You generally don't have to listen too hard to hear what's on the mind of Los Angeles music collective Ozomatli. The multi-faceted band is rarely subtle in its politics or its incorporation of countless Latin traditions as well as modern rock, jazz, pop and hip-hop. But on the band's third album, Street Signs, the addition of the Prague Symphony and the distinct influence of Arab and North African music certainly qualify as ambitious curve balls. Announcing its intentions from the get-go, album-opener "Believe" starts with a Rai-style vocal melody before finishing with a gritty rap as Bollywood-style strings provide a sweeping backdrop throughout. Never lingering in one place for long, the band quickly goes from there into some of the catchiest Latin Rock this side of Santana's "Smooth" on such gems as "Love And Hope" and "(Who Discovered) America?" before tearing off in other directions. These fearless hip-hop bambinos truly go their own way, saying what they want, playing what they want. --Tad Hendrickson

Prepare To Get Your Groove On.......2007-04-11
Every song is fabulous and I feel instantaneously cooler just listening to it. I can't get enough of the feel good, latin/jazz/hip hop/middle eastern music vibes. Join the party and prepare to get your groove on!
The Soundtrack of LA.......2007-02-05
Drawing on influences from all over the globe, Ozo continues to amaze. I heard the track Believe on the local Pacifica affiliate right after a horrifying dispatch from Iraq. It was chilling--and the song has had a profound association for me ever since. Ozo truly represents the best that LA has to offer celebrating diversity and challenging the status quo. Ozo = LA.
Eh.......2007-01-10
I took a chance on this one because Amazon recommended it based upon other purchases of mine.
Not a winner for me. One or two cuts were pretty good, but overall this is one I rarely play. Not very inventive. Not much drive. Not of much interest.
Music is good, but I will not spend a cent more for any more.......2007-01-08
I dig the music, that is, when I can play it...
...discovered that this CD is encumbered with DRM. It caused iTunes to crash and it wouldn't let me import the CD... ...I listen to all my music mostly on machines in home/work or on my iPod on the go/in the car... ...what a waste of money on a "gimped" CD... ...and I won't spend any more money on Ozomatli CDs, that's for sure.
I have to say I'm not a rap or hip-hop fan.......2006-11-06
So don't be worried about getting this album if you are in the, um, over 35 generation and "hate rap" - that's me and I thought every song on this album was great! A guy I worked with in Texas recommended this band after hearing some of my CD mixes at work (probably b/c I like Mana). I happened to see Ozomatli live here in Kauai and they give the best concert I have ever seen (sorry about that Bruce (Springsteen) and Tom (Petty) who are the two who used to hold that honor in my pantheon).
I just got this and Live at the Fillmore which is excellent as well, although there's some overlap.
If you just like music (yes, it's like having to go to the ugh, country section, to get your Mary Chapin Carpenter and Townes van Zandt) check it out regardless of your prejudices towards "urban" music

Is there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Still, one glaring omission isn't reason enough not to pick this up. --Todd Inoue

GRANDMASTER FLASH & FURIOUS FIVE.......2007-05-17
AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR RAP OLD SCHOOLER'S. DELIVERY TIMEFRAME IS OUTSTANDING.
Sure-fire Collector's Item.......2007-03-12
I can't imagine a rap fan out there who would argue that Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five were not one of the best of all-time. Recognized as one of the pioneers of rap, particularly for turning rap into mainstream music, Grandmaster Flash should be respected for his work and ability to work with multitude of talents. "The Message" has to be regarded as one of the most popular rap songs of all time, and possibly in any type of music. That hit has been re-made, mixed, and sampled so much that even youngsters that were born after the hit was recorded will recognize the sounds. "Step Off" was also a hit during the break-dance era of the '80's, and many fans found that song more enjoyable than given credit for. Speaking of enjoyable hits, who didn't enjoy "Beat Street" (from the movie Beat Street) back in those days? It has to be regarded as one of the most fun rap songs to memorize, and "New York, New York" is another one that many enjoy rapping themselves. "White Lines" is a hit that many initially had no idea what the meaning of the song was supposed to be, but many figured it out after a while, once drug usage in urban areas of the country became heavily exposed to the mainstream audiences. Original lyrics, street-cred, hip beats/sounds, and strong social messages... Nothing seems to be missing in this compilation. If you like old school, make sure you add this one!
The Beginning of an Era .......2006-07-18
If you consider yourself a hip-hip fan (espically if you listen to most of todays garbage pop fake hip-hop, this is a must that you have this in your collection. Grandmaster Flash was one of the pioneers of hip-hop and even though this collection of songs was taken from the early 80's, it still holds up with its rawness. Its a shame that hip-hop has reached what it is today and the just arent enough hip-hop artist that do it just for the love of the music. Its a cruel world today in the music bizz, as most of the hip-hop artist of today are creations of some billion dollar record company and signs them to be the next MTV music hit. If you want raw, no nonsense hip-hop from the early days before artist cared about being #1 on TRL, this is a great place to start. ENJOY
Grandmaster cuts faster.......2005-11-01
Extraordinary music. Listen to what DJ GM Flash puts together: the grooves are so carefully fashioned and leap out at you time and again. In particular I've never heard a funkier slap bass sound - ever.
And let's talk MCs. Why don't rappers these days attack the mike anymore like these guys did? Are they afraid it's not cool to be energetic? Well no wonder no one dances to rap music anymore. But when you listen to this - the grooves and the punchy vocals - you will definitely move your body.
Only problem is: when you get hold of any other Hip Hop after this you'll be disappointed that the DJs don't cut as fast and clean as this Grandmaster.
The Quintessential 'Best Of' Collection.......2005-06-14
Like many of you, I've only heard "The Message" prior to purchasing this incredible 'best of' collection. As you probably know, Grandmaster Flash and company were recording the most popular rap songs in the early 80s. Most of these songs are stunningly wild and fun party jams. But in 1982, they released "The Message", which is considered to be the first rap song to be pushed from a novelty party jam, to a chilling prophecy, featuring effective social commentary. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five built a rock solid bridge for Run-D.M.C. to step in, and push their "Message" even further, which eventually brought the hardcore edge to hip-hop. Whether you know it or now, their presence is still felt to this day, since hip-hop hasn't made that drastic of a leap since Run-D.M.C. (that's quite debatable). It also helped that the production was flawlessly perfect. It featured dub, electro, and R&B that was sure to hook nearly every listener of urban radio.
So if you're in the same boat as me, you're probably asking yourself, "Are their any other good songs from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five?". Well, the answer is yes. This is probably the best single disc best of collection you'll find from these guys. These are long infectious party jams. Many of which include the artillery of a large emcee battle, such as the epic Furious Five / Sugarhill Gang collaboration of "Showdown". A song I didn't think I'd like given the title, "The Birthday Party", actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Although, "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" would have to be one of the most under-appreciated rap songs of all time. It's got one of the most clever attacks on the compilation, and will surely please any and all hip-hop lovers. They do tackle a bit more social commentary on tracks like "New York New York" and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)". The latter features hard hitting lyrics about the dangers of drug use, and probably the most effective lyrics in it's time, given the subject matter. The only knock I have on the album is the first track, "Step Off Megamix". It's merely a "megamix" of their most popular songs thrown into one track (recorded in 1994). It would have been nicer if they would have thrown in a old-school jam up front, or at least put this track at the end, since the original versions shine much brighter throughout the remainder of the album.
Overall, if you're into old-school rap, this is a great listen. It's chalk-full of groundbreaking historical material. If you're at all interested in the evolution of rap, from the pre-Run-D.M.C. days, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One could only be happier about the completeness of this collection.

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Customer Reviews:
The ultimate blues and boogie band!.......2006-10-27
Kim Simmonds has been Savoy Brown for doggone near 40 years now (Shakedown came out in 1967). Every incarnation of the band has had Simmonds on guitar. Early formation saw part of the band (Dave Peverett, Roger Earl, and Tone Stevens) split to form FOGHAT.
Just like there's no mistaking Simmonds' guitar, the same can be said for Chris Youlden's voice. And this two LP combo on one CD gives you a few of Savoy's best tracks.
First, I think 'Tell Mama' is one of my all-time favorite songs PERIOD! Here it is from the Street Corner Talking release. 'Let It Rock' is another goodie. 'Can't Get Next To You' is a Motown ditty that's been redone a time or two by different folks. I think Rare Earth did a great job on it, but Savoy Brown does a darned fine job, as well.
'Troubled By These Days And Times' and 'If I Could See n End'... Hmmm. Prophetic titles, eh? (Hockey term)
'Wang Dang Doodle' is spectazmagoric! I made that up, but I think you get the idea.
But to round out the whole thing is the epic tale of the 'Hellbound Train.'
"I'm goin down the road on the hellbound train. Take a last look baby 'cause you won't see me again."
What to expect? Very good guitar. Unique vocals. What I classify as psychedelic blues. Extended jams to showcase Simmonds talent.
What not to expect? Mainstream, Clapton/King blues. Foghat-esque boogie. Two or three minute songs. Can't tell a good story in that length of time!
When you get tired of hearing the various 'new' bands who sound the same vocally or sound the same as far as guitar is concerned, etc., just grab any of the early Savoy Brown albums - this pair is a great place to start!

Album Description
Virtuoso vocalist and songwriter Guida de Palma and multi-instrumentalist Michele Chiavarini have come together to form Jazzinho. This London based outfit records and performs a repertoire of original material in an idiosyncratic style that Guida calls Jazzinho (pronounced jazz-EEN-yo). Jazzinho, loosely translated as "Sweet Little Jazz", is a luscious blend of dance rhythms, Nu-Jazz arrangements, Portuguese traditional instruments, Afro-Brazilian percussions and R&B background vocals with soulful and organic Bossa melodies. Drawing on Jobim/Gil but giving it a twist of newness with effects and dub styles, the songs travel the Bebel Gilberto road but are a little edgier. Guida sings in Portuguese (her native language) and English: although either way, the lyrics seems secondary to the constant shake of the maracas. This special US edition of the album features 14 tracks including 4 exclusive bonus remixes, 'Sim Ou Não' (Sleepwalker Re-Work), 'Constelação' (Quant Remix), 'Astral' (Gerd's Straight Mix), & 'Yambou' (Phil Asher Remix).
Customer Reviews:
Nothing small about Jazzinho.......2005-10-22
This is indeed a fabulous CD. Top quality nu-jazz/bossa/samba--with a bit of Cuban timba peeking out on a couple of tracks. Some stand-out qualities: the instrumentation, musicianship, breaks and production values are as hip, clean, and smooth as you will hear anywhere. Also, the subtle touches of funky soulful flavor that season the expert bossa and samba flows are absolutely pitch-perfect while the jazzier/funkier and remix numbers are as deftly infused with just the right Brazilian flavor as anything you'll find. And finally there is the voice--bell-tone clear, sensual and transcendent: a transculturated and truly unique combination of bossa sensibility and souful jazz timing/phrasing that you simply won't hear anywhere else. It's the voice of a serious musical talent thoroughly steeped in two musical languages and traditions.
Buy this CD.
This work is truly inspired.......2005-10-12
As a long time fan of the brazillian jazz scene, I did not expect to be so completely overwhelmed by a project. This CD far exceeded my wildest expectations. Absolutely every track is worth listening to.
Rarely am I ever capable of listening to a CD without skipping tracks ~ Jazzinho afforded me this opportunity.
I can't wait to hear their other offerings.
Five Star Effort.......2005-07-15
I reviewed the initial domestic release less than a year ago along with the Korea import. This one though - it's DEFINITELY the one to get. The Korean import version is now available in the USA - the difference being that the import had about 4 remixes tacked onto the end of the album that were certainly worth it. The other difference is that the order of the tracks are different here than on the other two releases. Re: Jazzinho - they're a group consisting of some exceptional tight musicians highlighted by Guida De Palma's vocals. She's a very good singer from Portugal. Another key reason I picked this up was because I'm a huge fan of Smoke City and Da Lata, which are a few of Christian Franck's other works.
This is a killer album. It starts out with "Sim Ou Não" (one of the major differences between this and the others) instead of the energetic and breezy Yambou. "Sim Ou Não" is a track with that bit of attitude and tight organization - neat guitar, great hooks. Meanwhile "Yambou", which is moved towards the end of the CD, reminds me a bit of Sergio Mendes more recent work (from say 1996 with Oceano) although IMO it wasn't the best vocal arrangement for Guida. "Vertigo" was another track that takes you away... quick and... again... tight. I could go on and on about the songs; other stand-outs to me were the original "Constelacao" and "Astral". And then there are the remixes; the Sleep Walker version of "Sim Ou Nao" has a great moodiness in it and there's also the full 12" version of Phil Asher's remake to "Yambou", along with Quant's full edit of "Constelacao" - both of which are chopped a bit in different compilations. Both are stellar... Constelacao given a heavy beat and groove while Yambou has a poppy tune that'll make you wish you hit the beach more this summer.
I HIGHLY recommend this. Especially this remix version. And if you have this and like this, definitely check out Brazilution 5.2, along with some of these artists and groups: Wagon Cookin', Soul Quality Quartet, A Bossa Eletrica, Povo and Rosalia De Souza. Also - Guida features in a couple of sweet 12" (vinyls), like "O Misterio" with Nathan Haines, and a cut on Kyoto Jazz Massive's album. "O Misterio" can also be heard on Brazilution 5.3. The only gripe I have is that I actually prefered the other track order.
edit - please note that the title to this is NOT "Atlas". It is simply "Jazzinho". I cannot stress that enough. "Atlas" was the name of their new album for 2006, but now that will not be the name of the upcoming album either.
Brazilian Jazz @ its very best.......2005-04-13
Wow !!, I agree with the previous reviewer.
Everything in this CD is absolutely awesome; the music, the style and sofisticated taste, and most importantly: Guida de Palma.
Wow !!, her voice is very special and unique, and sometimes reminiding us of singers ranging from Rosalia de Souza to Flora Purim.
There's no weak cut in this CD (and that's hard to find).
I have hundreds of Brazilian Jazz CDs, and this one is easily in the best 10, no questions asked.
I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!
Brazilian Jazz WOW!.......2005-03-24
The music on this CD is a perfect blend of modern Brazilian rhythms, jazz and on some tracks chillout. Guida de Palma the lead singer is divine! Her vocals play off the percolating grooves from her band. I enjoyed every track, especially "Moody Maria".

Jump-up Brazillian.......2004-08-29
This is a great jazzy jump-up drum'n'bass album. It's a good one for people to listen to if they are new to dnb and a CD that you can sit down and listen to straight thru. Stand out track is Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você which is a beatiful remix of a Fernando Porto track.
Drum n' bass is not dead yet.......2004-07-30
There's not much to say that the other reviewers have not said in praising the greatness of this 2001 mix. I find that whenever I play this mix to friends they seemed almost stunned, not having heard a dnb mix of such high quality. For those interested in the search for other albums along these lines check out NU PERSPECTIVES from the Partisan Label in 1998 if you can find it, COOL STEPS from fellow brasillian DJ Patife, DJ SUV's 2003 drum n bass mix on DMC and his solo project on the Full Cycle label, called DESERT ROSE.
Drum 'n' Bass takes a step closer to widespread acceptance.........2003-10-28
Possibly realising that D'n'B has the potential to reach a far more wider ranging audience, `DJ Marky' mixes a set that focuses squarely on the less abrasive side of D'n'B, and thus makes such a definingly brilliant set, that it's undoubtedly going to be copied over the coming years.....moving fluidly through downtempo vocal breakbeat "Un-Cut's - Midnight", "Krust's - Jazz Note", before the introduction of the utterly sublime Brazilian themed D'n'B tracks are introduced "Fernanda Porto's - Sambassim", and the wonderfully breezy DJ Marky produced "Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você", before rounding out things perfectly with "Shy Fx & T-Power's - Shake Ur Body" (Listed here as "Shake It"). You'll be hard pressed to find a more accessible D'n'B mix album that'll delight newcomers & Enthusiasts alike, and one of a growing list of D'n'B albums that has a chance of making a mainstream impact. and is unquestionably is a landmark D'n'B album of staggering brilliance...
one simple word to explain this mix.....WOW.......2003-06-29
this album is so amazing, everything about it from start to finish is perfect, the tune selection develops through out the mix, it really takes your through a journey, the tune selection is amazing, so many classics from 2000-2001, and many great brazilain flavas here also. Also the mixing on this albums is nice and tight and Marky leaves in the tunes the perfect length only to get you asking for more! the scratchin on this cd in not technically amazing but its sounds so well preformed when he scratchs over "the hook" or the tunes. its truly shows that in 2001 when drum and bass came back into full effect, how diverse the sound became with dark bizness, disco style, liquid funk, latin beats, techstep and dancefloor music. and it also shows why DJ Marky is a amazing DJ
its so wonderful!!! go buy this album now! you wont be disappointed at all
Very Tasty Latin infused mix.......2003-04-22
A very accesible Drum and Bass cd. Nice tracks mixed well. This is not the bone crunching dark sound that DnB can sometimes be, but neither is it the light & airy LTJ Bukem sound.
It will work just as well on the dancefloor as it will in your headphones.
Being the nitpicker that I am, I gave it 4 stars not 5. I took off half a star as in some places it tends to jump styles (ie lacks a flow through the mix) and another half a star off becuase some of the tracks lean too much on the commercial tip.
Having said that, a very good cd to get. Most drum and bass heads will like it. It will also serve very well as an intro to DnB for those who don't "get it" yet.

Holy Chant,mystic roots. 5 and a half stars...........2001-10-20
This cd is a spiritual reflection... heavy dubs yes,but I think the emphasis here is more meditative and deeply introspective, with beautiful chanting melodies and serious conscious lyrics.
This is holy music, spiritual chant, make no mistake, and I dont think making money was at the top of the artists priority list when these tunes were first recorded in the mid 70's(This copy is a reissue).
The lyrics reflect deep yearning for spiritual peace of mind and body, and rejection of wordly attachments. The tracks invite the listener to conscious self knowledge.
The Bim Sherman track is a beautiful dedication to a peaceful and righteous life free from violence, especially poignant now, since he passed away last year.
So these tracks suggest the musicians and singers were well conscious of bridging the gap, attempting to unite knowledge of this world with knowledge of the next. And I mean that without any pretentiousness or attempts at hippy mystic "cool talk".You want deep roots/cultural music, then this is it,make no mistake. As the Jews have their Kabbalah,Buddhists have their forest meditation, well, music like this is the true true Rasta equivalent, and In my eyes,JUST AS VALID and spiritually important.Dont miss this one.Every tack is OUTSTANDING,so if you buy two roots records in your whole life, make sure of this and "Children of Jah" by The Chantells.I assure you,in the realm of spiritual chant, you cannot go wrong with these two purchases.
Excellent Roots Release.......2000-06-21
Killer tunes from Blood and Fire. All of the B&F roots releases are great '70's reggae, some of the best available. Collect them all and you won't be disappointed.

One Of Sammy Hagar's Best From His Early Years.......2006-12-09
STREET MACHINE is one of Sammy Hagar's best albums from the early part of his career, blending such influences as Ted Nugent and the Outlaws, with many great songs to boot. The highlight of this CD is the cautionary "This Planet's On Fire (Burn In Hell)", but that doesn't take away from the power of such songs as the slashing rocker "Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)" and the sensitive midtempo number "Plain Jane." Hagar's advocacies of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, increased funding for law enforcement/community policing, and capital punishment or life without parole for kidnappers make STREET MACHINE an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
Great String of Solid Tunes.......2000-07-29
Years ago I played this album to death. Recently I went looking for it only to find the label out of stock. I can still hear Plain Jane,Wounded in Love,Falling in Love, This Planet's On Fire, ringing in my head. We've got to have this available again soon. If for no other reason than to showcase an example of how to make an album/CD.I wasn't the biggest Sammy Hagar fan, but I'm sold on this work. Not a weak one in the batch.

The best of Sammy's with Capitol!.......1998-07-27
This was my first introduction to the Red Rocker, and I was hooked for life. For those who consider themselves one of Sam's hardcores as I do, this is arguably his best piece of work.Sammy surrounded his all time classic "Plain Jane" with many more memorable jams such as "Trans Am", "Feels Like Love" and "Growing Pains". Sam also shows his heart with two gripping songs that let you know what he's all about, "Child to Man" and "Never Say Die". Closing out he leaves you with the all to accurate prediction for the future, going "Straight to the Top".For those who want to get a taste of what Sam was doing pre-80's, then this is the best place to start.

Edgy Smooth Jazz.......2007-06-13
Other reviewers have said it, but its worth repeating: This is a CD that gets better with age. If all smooth jazz was the quality of Braun's Beat Street, it wouldn't have the sometimes elevator, saccharine reputation artists like Kenny G have given it. I have been paring down my extensive collection of Jazz, going mp3 library with those I like, selling off the rest; but Beat Street is NOT leaving my collection.
This set has so much going for it: Unfettered creativity, sweet melodies, great guest appearances, excellent interplay between artists, interesting diversity, haunting sounds, to funky beats. Philadelphia is a deservedly widely played, popular track off Beat Street, but this is not the only top tier song on the CD. Most are. Most of the songs on this CD are better than the best on most smooth jazz albums.
I haven't been that impressed with Braun's collected work, but on this one, it all came together.
FINDING HIS GROUND.......2007-05-20
May i start by saying i truly love this mans work.Still prefer his later albums though , this ones a bit too jazzy and not enough smoothy for my liking.
Groovis.......2002-11-19
Rick Braun is probably one of the best smooth jazz trumpeters out there, and it can definitely be heard on "Beat Street". This album focuses around the trumpet, and is perfect for those who enjoy those crystal clear notes ringing from the bell. Braun has quite a range on the horn and is able to pick notes out of both registers with ease. His solos are well formed and don't lose sight of the song. He plays with such an elegant ease, yet is able to attack with force. "I'll Be There for You" is a great track that symbolizes everything about this musician.
The album opens with "Groovis" where Braun and guest sax-man, Boney James, trade licks back and forth over a funky wah guitar rhythm. For "Papa Dee" Braun pops a mute into the bell and takes up double-duty on the keys. He plays with an idea, and then expands on that idea, but always returning to that original idea. His solos don't lose the melody, and even though he's blowing his brains out to reach high notes, it all fits together. The bluesy "Club Harlem" opens with the deep frequencies of a double bass, and guitarist Peter White's beautiful acoustic work backed by Braun's mournful wails. Braun's solo is smooth and perfect as he trades measures with White. White and Braun has always been a good collaboration and is worth checking out on White's "Caravan of Dreams".
Another great guitarist, Jeff Golub, appears on three tracks "Philadelphia", "Cadillac Slim", and "Marty's Party". He's another one that can roll solos off the fretboard without trying. His phrasing is clear and meaningful, even when he's rattling off sixteenth notes and faster. It's fun to listen to them play off each other on these cuts.
THE NEW KING OF THE TRUMPET.......2001-09-11
My favorite instrument in the world is the piano. But Rick Braun blows out some fantastic tunes with that trumpet of his. From the start you feel just like the first song: so "Groovis". Then you find yourself jammin' down to "Club Harlem" and then you are "Walk(in) the Walk" to "Marty's Party".
The entire cd is full of emotion, fun and cool groves. The one song that stands out is the song "Philadelphia". With that magical trumpet, he has captured the essence and attraction that is PHILADELPHIA.
In an age with grunge sound and sweet as a toothache sounds of some "musicians", it is nice to get in touch with the smooth jazz side of music. And with Rick Braun and his trumpet, it is nice to visit that side of the world.
My favorite jazz CD.......2001-08-08
For smooth jazz, this is one set of music that steps outside the norm. Beat Street just gets better with age, and every time I listen to it I go somewhere tropical and lively in my mind. It's the perfect cure to a sour mood, without being cheesy or overdone. It's the perfect Saturday morning, reading-the-paper CD with a cup of coffee. Rick's other CDs are good, and above the norm, but this is his best in my opinion. Every single song is great, and the way his jazz blends into catchy riffs is very subtle. I have 300 CDs and this one ranks in the top 5. Come to Austin, Rick!

Break out your cardboard........2005-10-31
Back in the day, when hip hop was called rap and nothing was cooler than checkered Vans and a boom box that was bigger than a Mini Cooper, there was Beat Street. A break dancing delight, the real deal, as opposed to the hollywood counter part "Breakin." This album, while irresistable to pop-lock to, has a message -- it was darn tough in the inner city back in the eighties, well, just like now. I don't remember much about this movie, but I remember it being a lot tougher than Breakin, and it didn't have any stupid hollywood clowns who thought they had some moves. If you're in to hip hop roots and some classic "scratchin'" this is for you. And if you just happened to buy a refrigerator, this album is perfect when you're back-spinning on the box it came in..
