This is a very short (27 minutes) CD featuring Christmas songs recorded for Chess Records. Of course, one reason for the short running time may be that Chess Records didn't actually release all that many Christmas records. But they did release Christmas albums by Kenny Burrell and the Soulful Strings, neither of which is represented here. That's a shame, because the Kenny Burrell album is an acknowledged classic. Anyway, the music that is here is good. "Run Rudolph Run" by Chuck Berry is the best known of the songs included here, but there are many other fine selections. The Moonglows, The O'Jays, the Ramsey Lewis Trio and several gospel groups turn in good performances. This CD is a worthy addition to your Christmas collection, especially since it's so cheap.

Silvery harmonies and traditonal arrangements have earned The Christmas Travelers a permanent spot in my holiday play list. Christmas in Carrick is probably the best Celtic Christmas song I've ever heard (and the best version of that song--Eric Rigler's mini-reel is brilliant).

Some of the selections are Celtic (Carol for an Irish Cabin, Christmas in Killarney, etc.) but most of them are just good old fashioned Christmas favorites. This is definitely not one of the group's more sophisticated efforts, but it's got a homey, friendly feel to it. You can hear the smiles in the voices. Hearing CT come on my CD player is like seeing a good friend at the door.

Christmas Traveler is one of my favorite Christmas CDs and I'm a major Christmas fanatic. The Browne Sisters and George Cavanaugh sing old standards like "White Christmas," as well as lesser known songs like "Christams in Killarney." George Cavanaugh's version of "We Three Kings of Orient Are" is beautiful and haunting. You can almost envision the three kings on their way to the manger. For those of you who, like me,cry everytime you hear "I'll be home for Christmas" the Browne Sisters version of this timeless song will make you want to call family and friends near and far and tell them how much you love them. Whether you like the old standards or are looking for something new, this CD has it all!

The first time I really listened to this album was on a roadtrip through West Texas and into Big Bend National Park. With violins, mandolins, twangy guitars, and melancholy horns; the Theater Fire emanates the same solitary wind that I remember of the West Texas desert. The songwriting is fantastic with tales and characters of the old west, and yet anyone can relate to their situations in these musical tales. This album is definitely worth buying.
