Customer Reviews:
Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Album Description
Here, in The Romantic Guitar of Liona Boyd, the loving hands of this renowned classical guitarist interprets some of the most beautiful compositions with the tender touch of a true romantic. The First Lady of the Guitar explores the melodic expressions of romance written by some of the greatest composers of our age, including the prolific and inspired Ms. Boyd herself. We often label this music "easy listening" - but the more astute will consider it rather an example of Liona's tasteful articulation and subtle ear for emotional nuance.
Customer Reviews:
Classical guitar muzak.......2006-05-22
Elevator muzak: soft versions of already soft music, such as showtunes and soundtracks. Just add a dash of classical guitar noodling, and you get this recording.
As a fan and student of classical guitar, I feel this recording does the instrument a disservice.
Liona Boyd meets Lawrence Welk.......2005-12-31
Simply put, it's corny and well below Liona's status. She must have produced this out of demand, from someone! It might as well be a spattering of Liona with Mantovani and Lawrence Welk!
Crank this one up 'til your mobile home rocks!
A Liona Boyd fan - still!
For Your Quiet Evenings........2003-01-23
I've had this album for years and I break it out every now and then. It's a very tasteful album and chock full of good tunes done extremely well by Liona. My favourite is 'Vaya Con Dios'. The piano complements the guitar so well. Give this album a whirl and together with Mancinis' 'As Time Goes By', you never know what'll happen.

The term "'70s arena band" doesn't usually suggest a platoon of seasoned black musicians in neo-space togs fervently preaching a utopian musical ideal in which the boundaries of jazz, funk, soul, and pop melt away into one monster, transcendental groove. Meet Maurice White's visionary Earth, Wind & Fire at the peak of its powers and popularity. This 11-track live album is culled from recently uncovered tapes recorded at 1975 EW&F arena shows across the East Coast in support of their classic That's the Way of the World album. Such is their self-confidence that they open with the album's massive hit, "Shining Star," an ambitious gambit that sets the tone for everything that follows. White demonstrates a generous mix-master sense when he invites jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis to sit in on an improv-rich rendition of "Sun Goddess," while That's the Way's title track and "Reasons" also receive lengthy workouts that remind listeners that EW&F was one of the original--and most accomplished--"jam bands." If anything, this is an album that will likely leave EW&F fans yearning for more. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
It's ok.......2007-01-30
I nearly have everything of EWF so I saw this on Amazon and I had to have it. It's pure without any digital equipment. Some songs are played in a different way but if you have: Gratitude [EXTRA TRACKS] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REISSUED] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]
than this one you have to buy too! They are like brothers and they have to be together, it's ok...
Better than "Gratitude!".......2004-02-21
I couldn't disagree more with the reviews here! Maybe I'm just too used to "Gratitude" of which I have owned three copies. I never bought this until recently and I LOVE this CD! I actually find the performances on this CD to be more polished and energetic than those on the other CD. "Sun Goddess" actually features Ramsay Lewis on keyboards here, and "Evil" and "Kalimba Story" just smoke on "Alive in 75." As mentioned previously by another reviewer, I prefer these performances of "Reasons" and "TTWOtW."
To each his own I guess, but this CD hasn't been removed from my CD player for two weeks now! I still love "Gratitude," but this CD is now my favorite live CD of all time! Just getting a chance to hear the finest live band EVER, plus two of the best guitarists in Johnny Graham and Al McKay is a REAL treat! If only there were a DVD video for this concert recording!
the real thing, and it feels good.......2004-02-20
I love this release. Some other reviewers talk about it not being polished, etc. That's the whole point. I love the "Gratitude" album yes, but this is better in that there are no overdubs, while on Gratitude there are plenty, mainly vocal. Also the arrangements here are more controlled and not full volume all the time. For example i like the version of "Reasons" here better than the Gratitude one. For one, Bailey's vocalizing during the breakdown are so much more soulful. Also the tempo is a little slower and not rushed sounding. More dynamics between the band here too. Plus "Kalimba Story" is almost too good! When the guitar comes in during the drum break..look out..they start throwin down. I recommend this to any EWF fan. This is before they became real huge and crossed over more. And this is the way it would have sounded, no effects, overdubs, etc. Check it out!
not up to Maurices' standards..........2003-08-31
This disc is recommended only for the hardcore fan. Columbia released this I'm sure without the blessing of Maurice. This cd is the sound of a band in development...wavering tempos, sloppy playing, amateurish and unrefined. I'm a BIG EWF fan, but no way can I recommend this cd just because I love the group. For a tight sound and great improvisational playing, I suggest 1980's recording "Live in Rio" released in 2002. For great sound but no horns - try "Greatest Hits Live" recorded in Tokyo in 1996 with Maurice. (His last tour, I believe. Graditude is also a more polished effort than Live in 75' and recorded only six months later
Outshines "Gratitude"'s Live Content.......2003-07-23
On a whole "Gratitude" with it's studio tracks is a better buy. But the live performance rises a few degrees higher than "Gratitude". If you really want to show off EWF- play this jam for your friends.

Album Description
With a hit Broadway play featuring the music of Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF) and an extensive tour into the fall, they are back in the limelight in a big way. EWF was one of the first bands to bring elements from African heritage into the pop mainstream, and they did it with pride. African rhythms mingled freely with intricate Jazz, Funk, Gospel and Rock instrumentation and melodies. Maurice used bombastic horn arrangements, layers upon layers of groove and a little African thumb piano called a Kalimba to dog-ear Earth, Wind & Fire's music, not to mention his charismatic tenor vocals. The messages in their songs are spiritually charged affirmations of love and hope, promising and comforting in difficult times and frivolously fun in lighter moments. On stage, EWF earned accolades for their enormously entertaining concerts. They were the first black act to engage rock theatrics (lights, pyrotechnics, stunts, magic tricks) and sell-out arenas worldwide. Flashy, explosive and heartwarming, it is a genuine love affair that unfolds each time the band takes the stage as Maurice beams warmth, peace and raw sexuality with panache throughout the proceedings. 35 years later . after earning seven Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, nine double platinum / Top 10 Pop albums, eight #1 R&B singles, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement honors from the NAACP, ASCAP and BET . Earth, Wind & Fire and their music remains as inspirational and influential as ever. Their relevance to the landscape of pop music remains evident from their recent electrifying performance at the Super Bowl, two consecutive summer concerts on .The Today Show., a knockout team-up with stellar Hip-Hop duo Outcast on the Grammy Awards. And in addition to these performances EWF.s music can be heard on Broadway: HOT FEET is an infectious, heart-stopping new dance musical that features such hits as .After The Love.

Earth, Wind & Fire In The Name Of Love.......2007-01-10
Wonderful collection of romantic and groovy tunes! Highly recommend this cd. Just love it!!
Substandard Re-Release For Fans!.......2006-10-09
After EWF satisfied their ever important Japanese fanbase (yeah whatever!) with the exclusive 'Avatar' CD in 1996, they altered that CD's original tracklisting, and included 'When Love Goes Wrong' for the shorter American edition re-titled 'In The Name Of Love' (1997). Fast forward 9 years, and Kalimba records suddenly decides to re-release 'In The Name of Love' complete with the 3 missing tracks that were once exclusive to the 'Avatar' CD ('Change Your Mind', 'Take You To Heaven', and 'Bahia'). Cha-ching..$$$$!! Make the fans buy the CD all over again huh?? LOL! Anyway, these three tracks are top notch, and will make you upset at EWF for not including them on the CD back in '97. **Also, F.Y.I., 'Change Your Mind' has been edited & remixed, which results in a shorter track for this 2006 release, so fans are still being shortchanged! BOOO!! This fact combined with the cheap looking cover art & packaging results in this CD losing a star in my ranking.
With 'In The Name Of Love', EWF released a solid followup (or continuation!) to 1993's vastly underrated 'Millenium'. This 14 track CD sounds contemporary and retro at the same time, featuring productions utilizing full horn sections on ballads ('Cruising'...orginally on the 'Get On The Bus' SDTK), and guest raps that complemented the vocals on 'Revolution (Just Evolution)'. For the most part, Maurice White's production is VERY good, up to his 70's tricks of using link tracks and interludes to shift moods, and dropping in loud electric guitar when you least expect it (the heavy funk 'Rock It'). Also, 'When Love Goes Wrong' sounds like it was originally slated to be on Philip Bailey's solo CD, but it fits in for the most part.
All 'n All, the music on 'In The Name Of Love' is mostly catchy but not monumental like the EWF's classic era from the 1970's, but the group displays their sense of fun, and for a moment, they reverted to questionable attempts to sound hip & street (the track 'Keep It Real' for example). Still, even with that song, EWF is to be commended for the solid tracks & great musicianship, BUT they have to be criticized for not including ALL of the music on the original version of this CD back in 1997. Making us buy CDs all over again is NOT cool, and you wonder why fans insist on making BETTER CDs at home ? Think about it!

Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13
McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."
Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12
If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.
Simply exquisite!.......2007-05-06
Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!
The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.
Love and frustration.......2007-03-08
This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??
Sincerely,
Lyndall
