Another source musician, Ralanto, is on the cover of an album called Moon and the Banana Tree, a 1995 compendium of acoustic guitar players in Madagascar which I produced for Shanachie. Omby, the piece John Williams covers, is on that album, and again, I hope people will take the time to seek that album out as well. Williams recently referred to it in an interview as a real eye-opener. I wish he could have heard Resting Place of the Mists, the companion CD which is already out of print.
Africa (including Madagascar, which is more properly associated with Indian Ocean culture than with Africa) has some of the most astounding guitar players on earth. Hearing an admittedly superb classical guitarist attempt to do that material justice requires that the listener either be unaware of the source, or willing to ignore it and judge the extremely European treatment he offers, which is dramatically inside the limits of the source. With all due respects, I truly hope it will draw some folks to listen to the real thing.
lovely.......2002-11-02
Classical guitarist extraordinaire John Williams has never been afraid to set out on little side-trips, away from the mainstream of the classical guitar literature. Beyond taking part on occasion in big orchestra-backed 'pops' excursions, he has regularly immersed himself in avant-garde, jazz, and even rock projects (for example the band 'Sky'). "The Magic Box" therefore does not really represent Williams doing anything unusual for him, but it does expand his repertoire within the world of folk and international music, in this case the traditional music of Africa. I find most of this material very attractive, but somehow a little less involving than when it is played on native instrumentation (perhaps simple beauties just cannot be improved upon...). Nevertheless, as always Williams executes each item in the program with grace and understanding, and with a level of gentleness and respect that one expects from a classical musician of his calibre. Call it a worthwhile experiment--though I'm not sure I would clamor for an encore.
Expanding the Horizon.......2002-07-18
In pursuing his goal of expanding guitar music beyond the traditional Spanish repertoire, Williams and friends have produced a very enjoyable collection of African style music. The blend of percussion, bass, and wind instruments gives it even more flavor. Particularly delightful is track 3, "Maki," with Williams playing beautiful tremolo and strumming on a bright sounding requinto. Several other pieces give off a similar tropical, mellow, and happy feeling. I'm eagerly anticipating Williams' next project and where he will take us.

Maybe "The Army Mule Song" isn't exactly Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Soliloquy," but Three Wishes for Jamie is still worth hearing for the voice of the great John Raitt (Carousel, The Pajama Game). It's a Brigadoon-ish fantasy about a Irishman granted three wishes by a fairy queen, and the songs by Ralph Blane (Meet Me in St. Louis) might remind you of other songs of the time: "My Heart's Darlin'" ("If I Loved You"), "Goin' on a Hayride" ("The Surrey with the Fringe on Top"), "It Must Be Spring" ("Spring Is Bustin' Out All Over"). The excellent liner notes explain the show's long trip to Broadway, where it ran for only 92 performances in 1952. Ann Jeffreys (Street Scene) co-stars as Jamie's American wife, Maeve Harrigan. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
BROADWAY LEGEND JOHN RAITT AT HIS PEAK . . . . . .......2006-08-23
"A charming and whimsical musical fantasy -- a bit like BRIGADOON, a bit like FINIAN'S RAINBOW, a bit like PAINT YOUR WAGON . . ." These words appear on the jacket of 1993 Broadway Angel release of THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE -- perhaps in an effort to entice Broadway cast album collectors to buy a show they probably never heard of.
After a fairly disastrous run at the Los Angeles and San Francisco Light Opera companies during the summer of 1951, the producers cancelled the projected Broadway opening, and THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE underwent extensive revisions. Abe Burrows (GUYS & DOLLS) was brought in to rework Charles O'Neal's book, and several of the leads were recast. Former opera soprano Anne Jeffreys replaced Marion Bell (BRIGADOON), and Hugh Wheeler took over the part of the matchmaker, Owen Roe Tavish, from Cecil Kellaway (LUCK OF THE IRISH). Fortunately, John Raitt - who had "been swept to stardom" in CAROUSEL (1945) and appeared (briefly) in MAGDALENA (1948) - was available, having turned down a secondary part in SOUTH PACIFIC.
It is John Raitt's magnificent singing that, for me, is the major reason for listening to THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE. "John Raitt possessed possibly the finest male voice on Broadway at that or any other time, a perfect instrument with the deft grace of a lyric baritone but with a tenor's ringing high notes." (from David Foil's excellent notes for the Broadway Angel CD) Ralph Blaine must have had Raitt in mind when he thought of writing the score, for they fit Raitt like the proverbial glove: "The Girl That I Court in My Mind," "My Heart's Darlin'" (sung with Ms. Jeffreys), "The Army Mule Song," "It's a Wishing World." Wheeler, Jeffreys, Peter Conlow and the rest of the ensemble are also first rate, and there's the added bonus of the incredible Charlotte Rae, even though "Love Has Nothing To Do with Looks" is embarrassingly misogynistic by today's standards.
So, I urge you to ignore the opening quote and to enjoy THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE for what it is: a charming show with a pleasant, if not memorable, score. With Broadway Legend John Raitt at his peak, and a supporting cast who are apparently having a wonderful time, JAMIE is fine listening, indeed. It's a wonder that more community theatre groups haven't staged the show. Perhaps, with this fresh recording, THREE WISHES FOR JAMIE will see new life on the stage.
Recommended.
(These comments are about the 1993 Broadway Angel recording. I have great confidence in DRG's remastering capability, which will undoubtedly improve the somewhat flat sound of the recording.)

Wedding Superiority!!.......2006-08-25
I purchased this product for my upcoming wedding in June of 2007. I absolutely love the product. I plan on using several selections from this cd in my wedding. My absolute favorite selection on this cd is the Wedding March. I just love the trumpets in the Wedding March. I would highly recommend this cd to anyone. This cd is first rate!! I can't wait to use it at my wedding.
Beautifully arranged and performed..........2000-07-20
This cd is great. I choose it when planning a wedding for a client and was pleased with the range of selections and the quality of the recording. The wedding march (wagner) features trumpet with organ, a nice alternative to the usually solo organ. An excellent choice for formal or classic weddings.

Customer Reviews:
Patrotic Saga.......2007-07-26
Altissimo! continues to try and improve its product range. Often with varying results, but at least we have an almost full length CD here with some decent liner notes. The 45 minute teasers of the past same to be gone. (For now at least) This collection of recordings, and I must emphasize that, as none of these are current tracks, spans a pretty wide range of US patriotic music. There's a bit more variety than usual here for an Altissmo! product, and a lot of music with signifiance to the US Military Academy at West Point. The sound quality is decent, and even though we have no idea when these recordings were made, the sound engineering has made them consistant in their quality. Altissmo! has learned a few tricks from their past efforts.
Over all not a bad CD with the usual heavy-hand of patrotic numbers, but with some nice choral selections by the band's choir, and a few good marches not offered on other Altissimo! albums for a change. Keep up the work Altissimo! One day you shall give us a real market quality product!!
Great Music.......2006-05-04
By the title, Altissimo's latest CD, "Duty, Honor, Country," would appear to be just another compilation of patriotic and military music. Upon listening, however, I quickly realized that this is far from just another patriotic CD. The CD features highly spirited music with excellent sound reproduction.
The music by the US Army Field Band and Chorus spans the time from the Civil War to modern day. While some of the songs are well known, there were several that I heard for the first time, most notably "Fantasia on the Army Blue." According to the liner notes, this number, written by Ira Hearshen, was commissioned by the Army Field Band on the occasion of the bicentennial of the U.S. Military Academy. The number depicts Hearshen's impression of West Point in music and is based on the Academy song "Army Blue."
One of the highlights of the CD is a very moving and heartfelt narration by General Norman Schwarzkopf called "Duty, Honor, Country." This adaptation of a speech by General of the Army Douglas McArthur is "right on" and brings a feeling of pride to those who hear it.
No collection of military or patriotic music is complete without Sousa's "The Stars and Striped Forever," and this collection is no exception. The march is the last selection on the CD, and I believe that the producer truly saved the best for last. I consider this version one of the most perfect I have ever heard. The seldom-heard words were sung by the Soldier's Chorus, and the piccolo part (which is what makes the march so great) was an absolute perfect performance.
All in all, this is a CD that should be added to the collection of every patriotic American.
