Customer Reviews:
Holy smokes! FEAR is best consumed live and this radio set rules!.......2005-12-29
I love FEAR. Have since I first heard them about 1980. As great as their records are, they have failed to ever capture the unbelievable power and pleasure of their live set in the studio. So, here's the solution: live in the radio studio.
This has all their early best songs, a virtual greatest hits live.
They also released a live in Portland record and it's also lively and has the humor between songs from Mr. Lee Ving and the piledriver delivery of their music along with those wacky lyrics.
Every punk I ever knew at least knew of FEAR and most thought they were awesome, especially if they'd seen them. I saw them in 1986 and assumed they were already done. No way, they blazed. Saw them at the Flipside benefit at the El Rey theatre in Hollywood in 2001. They virtually stole the show from the other incredible late 70's L.A. punk bands, although the SCREAMERS, CIRCLE JERKS/WEIRDOS (doin' 3 old BLACK FLAG classic covers with Keith Morris singing: ah, a pinnacle of punk perfection) and the ADOLESCENTS and the 2 man MINUTEMEN did not disappoint either.
Saw them in like 2003 or something and let's just say it was kinda scary, they drew a tough crowd, one guy was dragged out by the many bouncers totally lifeless it appeared. Lee Ving seemed like, well, like his dad might look like. Course, I do too now that I'm an old punk of 51. I gotta give him credit for still gettin' up there.
Meanwhile, this album is a must have for all punx. If you own any of FEAR's regular studio albums and like them at all, you gotta get this record cuz it's them with their real sound, the satire, the very clear recording thanks to bein' recorded at the radio station and it was done back in the 80's when they had their yoot. Get it. Right now. chrisbct@hotmail.com
Fear at their best.......2004-08-26
The first time I ever heard Fear was seeing them on a re-run of Saturday Night Live when I was quite young and I was immediately drawn in by the speed, sloppyness, humor and energy (hell, they brought their own punks with them).
Needless to say, this was the obvious choice for my first Fear record and it is hands down the best. It is a bit of a bummer that they had to clean it up for the radio broadcast, but the songs have so much more of the raw energy that lacks on their over-pollished studio albums (first two are still really good though). And if you've never seen the Decline of Western Civilization, their set is amazing and their audience abuse is side splitting.
Their Best.......2003-06-23
This album sounds so much better than their earlier studio material. Plus all the good songs are here. This is a great live album with some humorous banter thrown in. As a side note, Flea from the Chili Peppers was in the band at this time.
Fear Live.......2002-07-13
I just saw Fear last night- Jan. 23, 2004, for the first time, and despite being afraid at first... I must say it was a blast, and as shows tend to go, I was reminded what it was I like so much about all these songs. The songs on this album were played with the same fist-pumping greatness as they were last night, and that's excellent for both the album and the fact that it was Fear still kicking out what the BYOW drummer would put in terms, a "tight sound." The only problem with the show last night is Fear didn't play long enough of a set since shows in Tempe have to end at 12:00 I think, while the set on this record goes a ways past 12:00. The slight problem with this album is that is was intended for an L.A. radio show, and so the band held back from swearing and censored themselves a little, while if you really did go out and see them, theres gonna be some swearing, and that's part of the songs. You've got "I don't care about you..." and you know what is said next, but they leave it for you to fill in the blank. There it is. Now I'll be "lee ving" this for you to decide if you really need this or to just go with the studio versions, which, in my opinion, are highly inferior to these great, tighter-packed, faster, and overall better versions of the great songs in the Fear catalog.

Fear - Word Up !!!!!.......2002-04-19
This is one great live album. The only bad thing is the guy who did the editing, did a pretty bad job - songs are slopped together but the hidden gem on this record is Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's his only album with Fear. Derf Scratch is missed but hey, you get Flea. John Belushi was right - Fear was one of the greatest bands out of L.A., This album is no "Record" but it's great if you love Fear. I wish they would reunite with Derf Scratch but that will never happen. Anyway, try it - you'll like it.
I LOVE LIVING IN THE CITY..........2001-12-27
I bought this cd and I tell ya, it's great. It also happens to be Fear's only live album so if you want to here how they do their best songs live then this is for you. New York's alright if your a saxaphone!

Politics and staying power - a rare combination!.......2000-08-17
Live albums don't usually stay in my rotation for too long, and only the best overtly political material stays fresh in my experience. So I'm surprised at how much I still like "Live For the Record" after nearly four years. As you know if you've been to a Tom Paxton concert in recent years, he starts off his concerts with what he calls "short shelf-life" songs - brief songs about current events that are, in his own words, "of diminishing interest to us all." This disc opens with a clutch of such songs on mid-1990s people and events such as Lorena Bobbitt, Bob Packwood and the 104th Congress; they do sound dated now, but they're still good for a laugh. More seriously, "On the Road to Sribinica" is the most positively haunting of the few Bosnia songs I've heard; this alone is worth the price of the disc. From there, Paxton switches back and forth with remarkable ease from the serious to the sentimental to the hilarious, a skill which has always been his strongest point as a songwriter and performer. His band is in fine form throughout the show; it's often hard to believe this was a live recording! There are great renditions of most of his classics ("The Last Thing on my Mind," "Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound," "Ramblin' Boy") as well as his trademark lovesongs ("Dance in the Kitchen," "You Are Love") and satire ("Modern Maturity" and an updating of "What Did You Learn in School?" that never fails to make my Republican friends angry!) If I have one criticism of this collection, it is that Paxton seems to draw only from his earliest works and his most recent ones for his concerts. He made an awful lot of great music in the midst of his career that is not in evidence at all here, but that doesn't take away from the first rate job he does on the songs he has chosen. Along with the Elektra Years compilation, this is probably the most essential single Paxton album.

Customer Reviews:
More please!.......2005-01-06
This is the 2nd volume of Frank Hewitt discs from Smalls Records. Take a look at my review of the first (_We Loved You_) for some of the background & a thumbnail of Hewitt's piano playing. In brief: Hewitt was a highly original bebop pianist who was something of an underground legend in New York but never got the chance to release a record during his lifetime. (The only exception was his very brief appearance on _Live at Smalls_, an Impulse compilation which more or less sidelined him.) Since his death Luke Kaven of Smalls Records has been busy trying to secure him posthumous fame by finally releasing the few sessions that Hewitt recorded in his lifetime.
_Not Afraid to Live_ is Hewitt's last session, though he still sounds just fine on it despite the short time remaining to him. The bassist is his usual bassist Ari Roland, while the drummer is the great Louis Hayes, who had not worked with him before. The session is a considerable contrast to _We Loved You_: the repertoire has more of a boppish slant--"Manteca" & "Night in Tunisia" turn up in the setlist--& the tempos are mostly up, sometimes _very_ up. The session has its rough edges: Hayes seems intrigued but not quite on Hewitt's wavelength, & it's pretty obvious that Hewitt simply launched into the tunes without much advance discussion or arrangement. So, for instance, on "Just One of Those Things", he starts with a slow, rhapsodic unaccompanied opening, then shifts into a ferociously fast gear for the head--but Hayes doesn't follow suit, coming in on brushes at a more moderate tempo, so there's a little negotiation before the players lock in & just blow (it's actually a terrific performance despite the rough spot). On "What's New" Hayes seems bemused that Roland insists on playing in two the whole time, & at several points tries to nudge things into doubletime or a brisker walk, but no-one takes him up on it. These are all things that could have been cleared up by an extra take or two but I assume this isn't what happened in the studio.
So it takes a couple listens to get past the occasionally glitchy surface of the music. If you do that, though, you'll find this just as fascinating a window on Hewitt's music as the first CD. The prize plums here are a tremendous "I'll Remember April" (quite fast--nothing like the version on the first CD), "Just One of Those Things", & an especially fierce "Manteca". Hewitt's playing is almost alarmingly double-or-nothing--even on a fast tune he favours doubletime runs--& it's about as far away from the smooth virtuosity of much mainstream jazz piano as you can get..... but despite the fratured surface he's always on top of things--walk-in-the-park relaxed & in the pocket. It's a very personal wrong-right style of playing: even the familiar themes of the bebop tunes get reworked with pointed off-notes & strange harmonies.
I'd still suggest that listeners unacquainted with Hewitt go to _We Loved You_ first: it's a little ballad-heavy, but the band is completely sympatico with him there. But if you like that one, then needless to say you'll want more. I gather there's still more Hewitt in the can, including a live gig--I hope it's not long before these see the light of day.

Album Description
Acoustic in New York is a collection of 10 previously unreleased songs Ed Hale recorded as demos while in New York City in late 1995. The songs were recorded live to a two-track as record company demos only and were never meant for public release. Although the sound quality of the recordings themselves is less than perfect - evidenced by the honking of car horns and the ringing telephones in the background - the power and the passion that comes through as Ed sings and plays each song has a tremendous impact and tells a lot about the artist in the peak of his craft as a guitar player and as a singer/songwriter. There is an ambition and a hunger and a passion that pours out of his voice and guitar on these tracks that is breathtaking. And so it was that this collection was put together as a compendium of some of Ed Hale's most complex and intricate compositions during this particular time period the anthemic I'm so fucking bored is almost 10 minutes long. More than anything else this collection showcases the versatility of Ed Hale as the songwriter and illustrates the ease with which he can spin a great song. It highlights the start of the open tuning phase of his guitar playing and song writing style, where the songs take on an almost orchestral tone, with long and lush instrumental introductions before the vocals are even introduced. It provides an intimate environment in which to soak up some of the paradise spilling all over us when Ed Hale sings some of his best songs ever. His voice is the strongest it has ever been on record. And there is an optimism that comes through in most of the songs that is entirely different than his previous work with Broken Spectacles. Many of the songs are uplifting and spiritual in nature, such as The Greatest Gift and Promised Land. The longest song on the album, the Dylanesque Rooms of My Mind, is another standout track, and like the album as a whole, it is raw soul-music, pure expressive poetry set to music on a six-string. Acoustic in New York is a deep and heartfelt exploration of the soul of the artist as a young man in one brief moment in a tiny studio in New York City.
Customer Reviews:
The transitional Ed Hale album out on a limb and all on his own still holds up strong.......2006-12-23
Acoustic in New York is hard to fully fathom now because it seems so far away from the Ed Hale we know today from TRANSCENDENCE. Recorded in 1996 when Hale was just getting his wings back after departing from longtime bandmates in Broken Spectacles, Ed had just begun to fly solo again. After almost ten years, it is surprising how well this soft, almost-whisper of a collection of acoustic songs holds up. Especially since its initial release, Hale's new band TRANSCENDENCE has covered a few of the songs on this disc and turned them inside out. As always strong melodies are a plenty. Vocals still a bit 'worbly' compared to how he sings now; but one hardly notices. Instead what you find is that you are almost immediately sucked into the ethereal spiritual and orchestral pathos and beauty of the album. It is a very passionate work. A transitional work. Ed was flying between bands, out on his own, still hunting down the songs as the eternal songwriter that he is at his core. It is also important to note that not only was it his last album of the nineties, he didn't release another album for almost six years until the TRANSCENDENCE debut RISE AND SHINE. For this, it is a treasure. When all is said and done, and Hale has finally burned out his infinite curiosity for genre-skipping, varietal-dabbling, and musical experimentaion, ACOUSTIC IN NEW YORK will still be there to remind us why he is such an important artist and why we love him so much. Good songs. Great passion. And an innocence and spiritual essence underneath it all that speaks leagues more than loud guitars and crashing drums ever could.
INCREDIBLE.......2005-09-10
The rare moments when I hear music like this are when my actively suppressed desire to be a musician completely overpowers me. I don't think I ever heard an artist manifest so much raw passion. The primordial vibrations pouring out of his voice and the beautifully soothing strum of the guitar involuntarily make you instantly connect to either him or what he's saying.
Acoustic in New York is like a storybook, an uninhibited, poignant narrative of one of his (or whomever's) evolutionary stages in life. Bored, the first track, expresses a restlessness and deep yearning for something meaningful in life. For purpose. For the unordinary. The next song unveils an otherworldly, altruistic dedication to better humanity. As if carrying the weight of the entire planet on his shoulders is the solution to alleviating his boredom or restlessness. Interspersed amidst this altruism (...Take my hand / Every woman every man / I'll lead you to the Promised Land) are snippets of his experiences with love, narrated in such a way that you wonder how a 25-year-old could possibly have acquired so much wisdom about life, love, and happiness. (I especially like the quite reflective Paris.) There's also a playful, sultry side, Cool Rider, in case you start to wonder if he's always so intense.
Although the album emits an overall message of optimism, if you listen closely, you can detect a subtle haunting strain hovering in the background. It becomes more evident toward the latter half (Stay) and quite obvious at the end (Rooms of My Mind) in which he tears away the final layer protecting his vulnerability, grappling with how to come to terms with a mind-boggling swirl of confusing identities. It's as if he realizes that if he decides to take it upon himself to be everyone's savior, then there's no one to save him: Jesus if you please don't let me fall to pieces anymore / I'm somewhere in my head / I might as well be dead.
There is no solution to this realization. His plea, "...can't you see that / I'm no ordinary guy?", brings him right back to where he started on Bored: I just can't believe that I'm stuck in this hell [once more].
This is my favorite of his CDs; it's hard to not repeat the album description.... His lyrics are the creation of an incredible genius (e.g., "spilling paradise all over each other" - Promised Land) and the way he plays the guitar is completely mesmerizing, captivating. It's difficult for me to describe his music, but the instant he starts to play, you know that you're listening to a master. I don't know how he does it. He reminds me of Bob Dylan--but the sound is different. More alive. More real. An ever present beat, like subconsciously being aware of your own heart beating.
I really don't think you can go wrong buying Acoustic in New York.
Ed Hale shines through on this solo work!.......2003-12-20
I first heard Ed Hale on Rise and Shine and immediately fell in love with his voice and music, hence, got the album Acoustic in NY. This is a solo album with Ed Hale & his guitar, singing from his heart & soul. He carries the album so beautifully on his own that I sometimes cannot believe he is doing it solo. Ed Hale's guitar playing is magnificent, ... I love the eastern style guitar strumming he does at the beginning of Bored(#1) and end of Paris(#4). There is such depth in the lyrics ... inspirational as in Promised Land & The Greatest Gift, romantic in Paris & Jelly Role and plain magnificent in Rooms of my mind and Bored. Adjectives that come to my mind describing this album are: honest, real, vulnerable, and reachable. This is an unpolished and raw work of a truely creative artist, an awesome demonstration of Ed Hale's talent as a true musician, his voice, his lyrics, his music and guitar playing.
