4 out of 5 stars fine garage rock........2007-03-26

this cd contains the original stuff: the 1966-1967 cameo parkway recordings. make sure you get this and not the later/older stuff by this band. for a long time these recordings were not available, so i was quite the happy camper when i saw that they were being re-released a couple of years ago. ? and the mysterians are more than just "96 tears," the song that they are known for. there are 25 garage rock songs here that all deserve a listen. this band was something of a flint, michigan version of van morrison's great mid-sixties band "them." ? and the mysterians were a bit less biting, a little less menace about their sound, than "them," but otherwise i think the comparison is fair. i much recommend this cd to all seeking some audio travel into the past world of 60's gargage rock.

1 out of 5 stars don't do it!.......2006-06-07

This band is horrible. Not 'rock and roll' at all. Talentless. The organ player is the most obnoxious, amateur piece of garbage ever. Don't waste your money on this, seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Finally the Real Deal.......2006-02-27

After decades of having to listen to remakes Cameo has finally released the origional recordings on CD. One of Americas true great garage bands.

4 out of 5 stars ~ cool ~.......2006-02-16

Here's what "cool" was all about in 1960. Unfortunately, the year was 1966 and "cool" had moved on to psychedelic rock, leaving ? and the Mysterians in the rear view mirror... except for a little ditty called '96 Tears' that unashamedly shot its minimalist self all the way up to #1 on the national charts. This lone track, miraculously manifesting itself in my backyard of Saginaw and Bay City, Michigan, stands with 'Louie Louie' and 'Satisfaction' as one of the defining hits of 1960's rock. It demonstrates that what's cool in any era stays cool. Louis Armstrong was cool in 1928, and his cool is still cool today. Elvis was cool in 1968, and that cool is still cool today. And just as Ricki Lee Jones defined cool in the 1970's, ? defined his own brand of cool in the 1960's. So I say, "Once cool, always cool".

? and the Mysterians logged two Top 40 hits in 1966 ('I Need Somebody', which leads off this collection, rose to #22 as the follow-up to '96 Tears'), and if life was fair they would have scored another Top 40 selection with 'Do Something To Me'. This disc includes all of these tracks, as well as both of ?'s full-length albums presented in their entirety. Their first album is clearly the better of the two. And as the band established a funky, stripped-down rock sound, that disc worked it's way up to number 66 nationally. Their follow-up album took on a fuller, deeper sound featuring more echo and bass, and at times their recordings took on a Young Rascal-ish or Tommy James and the Shondells-ish sound. I prefer the original, garage-laden take from the first LP.

The best segment on this 27 track collection is offered in the first six tracks. There are loads of great hooks and memorable, though simplistic melodies to be had. Most of the tracks are funky rock tracks, with the exception of the bands cover of 'Stormy Monday' (which ?'s silky vocal delivery is perfectly suited to), and the fifth track, 'Set Aside', a piano-driven standard instrumental blues number. From time to time, such as on 'Why Me', where the sound evolves dangerously close to bubblegum music, the band demonstrates their diverse capabilities, but nothing is better than when these Texans churn though their funky minimalism.

Some of the compositions on the disc, the large majority of which were penned by band members, are certainly 'second-tier' in quality, such as '"8" Teen' and 'Don't Break This Heart Of Mine', and these lesser tracks appear with greater frequency on the band's second album. The weakest strand of tunes begins with track 18, 'Hangin' On a String', and proceeds through track 22, 'Just Like a Rose', with the exception of the guitar-driven funk of 'It's Not Easy' on track 20. There is also, unfortunately, a shameless '96 Tears' imitation, 'Can't Get Enough Of You, Baby'. It might have been a decent song had '96 Tears' never existed, but this is an obvious attempt to cash in on what should have remained an unimitated melody. This faux pas is more than compensated for, however, by the inclusion of a '96 Tears' alternate take, a slower and more bluesy stereo version, as the last track. The boys also offer up a nice cover of The Isley Brothers 'Shout' (more slick than rugged, however, which the composition deserves), and their own version of 'Midnight Hour', not to be confused with Wilson Pickett's dynamo number, but a sweet composition nonetheless. Most of the 27 tracks, even those straying from the band's most successful formula, possess redeeming qualities, not the least of which is ?'s smooth voice, matched only by his cool persona.

For quite some time, quality digital recordings of ? were difficult to come by. Cameo-Parkway records, perhaps best known as Chubby Checker's label, finally got around to remastering and reissuing the catalogs of their top performers in 2005, and ? and the Mysterians were included in the lot. The band represents a slice of rock and roll not readily occupied by other bands of the era. Perhaps their biggest distiction was to sound minimalist in an era of excess and experimentation. However they are to be defined, their value must be experienced to be appreciated. This package includes informative liner notes from Jeff Tamarkin, and several period photograph and displays of memorabilia. Unfortunately, lyrics are not included, and despite three track listings, no where are running times for the tracks offered, although most tracks seem to struggle to pass the two minute barrier. But that's cool, too. Dig it.

5 out of 5 stars Landmark Upper Midwest Garage Rock Soul.......2005-12-05

The Cameo Parkway box set ("Cameo Parkway 1957-1967") released earlier this year included the Mysterians' garage rock standard, "96 Tears," along with their debut album's leadoff, "I Need Somebody." Having been sequestered in Allen Klein's vaults (along with the rest of the Cameo Parkway catalog) for nearly forty years, the freshness of the master tapes blew away the cobwebs grown over countless gray-market remastered-from-vinyl reissues. This follow-up volume, one in a set of eight to drill down on specific Cameo Parkway artists, fleshes out the rest of the Mysterians' seminal mid-60s recordings.

Though the band couldn't be expected to wax another side as fully realized and potent as "96 Tears," the rest of their catalog is no slouch. There's a Stax-like funkiness underpinning the band's garage rock, making these tunes danceable in a more seductive manner than their coastal contemporaries. The band wrote most of their own material, and picked up a few purpose-built tunes (like the super-fine "96 Tears" knock-off -- and Smash Mouth cover hit -- "Can't Get Enough of You Baby") and covers that include bluesy readings of "Stormy Monday" and The Isley Brothers' "Shout." The slower (and stereo) unreleased take of "96 Tears" is a nice addition, if only for how well it shows the supercharged power of mono mixing on the original.

This CD includes the whole of the Mysterians' two Cameo albums ("96 Tears" and "Action"), both sides of their last Cameo single ("Do Something to Me" b/w "Love Me Baby (Cherry July)"), and a pair of unreleased stereo alternates from 1966 ("Midnight Hour" and "96 Tears"). The only side that seems to be missing is the A-side of their single as The Semi-Colons, "Beachcomber." Ironically, the B-side ("Set Aside") is present, as it was on the debut album. All tracks are true stereo, except for mono on #1, 6, 7, 11, 12, 21, 22, 24, and 25. Jeff Tamarkin's liner notes are heavy on the hipster-ese, and the art direction is light on photos; both minor quibbles given the riches in the grooves. [©2005 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

5 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Bigger!.......2007-07-27

The Electric Prunes were an American Band who had their glory days in 1967-68. They released a good handful of singles of which two were quite successful; especially "I Had Too Much to Dream" will be remembered by fans of early psychedelia.

Musically they appeared to be in the front league of the new psychedelia sounds which were influencing pop-music in 1966-68. The band seemed to be like an American version of the sounds and styles that were developed by English bands such as the Yardbirds, Syd Barret's Pink Floyd or Tomorrow.

This compilation contains their complete first two albums both originally released in 1967. Unfortunately their later career was ruined through their involvement in composer David Axelrod's ideas and compositions, which was preventing them from developing their own musical ideas and which eventually led the the split-up of the band. In recent years key members of the band have reformed the Electric Prunes and a couple of new album are available.

The first album (CD1) contains their highly original hit-singles "I Had Too Much to Dream" and "Get Me to the World on Time" and other fine compositions written by songwriter Annette Tucker along with Nancy Mantz and Jill Jones. Some tracks are stylistically close to the psychedelia approach of the singles whereas others are pure r&b/garage and others again pure pop à la Monkees or Herman's Hermits. This make the album somewhat uneven though the group generally handle the various styles well and the songwriting is quite good. Bandmembers Jim Lowe and Mark Tulin wrote the Rolling Stones influenced "Luvin'" and one song was a group compositions. The rest of the album was written by outside composers. Among the bonus-tracks the debut single "Ain't it Hard"/"Little Olive" are great - both would have worked better on the album than the Davy Jones type ballads "Onie" and "About a Quarter to Nine". The outtake "I've Got a Way of my Own" written by the Hollies seems a little unfinished but is still a great track that suits the band well.

The follow-up album "Underground", released the same year, gave more way to the band's own material. Generally the album come out more consistent and more like a tradtional "garage" album, though some psychedelia sounds pop up here and there.

Three songs "The Great Banana Hoax", "Dr. Do-Good" and "Long Day's Flight" were tried for singles, but all failed to make it to the charts. They were great songs but were obviously not commercial enough; the most commercial track "Hideaway" might have made it for the group but it was only used as a B-side.

Bandmembers Jim Lowe and Mark Tulin show promising songwriting on "The Great Banana Hoax", "Hideaway" and the bonus-track single "Everybody Knows" / "You Never Had it Better"; strange that this catchy single did not make it.

Songwriter Annette Tucker contributed the fine "Antique Doll" as well as the single "Dr. Do-Good" and the dreamy "I".

Fine booklet with biography, informative notes and recent interviews with bandmembers make this a very recommendable release; especially for fans of bands like Easybeats, Standells, Pink Floyd or rock music of the late 1960's in general.

4 out of 5 stars Two disc overview.......2007-07-20

Until now, if you wanted an overview of the Electric Prunes' output prior to Mass in F Minor, the obvious choice was the compilation Lost Dreams on the Birdman label. Largely drawn from their two magnificent albums from 1967, including their surrealistic American hit, I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night), it included later singles, rarities, unreleased items and extended versions of album tracks. Inevitably, certain favourite tracks from the albums were omitted, however.

This new anthology from Rhino has the luxury of being spread over two discs and therefore includes both stereo albums in full, namely I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night and Underground. Listeners can therefore hear from themselves why the band were so embarrassed at being made to record Al Jolson covers and vaudeville pastiches, whilst also enjoying omitted classics such as Bangles, Children Of Rain, Antique Doll and I, all in the high quality re-mastered sound that Lost Dreams introduced onto CD, this time by Dan Hersch.

The albums are both presented in their standard versions, so if you want to hear fuller versions of Hideaway, The Great Banana Hoax and Dr Do-Good you still need Lost Dreams, though the long stereo version of Long Day's Flight has been added (confusingly mislabeled as a mono single version). A number of A-sides and B-sides from both albums are also added in their original mono single mixes, including the fabulous Great Banana Hoax (again mislabeled as being a previously unreleased version).

Rarities again include Shadows, which played over the credits of the film The Name Of The Game Is Kill; both sides of their first single Ain't It Hard/Little Olive; two outtakes (an unreleased Hollies cover, I've Got A Way Of My Own, and World Of Darkness, though this time both presented in mono); and their final 1967 single, Everybody Knows/You Never Had It Better.

This comprehensively rounds up the most seismic chapters of their history, up to the end of 1967. Mass in F Minor, as its title suggests, introduced a very different sound and a very different band, but that is a another story.

5 out of 5 stars only one complaint.......2007-05-06

undoubtedly this is a wonderful package. Finally the Prunes get some respect. My only problem with this set is this: we get single versions, adverts, but NO INCLUSION OF ONE OF THEIR BEST 45's---> no "Hey Mr. President"!

5 out of 5 stars Electric Prunes-'Too Much To Dream:The Original Group Recordings,Reprise 1966-1967 (WEA).......2007-04-24

Two CD, 41 track compilation. Looks like the Prune's first two CD's on an import reissue. Appears to be their first two lps, both put out in 1967, 'I Had Too Much To Dream' and 'Underground'. Yet, this is something you don't see everyday. First, you get every tune off 'I Had Too...' THEN plenty of out-take recordings and mono versions, then after that, WEA tagged on the entire 'Underground' album. Great late '60's all American garage rock / psychedelic. Plenty of 'deep album cuts' here that only true Electric Prunes fans (like myself) will likely remember, such as the tripping "Sold To The Highest Bidder", "About A Quarter To Nine", "Luvin'", "Wind-Up Toys" among others. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars For children of all ages: quintessential Prunes, necessary for both the completist and the casual listener.......2007-04-14

Like the first reviewer, I agree that this item--along with Live Stockholm '67--is the one to have, not only for the virtues of the complete package, but for the add-ons as well: the VOX wa-wa pedal ad, assorted (mono) singles, and bonus tracks. Apparently Warner / Reprise has something similar slated to follow for the succeeding two Axelrod productions in April '07, and even if those aren't the "true Prunes," I eagerly await their release as well. If you're going to do a reissue, this is how to do it. Now if only someone would put together a two-CD compliation of stuff that Dave Hassinger worked on, produced, or engineered (yeah, it's a pipe dream as competing label interests would prohibit it)--e.g., '65-'66 Stones, Prunes, Grateful Dead, and the list goes on~

this is a great jam cd great for deadheads this is what it would of been like to see the pink floyd back in 1966 1967 its a full 28 min of a pure psychedellic freak out i should say plus the video is cool has pink floyd peforming this since this album is live i say buy this and interstellar overdrive great jam man SYD BARRRET R.I.P

    1 out of 5 stars A Yawn.......2006-12-07

What a big disappointment. A bunch of stoned musicians noodling around and making completely inconsequential music. I like the Syd Barrett era, and I expected more from this album. Avoid.

5 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett, RIP.......2006-07-12

Syd Barrett will be greatly missed. His whimsical songwriting style was unique and greatly influenced many famous musicians like David Bowie. This cd is an essential purchase for those wishing a taste of genius.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but with important caveats.......2005-12-05

Excellent stuff because there is awesome improvisation on Pink Floyd's part, but be forwarned:

    - Only 2 songs in this video (but with great jams in them)

    - As of this writing this exact volume is available in a DVD as well. So why buy a CD ROM, which can only be played on your computer? DVD is less pricey too

    - The CD ROM auto-starts with a Macromedia (Flash?) interface that works rather badly (at best is cumbersome), and on my PC shrinks the film to a small square in the middle of the screen. You will be well advised to navigate into the CD to the folder called VIDEO (using Windows Explorer) and open the .MOV files yourself manually. Thus you will skip this difficult interface and get yourself a full sized view of the film

5 out of 5 stars The Lords of Acid Rock in the Psychedelic heyday!!!.......2005-08-09

I had both of these cuts on a pink vinyl bootleg for years.
    GET THEM NOW.

They are essential, true tablets of psychedelic revelation. The Floyd performed like this all the time, back in the day; this is the *only* semi-authorized live document from their eariest incarnation available, anywhere. Genius? Madness? Cacophony? These recordings "Boldly go where no man has gone before", although Hawkwind charted and mapped this territory a couple years later, the Floyd were the first to explore the Final Frontier.

This music will disassemble in your brain like a Rubic's Cube. It illustrates why the Floyd caught everyone's attention in the U.K. in the *first place*. Melts in your mind, not in your hand.

This set, with the CDR, is definitive. If you don't have the videotape "Live In London" (and very few people do) this is the only format available to view this footage, and it's SEMINAL stuff; get this, the Pink Floyd Singles CD, the mono rerelease of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and *marvel* at the clarity of vision (ethnogenically induced though it be) of these visionary young men, and wonder: "What the hell happened?"

The 1960s were an often schizoid time for film soundtracks, which occasionally attempted to combine rock acts of the day with the "Swingin' Sounds" that three decades later became both fodder for Austin Powers and inspiration for a cultish subgenre dubbed Exotica. Welcome to a couple of prime examples of the genre, neatly compiled on a single disc. Anchored by the Byrds' throwaway title track, the remainder of Don't Make Waves is a showcase for the cheezoid-genius composing and arranging talents of Vic Mizzy (perhaps best known for his loopy, inventive themes for The Addams Family and Green Acres), an improbably bubbly soundscape of twangin' guitars, bumping horns, sexy organ fills, and hipper-than-thou woodwinds. John Williams (credited tellingly here as Johnny) had something of a head start in the Exotica derby, having been an integral part of the Mancini team that set the swingin' standards earlier in the decade. The title track here goes to the Pennypipers, but the rest is a sunny star turn for the budding talents of Williams, whose romps here are lush and, unusual for the genre, dignified. Attention "Golden Throats" fans: Natalie Wood's key-challenged warbling on the folksy, borderline-psychedelic "The Sun Is Grey" may evoke fond memories of The Shaggs. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Two of the best 60s soundtracks EVER on 1 CD! Fantastic!.......2001-01-28

I have over 400 soundtracks, and I can safely say that this is among the most pleasurable, memorable, and immediately gratifying of any in my collection. I own nearly all of John Williams' work on CD, so I bought this for Williams' score to "Penelope," which I believe has never been available on CD before this release. I listened to this CD nearly a dozen times within one week of purchasing it! It's that good!

The first half of the disc is devoted to Vic Mizzy's "Don't Make Waves, Make Love." I had no idea what to expect at all from "Don't Make Waves." I had never heard of Vic Mizzy prior to purchasing this CD, nor had I heard of the film. The good news is this soundtrack is great and just as enjoyable all the same. But on to the real star of the CD (for me, at least)...

John Williams' delightful score to "Penelope" begins on track 14 with the film's title song, and Williams does a masterful job, as always, of weaving the melody into the rest of the score. "Penelope" is similar in style and composition to Williams' work the following year (1967) on "A Guide for the Married Man" (which is available on another fantastic CD exclusively from Film Score Monthly). Listeners familiar with some of Williams' more famous works may recognize a prescient foreshadowing of his theme from "Jaws" (1975) in track 25, along with other subtle hints at famous musical ideas he would later develop for future blockbusters.

This is a CD where nearly every single track is likeable, and, in most cases, memorable; ALL are a great pleasure to listen to!

The bottom line is: if you're a John Williams fan, like me, you NEED this CD. It's one of his best of the '60s and a perfect example of his early mastery of an established genre. If you love 60's music, you'll love this CD. Even if you don't like 60's music, if you dig catchy melodies, themes, and rhythms, this CD is for you! Unfortunately, this CD went out of print relatively soon after it was released (the record company, Chapter III, went out of business). Trust me, though - it's worth tracking down!

Williams' versatility is one of his greatest strengths (he can write brilliant music in any genre). If you've only heard his scores to "Star Wars," Indiana Jones, et al. (which are among his best, it is true), you've just sampled a part of his genius. Listen to this CD along with his scores for "Rosewood," "Stanley & Iris," "The River," and "Jane Eyre" to get a good sampling of the variety of great music this man is capable of composing and conducting. Happy listening!

I've been wanting to lay me mits on a copy of this somewhat out-standing New Zealand band's compilation for sometime now. It was worth the wait. Total of 29 tracks that cover all, if not most every track this garage / psych band has ever recorded. Believe they put out maybe two actual / proper albums. Either way, what drew me to this Stones-like five piece in the first place was their cut they have on that 'Nuggets II' 4-CD box set. Cuts that make this import more than worthy of repeated plays are "On Top Of The World", their true gem "How Is The Air Up There?" (cannot believe this wasn't a international hit-it's THAT good), "Bright Lights, Big City", "I Take What I Want", "Ride Your Pony", Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Loving", "Hey Girl", their Rascal's cover "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" and their R&B covers like "Land Of A Thousand Dances" and "I've Got My Mojo Working". Truly an over-looked piece of work for fans of this genre. Line-up: Kevin Borich (still in the business)-guitar&vocals, Trevor Wilson-bass, Phil Key-rhythm guitar&vocals, Bruce Howard-organ and Keith Barber-drums. Should appeal to fans of Chesterfield Kings, the Seeds, Standells, Remains, Q 65 and the Barbarians. Highly recommended.

Exceptional CD. Exceptional material; sound and stereo separation. All of these Russian CD are very hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars Sounded fine to me!.......2007-02-08

Maybe I am just not sophisticated enough to talk about highs and lows and woofers and tweeters and what did or did not happen when something was remastered. However I did not see anywhere where it claimed that this product was remastered. I bought it. It sounded fine. It was a good deal. Better than my old scratchy LPs, and my 8 track player no longer works. Call me simple-minded if you wish, but I thought that this was good music for a good price.

1 out of 5 stars great material poorly remastered.......2007-01-25

The original material, of course, is as good as anything ever recorded. Unfortunately it has been remastered by deaf engineers. The dynamic processing is so poor that they cut off the beginning and ending of the songs. They boosted the high frequencies so there is no bottom to the mix. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait for the box set from capitol.

5 out of 5 stars the official Russian releases...awesome sounding and best value for the money.......2006-10-27

Okay, I bought this at a secondhand shop along with several others from the same Russian series. The series made by Maximum CD in Russia, are the official series available there and in the Baltic states. each CD consists of 2 albums each! Most of them come with bonus tracks. And all have the original unaltered backcovers in the packaging. I eventually bought 13 of them with the exception of a Hard Day's Night and Help! Both of which come with the US and UK releases! The sound is superb, the price is right, and they make the International versions( EMI/apple) look cheap and crappy. Which is embarrassing for the folks at EMI which can't can't anything right (see reviews on the latest Capitol Albums volume 2 and you'll know what I'm talking about)..
If youre lucky enough to find this, buy this. Its a limited edition, even in Russia, where everything changes at a dizzying pace, so they could be collectors' someday. 10 out of 5 stars. A job superbly done by the cool people at Maximum CD. Awesome

3 out of 5 stars Thirteenth Floor Elevators-'1966-1967 Unreleased Masters Collection' (Collectables) 3-CD Box Set.......2006-11-05

Even though I'm a fan of this Texas psychedelic band of many days gone, I am GLAD that I actually got to borrow a copy of this 3-CD box set release. Total of 44 tracks. Discs one and two are re-edits and live versions of songs off their first two records. Sure, it's always good to hear "Roller Coaster", "Monkey Island", "Reverberation", my personal 13th Floor favorite "She Lives (In A Time Of Her Own)" and others, but THIS is really over doing it. Disc three is mostly unfamiliar tunes that I've never heard before, however some of the tunes here are actually decent. I know this is a 3-CD box set, but I STILL thought it was over-priced. Not only is this title for completists, but for someone who has ca$h to burn as well.

3 out of 5 stars For completists only.......2003-05-22

There is a wide range of 13th Floor Elevators CD:s and boxes available. The band however, only released three studio albums (and the producers released a fourth, the fake "LIVE" album consisting of outtakes mixed together with audience cheering). My advice to beginners: Buy the three studio albums. They are very easy to obtain, and that's where the really important stuff is.
The 13th Floor Elevators may be my all time favorite band, yet even to me this boxed set wasn't much of a revelation. CD's 1&2 consist of alternate mixes and takes from their first two albums, "The Psychedelic Sounds of.." and "Easter Everywhere". The third CD seems interesting enough, 15 tracks i have never heard. All the tracks, however, are crude tape recordings of Erickson singing Dylan etc and strumming away with an acoustic guitar. This is frankly quite boring, nothing like the electric madness of the band.
I give this set three stars just because the songs on the first two discs are so cool, however you get them if you buy the first two albums. It is cheaper, too!
