Heaven knows, the Scotsman born Donovan Leitch was ripe for ridicule, even when he was hitting the charts with regularity. He was the ultimate flower child, and his airier pronouncements made cynics want to tighten up those love beads around his neck. Listening to Troubadour, however, it's striking how versatile, melodic, and agreeable most of his material sounds decades after "Mellow Yellow" has faded into a jaundiced yellow. Clearly under the sway of Bob Dylan early on in his career, Donovan nevertheless was capable of directing his reverence into something as enchanting as "Catch the Wind." Amping up as the '60s progressed, he assembled a series of psychedelic-pop classics, including "Season of the Witch," the "Hey Jude"-like sing-along "Atlantis," and the uncharacteristically driving "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (the latter features three-quarters of what was to become Led Zeppelin providing stellar support). This two-disc anthology may be more Donovan than some desire, but the booklet, seven previously unreleased tracks, and expansive perspective it provides makes it a more-than-worthy overview for those who take their paisley folk-rock with a beatific smile. --Steven Stolder
Album Description

Customer Reviews:
Writer In The Sun.......2007-08-02
I am in complete agreement with most of the reviews already given. This is a great compilation, but it could have been better. Have you ever noticed that lesser-known Donovan songs can be given new life by framing them in a greatest hits package? They all sound like they belong. And yet, I could replace them with other songs, re-define the presentation, and it would still sound great. That is an incredible compliment to one of the most underrated singer-songwriters of our time. Donovan is one of those gifted performers who has an ability to write songs that touch each of us in a personal way. It is amazing to me that we could all put together our own "definitive collection" and the quality level would be as strong as ever. I know I have at least a dozen other favorites.
I am convinced that those who speak in negative terms about Donovan have only heard his "radio-friendly hits" of the sixties. There is so much more to discover and appreciate about this gifted artist, the likes the world will never see again. Donovan is a phenomenon. The deeper you dig, the greater the rewards. His songs are timeless. His entire song catalog compares favorably to The Beatles, who always recognized his creative talents. For me, Donovan will always be "The Fab One". Talented beyond his years, he was (and always will be) VERY SPECIAL. So, yes, I would recommend this two-disc collection. However, I would also ask that you NOT stop here. There is so much more for you to find and enjoy along the way.
The "Poor Cow" didn't have an opportunity to hear this!.......2007-07-26
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976 packs a tremendous punch with 44 tunes covering the folk, psychedelic, and esoteric periods. Excluding one glaring omission "Fat Angel", (The song would become legendary for Donovan's friends the Jefferson Airplane) this is a wonderful introduction to his music.
The tracks on first glance will remove any apprehension if a newcomer wants to take the plunge. For those that are only familiar with his hits and radio songs they will recognize 12 tunes immediately and at the very least will possess them in excellent quality.
What often happens when you are exposed to Donovan the entire scope of his work engulfs your interest and not only those that were played on the radio. "Codine" from the folk period is an example. The tune penned by Buffy Saint-Marie is exceptional here with crystal sound and Donovan's voice sounding emphatic as he strums the chords. "Museum" magically transports you to the psychedelic era with its vibrant sounds and catchy lyrics. "Super Lungs" has a terrific construction. Donovan's lyrics and a bit of the garage sounds of Americana make for a solid combination. "Cosmic Wheels" seems haunting in its arrangement. There is something captivating about the song.
As for the timeless tunes, they provide candy to the kid in the store. Endless treats of Donovan's creativity. The marvelous "Catch The Wind", "Universal Soldier", "Colours", and "Sunshine Superman" follow each other on the first CD. "Season Of The Witch" may take center stage. The tune has been universally applauded (Please see the Super Session album). "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" with the lyrics that resonate brilliance, is timeless. "Hurdy Gurdy Man" has found its way into every avenue of rock and roll. Progressive guitar-player Steve Hillage has done a breathtaking version. Deep Purple in the early days covered "Lalena." If you are old enough to remember the glory days of progressive radio, "Atlantis" is still every bit as stunning as the day it left the recording studio to go on the record store shelves. People tell stories, Donovan creates them.
After you've feasted on the material you can "Try for the Sun: The Journey of Donovan." That will give you the missing "Fat Angel" and numerous other tracks from the past.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Donovan Rules!!.......2007-05-22
If you remember this era in time, you will love this CD by one of the greatest folk artists from the sixties. This is a classic CD of the most beautiful music of that time and it still is beautiful today. I love Donovan!!
Definitive seems to be an overused word for "Epic" these days........2007-04-24
The compilers for this compilation didn't always pick the best non-hit tracks: Where's "Get thy Bearings" or "The River Song" from Hurdy Gurdy Man? Or, "Someone's Singing" from Wear Your Love Like Heaven? Or, amazingly not included: "Young Girl Blues" or "Hampstead Incident" from Mellow Yellow? I can probably add to this many more songs that are essential that weren't included .... "Bert's Blues" from Sunshine Superman, for example. Meanwhile, some of the songs included I've considered kind of un-definitive (e.g., "Writer In the Sun" or "Oh Gosh") -- also, although it was a hit, "Jennifer Juniper"'s kind of dull to me. Basically what I'm saying is this: Don't write off this musical Eastern mystic from the West too soon based merely on the selection choices on this compilation. He wrote and performed many good songs during these years -- not necessarily just these. Donovan deserves better than this compilation, imhumbleo -- but for the price offered, it's agreeable barter at least.
Really A Best of the Best Donovon.......2007-01-21
DONOVON emerged from the folk scene with Sunshine Superman, one of his best recordings. His music can be divided in two basic modes: the simplicity of valued human relationships & a new interpretation of mythic themes. The selected CD TROUPADOUR is the definitive collection of his early to more current work. SUNSHINE SUPERMAN includes such classic Donovan as Legend of a Girl Child Linda, Mellow Yellow, and Season of the Witch.

Ultimate music for every time of day and every mood.......2007-07-03
With 20 CDs in the collection, we have classical music for every mood and atime of day.
Would give 5 stars if sound quality where better.......2007-06-30
This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.
Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27
I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.
20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08
I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

36 minutes isn't enough .......2007-03-09
v. good music, but this CD should have been issued as a double with another LP-length recording. as it is, 36 minutes is just too short, especially on a format that can accommodate double that volume. more and more of the early jazz recordings are being issued as doubles on a single CD, and Mercury should do the same with JJ Cale, rather than slicing the cake so thinly.
This album saved my life...........2006-11-20
Stuck on the tarmac for fives hours in Abu Dubai. Then JJ tells me, Travelin' light- it's the only way to go. How true. How true.

I have to agree with an earlier review-this is a true desert island disc.my favorite jj album.sultry guitar and terrific songs.this is an underrated masterpiece."cherry" would make the price worth it."i'm a gypsy man""let me do it to you"not a wasted note on the whole thing.dont miss it!
desert island disc.......2004-06-16
J.J. Cale's Troubadour is a timeless recording of the highest caliber. As a music lover with an extensive portfolio of rock, blues, roots, soul, jazz, and classical, this is a CD that gets played regularly. Troubadour immediately connects with the listener and will prompt friends to inquire about the artist creating the cool, laid-back sound. This is one of those ten desert island discs to consider owning. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Good stuff..........2006-11-07
Having heard John Michael Talbot several times in concert over the last few years without owning any of his music, I became a fan and hunted down a few of his albums. Several of the others included some of his grander works, which include huge, sweeping orchestral and choral accompaniment. Though I appreciated that music, it was a far cry from the simple, acoustic stuff that he's been touring lately. This album more closely reflected my expectation.
John Michael Talbot has a calming effect that leaks out of his mouth and his fingers. Though he is obviously a very talented singer and guitar player, I appreciate the simplicity of his songs, which don't necessarily reflect his skills. Yet, this is not surprising, as the overall tenor of his music is that of worship, not ego-boosting.
As a Catholic musician, it is not surprising, and quite fascinating, to hear his musical treatment of Saint Francis's "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" canticle. And the entire album stays very reflective and contemplative.
In fact, I have given the album only 4 stars because it is almost too similar from track to track. If you are looking for musical diversity to exhibit the talents of Talbot, this album won't do it. But if you want some quality music by a Christian artist which can't help but bring a sense of serenity into your life, then this is a great place to start. I highly recommend it.
Troubadour worth five stars.......2005-06-15
Early on when John Michael Talbot joined the Franciscan monks I was a bit leary what might happen to his folky, coffeehouse-style music. But I was quite pleased when I heard his new "monastic" material. It was peaceful and gentle. His first releases (such as "Come to the Quiet") were more often single guitar and voice, very meditative. Quite refreshing.
"Troubadour Of The Great King" was the last Talbot album I bought. A double record at the time. Each "side" was especially beautiful as Talbot sang the Scripture verses that inspired Saint Francis of Assisi.
Gentle here (How Many And Wonderful), fun and somewhat boisterous there (Dance of Creation) it played differently from his first monastic material. Backup singers and orchestra accompany a number of the tracks.
Each side ended with a song that had a particular hook: side 1 with "Brother Sun/Sister Moon", side 2 with "Lilies of the Field", side 3 with "Let Us Adore The Lord" and side 4 with "Prayer Before The Cross" -- making a definitive statement that the side was complete.
This album is a must-have for anyone who enjoys John Michael Talbot's music.

Customer Reviews:
It's like listening to a catfight!.......2005-12-31
Ugh! I'm a big fan of Medieval music, but this has got to be some of the worst singing I've heard on such a CD. I'm guessing the lady was thinking of how, with modern rock music, often the singers will wander from the original melody and rythm a bit. But I stress here A BIT -- that doesn't mean these should be turned into pseudo-rap, or bad poetry. She totally just starts SCREAMING certain songs -- trying maybe to communicate the emotion?
Also (and I noticed in the liner notes that the group often does Middle Easter music) there was a sort of unpleasant Turkish/Indian style to the improv that I didn't like.
My final complaint is that it is a woman singing all these songs -- these songs were meant for men to sing. I don't think the lyrics were even altered to match.
pseudo-"medieval" jollity and little else.......2005-05-07
I'd be the first to admit that this recording of 12th and 13th century troubadour and trouvere songs is probably not aimed at listeners like myself. Yet whilst it would be difficult to deny the enthusiasm and aplomb with which these kitschy and Clemencic-inspired interpretations are delivered - with a kaleidoscopic array of instruments, including some [apparently indispensable] arabic ones - let's not overlook one VERY crucial point here: this recording does NOT EVEN ATTEMPT to present a faithful portrayal of this repertoire. In fact, it flies in the face of ALL recent musicology (see literature by Christopher Page, Elizabeth Aubrey etc...) which leaves little doubt that these songs were performed in one of only two ways: either one unaccompanied singer, or one singer accompanied by one (or two) instrument(s) - principally harp or vielle (although one wind instrument was sometimes used in lower style genres, like the dansa or pastourelle/pastorela). Additionally (!), only certain songs [Low Style - like track 2] were probably sung in a metric fashion, whereas High Style Chansons seem to have been rather more rhapsodic in delivery from start to finish, in complete contrast to how they are presented here [tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 12]...
But perhaps the performers (and listeners) don't believe this is relevant, or don't even care - after all, it's certainly rather "merrie". Just make sure you realise it's about as "medieval" as Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones's 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', or John Milius's 1981 film 'Conan the Barbarian' [starring Arnold Schwarzennegger].
Incidentally, if you're interested in hearing some academically and aesthetically more convincing recordings of this repertory, then the following are recommended:
1. 'Dante and the Troubadours', Sequentia/Bagby [DHM 05472 77 227 2]
2. 'Le fou sur le pont' - Bernatz de Vendadorn, Camerata Mediterranea/Cohen [Erato 4509-94B25-2]
3. 'The Spirits of England and France 2 - Songs of the Trouveres', Gothic Voices/Page [Hyperion CDA66773]
Simply outstanding.......2005-05-03
By far the best medieval music album in Naxos. This truly is a delight for senses. What I most enjoy is its wonderful attempt to recreate what a troubadour ambiance would have looked like: Maria Laffite's voice is unvaluable in that respect. Smart choice of songs and a particularly well-directed consort. It seems to me that the first feature that a troubadour album must offer, is for its scope to border on the literary value of the songs. "Music of the Troubadour" truly is a wonderful blend of medieval literature and music.
I TROVATORI.......2004-10-22
Absolutely fascinating, and it goes without saying not much like Verdi. This is an illuminating selection of the music of the troubadours, part vocal part instrumental, dating from the 12th to the 14th centuries. The artists are two groups of specialists, representing it seems slightly different traditions in the performance of the music, but with previous experience of collaborating. Particular care was apparently given to the selection of the vocalist, the final choice being Maria Lafitte of Canso Catalana, a specialist not only in the music of the period but also in the mediaeval romance languages - Provencal and some near congeners - of the poetry we find here.
The performances have a great deal of `presence' and what sounds to me like an air of authority. Maria Lafitte puts her heart and soul into all her contributions, and it should be taken as a compliment when I say that for me there was an odd suggestion of Piaf about her. With one exception, the mildly risqué # 9, all the vocal work is solo work. In # 9 I have to suppose the instrumentalists double as the choristers, since no other credits are given. The instrumental music (comprising about half of the disc) has not advanced at this stage beyond rudimentary harmony consisting of drone basses and percussion effects, but it is strikingly well recorded, particularly as regards parts of the percussion, and the liner note details the precise instruments used. What I would have liked to find in the note is rather more about the choice of instruments - is it specified in the scores or, as I suspect, did the specialist performers prescribe it themselves? As regards the vocal side, the liner note is completely admirable, pitching to an audience of newcomers to this music and packing in a lot of the historical background in a short space. There is also a brief section on the performers, the commentary is given in German and French as well as English, and there is a full text of the poems with English translation.
Oh wondrous Spanish early music!.......2003-09-04
This album is quite possibly my favorite of all that have been put forth by the Ensemble Unicorn. As always, they perform tight, with lots of wonderful improvisation, and the recording itself is excellent. Add in some very WONDERFUL Asturian vocals, and you've got the music that wound up being rewritten into the famed Cantigas de Santa Maria.

The newst album, Greatest Hits of A*Teens, is one of the best albums of A*Teens, maybe even first, I rate all songs 100/100 (100%), they are all so nice, I own all their albums, especially the previous one's, such as, The ABBA Generation, Teen Spirit (Bonus Tracks), Pop 'Til you Drop, New Arrival, and the Greatest Hits, They also have the versions that are sold in their home country Sweden, which i also have the versions, there are some differences though, and I have all their music DVD's, like The DVD Collection, Floorfiller, and Boung off the Ceiling(Upside Down), the New arrival is so similar to Pop 'Til You Drop, but some how different! Come on this CD is worth buying, I really enjoy it and highly recommend it! - Thank You!

Best in 10 years.......2003-07-07
Wisdom is a breath of fresh air. It was a trip back to the differing nuances of his Regathering and Heart of the Shepherd work. I love Wisdon. Swift to Hear, Slow to Answer is a beautiful, meditative peace with JMT's guitar riffs in the background adding a beautiful flair to a neo-classical piece. Just a great work that will be way too underappreciated.
A Great New CD!.......2002-04-14
I was blessed to receive this CD as pre-release in last May when I saw John Michael Talbot at a bookseller's convention. Like most of his works, this too is quite mellow and contemplative. I have enjoyed listening to it from the first time on! I do not completely agree with all of his theology, but the theology is not shoved down your throat and I can still appreciate the work.
The one warning I have with this CD, as well as the majority of his work, is that most of the songs are in a minor key. While this is great for contemplation, too much music in a minor key can bring some people down.
My favorite selection from this CD is "In God's Peace (On Early Death)." This song really puts into perspective our journey here on earth and the glory that awaits those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Messiah in Heaven.
JMT is my favorite.......2002-01-01
John Michael Talbot has been writing and singing some of the most beautiful, peaceful music I've ever heard. A long time fan, I have every one of his titles and "Wisdom" will find a place in my collection. I'd highly recommend his music if you like calm, classical music that exalts God. Unlike most of modern day Christian "rock" Talbot's music transcends this age and I believe remain a classic always.
Michael, The Classic.........2001-11-04
I've always been a fan of John Michael Talbot, since listening to "The Quiet" with Peter's Canticle and St. Francis song..Lord make me an instrument of your peace...where there is hatred let me sow love..
Wisdom is another beautiful work coming from a sensitive man that loves God with his heart and soul.

Easy Listening.......2007-01-05
This was a gift for someone who heard my copy and wanted it. That's the best recommendation I can give. It's smooth and mellow to listen to early in the morning on my drive to work.
A simple, successful formula.......2005-08-30
John Michael Talbot's music is soulful, relaxing and deeply spiritual. He is clearly a man of prayer, which gives his music resonance and depth. There is some truly beautiful music on this CD, with lyrics adapted from scripture (especially the psalms) or the writings of spiritual giants like St. Teresa of Avila. "God Alone Is Enough," with words taken from one of St. Teresa's prayer, is a simple and moving expression of the certainty of God's plenitude. "This Befell Us," with words from Psalm 44, is also quite moving, expressing confidence in God even in the midst of pain and injustice.
The CD is a bit disappointing, however. Talbot seems to have found a formula for his music: pick a verse out of sacred writings, set it to a simple melody, then repeat for 3-1/2 minutes. Talbot seemingly can do this in his sleep, giving this work a disturbing sense of predictability. Unless he gets himself out of this rut, successful though it may be, I don't predict buying more of his CDs.
Still, "Simple Heart" has many moments of simple beauty, which partly make up for its drawbacks. For sheer musical content, a 3, plus 1 for good use of scriptural sources.
Joyful, Peaceful Comtemplation of God the Father.......2004-01-02
John Michael Talbot is at his best when writing and singing quiet, meditative guitar-based songs. Because so many of his songs are fashioned from Scripture, they are unfettered by denominational confines, and can be enjoyed ecumenically.
Some of the songs, like "God Alone is Enough," are inspired by early Christians. "God Alone..." is attributed to be based on the writing of Teresa of Avila, a Sixteenth Century Spanish nun. Largely, though, the songs are derivations and paraphrasings of Psalms.
Any who enjoyed JMT's 1989 double CD "Quiet Side" will find "Simple Heart" to be a perfect transition. After reading Scripture, or while walking, this can help facilitate meditation and focus on God. When grieving a loss in my life, I found in "Simple Heart," and in "Quiet Side" great solace and a reminder of the goodness and faithfulness of God.
It is good rest. This isn't easy listening or light new age, nor is it background music. Despite the peaceful nature of JMT's voice and style, I believe it was produced to be interactive, to provide spiritual direction.
I fully recommend "Simple Heart" by John Michael Talbot. Companion books worth reading with a similar tone are those by Henri Nouwen, Richard J Foster, Brennan Manning and Oswald Chambers.

depth and truth.......2002-04-04
I have several Talbot CDs and have listened to him for about 11 years. Besides The Hiding Place, this is the most profoundly simple and moving CD I've heard from him or anyone. Particularly the song "God Alone is Enough." The lyrics meaningfully state: "God alone is enough. Whoever has God, wants for nothing at all." These lyrics have affected me many times and the music is also very fitting. I recommend this CD without hesitation for anyone seeking a simple and true musical ministry experience.
wonderful but sad.......2001-02-20
This is a beautiful album of song and hope. The saddest thing was the composer's despair (based on the inner cover) over the culture and the world in which he lives. I am a pastor. I have many occasions to engage the sorrows and troubles of the world, terrible suffering, endless senselessness, but there is also so much in life to celebrate and in which to rejoice! I hope that this gifted composer will also find that past his blessed sorrow and longing comes laughter and delight. It is those things that fuels power for justice and hope - for change!

Customer Reviews:
Unbelieveable.......2006-03-13
Here is a 4-CD Set that costs less than most 2-CD Sets; and this one has 100 songs; all original. You cannot go wrong with this one. A fine booklet is also included which provides info regarding discography. All of ET's big hits are here, as well as some lesser known numbers. There's duets with the legendary Red Foley, and you can hear the incredible lead guitar which made his music so recognizable, despite the ever-changing lineup of guitarists on display here. Proper Records released this set, and they deserve a big thumbs-up on this one.
Great Value .......2005-12-29
Wow - a compendium of the best of Ernest Tubb from 1941-1950 at a bargain price. Sound quality is excellent (given the age of the masters) and the music is quintessential Texas Troubador, including the original versions of most of his biggest hits. Proper has put out a set which restores the early Tubb catalog in a manner befitting the efforts of Bear Family but at about 1/3 of the price of an equivalent Bear collection. Ernest was in his vocal prime with these recordings, and (although his bands here were not as good as later collections of Texas Troubadors -particularly the mid-60s batch), The Texas Troubadors augment ET's efforts in an appropriate manner. Those who saw ET in his later years will note that the arrangements of some of his 40s hits changed over time, particularly that of his signature tune "Walking The Floor Over You" , which sounds relatively acoustic here compared to the rather jazzy number it became in the hands of later, more amplified, versions of the Texas Troubadours
ERNEST TUBB.......2005-10-07
GOOD OLE ERNEST TUBB, HE'S ANOTHER GOOD ONE, I GREW UP WITH HIS SONGS OR MOST OF THEM.
I spent my misspent youth listening to Ernest Tubb.......2004-06-12
I have Peter Harris to thank for bringing this boxed set to my attention. I had a small collection of Tubb's songs, but one in particular, which I always liked, I could not find anywhere;
probably because I had the name wrong: I thought it was "On My Way to Italy (From the Gulf of Mexico)". It was, instead, titled "Seaman's Blues." I could play it on the guitar, and knew the lyrics, but I wanted it by Ernest Tubb. Now I have it. Thanks again, Peter Harris (see his spotlight review.)
There are four CDs in this boxed set, with 25 songs on each, all by Ernest Tubb. Too many to critique them all, but if you are familiar with his singing, you won't need a critique. Contrary to another critic, I found the quality of the CD quite good. I'm always amazed at the number of critics who spend more time criticizing the technical quality of the vehicle (CD, DVD, etc.) than the quality of the singer's voice or instrumental skill of the side men.
These days, it is the digital mastering. In the old days it was the clicks and pops in the records. Well, in the beer halls on the Mex border, we were often too drunk to care, and we enjoyed the music for the music itself. T. Texas Tyler and Ernest Tubb were big with that audience. Marty Robbins was in the Navy at the time (along with me) and no one had yet heard of him. We never heard of Patsy Cline or Jim Reeves, either, although they may have been around. We surely knew Eddy Arnold, although he was not yet Pat Boone's father-in-law, and Red Foley.
So, don't expect soothing pop music from Ernest Tubb. It's country/western, beer hall music that you could sit and nurse your broken heart to all night. Run Western music backwards, as they say, and you get your girl back, your truck back, your dog back, your horse back, and you don't need Western music anymore. And that would be a shame.
