There's nothing like a breakup to focus your muse. This follow-up to the stunning, multi-platinum Fallen was penned as singer Amy Lee's troubled romance with bandmate Ben Moody was spiraling out of control, impelling her to craft an anxious record full of recriminations, revelation, and self-flagellation, as she questioned everything that kept her whole. It's a fascinating journey for the listener as she ventures into her own personal heart of darkness, her stricken, perfect voice suspended on an unsteady precipice between breakdown and breakthrough. Despite the loss of two members, including guitarist Moody who left mid-tour in 2003, the album has a maturity, sophistication, and a singular vision that wasn't found in their earlier work. Stately and as exotic as Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, with its intricate instrumentation, disturbing imagery, and disembodied chorus, The Open Door shows exactly what this band is capable of. "Snow White Queen" is a goth-y alternative to Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," equally anthemic, but with much more grit and pain. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:
I expected something else!.......2007-08-01
The first time I heard Evanescence I thought 'Cool rock chick making it Linkin Park style'. But after I heard her first album I just saw that Evanescence may be called similar, but just the song Bring me to Life. Each and every song on their previous album is amazing, and the lyrics are just great.
Having that in mind I bought the album as soon as it got in Amazon for sale. What was my surprise when I found that every single attractive quality Evanescence added to Goth Metal was long gone, no more cool songs. The best songs in the album are Lythium and Call me when you're sober. But hey! What happened to the great lyric writting?. The other songs are just about deppresion and sadness, nothing new, no new perspective. Amy Lee is still what makes Evanescence speacial, but she definetly needs a new Metal rocker to help her to take her back on track.
You will like this album if you enjoy the band's singles or if you are a die-hard fan of Evanescence. Otherwise if you wish to listen to Evanesence music try the previous album. Again, a sad chapter in Metal History.
Disappointed.......2007-07-24
Wasnt as good as the first one, but its got a few decent songs on it .
...Wow.......2007-07-19
I've always heard of this group but never heard any of their songs until a few months ago. I heard Sweet Sacrifice. Going through a hard time with my boyfriend, it felt good that someone else was belting out my pain and frustration. I even downloaded some older songs later like Going Under and My Immortal (Okay, not a hard rock song but beautiful all the same).
Not as solid as previous efforts.......2007-07-17
This CD is not bad, but it does not reach the same level as 'Fallen'. There are some interesting musical ideas in evidence (such as Lacrymosa), but they do not quite succeed in execution (the obvious looping of the background Lacrymosa clip is extremely distracting.) Overall, the songs seem to lack a certain balance in execution that makes them both interesting and disappointing at the same time.
The best album ever?.......2007-07-16
The very best album in my rather extensive Rock collection, which goes back as far as Cream. Nothing less than outstanding from first note to last, it just goes to show that some of the best music every made is being produced today (albeit in smaller quantities than the '70's).
Strongly recommend buying all three Evanescence albums to date! With original albums like these, no need for a "Best of" compilation.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection in the Dino Style.......2005-07-15
If you like Dean Martin's style of singing, this is a nice collection. The CD is a reissue of two of his older albums. It includes some of his standards as well as some less well known pieces. The transfer is of good quality and so is the album.
AGAIN,ONE LESSER,ONE GOOD.......2003-10-19
THE DOOR IS STILL OPEN TO MY HEART is the lesser one with a few hits and a lot of fillers, and again a few songs from the country albums of 1963.The pleasant surprize is WE'LL SING IN THE SUNSHINE.REMEMBER ME is the good one ,in which DEAN has fun with some modern standards of the time. Also included are BUMMING AROUND,one of his national anthems,MY SHOES KEEP WALKING BACK TO YOU and WALK ON BY(both wonderful).DINO'S fans will love this LP.It is a perfect selection of songs for him.Wouldn't it have been nice if they had coupled all the good albums together and left the others with a stamp labeled LEFTOVERS-COLLECTORS ITEMS?
Takes Me Back.......2002-12-22
I'm 42 years old and my mom was a die-hard Dino fan. Of all Dean's albums threse two were her favorite. We listened to them right through the Seventies. My brother found this CD in the music store and played it for me yesterday. Even though I hadn't listened to either album in many years I could still sing along with Dean right off the bat. It really took me back. My mom played these on an endless loop when we drove to Florida for our family vacation . . . . an avocado-green '73 Mercury Colony Park station wagon with faux wood-grain side-panels, cruising south, doing 80 on I-65 with Dino crooning on the eight track. That was livin'! Dean is enjoying a burst of popularity right now and deservedly so. The man had pipes and the coolest attitude of any pop singer. One of the only guys I'm not embarrassed to sing along with. This CD is a MUST for all Dino devotees. Not a weak track anywhere on either album. If you're new to Dino, this is the best place to start your collection. Go for it!
The Door Is Still Open/I'm The One Who Loves You.......2002-04-08
Dean Martin, one of the finest and most soothing pure vocalists of all time, is back on the market as the entire "Reprise" collection finally makes its way onto compact disc. At age 22, I'm perhaps one of Dino's youngest fans but by no means one of his least enthusiastic. This disc which comprises the albums "And The Door Is Still Open To My Heart" and "Remember Me, I'm The One Who Loves You" has been remastered beautifully and is pure pleasure to listen to for its duration of just over an hour. These albums are two of Dino's very best at Reprise, perhaps even of his entire career. Dean sings each and every song in his own unmistakable style and makes you feel that you've never heard them before he crooned them (even "Red Roses for a Blue Lady", a song I have ALWAYS hated). Giovanni's review covers all the territory I would have covered if he didn't beat me to the punch : ) Fans and collectors out there...Buy This CD!
ANOTHER GREAT COLLECTION FROM DINO.........2002-02-17
and the good people at Collector's Choice Music. The loyal masses who have long suffered and waited for Dean's Reprise albums will wait no longer; they're all available now! Here are two of Dean's gold albums on one fine CD. Riding the wave of the hugely popular "Hit Sound" from arranger/conductor Ernie Freeman and producer Jimmy Bowen, Dean undertook these two albums with full force. The first, the "DOOR IS STILL OPEN" sides, find Dean making wonderful music on the title track, not to mention his take on a popular song of the day, "WE'LL SING IN THE SUNSHINE", which seems tailor made to fit his easy swingin' approach (the original was considerably more folksy, and thus, not quite as happy-go-lucky as Dean's) The "sing-a-long" motif behind the country-tinged "CLINGING VINE" is classic Dean; as is the tender yet driving ballad "ALWAYS TOGETHER". The "REMEMBER ME" sides are just as wonderful, especially Dean's take on the Roger Miller hit "KING OF THE ROAD". Also included here is Dean's TV Theme song, "WELCOME TO MY WORLD". More covers here with Dean's own indelible stamp on them: "BORN TO LOSE" (immortalized by Ray Charles) and even the Donny Osmond semi hit "THE BIRDS AND THE BEES" as only Dean could deliver! THIS, my friends is, as Dino would say, AMORE. Original liner notes and album artwork included from the people at Collector's Choice. There are 11 other such volumes like this...get'em all!

Customer Reviews:
Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

DECENT.......2004-06-14
IF IT WASN'T FOR MAFIA AND FLUXY ON THE TRACKS, THIS CD WOULD BE PLAIN BORING. THE ARRANGEMENT ON ALL THE SONGS FROM THIS UNDERATED BRIT DUO IS CLASSIC. THE ONE COMPLAINT WITH NON-REGGAE LOVERS IS THAT REGGAGE IS STAGNANT, NO GROWTH. THE BEATS ARE THE SAME. HOWEVER, HERE ON GREGORY'S LATEST ALBUM, MAFIA AND FLUXY PROVES THEM WRONG. ON "HAVE I SINNED", WHICH IS THE STAND OUT TRACK ON THIS OPUS, MAFIA AND FLUXY PROVES THAT CURRENT REGGAE CAN BE FRESH AND INNOVATIVE. CHECK OUT THE NEATLY PLACED CHRISTMAS BELL AND THE ADDITIONAL KEYBOARDS IN THE CHORUS. UNFORTUNATELY THE COOL RULER'S VOCAL ARRANGEMENT ON ALL THE SONGS ON THIS ALBUM SOUNDS THE SAME ON ALL OF HIS PREVIUOS WORK. STILL A GREAT BUY. COP IT!!! ALSO CHECK OUT MAFIA AND FLUXY'S WORK ON BOB ANDY'S NEW JOINT WHEN IT DROPS. ONE LOVE!!!

Nice little collection of one of rhythm and blues pioneer groups.......2006-04-06
In the late 1940's and the early 1950's the streetcorners of the Baltimore/DC area were alive with aspiring young singers determined to make their mark in the music business. The region was developing its own unique sound which combined elements of gospel, blues and pop. Major record companies in New York began to take notice and several of these groups were rewarded with recording contracts. In 1951, a five man pop group from Baltimore that called themselves The Mellotones inked a contract with Atlantic records. Since the so-called "bird" group names were all the rage at the time Atlantic decided to change the name of the group to the Cardinals. Under the watchful eye of Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson Atlantic would make the decision to change the groups primary style from pop to R&B. It was a decision that would work to the benefit of everyone involved. For the next five years the Cardinals would become one of Atlantic's best selling acts. Now in 2006 Collectables has assembled 10 of the Cardinals finest Atlantic sides in a great new disc entitled "The Door Is Still Open". As far as I can tell, this is the first Cardinals collection ever to appear on CD in the United States.
To be honest about it "The Door Is Still Open" is strictly a low-priced no-frills compilation. But I will take it. This disc replaces several 45's in my collection. And what a fine collection it is! Some may find this music to be somewhat dated but I have always been a fan of the music of this period. What's not to like about the groups 1955 hit "Come Back My Love"? Great tune. Perhaps my favorite tune in the package is the spellbinding ballad "Here Goes My Heart To You". I have always enjoyed the groups take on the Kay Starr classic "The Wheel of Fortune" and can highly recommend the title track "The Door Is Still Open". One of the drawbacks of this collection is that it only offers a total of ten tracks. I gladly would have paid a bit more for a few more songs and some meaningful liner notes.
While the Cardinals never quite attained the popularity of a pair of other Baltimore/DC groups, namely The Orioles and the Clovers they were nevertheless a very important act from that era. Kudos to Collectables for finally bringing these tunes to CD! If you are a fan of R&B vocal groups or doo wop then this one would certainly be a nice addition to your collection. Recommended!

Refreshing & Highly Spirited Music.......2004-03-24
This is one of the first traditional Irish groups I discovered and has remained my #1 favorite ever since. I dare say, if I had to select only one Irish CD to represent the joy and spirit of this country, this would be that CD. The music created by the instruments, Uillean pipes, accordion, whistles, flute, clarinet, harp, keyboard, percussion, guitar, bouzouki, and vocals, both male and female, are difficult to describe in words. It makes me think of "River Dance", the show, which may well have taken a few lessons from "Sean Nua". The milieu and ambience of this famous production often resembles the music on this CD. There are jigs, reels, highly evocative and soul searching melodies and songs, as well as a few romping and raucously amusing music. I am at a loss for superlatives to describe just how much this music lifts my spirits. This is definitely happy music and listening to it will revitalize the listener. This music can make anyone listening feel the experience described in, track #1 a) "Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part", b) Cliffs of Mohr, c) Eaves Dropper". Some other highly enjoyable tunes are, #5, O' Ro' Song of the Sea, a very sensitive and ethereal tune, and #6, a) The Tabby Reel, b) Young Joe -- a dynamic and energetic combo. If happy, "feel good" music is what you are after ... go no farther than this CD. It is all here. My highest recommendations. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Cerquetti's Abigaille.......2003-09-06
First off, it should be known to the potential buyer that these are HIGHLIGHTS only. The mono sound is acceptable. Orchestra and chorus are average at best. The focus clearly is on Anita Cerquetti and her rendition of Abigaille. Even though in the booklet listing of tracks her name is omitted on the last cue point. I never heard this singer live. My first encounter with her voice was the studio GIOCONDA with del Monaco and Simionato and I liked it very much. As Abigaille I find her less convincing. The voice is beautiful and even. But she cannot convey Abigaille's high flying ambitions. She sounds noble most of the time. Never aggressive or infuriated or spiteful or menacing. Her repentance/dying scene is superficial. Which makes me wonder how often Miss Cerquetti may have had the chance to sing this role during her brief career and develop a feeling for it. At times she unexpectedly breaks a phrase to catch her breath, which I find somewhat irritating. And some climax seem "rushed". It's also a bit disappointing to me that the "Salgo gia" cabaletta gets no repeat. Guess such were the customs in those years, even for concert performances. I am pleased with Messrs. Dondi (in the title role) and Trama. Aside from their vocal qualities I find them very much in character. Also the singers of Fenena and Ismaele made me prick up my ears. Taken all in all, it's worthwhile to have this document. It will nicely supplement your studio NABUCCO. It's been a guilty pleasure of mine to compare Anita Cerquetti to Elena Suliotis and Dino Dondi to Tito Gobbi. And I wish that one day the Metropolitan Opera's NABUCCO with Leonie Rysanek under the baton of Thomas Schippers will appear on CD.
Good soloists, mediocre chorus, mono recording.......2002-10-24
The soloists are very good, but the chorus (key in this opera) is not on the same level. "Va Pensiero", the famous chorus piece, is very weakly done. The mono recording is only just adequate, OK for the soloists but flat and dull for stage presence and orchestration.
Blistering Vocalism.......2001-02-23
I first heard this rare pearl over 20 years ago on some faded third-generation cassette. Despite the dim sonics, I was thrilled to hear a diva who could actually negotiate the scorching roulades of Abigaille's music while still sounding like a singer and not some wounded forest creature howling in pain. Apart from Callas' live performance, we've had precious little to celebrate in recorded Abigailles. Sure, Scotto lit a few fires with her EMI pressing, but who wouldn't with a microphone clenched betweeen her teeth and the volume control nailed in place at the top of the control panel? For Heaven's sake, most of the current generation of half-wit dimpled divettes and "sound-enhanced" melody muffins could come off like an Abigaille with the right studio wizards calling the shots.
Cerquetti was the REAL thing. Like Margharita Roberti (listen to her in Christoff's ATTILA recording), Caterina Mancini and Fedora Barbieri, she came from a school of barnstormers who could shake the foundations of San Carlo or La Scala with truly schooled, crafted voices that emanated from the viscera and not the top of the larynx. Cerquetti was one of the Queens of Can Belto, and this new release in great sound is one of the treasures among re-releases of the past decade. I cast aside all conservatory terminology and call this type of performance a ripsnorter for the ages. With Callas, Cerquetti, and Dimitrova on disc, and the rare likes of Linda Roark-Strummer performing the role onstage, the other studio bunnies can turn their attention to gentler repertoire and give the rest of us a break.
Glorious Cerquetti in very good Nabucco.......2000-07-19
With the exception of the famous Hebrew's choir 'Va pensiero', the number of recordings of 'Nabucco' is notably low. One possible reason is the extraordinary vocal demand of the female leading role, King Nabucco's daughter Abigaille. Very few sopranos have succeeded with this difficult role: Maria Callas, Elena Suliotis, Renata Scotto, Ghena Dimitrova (arguably the best). Now we have a live recording of the great Italian soprano Anita Cerquetti, and she is probably so good as Dimitrova. Cerquetti was one of the greatest sopranos of the century, although she had an astonishingly short carreer (she retired at the age of 30!). Most of her (scarce) recordings are live performances, so having any single piece of recording of her extraordinary voice is a real must. This Nabucco was one of the last documents of her operatic carreer, and here she sounds so splendid that it remains a mystery why she decided to give up singing so soon afterwards. The rest of the cast is very good, especially the bass Ugo Trama as the High Priest Zaccaria. Dino Dondi is a good Nabucco, but his interpretation of the title role is not a reference. The orchestra sounds well, and the choir efficiently provides the necessary support. The quality of sound is good for the time (1960). To Summarize: This incredibly low priced recording has an adequate combination of the elements needed for a good Nabucco: A very good choir, an excellent bass (Trama), a good baritone (Dondi) and a star of stars as princess Abigail: the great soprano Anita Cerquetti. Enjoy it!
