Funky debut from Michael Cooper.......2004-10-18

Michael Cooper really tried to challenge Larry Blackmon of Cameo for the funk male singer title with this album in late 1987 and he succeeded. A lot of Owwwwws on here too howling from him on here! Love this debut! The high point is the heavy funk of To Prove My Love on here, as funky as all of his band Con Funk Shun's hits. I still love his smooth Dinner For Two, romantic as it is. Some other songs I like are Quickness and Ocean Breeze. One of the best debuts from an artist to leap from a very successful '70s funk band! He's still doing it today with his solo career!

Yo, I got my lady and I got my lights down in my crib, and we gots Love is Such a Funny Game on the hi-fi. You want slow jams, smooth as honey ballads and little of the 80's funk, you gets it all with this CD. I ask my lady do she like this CD and she just give me a look, you know, THE look. Its a little old school, but what is a brotha in his 30s to do, yo. This is classic R&B. "Dinner For Two" is the one that get my lady in a groove. "Quickness" sound like Prince, but without the high vocals. Look for this and also the other CD right afta this one. My brothaz you kaint go wrong.

Funky '80s re-visited.......2002-07-26

I became a fan of Michael Cooper when he released the album "Just What I Like" in 1989. I had not heard any of his solo music before this album, so I thought I would give this album a try. It's a nice mix of slow, and upbeat jams with that late '80s flavour thrown in which I really like, then and now! If you like some genuine "funktified" jams, then this album will not fail to please.

.....the Top 20 Jam from this was "Dinner For Two". "Quickness" and "Thinking About You" were played consistently on my side of the hemisphere....Jay King actually allowed Cooper to do his solo thing. Let's get the facts a little straight. At least read the liner notes....

This is a MUST BUY for any PP&M fan. The sound mix is fantastic for an album that was recorded in front of a live audience. Do hesitate to add this to your collection.

great collection of songs.......1999-10-26

This recording includes some songs that I really like. For example, "Power" really helps me understand the controversy over nuclear energy. "Music Speaks Louder than Words" is a very positive song that I like to listen to even when under stress. There is only one improvement I can think of: There is no commentary about the different songs. I think they could have included a few presentations about the songs to help listeners learn more about what they are hearing. There might have been commentary on the original LP, but it might have been edited out. Over all, I still think this is a really good recording and I would recommend it to anyone who likes folk music.

Live, and never better!!.......1999-02-01

Peter Paul & Mary deliver the best live album they've ever done. This was recorded back in 1981, and I bought the album at a PP&M concert around that time (give or take a year). I spent years hoping it would come out on CD, and here it is at last!!

For Stan Rogers fans, the rendition of "Delivery Delayed" was every bit as powerful as Stan's own. "There But For Fortune", a Phil Ochs classic, evoked overtones of Harry Chapin's Phil Ochs story, "The Parade's Still Passing By". And that's just two of my favorites.

The vocal harmony on the album is crisp, and bassist Dick Kniss stands out more with songs not usually heard on PP&M albums. As soon as I saw this on CD, I bought it. You should too. There isn't a clunker in the bunch. It's a good change of pace from the "concert standards" we know and love, and an opportunity to hear them at their best.

This is the first time this album has been on CD. Previously, it was out of issue. If you have the vinyl recording, you know how good this album is. If you are about to hear this for the first time, you'll be thrilled! Buy it! It's wonderful!

The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.
