About the Artist
Emily's music is inspirational and ecclectic. There is something for everyone and her toe-tapping melodies will have you singing for hours. With insightful lyrics and a true sense of God's Love, SPLASH is a delightful album.

For her second full-length Breeders album, Kim Deal jettisoned Tanya Donelly, brought in her sister Kelley as lead guitarist (despite the fact that she could barely play when she joined), and came up with a disc full of fun, toothsome rock, not least of which was the mammoth summer-of-'93 hit "Cannonball," a celebration of mosh-pit bounce and purred innuendo. Deal's voice is coy, but the band's full of dreamy energy, rocking like her old band the Pixies without their abrasion, tomboyish rather than macho. Not everything on Last Splash is fully fleshed out as a song, but even the more fragmentary pieces--the embittered punk mutter of "I Just Wanna Get Along," the horny daydream "Divine Hammer"--speed the album's flow. --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not very listenable today.......2007-01-08

Back in the day, this was very popular. Not many people are driving around with this in their cd player today. It sounds dated.

However, "Cannonball" is a classic. This band just happened to stumble on a genuine, "Louie, Louie" type of song.

"No Aloha" is interesting (sounds very Pixie ish), "Divine Hammer" is decent and "Driving on 9" is a cool, trucker vibe of a song.

The rest of this is pretty unlistenable.

5 out of 5 stars Power Pop Masterpiece.......2006-09-10

While driving through Utah this summer, my girlfriend's little sister insisted we start this CD on track 13, but since the CD player repeats we still hear all the songs... I think she just wanted to hear "Driving on 9" twice, as it's a brilliant finish to the CD... but the thing is, the ebb and flow of this CD is absolutely brilliant! If you let it roll on repeat and start in the middle or end, it just doesn't seem to have a beginning or an end. Instead, it has a kind of ying-yang flow that pulls you into an endlessly beautiful, powerful vision of the world. You have to really play it a few times to get it, but not too many times.

Another great trademark of a masterpiece is that it never seems to get old or dated. I really believe that if it were released today it would still get plenty of airplay. Whatever you may have heard about this CD, well, it's all talk until you really start playing it. A masterpiece speaks for itself, and that's exactly what this is: A Rock'n'Roll Power Pop Masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me of "Speaking In Tongues"...for some reason........2006-07-20

This is a great album. But for some reason, it has always reminded me of the 1983 Talking Heads album "Speaking In Tongues" and I have no clue why. The sound is completely different, but, I don't know, I think maybe the status of both of the albums are alike. "SIT" had a huge rock hit on it with "Burning Down the House" and of course "Cannonball" is the song everyone knows from this album. But there are many other great songs on here. Namely: Drivin' on 9', Invisible Man, Saints, Flipside, Divine Hammer, etc. Definitely worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars An Acquired Taste.......2006-02-03

When I first listened to this CD I hated it. Save for maybe a couple of songs, the rest I found boring. I listened to it for a while, and it still didn't grow on me. I put it away and then a few months later I took it out again. This time I fell in love. I can't explain why. 'Last Splash' is definately an album you must acquire a taste for. It's an album you won't love at first but instead find irritating, and that's what makes it challenging and a good album. The Breeder's (whom I have heard were ripped off by bands such as Veruca Salt) blow their copiers out of the water. They have a sound all their own, and they use great techniques and little sound effects you won't notice the first time. The lyrics are rather vague, and that's what makes them great because they are open to interpretation by anyone. 'No Aloha' gives me chills just listening to the middle of the song where the drums kick in. Everything about 'Last Splash' is weird, weird, weird, and that's what makes it such a compelling and unique album.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant, hunt this down........2005-12-20

i bought this album at a coconuts 4 years ago for $2. i bought more as a piece of 90's nostalgia, but i ended up spinning it far more often than i had imagined. I adore the pixies, but sometimes i find myself spinning this more than their later efforts. Surfer Rosa and Doolittle will always have their soft spots in my heart, but i find Last Splash to be more consistent than Trompe Le Monde or even Bossanova. i feel kind of strange that this was only $2. it is almost insulting to a brilliant band. I highly reccomend you get out there and look in the bargain bins for this one and dig in. you will not be disappointed. Especially if you find yourself enjoying Scout Niblett, Sleater Kinney, or the Fiery Furnaces these days.

A pleasant suprise from Luscious Jackson co-founder Gabby. Those familiar with the LJ sound can finally & justly attribute to Ms. Glaser most the quirky funky soulfulness of the LJ sound! In this album I hear a faithful yet fresh emulation of the 1970's. (For the stylistically opposite, check out Jill Cunniff's fine City Beach)

My hat's off to Gabby & friends- for successfully evoking that sublime aural sensation of placing a new 45 on my tiny record player, pulling-apart the speakers, and then drifting upstream.

Gabby plays a very mean axe, without for an instant sounding like a guy. Her songwriting hits you at the gut level, and the production is spare, clean, and beautiful.

Check Ian Love's great slide work. In "Your Eyes," I heard a bit of Steve Howe..

Innaresting about who is and isn't in the Special Thanks. Ever photogenic, Gabb appears on the back cover splendidly.

My baby Casey was 10 months old, unable to walk, but she could stand against the couch and shake her legs to "Big, Bad, Billy." My Church gave me inspirtation to help with our outreach ministry. My family loves to sing along with "Go Fish."

2 out of 5 stars Warning to Parents.......2006-01-10

Music is upbeat but content is deceiving. It appears to be a Christian tape, but some songs were disturbing. "Lady Bug" is about a little boy that fries bugs with a magnifying glass. The majority of the song focuses on gross details with a brief tag that the boy is a thug. (Little boys are more likely to pick up on the how too's of bug incineration.) Very concerned with "My own Church". It encourages the mindset that corporate worship is on the same level as going to a circus. It is disrespectful and in poor taste. The artists are talented, but trying to appear not to take their faith too seriously so they appeal to secular market as well. Dissappointing at best, if you were looking for a good Christian cd.

Keith Lockhart might very well be the Backstreet Boy of classical music. With good looks, a ton of energy, and--most importantly--popular appeal, he leads the Boston Pops Orchestra through disc after disc of Americana compositions (and the odd Celtic title). A Splash of Pops is more of the same. The Boston Pops get downright patriotic by playing everything from Paul Simon's "America" to "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy," along with a few classical compositions (for example, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture). It's a light affair loaded with saccharine energy, but a few surprises (the overture to State Fair and the new "With Voices Raised," commissioned from the authors of Ragtime: the Musical) are thrown in to keep things interesting. For another sampling of Americana-based classical music, fans should seek out Leonard Bernstein conducting Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring with the New York Philharmonic. It's one of America's greatest recordings and a truer testament to the country's musical wealth. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars? More like 50 stars!.......2003-06-16

Keith Lockhart has continued behind the heels of John Williams at the helm of the Boston Pops Orchestra in extraordinary fashion since 1995. Anyone who has been privileged to see him conduct the Boston Pops can feel the enthusiasm he has for the orchestra's traditions and legacy- and for classical music. This theme certainly holds true for this CD. I have been collecting a set of good CDs for my 4th of July outdoor parties for the past few years and this one delivers in grand style.

I purchased this CD shortly after its release. The jewel cover alone will put a smile on your face and set the tone for summer's light-hearted, relaxed attitude. The front cover picture is of Mr. Lockhart, complete in tuxedo, splashing into a pool of water and the back cover picture of him in a BPO t-shirt and Hawaiian shirt being kissed by a stuffed clown fish he's holding with a pair of barbecue tongs. Fun, fun, fun! Bravo, Mr. Lockhart!

All the "classics" one would expect to hear for the patriotic holiday are here: "The Star Spangled Banner and "America The Beautiful (The Tanglewood Festival Chorus singing these two songs will give you the chills), "The 1812 Overture" (I can almost "see" the fireworks as BPO plays the finale), and "The Stars And Stripes Forever" (One cannot pass through the 4th of July without hearing at least one John Phillip Sousa song!).

The rest of the album is equally as entertaining with goodies like "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy." Others will also rouse your patriotic fevor such as: "Doodletown Fifers" (Fifes on the 4th? Of course!) and "America" (Paul Simon's wonderful song.) One of my favorites is "With Voices Raised." The Boston Pops plays background as the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, The Boston Pops Choir, and The Boston Gay Men's Choir sing and speak eloquent quotes from famous Americans as Abigal Adams, Martin Luther King, Fredrick Douglas, President John F. Kennedy, and Shirley Chisholm.

I have collected five CDs that get playtime over Independence Day through the day and evening. Ever since I purchased "Splash of Pops," though, it seems to get a bit more airing each year. You'll be dazzled and feel proud, happy, and content everytime you listen to it. Mr. Lockhart has produced some wonderful albums with the Pops Orchestra and he has certainly continued with this collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars America's Best Proove It.......2000-06-19

This is truly a Boston Pops recording at its best. Keith Lockhart and the Pops are definetly my favorite Orchestra, and with this CD I am reminded of exactly why. This Orchestra brings to life the power and passion that was ment in the writing of this music. I especially like "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The Pops and the Chorus truly bring out the joy and pain felt by African Americans throughout the years. And I also very much enjoy "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Few Orchestras can swing like the Pops.

All in all if you love the power and emotion of Orchestras, than you will love hearing America's Orchestra earn its name. Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra out do themselves this time.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably totally terriffic.......1999-08-18

This is almost a good as being in Symphony Hall in Boston or on the Esplanade with the stars overhead. The quality is outstanding; you are there! A must have especially if you like patriotic song. Don't hesitate...run!

5 out of 5 stars Keith does it again! A definate winner!.......1999-08-07

Bravo! The young and handsome Keith Lockhart is wonderful. Not only does he look adorable on the c.d. covers, but he is also bringing even more poularity to this already famous ensemble. I always look forward to seeing his fourth of July program on t.v. and now I get to hear it any time I want to. This is the third album of him conducting the B.P.O. I own and I'll keep buying them. This is the ultimate album for Americans and patriotic folk. I strongly recommend it to all as a fan of Keith and a faithful New Englander (even though I now reside in the south).

1 out of 5 stars get Kunzel instead.......1999-07-14

I don't understand the fascination with this young conductor. Everything he's doing has been done better by Erich Kunzel. If your not familier with Kunzel's work then try his name in amazon's search engine. He's made over 60 albums, most of them for Telarc, an American record company that makes the best sounding cd's available today

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

We bought this CD at a Wiggles concert a few months ago and accidentally left it in a car we traded in...hope the new owners are Wiggle fans! I quickly replaced it as my 5 year old absolutely loves this CD. A few of the songs are done in Spanish which is a nice change and is a great introduction to the language.

Very disappointed with the Wiggles lately. It seems as if they are having troubles coming up with new tunes. There are only a few new songs on this CD. If you don't have any of the Wiggles CD's, I would highly recommend this one. Otherwise, beware as you might be purchasing songs that you already have.

5 out of 5 stars First hits volume has most of his hits.......2003-04-13

This collection and the companion Mack the knife contain forty of Bobby Darin's finest songs from his peak years. Purely in terms of hits, this is the stronger volume, containing fifteen American hits, including six top ten hits, these being Splish splash, Queen of the hop, Dream lover, You must have been a beautiful baby, Things and If I were a carpenter.

Among the lesser hits, I'll be there later became a much bigger hit for Gerry and the pacemakers, while Early in the morning was also a hit for Buddy Holly.

Bobby's singles were sometimes covers of older songs. Here you can find his versions of Nature boy (Nat King Cole), What'd I say (Ray Charles) and Lovin' you (Lovin' spoonful).

This volume, with a lot of up-tempo songs and a few ballads, is generally more of a rock'n'roll collection than Mack the knife, which contains a few up-tempo songs and a lot of ballads. Taken together, the two volumes present a comprehensive collection of Bobby's A-sides from 1958 to 1961, plus three later songs - the last three tracks here.

5 out of 5 stars Iconic.......2002-07-19

Despite a turbulent career, Bobby Darin proved time and time again that if anyone had the power to stand in a vocal class with Frank Sinatra, it was him.

The only song that was left off hear that should have been a bonus track is "More" which can be found on "Wild, Cool, and Swingin'."

4 out of 5 stars Pretty terrific.......1999-06-04

A pretty terrific collection of Bobby Darin hits with an emphasis on the pop/rock corner of his versatile career. By no means definitive (and completely overshadowed by the "As Long As I'm Singing" boxed set), it nonetheless includes such treasures as "Dream Lover," "Things," and the best available version of Darin's self-penned "Simple Song of Freedom," a "protest" song that ironically became the only hit single for folk singer Tim Hardin, the author of "If I Were A Carpenter," Darin's last major hit single which is also included here. The accompanying booklet with background on each of the songs and an insightful overview of Darin's career adds to the pleasures of this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......1999-05-19

The CD has many great songs, especially I like Dream lover, Splish splash and You must have been a beautiful baby.

4 out of 5 stars The kids are alright!.......2005-01-13

I mean, the grooves are straight outta the R&B/funk book...and I mean that in the best way.

The big problem is the length...too long. But the artists of today all want to use up every byte of the CD format, so we end up with 17-21 tracks on an album. Back in the heyday of funk, they would be double albums or two seperate releases. They should take a hint from Prince. He could do double length CD's till he got bored. But he doesn't.

But still, great stuff and true to the formula made famous by AWB, EW&F, Gamble and Huff, P-Funk, etc. Always good to hear. If you liked The Love Below, you will like this. Panda One is one HECK of a producer.

3 out of 5 stars Funk to grow on.......2005-01-03

This cd has great lyrics and great beats. Plant Life rhymes are very smart. If they keep working hard like this, the group will live up to the hype.

5 out of 5 stars Quality new kind of FUNK.......2004-12-19

This kind of hiphop, or should I say funk, was widely introduced to public by Outkast. That's why, it's often reffered as "the outkast style". Well anyways, Plant Life is about the same. Even the lead singer sounds a lot like Andre 3000. But Plant Life is a lot more underground. Their album is fun and deep in the same time, it has those love songs but also some tracks for the floors. Its been hyped by Pharell, Gilles Peterson and Mos Def amongst others. And it's well worth it.
Now I actually call it funk. Because it is funk all the way. The new way of funk, influenced by rock, jazz, hiphop and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Stanky & Funky Through and Through.......2004-12-12

AWWWWWWWWWW. Music I am able to appreciate right off the bat. I was moving and grooving from beginning to end. Inspiring and Refreshing! Real music ain't dead. My favorite cuts are Appreciate, We Can Get High, Bottle of Hope, and If I was Your Man. Welcome Back Jack Splash. May the funk rise and be with you.

3 out of 5 stars Not as funky as I'd hoped.......2004-12-08

Since I've been starving for original, innovative music for a long time now, I'm willing to give almost anyone a chance if I think they're attempting to break the mold or think outside the box. When I started reading about Plant Life and heard all the comments and reviews comparing them to Funkadelic, Sly, Prince and Outkast, I figured they were worth a shot in the dark.

Unfortunately, this disk is not the funk bomb I'd been anticipating. It started good but got slower and more boring with each track. The lead singer has an obnoxious voice and the grooves sound canned and prefab instead of organic or soulful. I give it three stars because their hearts seem to be in the right place and they're at least trying to be different. But the biggest problem is the whole album indeed sounds as if they're *trying* to be funky instead of just going ahead and being funky. There's a self-conciousness about the music that robs it of a lot of it's kick.

After listening to it I got frustrated and spent the rest of the night listening to some actual classic funk and soul music. Perhaps one day we will really get a group that succeeds in reviving the sounds and attitudes of the old masters. Plant Life is on the right track but still misses the target with this effort. Perhaps they'll get it right next time.
