You Gotta Lover Her.......2007-03-08
Hey, no one ever said that Grace Jones was going to be the next Maria Callas, but she does have the ability to interpret a song in a very distinct and chronilogical manner. I cannot see many young people buying this album or even knowing who Grace is but for those of you who spent the seventies in your favorite dance club, you couldn't escape the sound that Grace made.
She is an icon for that time and a symbol of boldness and brashness for that era. Her voice may stray a bit off key but her voice rings with a joy that can only be associated with those times.
Here she takes on the standards of the day, mostly from Broadway musicals and adds a bit of her own unique style and salsa reggae flavor.
If she can make Conan the Barbarian take notice, she can easily warm your heart as she takes you back to the days when the hustle was the rage!
Grace Sets The Pace...Nice Debut!.......2006-07-05
Former fashion model Grace Jones became disco royalty with the release of 'Portfolio' in 1977, and the anthem 'Do Or Die' is a certified classic. The 1st side of the album features songs that are performed as a medley of sorts, and this is quite interesting. IMO 'Portfolio' borders on campy fun, but it is pretty interesting listening to Grace's take on a few standards (1. Send In The Clowns, 2. What I Did For Love, 3. Tomorrow, and 4. La Vie En Rose!!). Grace Jones brought something unique to the table back when Donna Summer & The Bee Gees ruled the Disco Universe, so give her the upmost credit for that. Following 'Portfolio', Grace released 'Fame' (1978) & 'Muse' (1979), which would complete her awesome DISCO TRILOGY of albums. Sadly, 'Fame' & 'Muse' are no longer in print, and you'd be lucky to have BOTH of these albums on a single CD (like me!). Hearing Grace's 1st 3 albums in succession illustrates her growth as an artist/singer, and remember, 'Portfolio' is only part of the story! Grace Jones fans deserve all 3 albums from 1977-1979, POINT BLANK!

Grace Jones-Disco Diva.......2006-06-09
'Portfolio' is Grace Jones's debut album. It is comprised of seven tracks-six of which are based in mid 70's broadway disco,in other words the covers of show tunes done up in a very campy, stereotypical cartoon disco style. Now the first three cuts are nothing but that-"Tomorrow" and "Send In The Clowns" are embarrassing songs done in an embarrassing way.The compisitions are well mixed by Tom Moulton. But Grace Jones is not a real singer-she has no range,a very awkward vibrato and is sometimes off key.The only thing she does have is a lot of soul and expressive power and that's about all that saves the first three songs from being pretty stupid. The next set of songs are much better-"La Vie En Rose",sung and spoken parcially in French is a pleasant loungey groove with a good arrangement and more of Grace's personality."Sorry",That's The Trouble" and "I Need A Man" are far more credible disco tunes with much better singing on Grace's part and much stronger compositions. You could enjoy "Portfolio" as a cusionary example of music-as camp or kitch if you'd like. But there are some elements towards the end that are very enjoyable and even though everything here is unashamadely dated to the extreme it's still a joy to hear some of it to bring back at least some happy little guilty pleasures.Mind you-this is also Grace's debut.
Strange, Grandiose and Uneven... .......2006-04-29
I must confess that her disco period never really grab me just like her other albums like Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing, Living My Life did. But, never the less, it's a great and fun listening; Grace is so much detached, totally disconnected from the rest of the world that you enjoy it even if she haven't find a way to use her very special and unconventional voice. It's no way near a masterpiece, far from being the greatest album of Grace but with "La Vie En Rose" onboard it gives a little something special... But I don't really recommend it to someone who's diving in Grace Jones.
SEND IN THE CLOWNS: Great opening, her voice does come to is limitation but the grandiose, Broadway style (yes I know it's a Broadway cover...) give the track enough pleasure to keep it to the end...
WHAT I DID FOR LOVE: ... Well now we are totally expose to the limitations of Grace's voice. It not a very good song but not a catastrophe, it's fairly produce but really the voice of Grace prevent it form being a standout.
TOMORROW: Fun track, again in this big grand, Broadway style (I know it's another Broadway cover). It's pleasurable, and totally detached from the rest of the album... A good track, not a classic, but so much fun to listen to.
LA VIE EN ROSE: Great, amazing, romantic, dreamy and so simple... It's odd to see that the simplest track on the album is the best. It has that little acoustic guitar with a little beat and relying totally on Grace vocals that are superb, simply stunning...
SORRY: Beautiful song but simply gets a bit repetitive by the end, Grace seems to be really at ease with her vocals...
THAT'S THE TROUBLE: Upbeat, danceable track that seems to get stuck in my mind and head each time I listen to it... It has a great production, confident Jones on the commands that really make the song shines.
I NEED A MAN: Greatly produce, direct but seems a bit flat after a couple of listening... It had a lot of popularity with the gay community at the time it was release but being a 16 years old straight guy, I think maybe the song just loose a bit of it's punch...
Grace Jones Portfolio.......2005-08-13
Great! A throwback to the early 80's. Grace is in fine form in this disco CD. I strongly recommend it!

Album Description
Listen. You can hear the lives and dreams of children from many cultures dancing through these bouncy international rhythms. Sarah's joyous songs touch the place inside that makes us strong and connects us to each other and to our wonderful, magical Earth. Dance along to "The Journey Dance" (a perfectly silly movement song that invites you to pretend you are dancing through peanut butter, applesauce and marshmallows); learn to "Talk It Out" (a catchy zydeco tune about making up after an argument with your best friend); visit the ocean and rainforest with "White Whales" (based on a true story) and the "Mahogany Tree"; meet and make friends with children from all over the world and learn about other cultures in the "Other Side of The World" and "Walls and Bridges". Magical Earth is a triple Award Winner. Ages 5 and up
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous -- Such wonderful music!.......2004-05-16
As with Sarah's other albums, this one is fabulous! My children and I know all the words to all the songs -- they stay in your heart. She writes about the environment, animals, conflict resolution. Perfect for children and adults alike -- my kids started really understanding at age 4 or 5. They are easy for children to sing and dance to, and are perfect for car rides, too.
AWESOME.......1999-07-28
My daughter listens to Sarah Pirtle a lot. We sing-a-long with the tape in the car and enjoy listening to it all of the time. Thank you Sarah for your wonderful inspriration and love that you bring out with your music.

Heaven in an album.......2000-03-31
Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones may "suffer" from having written one of the all-time greatest theatrical smash hits in "The Fantasticks" in that the remainder of their work (and it spans four decades) is often pushed to the wayside.
Yes, the two wrote more than "Try To Remember", and this album, featuring the two songwriters with three delightful backup vocalists takes the listener on an educational and entertaining journey through their career, with detours down some paths not taken, in the form of songs cut from shows or which were substantially reworked.
Highlights include Jones's remeniscing about Gower Champion calling with the idea for "I Do! I Do!", a selection of songs from "Celebration" (since the cast recording is long out of print, this is really the only commercial recording of any of the songs that I know of), and a couple of novelty numbers ("Mr. Off Broadway" could, with a name-change here or there, be just as topical now as when first written, despite Jones's comments, and "Wonderful Way to Die" from "The Bone Room" is an absolute hoot).
I saw Schmidt and Jones at the York theater, and this cast recording captures the charm and delight which this wonderful pair continues to bring to live musical theatre.
Entertaining record of their Off-Broadway revue.......1998-08-28
The music is enjoyable, and it is always a treat to hear composers perform their own work, but this isn't one that will be played over and over. The treats on this album are the songs not available on the original cast recordings of their works, but many of the songs are abbreviated into mere snippets (most of the selections from Celebration), and the material tends to be I DO, I DO heavy. I would have appreciated the inclusion of some of the music from PHILEMON, and more from BONE ROOM, and COLLETTE.
While not a perfect recording, the listener DOES get the sense that they are there in the theatre ( although the audience on the recording does react to many visuals which are of course lost to the listener), and not in a cold recording studio.

Adequate.......1999-02-18
Adequate, but far from complete sampler of Steeleye's career. The CD draws far to heavily from "Back In Line" (on of the band's weaker albums) while ignoring "Ten Man Mop" altogether. The music is fine, but there are far better Steeleye Span compilations available.

Great songs for kids and grownups.......2006-04-17
This is excellent music for children and parents. My 1 year old daughter loves to dance along to " Big Bad Wolf" and "BubbleBath", and just recently I overheard my wife singing along to "Colors". The songs just seem to stay with you throughout the day.
Sophisticated and Fun!.......2006-04-16
My kids and I love this CD! It is sophisticated and fun. I highly recommend it! My kids like to listen to it over and over and I actually like to as well, unlike most of the other kids music we have. We love all of the songs but our favorites are Colors, Sweets, and Bubble Bath!

It's a hit.......2006-11-27
We have several of her CD's and we love them. My son is 16mos old now and loves her music.
A wonderfully cheerful musical collection!.......2005-08-31
Our daughter absolutely LOVES these CDs (we also have Sing a Song of Seasons)! She did have the advantage of participating in Miss Rachel's music class for a week this summer and although she was rather shy in class, she dances and sings along to this music at home and in the car. It always brings a smile to her face and seems to have a calming and relaxing effect (both on the kids and parents!). In my opinion, a "must have" for those rainy afternoons spent indoors!
Hello Everybody! is a triple-award winner.......2001-11-21
Hello Everybody! Playsongs and Rhymes from a Toddler's World

My 3-Year-Old's Favorite.......2001-11-03
There's something about this folksy CD that grabbed my daughter's attention. It is the only CD she's wanted to hear since she first heard it. The songs are appropriate for babies as well as preschoolers, and are excellent "activity songs" as well. Buy it! You won't regret it! :o)
Outstanding Music For Young Children!.......2001-02-28
I'm sorry, but it doesn't get any better than this for young children. Rachel Buchman has a way of connecting with kids and engaging them in the music! This and "Sing a Song of Seasons" another of her albums are in constant rotation for our kids. They love to roll up in a ball like a pea, stretch up like a tree, and insert their own vegetables in the empty space for tht song. You'll see your children spontaneously singing and MOVING along to these songs, and that's why they're so good!
