A dozen gem-Stones.......2007-02-14

BIG HITS (High Tide And Green Grass) is a solid distillation of the Rolling Stones' first few years. The album is heavy with hits, and stands the test of time-- a real tribute to one of the greatest bands ever.

Every Song a Diamond.......2006-06-11

Everybody loves "Satisfaction" who can't get enough of that song? But for me, my favorite song on this record is "Heart of Stone." Of course, I love the last two slow ones too. I love all the songs in between as well. Most of the songs on this excellent compilation were written by Mick and Keith and playing them, you can see what really great song writers they were (and still are). These songs are all diamonds, glowing in a fire, especially the very beautiful "As Tears Go Bye." You can never go wrong with the Rolling Stones, that's for sure.

Play it Loud, but Turn it Down Toward the End.......2006-06-11

Every time I play this record I find myself reaching for the volume knob on my old, but still great McIntosh tube amp. Each song I seem to play a just a little louder than the last, till by the time I get to the Stones rockin' version of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" the JBL speakers I inherited from my parents, when they retired and bought one of those Bounder motor homes, are blowing the house down. I generally turn it down after "Fade Away" preferring to sort of mellow out during the band's gorgeous song "Good Times, Bad Times" and the very excellent "Play with Fire." Yeah, that's the way you should play this record, Play it Loud, but Turn it Down Toward the End.

Satisfaction Still Guaranteed.......2006-06-11

This record was put together with songs that were on the British version of past records, B sides and a couple knock down, drag out hits. By the time this record came out the Stones had taken the world by Storm. Girls were screaming at their concerts, guys too, I'm told. But then how can you possible hold it in when Mick's on stage shouting out "Satisfaction." Boy I know I'd've been a screaming, wetting my panties too. "Big Hits" opens with "Satisfaction," ends with "Play with Fire" and every song between is a gem, especially their cover of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now." I've said it before, I'll say it again, you can't go wrong with the Rolling Stones, they come with Satisfaction Guaranteed.

This album rocks! She is great!

The debut solo album from Basia (last name Trzetrzelewska) continues her collaboration with Danny White, the two of whom had previously done an album together as members of the group Matt Bianco (1984's "Who's Side Are You On?"). And what a pairing the two of them are! This album is simply superb.

First of all, Basia is out of this world as a vocalist. She's got a total command of her huge, riveting voice, alternating brilliantly between tender, seductive passages and powerful, thrilling climaxes, and she does so without ever slipping over into show-biz schmaltz. She's got a huge vocal range that she gets a ton of mileage out of. Although the liner notes don't explicitly say so, I believe Basia also handles ALL of the harmony vocals on the entire CD, and she's brilliant at this as well.

Basia and her "silent partner" Danny White produced the album, and they also handled all of the songwriting except for Peter Ross' lyrics on 5 of the songs (including the US top 10 adult contemporary hits "Promises" and "New Day For You").

Basically the whole album runs on pure inspiration and class. There are loads of great instrumental flavorings such as the sudden blasts of 'xylophone' (synthesizer?) on "Run For Cover", moody 'clavinet' that comes in on the second verse of "Freeze Thaw", vibraphone on "New Day For You", funky electric guitar on "Prime Time TV", Fender Rhodes-style keyboards on many of the songs, and on & on.

On the one hand, this is a dance-pop album, with a majority of the songs being uptempo and beat-oriented--the sassy "Run For Cover", the raging "Freeze Thaw", the upbeat yet contemplative "New Day For You" (with an orgasmic extended high note, plus a three chord keyboard groove later 'borrowed' by George Michael for "Too Funky"), and the slyly humorous "Prime Time TV" (partly reminiscent of "Dance Hall Days" by Wang Chung) are all mind-bogglingly catchy and infectious. At the same time, this is a mature adult contemporary pop album, with lots of fun and witty lyrics and barely anything that even remotely resembles sappiness. Songs such as "Promises" and "New Day For You", as their respective chart placings indicate, fall easily into both categories.

Unlike a lot of dance-pop records, this one DOESN'T come to a grinding halt with the ballads. Actually, the only time they really slow the tempo is on the hit title track, an excellently tuneful ballad. Other quasi-ballads like the breezy, stripped-down "From Now On" and the Astrud Gilberto tribute "Astrud" give you something of a breather from the more rousing tracks, and yet they're taken at brisk tempos and saturated with Latin rhythms, and like virtually everything, these songs are wonderfully melodic and catchy.

Anything at all to complain about? Well, very minor stuff. Basia's warning cries of "I'll get mad!" on the swinging "How Dare You" are corny, but otherwise the song is in the same league as the aforementioned dance-pop gems contained herein. "Promises" has a slightly sugary, repeated chorus, but it's still a darn fine way to start the album. And the album-closer, the gently-swinging "Miles Away", in perfectly fine song, but it reeks ever-so-slightly of being a forced attempt to end the album on an upbeat feel-good note. These are just minor gripes of an overall terrific CD.

As an interesting sidenote, Danny White is the younger brother of Peter White. Peter, who is probably best-known for his lengthy association with Al Stewart, even appears on this record--witness his unmistakable acoustic guitar solo on "Promises".

Simply put, Basia is irresistible on this album, and if you're a music lover, "Time And Tide" is a must-have.

A genuine..........2006-02-01

A genuine masterpiece. This LP doesn't require "growing on you". You'll find your very pupils dialating with the first listen. From the opening to the close. You'll be depressive that the greatness is over, but don't fret, repeat. This album should require a disclaimer on it's greatness. You'll love this LP for it's swooning ballads with hooks to the pop frenzy of fun. This LP never dates. It's truly as fine as wine.

THE Zimmer Powerhouse Album.......2006-12-16

Ok, so I've been collecting Zimmer and countless other classical-film score composers since I was 8. This is definately one of Zimmer's defining momtents as a composer. The themes and orchestrations presented here are just mind blowing, and totally great.

Buy if you are a fan of Zimmer, or muscular score music.

Zimmer's score for Crimson Tide is, in my opinion, one of the more overrated scores that has been written in the last 20 years. This score is continually lauded by music lovers as powerful, inspiring, and exciting. I would apply those adjectives to the theme of the film (heard in the first, fourth, and fifth tracks on the album) but to little else in the score. The other problem here is that the tracks are so long that to hear the great theme, you'll need to listen to at least 10 minutes of music that is adequate at best, and downright boring at worst. When I first got this score years ago I would have given it 5 stars, but I think I was being influenced by what everyone else was saying about it. Now that I've had it a while and listened to it scores of times I have to say that other than the 2 minutes of brilliant theme heard 3 times in this score, there is little else for me to recommend in it. The one possible exception is the hymn on the album heard twice--it's beautifully sung, though the lyrics are unintelligible. That I would still give something three stars, though, even though I really only enjoy 6 minutes of the album, says something about what a great theme this one has. Those familiar with Pirates of the Carribean will notice that one of its theme is a shameful replay of part of the theme from this film.

When Robert Cray and the Fabulous Thunderbirds turned their similar combinations of Texas blues and Memphis soul into hit records in 1986, bar bands all across this land thought they had glimpsed the promised land of a long-awaited blues revival. There has been a flood of soul-blues releases since then, many of which have been respectable, even admirable, but they have lacked the two essential ingredients that gave the genre its artistic peak 30 years ago, as well as its brief resurgence 20 years later--terrific songs and outstanding singers. Delbert McClinton's One of the Fortunate Few has both those elements. The guest vocalists include Mavis Staples, Lyle Lovett, Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis, and Vince Gill, but it's McClinton's own coarse-grained Texas baritone--as supple as a snake and as definitive in its bite--that dominates the soundscape. And it's McClinton's co-producer and cowriter, Gary Nicholson, who makes the difference in the material. Nicholson, whose day job is writing mainstream-country hits, indulges his blues jones at night and has come up with rollicking uptempo numbers and gospel-drenched ballads.

Most importantly, Nicholson's lyrics contain both the irreverent wit that Cray lacks and the confessional angst lacking in the T-Birds. The humor crackles in McClinton's belt-it-out vocal on "Old Weakness (Coming on Strong)" and an aching need is felt in his restrained duet with Staples on "Somebody to Love You." --Geoffrey Himes

This is an excellent Delbert CD; HOWEVER! If you're looking for his SONG "One Of The Fortunate Few", it's not on this album. THAT little ditty is on his album "Cost Of Living", which is worth its cost, just for that one track, although the rest of the CD is Delbert at his best!

I bought this fifth album of Delbert McClinton's expecting to be entertained and wasn't disappointed. It has turned out to be one of my favorite collections, from the catchy tune "Too Much Stuff", to the more serious song, "You Were Never Mine".

Delbert McClinton has one of those great bluesy voices that sounds so "regular" that you think you could do it, but in reality its got a depth and quality that is hard to match. On this album he really has some fun, and that howl is unmistakable. Sending Me Angels is a personal fave with him getting help from country greats Vince Gill on vocals and Lee Roy Parnell on slide guitar. Old Weakness calls to mind the fun lovin Stones classic honkytonk woman. and Leap of Faith cheesy as it might sound can perk up a dreary day with no problem.

The Elders get better and better..........2007-03-02

This is a fantastic CD. The Elders are different than The Pogues, or Flogging Molly, but have a style that fans of those great bands will enjoy. Standouts include Bad Irish Boy, Send a Prayer, Racing the Tide, Gonna Take a Miracle, and Saint Brendan Had a Boat. One of my missions for the next year or two is to travel to see The Elders, since it doesn't look like they'll be in California in the near future. Check out earlier CD's as well, you can't go wrong.

Fantastic New Release from The Elders.......2007-02-17

Racing the Tide, the newest release from The Elders, shows off all the immaculate musicianship, strong songwriting and story telling skills of this Kansas City based Celtic rock band. Formed in 1998 The Elders have been rocking Kansas City and Celtic festivals across the country for the last 7 years. County Wicklow native Ian Byrne fronts the band, lead singer, bohdran and battle drum, with Steve Phillips, guitar (formerly of The Rainmakers), Brent Hoad on fiddle, Norm Dahlor on bass, Tommy Sutherland - drums, and relative newcomer to the band, Joe Miquelon on keys.

Foot tapping, sing-along beckons as the Cd opens with Send a Prayer. The band are well known for telling "true stories" at their live shows, and the first track is followed by some of these true stories... Uncle Charlie, Story of a Fish and Bad Little Irish Boy (could this bad little irish boy be Ian we wonder?). The title track Racing the Tide is my favourite cut on this CD, wonderful harmonies. Brent Hoad's incredible lyrics are showcased in Dear God, St Brendan Had a Boat (another true story if legends are to be believed). The track Australia is a departure from the majority of the Elders tunes, putting one in mind of a 1920's speakeasy. You'll rock out with Gonna Take a Miracle, and Right with the World.

I strongly encourage you to buy this CD.... and see The Elders live if you ever get the chance - you won't be sorry.

The Elders are an excellent Celtic band. They have songs with energy and meaning along with fun. Ian is a great lead singer and the band has awesome harmony as well. Their songs DO stick in you head long after the last track. Well done...CHEERS!

Racing the Tide, by the Elders.......2007-02-12

A truly remarkable CD. The music is original and ranges from driving, up-tempo pieces that make the listener want to "crank it up" to a couple of tunes that slow things down just enough to help you get into the story that the song tells. Lyrics are creative and compelling. Some are just for fun, some tell important stories, and they stay in your head long after you turn the CD off. This is good stuff! D Schaal

The Tide has come in!.......2006-11-03

Even though the music on this CD was recorded in 1967, it still "works" in this present time. Jobim was truly ahead of his time - he was a genius, like Mozart. The music on this CD ranges from the most beautiful and lyrical song you can hear ("Sue Ann")to a totally groovin' and movin" song ("Remember"- totally addicting- you will play it over and over)to the most rocking and rolling cuts (4 versions, 4 cuts,of "Tema Jazz")you can imagine Jobim could compose! What a variety! You can play this as background music to any activity you are engaged in ( I play it while I work - it is very energizing!)and also play it in your computer - great music to keyboard by! Definitely worth buying - I got two - one for my husband, who is working away from home, and one for myself. You will not regret this purchase.

Jobim's music is very elegant and classy. It can be also a background on any activities - you will feel comfortable and relaxed. "Tide" is my favourite instrumental album.

I first bought TIDE on vinyl, shortly after it was released, already being a fan of Jobim. I played the grooves off of it. Now, I have it in CD. It's doubtful anyone in the world has played and listened to this album more than I have over the years. The appeal is threefold: First, Jobim's music is relentlessly upbeat and mood elevating. There is a happiness and joy which never fails to make your outlook on life better. Second, the music is relaxing. It cuts through tension and removes the stress and aggravation of everyday living. Third, it's rhythmic. Brazilian beats are recognized as the most expressive and soul-moving in the world. If these rhythms don't get your body subtly moving, you'll need life supports! If you don't know Jobim or haven't listened to Brazilian Bossa Nova, start here! Jobim is the undisputed, heavyweight champion of the genre and THIS album is at the absolute top of his work. Do NOT miss it!

Boy From Ipanema Strikes Again.......2005-10-02

Although the "Wave" album may be a tad superior to this effort, this is extremely enjoyable nonetheless. The variations of "Girl From Ipanema" are very unusual. The beginning and ending piano chord progressions herald that this is not the dreamy version of old but a new exciting journey to that famed beach. The other tracks, especially the different versions of "Tema Jazz", are the icing on the cake.

Those who may dismiss this as a tepid effort (even I have to admit that "Tide" is just a variation of "Wave"; it's just too obvious.) should just listen rather than judge. No matter what, this is still a gorgeous album with beautiful music and worth listening to over and over again.

One of the best Split Enz albums.......2007-04-18

They never truly hit it big in America but Split Enz should have. Perhaps it was the make-up and stage shows or just a matter of timing. Regardless, they left us a series of fun, perplexing, great sounding albums. "Time and Tide" the best of the Finn-Finn era of the Enz sounds even better than before. I've always loved "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" but there are many more gems here from both Tim and Neil beyond that marvelous single.

This remaster (done by former Enz Eddie Rayner)sounds terrific. Unlike a lot of remasters the sound quality isn't sacrificed just to make it sound LOUD. We get the entire album (a pity that there aren't any outtakes, demos or alternate tracks included)in a digipak (for the first edition. Later editions will, reportedly, be in jewel boxes although THIS review is for the digipak version). Lyrics are included but we don't get any notes on the creation of the fine album which is a minor drawback. Nevertheless Enz fans will probably know the circumstances all around its creation.

The CD has been cleverly designed to resemble a vinyl version of the original Aussie-NZ release of the album. The Enz truly never got any better than this and although they would put out two more studio albums (Tim left before their last album "See Ya Around". The next album "Conflicting Emotions" titled after Tim's feelings about leaving the band behind for a solo career would feature Neil's superb "Message for My Girl" and Tim's wistful "Bon Voyage")they could have quit right here and their legacy would be insured.

I'd highly recommend this terrific album and the remaster IS worth picking up for the richer, warmer sound that Rayner has managed to capture on CD.

Mary Black, as we love her!.......2007-05-12

"Full Tide" has all different kinds of moods in it. Sentimental, upbeat & perky, hopeful & soulful. I love every Mary Black recording and this is certainly no exception.

Worthy Black.......2007-02-15

First release of "new" material by Mary Black in over five years. Promising track list with covers of Noel Brazil, Sandy Denny, Bob Dylan; even a few penned by MB and son. The album is fairly reminiscent of Black's more recent releases, a mix of "adult contemporary" cuts with some folk, some traditional, a little gaelic thrown in for good measure.

Like many (most? imho) of her albums, it is the quiet, imtimate cuts that shine brightest on Full Tide. Mary's vocals come through strong, her allure is the way she can sing so beautifully and passionately with seeming effortlessness. But the lineup is a bit disjointed; it takes a while for this album to hit its stride.

Mary Black fans will nonetheless want to add this new material to their collection. If you are new to Mary Black, however, I would look to earlier albums (try "Holy Ground" for a more traditional sound, "Speaking with the Angel" for a bit more contemporary sound) as an introduction to MB's beautiful vocals before trying Full Tide.

I loved Rising Tide. but after playing it for a few days, I grew quite tired of it. and after listening to the Mixtape, I realized what I was missing. The Mixtape is absolutely worth listening, it is like no other remix out there. I mean, Jimi Hendrix remix? hell yes! My favorite is the Bloc Part ft. Apathy and Styles of Beyond. and including Lupe Fiasco just made this mixtape all the more enjoyable. GET THIS

Wow. Now let me repeat myself. Wow.
This is a Mixtape Masterpiece.
Now first off, I'd just like to point out that this Mixtape, is in fact legal.
Not like most Mixtapes that are actually illegal.

Second of all, I'd like to mention that, like most all Mixtapes, this Mixtape only contains "Explicit Content", and yet does not contain a "Parental Advisory" sticker.

Thirdly, I'd also like to mention that Mike Shinoda himself (aka Fort Minor) has said that anyone who wants to, may download this Mixtape for free off of the internet, and he (Mike Shinoda) actually debuted the Mixtape for free download on the internet, before it was ever even released in CD format, on a well hidden MySpace page.
So after you've purchased the Mixtape CD, feel free to make copies of it, and give it to friends, but please encourage them to also buy a copy, so as to support M. Shinoda (aka Fort Minor), along with getting a copy or two of "The Rising Tied".

This is the best mixtape I've ever heard. I'm not really into the mixtape scene, primarily because most of them recycle the same beats too much for me, but this one is way different. Fort Minor got creative with this one.

The production on this mixtape is off the charts. It makes the cd. Shinoda kills this mixtape production wise, and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite producers in the game. This cd contains some innovative sampling from bands you wouldn't expect to hear on a hip hop mixtape including: Guns N Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, and Bloc Party; and some of the beats on here will amaze you.

Shinoda is not the most gifted emcee, but he is capable of holding his own on the mic. Apathy and Lupe Fiasco spit some fire on this cd though. Styles of Beyond and Celph Titled have their moments on the mic as well. There is even surprise guest appearance by Juelez Santana on here, who spits a hot verse also.

The official cd Fort Minor put out-"The Rising Tied" used to get a lot of air time in my whip, but this mixtape has pretty much replaced it in my cd rotation. One of my boys told me "DUDE, You GOTTA burn this cd for me" after hearing three songs on it. Fort Minor: We Major is an underground gem.

An interesting example of the earliest psychodelic rock.......2007-06-27

As I say in my title, this cd is an interesting example of the earliest 60s psychodelic rock, interesting mainly for those who have a completist compulsion (probably this is my case) about a rock music genre. Of the pieces contained in this cd, the most outstanding is Missing Out, a very complex piece of music, filled of improvisation and jamming. However, in spite of being very good music, the sound of High Tide is dated. For me it is difficult to find currently any wave of neo-psychodelic rock that can be regarded as rooted in High Tide's achievement. Let us consider "Sea Shanties" as a very fine album that is representative of the musical idyosincrasy of the early psychodelic rock music of the 60s, without evident relevance in current psychodelic rock music.

Thick Guitars w/ Violin? I'd Be Stupid Not To Buy This!.......2007-03-01

Very interesting CD, great thick heavy guitar sound with a violin (doing duel solos w/ guitar), sounds awesome together. Another reviewer compared them to Hawkwind which is accurate, mix that with a hint of Spinal Tap (sorry, Stonehenge keeps popping up in my head when I listen to this)and Cactus with a violin and Morrison(ish) vocals. Not too much singing on this. Well worth getting if you are a fan of Psychedelic-Heavy-Prog rock. You won't be disappointed. Fans of: The Melvins,Cactus,Fu Manchu,MC5,Stooges,Amboy Dukes,Humble Pie,Foghat,Faces (you get the picture) will love this CD. If you are not a big fan of 10 minute long jams, there are a few of them on here but they are more interesting than the usual jams (not as boring).

Wicked between-the-cracks psych metal (get the bonus tracks version).......2007-02-08

High Tide was pushed to me as a great, hard-rocking psych that somehow didn't achieve success when it was first released. After checking it out so many years after it was released, I totally agree. Sea Shanties is a relentless barrage of rock--the rhythm section is tight and heavy, the guitar is mind-blowingly intricate and gnarly, and the effect-laden violin matches the lead guitar in weight, making High Tide a unique hybrid in rock history.

Sea Shanties is definitely doom rock--singer Tony Hill gloomily intones some pretty dark lyrics about the earth, death etc. (just check out the first track for an example) with a delivery that isn't unlike Jim Morrison's. Except, in this case, Hill takes a few more risks with the high range.

After a couple listens to Sea Shanties, I was really surprised and impressed at their fusion of ridiculously heavy hard rock with folk elements (listen to the epic barnstormer "Death Warmed Up" for the English folk flavors grinding out of that violin bow, supported by the screeching guitar). Not only is there a folk element, there's definitely a classical element too--just check out the guitar/violin runs in "Walking Down Their Outlook," probably my favorite track. This record goes a lot of places, but it's hard-rocking all the way through.

Probably the best songs are the ones where the doubling and call/response of the guitar and violin reach towering heights, like "Death Warmed Up." On all tracks, though, you can hear that the band took great care in composing a unique blend of both instruments.

If you like Led Zeppelin (a contemporary of High Tide, and one of the few bands that was rocking as hard), the Doors, or any early 70's psych and metal and like to hear music with a diverse range of influences, Sea Shanties will probably pleasantly surprise you--there's still some great music from the early 70's waiting to be discovered!

Lastly, if you buy Sea Shanties (which you should) make sure to get the version with 5 bonus tracks--lots more music for your money).

High Tide and High time they released this on CD.......2006-11-10

As my review for Leaf Hound states...I also read that this was another very sought after vinyl recording from those hazy crazy days of the late 60's, early 70's. These guys sound as if Jim Morrison joined a 'progressive band' and sang for them. The music is progessive hard rock meets pyscedellic, very English, especially for those days. Don't expect this to be a headbanger in the vien of Zep, Sab or Purple. Think more the Doors meets Soft Machine. For a collector of this era of rock music, though, it is a must have.

High Tide - 'Sea Shanties' (Repertoire).......2006-05-30

Originally released in 1969,as 'Sea Shanties' was the first of High Tide's five albums put out.I previously thought they had more,guess I was wrong.Nicely done and well produced piece of progressive folk/rock here.Cuts I was most impressed with were "Futilists Lament",the nine-minute "Death Warmed Up" where Simon House's violin work really shines and "Missing Out".Line-up:Tony Hill-guitar,future Hawkwind off-and-on member Simon House-violin,Peter Pavli-bass and Roger Hadden-drums.Might appeal to fans of(don't hold me to this)Quatermass,Soft Machine and Third Ear Band(House's other pre-Hawkwind band).Good music here,just not 100% sure who EXACTLY would enjoy it as much as I did.A should-have.
