Album Description

A collection of interesting original tunes that are performed in a good, hard-driving way and played both in and with the structure of traditional Southern fiddle music. A coherent suite of tunes, cinematically evoking varied moods and places.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superlatives fail me..........2003-04-10

On a scale of 1 - 10, this album just plain runs way off of the scale! I'll say at the outset: you won't find anything even vaguely neutral in this review. Well, yes, you don't know me and I don't know you, so it's hard to know if you can trust me. But this CD is such an intoxicatingly profound statement of creativity, that I suggest you just take the gamble and LUNGE for it!

OK, so I am an old-time fiddler, but I like a wide variety of music, and this collection has a broad base of appeal for anyone who likes acoustic music. The first tune is a fresh spin on a traditional tune: Sail Away Ladies. However Molly Tennenbaum's luscious banjo opening provides a tantalizing appetizer of what is to follow. By the time this tune melts into the first of Mark's creations, you'll be hooked. The compositions keep unfolding with a freshness and variety of rhythms that runs far afield of traditional music, and poses the dilemma of being clearly new yet always seeming almost familiar.

It's truly an all-star cast of traditional musicians that blend into an extraordinarily fluid sound as different instruments weave in and out. Fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, piano, flute, and a variety of special sounds provide a tapestry that is complex, and yet never over powering. The melodies are intricate and well crafted with deft but unexpected twists and turns. Just as you think you've got it, a fresh variation emerges to delight you. The chord progressions provide a setting which is the sonic equivalent of a roller-coaster ride.

Most of the tunes are strung together into medleys of two or three that seem to follow so approriately that they seem like movements of a symphony. Yet the dates in the liner notes make it clear that they were written at over a fairly wide period.

When this CD is over, I always find myself going back to the beginning to hear it again. And now, I'm hooked on learning all the chords for guitar and working out the fiddle parts just for the pleasure of admiring the craftsmanship, as you would run your hand appreciatingly over the curves of a scupture in a museum (when the guard isn't looking).

OK, I'll stop here. I sincerely hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic music...hard to believe they are not signed!.......2003-06-06

WOW! Wonderful music. A top-notch album that is an extraordinary blend of styles and energy. I would recommend this album to everyone, without reservation.

The quality of the album rivals the best that I've heard from pro studios.

Attic Down is a very unique band. A breath of fresh air!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Band!!.......2003-04-30

I saw this band in Charleston, WV and was amazed by what I heard. Not only is the music great, but the bandmembers are great. One of them gave a me a cd, and it is awesome. The songs are so full of emotion and has so many different textures. The musicianship of the rhythmn section is so tight. This is definitly a cd worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars An indi band truly worthy of praise!.......2003-04-11

Think Peter Gabriel. Think Tool. Think Pink Floyd. Think Radiohead. Think The Cure. Now throw all of your pre-conceptions out! Attic Down is what modern radio needs. This unique band is able to transform mood and emotion into a sonic tapestry that embodies originality and aural quality. Weaving eastern influences with orchestral lushness and powerful rhythm, Attic Down builds upon themes of modern life struggle and triumph and presents difficult topics in a poetic way. Tunes such as the powerful "Nothing At All" pounds away with a hypnotic rhythm that draws the listener in. The jazz/funk/rock "Crooked Tree" makes use of a simulated marimba to lay down chunky, funky rhythms that are only contained by the formidable vocal melody. The guitars on Attic Down's self-titled album weave in and out with one another, like a sonic dance, while the powerful vocal melodies fill the space with emotion and style. The quality of the bass is astounding, while the drums pound away ala Dave Matthews Band. Attic Down is able to draw on many musical influences in order to create a truly unique sound that defies categorization. Call it what you will, but one thing is apparent - Attic Down is one of the best, unsigned bands in this great country! I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of this great album...before they hit it big!!!

      Album Description

Blending snappy pop and folk rock with lyrics on the upbeat and poignant side, Miss Kristin's sweet voice has a unique timbre, with inflections nodding towards a mix of Natalie Merchant, Ann Wilson and maybe a bit of Juice Newton. Solidly unpretentious and enjoyable music.

      5 out of 5 stars A highly enjoyable album.......2001-04-27

This album is a wonderful collection of songs by a group that immediately reminds you of Peter, Paul, and Mary. I'm betting they get told that all the time, but there really is the similarity. Some of the best songs are not those which Amazon provides cuts of, for example, "You Fall in Love with a Rich One Just as Easy." The songs and the singing are just wonderful. I recommend it to anyone.
