Though Ian Hunter hit his popular peak in the 1970s, as the frontman for Mott the Hoople and with solo favorites such as "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Cleveland Rocks," fans who have followed his career ever since will find him in fine form here. Co-produced by Hunter and Andy York (guitarist for John Mellencamp), the album mixes the hard-crunching rock 'n' roll, literate lyricism, bittersweet balladry, and self-deprecating humor that have long marked Hunter's best work. Musically, both "Stretch" and the piano-driven "How's Your House" have the dynamics of Mott (though the latter was inspired by the aftermath of Katrina), while "When the World Was Round" and "I Am What I Hated When I Was Young" find Hunter in older-and-wiser mode. After "Brainwashed" attacks consumer culture with a feverish immediacy, Hunter finds soul-stirring redemption in "Guiding Light." --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars This CD Rocks!!!.......2007-07-30

To paraphrase another fine british Rocker, Graham Parker: Ian Hunter's new CD "Shrunken Heads", "rocks like a safari chimp!" I don't think there's a bad track on the whole disc. Ian's biting wit, strong arrangements, and even stronger vocals remind me of his heydays with Mott the Hoople, as well as his early solo discs from the 80s. It's difficult to believe this guy is pushing 70! Listen to "Fuss About Nothin'", "Brainwashed", or any song on this disc, and ask yourself why there isn't more of this kind of rock on radio today? More's the pity...
This CD belongs on anyone's top 10 discs of the year. Better yet, go to ianhunter.com, and let Ian himself know what you think of the disc. A fine effort, and please Mr. Hunter, let's have more like this!

5 out of 5 stars Ian's Righteous Return .......2007-07-17

This collection of songs blew me away! Every song is fantastic! He's like a young man but with the experience of 68 years of livin'. Excellent lyrics and music (Ian composed both). It's a tour de force. I want to be taking whatever Ian Hunter is taking. He's living proof age is only a number. He is more alive and vital on these songs than artists one-third his age. Shrunken Heads is a rollicking, driving, ROCKIN' CD. My compliments to the artist who always KNEW Cleveland Rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Good rock n roll.......2007-07-16

This is the first Ian Hunter CD that I have bought. I think it's very good for new music. It has even inspired me to check out some old Mott the Hoople stuff.

5 out of 5 stars One Of the Boys.......2007-07-15

Like many of you, we were turned on to Ian and Mott the Hoople in 1974. I will never forget it. They produced some of the most melodic rock of the years 1974-1976. We had a large group from Philadelphia at St. Joe's College that rallied around Hunter. This is indeed an extraordinary album. It is incredible to believe he is in his late sixties. I believe "Soul of America" would be an incredible smash hit for any of the top artists today. It is indeed a shame that only those of us left from that era will get to appreciate this masterpiece. Here's to all of you who realize how good "One of the Boys" was, especially as a live song. Hunter said: "this is what we're all about"... Amen!

5 out of 5 stars Ian's still the best..........2007-07-03

Ian Hunter is still the greatest. His song writing is impeccable. His delivery is right on the money & engaging. He's topical. He's current. He rocks, & still lays out a Helluva groove. I love this album so much, that I bought & sent copies to several friends.

There's always been something a little mysterious about Gomez. Yet no one would mistake them for a dream-pop or shoegazer act. The UK quintet relies too much on acoustic instrumentation (violin, mandolin, harmonica, etc.) and rocks too hard to qualify. In fact, they've never been part of any "scene," British or otherwise. Their debut for Dave Matthews's ATO label, after live set Out West, isn't an about-face and it's unlikely fans will feel betrayed by the shift, but it does represent the most direct expression of their artistry yet. It's as if they peeled away a layer or two in order to reveal more of the pop band beneath the off-kilter country-rock trappings. No doubt producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters) was an invaluable aid in that process: vocals are cleaner, arrangements tighter, mood more upbeat. How We Operate, their fifth studio recording, is Gomez on "Girlshapedlovedrug," (to name one of the more arresting tracks). Overall, it's a more cohesive effort than 2004's underrated Split the Difference. On the downside, there's more filler, like "Woman! Man!" with its "Sha-la-la-la woman!/Sha-la-la-la man!" chorus. Catchy? Definitely. Deep? Not so much... but Gomez has earned the right to let their inner Monkees come out to play. Plus, on the sprightly "Cry on Demand," they make fun of their "serious" image ("Boo-hoo/boo-hoo"), proving that this is one band that knows exactly how they operate. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Could not get this CD home fast enough...........2007-06-17

I found out about this group after hearing the song "How we Operate" on the movie "The Hitcher". I ended up buying this CD for my brother and kept listening to it over and over. I decided to buy my own and give him his back. Even though "How to Operate" is my favorite song, there are lots of really good songs and this CD was well worth taking the plunge.

4 out of 5 stars Gomez is worth listening to, especially when Ben is singing........2007-03-18

If it were only Ben singing, probably would have gotten 5 stars.

I love half this disc; the other half is mediocre. The half I love are all the songs sung by Ben Ottewal. (There is one song that he doesn't lead on that I like fairly well called Charley Patton Songs.)
Ben Ottewal has a deep, gravelly voice similar to David Gray or Tom Waits. His sound lends a more edgy feel to the tunes he sings, such as Chasing Ghosts with Alcohol, See The World, All too Much, How we Operate, and Tear your Love Apart. These all stand up to repeated listening.

However, numbers such as Girlshaped LoveDrug sound like the Beatles but less inventive and annoying. Reminds me of Robbie Williams, even though I can tolerate some Robbie Williams. Ben Ottewal's voice, on the other hand, is singular and shines. Ben's voice suits the music well; that's my opinion.

Gomez has a compelling sound when Ben Ottewal is singing. Try them out for a listen!

2 out of 5 stars How we wish they returned to the way they used to operate.......2007-02-04

It seems that Gomez are trying to make themselves more accessible. Big mistake. In ditching their initial quirky, mixed-nuts approach to compiling albums, they are becoming incredibly bland. 'How We Operate' is a scrapbook of inoffensive and completely forgettable doodles, bearing precious little resemblance to any of the collectible nick-nacks on 'Bring It On' and 'Liquid Skin'.

The rot set in on 'In Your Gun', though even then there was evidence of life in the tracks 'Bang Bang' and 'Rex Kramer'. Unfortunately it's been a downward slide since then. I listened to 'How We Operate' three times and haven't played it again; probably never will. It'll join Turin Brakes, the last two Cranberries albums and the other unplayed wonders on the bottom row of the CD tower.

4 out of 5 stars Gomez CD.......2007-01-25

Never really heard of Gomez before I went on a business trip to Detroit.Heard the title song, and had to have it. I'm 53 years old, who says we don't listen to the good stuff?

5 out of 5 stars First Time is Overrated.......2007-01-05

I didn't think much of this album the first time I heard it. I thought it was "okay." But, having dusted it off and listened again...what was I thinking when I first heard this? This is really an excellent album, easy to listen to all the way through. Again and again. Love, love, love at second sight!

Listening to these very diverse arias, it's easy to understand why Beethoven is reported to have esteemed Handel above all other composers. The program includes three of his greatest hits: "Ev'ry Valley," "Where'er You Walk," and "Ombra mai fu." The other arias, taken from operas and oratorios and in Italian and English, are less familiar but no less great. They display Handel's versatile, multi-faceted genius and his ability to express every human mood and emotion through purely musical means. In his liner notes, Ian Bostridge traces his Handelian roots back to his childhood. Indeed the style seems natural to him. Bostridge even makes the arias written for castrati persuasive, despite the difference in key and color. His coloratura runs are brilliant, while his intonation and diction impeccable. However, the baroque orchestra's flat tuning sometimes forces Bostridge into an uncomfortably low register, and his habit of starting notes without vibrato and swelling them tends to become mannered, disrupting the melodic flow. The orchestra is excellent, but with sparing vibrato and straight-forward phrasing seems to inhabit a different stylistic world. Moreover, it sounds distant and subdued, as does soprano Kate Royal, who joins Bostridge in two duets. The program, though compiled for maximum contrast, may be most enjoyable in moderate doses. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Handel Tenors.......2007-07-20

Just when the torrent of Handel recitals seemed to have slowed, we get two great tenor recitals in less than a month. Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge double up on only a few airs - Where'er you walk, Total eclipse, As steals the morn, Waft her, angels. Padmore is more dramatic, with longer scenes; Bostridge more lyrical. I usually listen to them back to back, but if I only have time for one, it is the Bostridge that gets chosen. His "Waft her, angels" pierces the heart.

4 out of 5 stars Bostridge in best form in Handel arias.......2007-07-17

I get the feeling that Amazon has given up providing official (paid for) reviews, so buyers won't be told that this colleciton of Handel from Ian Bostridge selects from Ariodante, Acis and Galatea, Samson, Jephtha, l"allegro e il penserosso, Semele, and of course, Messiah. The singer's voice has darkened since it willowy early days, and even though there are still a few holdouts like me who cannot abide its tone, there is no doubt about Bostridge's artistry. Here he gets good period accompaniment from the famous Age of Enlighenment orchestra (zingy strings, ni vibrato), although the conducting is notably sluggish at points. The singer avoids his often excessive underlining and over-acting, so all in all one must call this one of his best recent outings.

There's very little to say about this recording of ethereally beautifully singing by the 24 young English lads who make up the group Libera. Enormously popular in Asia, the group is part of a parish choir in South London that has been around for many years, with of course, changes in personnel as voices change. There are a couple of pieces here by well-known composers--Pachelbel, Sibelius, Holst, Dvorak--but to their music have been added words and, of course, it's all been "arranged." Texts, translations from Latin, and arrangements as well as original music are by Robert Prizeman, the choir's director, and some of the numbers are accompanied by quiet synthesizers, organ, and/or drums. There is something new-age about this project and some might find the effect syrupy, while others might long for the "real" thing, that is, boys with this talent singing some Renaissance or later music that is not designed simply as balm for the ears. But for what it is--a perfectly pitched choir with some outstanding solo work as well, singing easy-to-listen to short numbers--this is just lovely. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful sounds.......2007-07-31

The new boy choir sound goes beyond the usual church stuff into a New Age/Modern Harmony category. This CD is superbly produced and recorded and is a delight to listen to. Very calming and spiritual, it will lift you into another world.

5 out of 5 stars No choral collection can be considered complete if this CD isn't there...!!.......2007-07-20

The "marksmanship" involved in the creation of this CD is spot on target. You do not have a complete collection of choral music until you own this CD. Flawless, impeccable, perfect, precise, exacting...the best of the best. Buy it. This is music creation at the very apex of recording technology that captures these young voices in a stunningly clear and beautiful manner. The robust orchestration and organ are sensibly down played to allow these intricate harmonies to come through. This is pure genius....brilliant....EMI should be proud of this recording as one of the F1 Ferraris in their classical music catalog... BRAVO!! A 5 minute standing ovation!!!... A job well done!!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Pleased!.......2007-07-10

I just recently loss my brother-in-law who passed away on Memorial day of this year and this CD has been able to comfort my family and I through this terrible loss. I absolutely recommend that anyone who is needing spiritual uplifting should definitely buy this CD. I consider this the best comfort CD ever!

5 out of 5 stars It takes me away .......2007-06-28

I heard this album playing as I browsed in a Barnes and Noble, it was enchanting. I had to know what it was. The sales person in the music section filled me in and we listened to it for hours while we drove. Their voices are heavenly. I am transported to a place of peace and calm.

2 out of 5 stars Censoring of Be Still My Soul.......2007-05-21

On the fifth track, Be Still My Soul, the arrangers reworked the original lyrics of Katharina A. von Schlegel and taken the third verse:

Be still, my soul:
when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened
in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know
His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe
thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul:
thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness
all He takes away.

And made it a combination of the third and second verse:

Be still, my soul:
when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened
in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know
His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe
thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul,
the waves and winds
still know His voice
Who ruled them
while He dwelt below.

In other words, they have taken the name of Jesus out of the original lyrics. The verse doesn't even make sense now. I feel it is awful that the one who can soothe all our sorrow and thy fears, Jesus, was censored from this beautiful work.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody knows.......2007-04-12

1975's finest. Perhaps one up- or mid-tempo tune short of an all-the-way (explosion, fireworks) masterpiece (that closing track is a touch maudlin), Between The Lines nevertheless blows out Ian's nearest "rivals" (Carole King, Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks and, dare I say, Paul Simon) and makes a serious claim for one of the 70's preeminent essential LP artifacts.

The success here, I believe, is that Ian (already a songwriting master by '69) keeps the chords simple enough to let her mesmerizing blasts of lyrical wisdom run their course. And there is sagacity, however embittered, on every track. The arrangements are smart, providing properly discreet shading to Ian's soul-inflected folk (and, occasionally)cabaret musings.

Ian sings a mean, low-key revelation. Even when her lyrical and sonic milieu is the tawdry dancehall ("Bright Lights and Promises"), she never showboats. Ian has the inspired ice of Peggy Lee. "The Come On," a deeply dire meditation on cheap love and low esteem, never lapses into sobbing gymnastics. Ian just delivers the bad news like an X-ray. Perfect every time.

There is a fiber-optic perfection to Ian's poetic observations. Male radio programmers and DJs were compelled by burning telephone lines, not market imperatives, to air "At Seventeen" - a startling runaway hit (prefiguring the later, bolder success of Suzanne Vega's "Luka"). It was simply heavy lasers set to kill. Ian didn't hit the mark, she expunged it.

What an artist.

5 out of 5 stars A great memory!.......2007-01-15

Listening to this CD brings back memories of my "younger" years. It still is as pertinent now in its wording as it was back then...just in a different way. A great rememberance.

5 out of 5 stars Between the Lines.......2007-01-10

One of the best voices God ever created. A mix of rock and easy listening to words and music you can understand. Every line connects with the very core of every human being that listens to her. Janis Ian is a true voice in the music industry.

4 out of 5 stars THE LAST OF THE '70's SONGWRITERS.......2006-02-26

Some of Janis Ian's wordplay could make a bad poet blush. Take this line from her adolescent hell signature song, "At Seventeen", a tune betrayed by this bizarre description of teenage alienation, "Their small town eyes will gape at you, (gaping eyes?), in dull surprise when payment due, succeeds accounts received at seventeen". How's that, a teenage accountant? Or this from, "Tea and Sympathy", "Pass the tea and sympathy, for the good old days are long gone, we'll drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won." Never have I wanted to drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won. But just when you want to file these feminist minded, man-eating compositions under aimless testements, Ian slam bangs the finish with two monumental orchestrated numbers questioning the choice between laying down to the death of a lifetime with your lover, or the freedom artistic pursuit and single-hood can offer, making all her previous meandering diatribes sound meaningful. Here the album stands up and says hello, and the crescendoing climax calls you back for another listen. Some nice touches here and there as well, including a brooding cello solo at the end of, "Water Colors".

5 out of 5 stars Awesome walk back in time........2005-07-13

I owned this album (vinyl) in the 70s and it's as great today as it was then. Was very glad to find it in CD, and can now share this incredible music with my kids. Thanks!

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever!.......2007-04-24

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

5 out of 5 stars Kristen Chenowith.......2007-02-26

I bought this CD for the Girl in 14G. Yes, it's that good...

4 out of 5 stars Has its moments.......2007-02-19

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-19

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

5 out of 5 stars This woman has what it takes, and then some..........2007-01-12

Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Boys NOT the UK single version.......2007-07-11

A great album by a great band. But when oh when will we get the FULL UK single version of 'One Of The Boys', which clocks in at over 5 minutes (basically the same as the album version but withourt the infernal telephone dialling 'effects'). Surely there must be a master out there somewhere - until then I'll stick to my scratchy old 45...

4 out of 5 stars Mott - very accesible glam.......2007-06-02

mott the hoople has a glam sound that truly rocks.. whether covering tunes from lou reed or david bowie or playing originals their sound is original.. While not as innovative as t-rex, bowie, reed - they were able to charm the masses with their sound.. i would highly recommend this for any comprehensive glam collection.. Their version of all the young dudes is monumental..

5 out of 5 stars Glam is an attitude, not a look. Mott typified that........2006-11-10

Bowie loved this band. And when their lack of success almost broke them up, He came in and produced this album for them. This 1972 masterpiece put them up there with the likes of T.Rex and Ziggy Stardust as the bearers of a musical movement loosely called Glam Rock. Imagine a glamed out Rolling Stones. They were not goofy like Slade or artsy like Roxy Music or Bowie. They were just right. Like the New York Dolls, they had a trashy attitude. Unlike the Dolls, they knew how to play their instruments. The bonus material is great. The demo version of "One of the Boys" is out of sight.

5 out of 5 stars anything less than 5 stars is absurd!.......2006-10-05

David Bowie may have written the "hit" on this album and may have helped the band in any number of ways but it sickens me to hear so many comments in the literature implying Bowie's contribution is responsible for this band's success. Certainly he helped them at a crucial time when they may have passed on to anonymity but the talent was all theirs. When one listens to the bonus Bowie track where he sings "All the Young Dudes" even though he wrote it, it is obvious Mott the Hoople made it their's. Mott is a perfect example of how the media can destroy a band. Lord knows what may have come from these guys if Allen and Ralphs had hung around for another two or three years. As a musician and song writer this is one of my all-time favorite early seventies albums. I am also a Bad Company fan but I'll never understand why anyone liked B.C.'s version of Ready For Love more than Mott's...at best its a fair imitation. Like many bands during this time they were phenomenally talented and creative but only maintained their edge for a short while. Give them the credit they deserve!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2007-04-12

This great soundtrack does well to one of the best musicals of all time. The recording is clean and vibrant and the original London cast shines. Any fan of Les Mis will do well to own this and anyone who wants a touch of class should get it too. It offers up love songs, songs of rebellion, drama, comedy, and runs the gamut of emotions. A fantastic piece. If I had one small problem it is that track 1 (Work Song) cuts out about 1/2 second early, though I believe this is do to the transitioning and closeness of recording of tracks 1 and 2. It's a small grievance that most probably will not notice.

5 out of 5 stars Superior to the Broadway Cast -- sort of........2006-09-07

I'd owned the Original Broadway Cast of Les Miserables for over a year before I bought the London Cast. What finally convinced me to buy the London Cast was the casting -- many of Broadway and the West End's top stars are on this recording (though this musical is what most of them owe their success to).

We can look back in hindsight to the early 80's and see the spectacular cast: Patti LuPone (Eva in Evita, Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd), Colm Wilkinson (Phantom in Phantom of the Opera), Michael Ball (Count Fosco in Woman in White, Alex in Aspects of Love), and Rebecca Caine (Christine in Phantom of the Opera) all stand out. There is nothing like hearing Caine's lush, effortless, crystalline soprano on the song only found on the London recording, "I Saw Him Once." For no other reason than for that additional song, this recording is worth purcashing, even if you already own the Broadway Cast. Not that all of the cast is superior to the Broadway version -- the definitive performances of some of the supporting roles (Enroljas, the Thenardiers, and I also prefer Terrence Mann's Javert) come from that recording. The main supporting roles, however, truly outshine their alternate cast on this one (although Judy Kuhn as Cosette is fantastic!).

The orchestrations are definitely inferior to the Broadway version, however. Many are taken at a slower tempo and played with less gusto. This is particularly evident in "Red and Black," if my memory serves me correctly. Some of the lyrics are sung in an odd way by the man playing Enroljas, as if he's overdramatizing, but that's only one track of thirty-odd tracks. Another minor irritation: Cosette's songs are cut short and placed into a five minute "love montage" which can be found in their full versions on the Broadway cast with the also-great Judy Kuhn.

This is the show that skyrocketed some of these performers to stardom -- Ball, Caine, Wilkinson -- and cemented others' places: LuPone, for example. It's a superb cast recording of one of the greatest musicals in history.

Buy it.

English composer Robert Prizeman has taken a conventional English boy's choir--usually a haven for sweet songs and ecclesiastical renderings--and made them contemporary without selling out any of their intrinsic charm. Their stacked choral voices and lead sopranos, dressed up with electronica rhythms, synthesizers, and strings still sound like they could be coming from the church balcony, even while they exude an Enya-like appeal. While there are adaptations of Gregorian chants and Sibelius hymns, most of the songs are Prizeman originals based on those styles, with texts often drawn from Latin Liturgy. Except for the chilled romanticism of "Stay With Me," and the rhythm driven "Adoramus," whose chorus sounds like a Harry Potter incantation, few of the songs on Free have the anthemic pop appeal of "Salva Me" or "Vespera" from previous albums. Instead, Prizeman has opted for a more serene sound on Free, even with their first video from the disc, the yearning "I Am the Day." Some of it, like Prizeman's setting of a Walter de la Mare poem on "A Song of Enchantment," gets lugubrious. But most of Free floats on gentle soprano breezes, intrinsically innocent, even if the boys might be smoking cigarettes behind the altar. --John Diliberto

I happened across this CD at Borders and was able to listen to it! One of the sweetest and heavenly CDs ever! I bought two: one for myself and one as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-04

I never knew that young boys could have such wonderful voices, almost angelic. The music is very relaxing and haunting at times, but that's what makes it a good album to hear to. The harmonies were so beautiful. To all choir fans, this is a must-have album.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and thought provoking.......2006-02-23

Libera is an amazing group of boys and Robert Prizeman really knows how to put everything together. My favorite songs on "Free" are Voca Me, Stay With Me, Adoramus, I Am the Day and Twilight. Each time I listen to this disc, another song seems to start growing on me. This was my first Libera CD (I have since bought Luminosa, Libera and Visions) and at first I liked the faster more upbeat songs but as time went on I started to really love the softer ones like Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep (beautifully done by Ben Crawley and Joseph Platt). The soloists are lovely with clear and pure voices, and the chorus just swells with harmonies. This is choir music for people who hate choir music.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Crystal.......2006-02-20

Like Luminosa, this is incredible. I can only compare it to the beautiful, pristine, classical pieces of antiquity, such as Vivaldi's Spring and Bach's many ethereal melodies. It's beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Solid collection of tunes.......2007-05-02

Of course, this CD includes the rollicking hit "All The Way From Memphis" but it is also loaded with a lot of other great tunes, ranging from the hard rock of "Violence" to the near-gospel of "Hymn for the Dudes" to the Dylan-esque "I Wish I Was Your Mother." Despite the wide range of styles, this CD has a consistent sound that is nicely tied together by Ian Hunter's ragged vocals and playful lyrics. The only tune that doesn't work for me is "I'm A Cadillac/El Camino Dolo Roso," which sounds too much like Bad Company for my ears.

4 out of 5 stars Last of the Mick Ralphs Mott Albums Remastered Beautifully.......2007-02-12

The mixture of Ian Hunter's glam, Dylanesque voice with Mick Ralphs basic rock riffs produces an intriguing rock masterpiece.

My review cannot help but be slightly biased due to my age and rememberances of listening to this during the 70s in rural Mississippi.
The world is much smaller now, with the internet, cell phones, and cable/satellite TV. But, listening to this unique and engaging rock sound from the UK merits many more listens thanks to the remastering.

Mott was the album between All the Young Dudes (thanks Bowie) and The Hoople, when guitarist Ralphs was replaced by Ariel Bender. Ralphs went on to start Bad Company, a smart move historically, but not for fans of Mott.

I happened to see Mott the Hoople, with Bender on guitar, in Memphis in 1974, when they opened for Queen. As I recall they were terrific. Ian kept telling the Super-Trooper lightist to focus the light on him, because he was the star. It was fun and he was a true crowd pleaser.

My favorite tracks are Honaloochie Boogie, Hymn for the Dudes, and Violence, but all pack a punch. Ralphs sings one of the tracks and just cannot compare to Hunter. But Ralphs contribution cannot be dismissed. He is a rock guitar virtuoso. Just listen to any of his work with Mott or Bad Company.

With Ralphs and Hunter, Mott peaked with this recording and the remastering is tops. I cannot give a 5 rating anymore, due to it's misuse. 4 is tops to me. Something like Sgt Peppers from the Beatles, or any of 10CC's recordings with the original group deserve 5 stars. Those are 10cc, Sheet Music, Original Soundtrack, and How Dare You.

10CC combined Beatles creativity and musicianship with operatic rock capabilities that preceeded Queen's. I did not realize 10CCs importance until recently, when comparing all the music of this era.

You cannot ignore the contribution of United Kingdom rock acts during this period, or even the 80s. Beatles, Zeppelin, Supertramp, Deep Purple, 10CC, Mott, Bowie, Kinks, Who, Elton, Queen, and many others all share the inventive British musical charm.

5 out of 5 stars We Don't Need No Stinkin' Bowie.......2007-01-20

In the wake of the long overdue commercial success of the David Bowie produced "All the Young Dudes", Mott the Hoople had a HUGE monkey on their backs. Their success turned out to be a dual-edged sword... the pundits assumed Bowie was the source of Mott's newfound mature, controlled songwriting and production. Which made Mott the Hoople mad as hell. The liner notes for "Mott" open with DH Lawrence's "A Sane Revolution," and the abandon epitomized in that poem becomes the rallying cry for "Mott."

With "Mott," Ian Hunter basically puts a saddle on his back and tells his bandmates, "Mount up... we're gonna make those critics eat their words, and if I have to, I will carry all of us, even if it kills me." "Mott," not "All the Young Dudes," turned out to be the pinnacle of Mott the Hoople's outstanding discography, with Hunter writing or co-writing every track other than Mick Ralph's comparatively weak "I am a Cadillac."

Granted, "All the Young Dudes" is a great Bowie-penned track. But in "Mott," Hunter strings together FIVE equally strong tracks ("All the Way from Memphis," "Hymn for the Dudes," "Violence," "I Wish I Was Your Mother," and "The Ballad of Mott"; along with two that are only a half-step behind ("Honaloochi Boogie" and "Drivin' Sister").

Sadly, Hunter's assertiveness probably drove Mick Ralphs out of the band to join Bad Company (where Ralphs ironically achieved more success than Mott could ever dream of). Without his Scottie Pippen to complement his Michael Jordan-like musical vision, Hunter would founder a bit until he eventually ran into another Mick (Ronson this time -- ironically, of ex-Bowie fame, but I guess irony was Mott's constant companion).

Upsetting the apple cart was Mott the Hoople's modus operandi even before "Mott," and in retrospect, it seems somehow appropriate that they flamed out in the brilliant burst of light that is "Mott." They would release one more album sans Ralphs ("The Hoople"), but things would never again all come together at once like they do on "Mott." Definitely one of the great rock albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential CD If You Want To Understand The Seventies.......2007-01-17

First of all, the remastering on this CD is stunning. Everything is crystal-clear: vocals, bass, drums, guitar -- the works. Well done!

Two quick comments:

1. When I was in high school, the cool kids (mostly upperclassmen) carried around albums like Uriah Heep's Live (1973), Yessongs, Queen II and this alubm by Mott the Hoople. There was something about Mott that was alluring to teens looking to identify with angst, rebellion, attitude, and catchy grooves. I remember buying the album around 1974 or 1975 and enjoying it. Something about it always made me feel emotional. Today, I appreciate the album even more -- and feel even more emotional when I listen to it.

2. The songs on Mott stand the test of time. Some 30 years on, this album still sounds fresh. Ian Hunter's voice is a bit of an acquired taste (imagine a cross between Lou Reed and Bob Dylan), but there's no denying the man's passion.

The opening track ("All The Way From Memphis") is classic. The piano riff, alone, is worth the price of admission. But there really isn't a clunker on this disc. Favorite tracks include "Honaloochie Boogie," "Hymn For the Dudes," "The Ballad of Mott the Hoople," and "I Wish I Was Your Mother" -- the song whose lyrics never fail to choke me up for some reason.

Mott by Mott the Hoople is a slice of musical history that no serious collector should be without. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mott Triumphant.......2006-11-27

I used to lie in my basement bedroom listening to "Things from England" every Friday afternoon on the radio. The first time I heard "All the Way from Memphis" my ears perked right up: a little poppy, but tough, artful but not effete. And why was the singer cackling malevolently in the background? I was hooked. Rolling Stone voted MOTT the best album of '73 and it stands as their finest hour (the ferocity of their live performances notwithstanding). Ian Hunter really came into his own as a songwriter here. Has any rock'n'roller ever been this nakedly self reflexive? Of the many songs he's written limning the highs and lows of the rock life, the entries here are classic. The swagger of "Memphis" climaxes in a duel between guest Andy MacKay's frenetic sax and Mick Ralph's triumphal guitar. And the frayed reflections of "Ballad of Mott" add up to the most poignant song about the lure of the stage ever written: "I changed my name, in serach of fame, to find the Midas touch. Oh I wish I'd never wanted then what I want now twice as much".

If this angle appeals you should check out Hunter's self titled solo album (abetted by the supremely crunchy Mick Ronson) and his recent "comeback" RANT, with the heartbreaking take on a rocker growing old, "Dead Man Walkin'".
