Wonderful - Wonderful.................2007-05-25
What a great Album...Joy has such a powerful a warm and powerful voice .
Songs are well written and arranged .
This is my CD of the Year !!!
Welcome to German Soul.......2007-04-11
This album is gorgeous! Not only does it discuss 'conscious' elements (For the Love, Stranger in this Land and Soweto '76-'06), but it also elegantly narrates grown-up love and relationships. Honestly, if I didn't know her background I would have assumed that she was an American because she has so much soul--not neo-soul--but, that ol' skool thang that makes you want say, "Sang it, girl!" My only complaint is probably the placement of the songs on the cd. Some of the down-tempo ballads are followed by songs with an uptempo R&B or hip hop feel. You kinda have to abruptly switch emotional or mental gears. Overall, this is a great album.
This Album Slaps!.......2007-02-14
You've probably never heard of it, but Joy Denalane's, Born & Raised, is one of the best neo/retro soul records that I've heard in the past few years. In the most commercialized, over-saturated, and formulaic genre of music, where the trend of the month can define the sound/image of an entire year, Born & Raised is a refreshing departure from this tired (and clearly disastrous) glam-girl movement. So how was Joy Denalane able to avoid falling into this bottomless pit, while so many other great singers tumbled in headfirst? Well, for one, she is from Germany (she was born there, raised there, and from what I can find, lives there) which puts her in a different sort of musical circle, arguably outside of and away from popular American trends. Instead of some ol' young Beyonce vocals, electronic Neptunes-like production, and pathetic teenage content, what we get is an incredibly mature record: soulful Patti Labelle vocals, raw Curtis Mayfield-like production, and more meaningful content. How could a German woman have made this record? Are there Baptist churches in Kreuzberg? A great soul album nevertheless ...
Soulful album from German songstress.......2006-12-07
I am a fan of Joy Denalane's from the Global Soul collection by Putumayo and her first album "Mamani" (which I highly recommend). While the first album combined (neo)soul with some South African rhythms in a multilingual cocktail of her father's South African tongue, German (it never sounded so soulful) and English, this album is entirely in English. While Ms. Denalane could have taken the easy route to try and insert herself in an already saturated R&B/hip hop market to be the next Beyonce, Ciara, Rhianna (the list is endless), she decided to take a step back-and forward-mixing '70's soul with some really nice collaborations. And the album is a great departure from some of the more mainstream themes : it's not just advice for the ladies or romantic interludes, but also a continuation of social themes dear to her: striving to achieve (Born &Raised), black pride and survival (Stranger in this Land), the most pressing issues in South Africa (Soweto 70-06: the original in German is on the first album ) and a critique of the music industry (For the Love). All in all I highly recommend it (especially if you like Les Nubians for example and later Zap Mama) and hope it will get the airplay and recognition it deserves. This album (like the first) goes a long way to debunking the still held belief that good soul is a U.S. commodity (open your eyes: our brothers and sisters overseas are making some good soulmusic too).

She is ready to take off !.......2007-03-07
Joy Denalane hails from South Africa, has a German dad and arrives on the 2007 Soul Scene as one of the best kept secrets of the last 5 years or so.
Back in 2002 she released her first set "Mamani". That album, released in Germany, was a multilingual affair, whilst this album positions her very much in the contemporary R & B field.
Joy has an almost child-like delivery vocally and the Alicia Keys influences really come to the fore on the likes of "One In A Million".
"7 Year Itch" is a lovely old skool style Soul ballad. Very Seventies sounding. Other highlights are the lilting ballad duet with Governor "Something Stirrin Up" and "Change" a great up-tempo nu soul track that not even Lupe Fiasco's spoken rap can deflect from.
"Sometimes Love" is another nice ballad, "Start Over" a great dancer, and the title track a highly melodic mid tempo offering.
She even gets political on her personal take regarding the developments in "Soweto 1976 - 2006".
It's a very satifying album that will appeal to both new and old school soul fans from great new vocalist who sounds a little bit like Angie Stone and Mary j Blige.
The album was recorded in Philadelphia with full instrumentation, strings and horns arranged by Larry Gold.
Not since Mary J Blige has a female R&B artist sung with such conviction. Intelligent lyrics, a stunning voice, and collaborations with Lupe Fiasco and Raekwon make this debut in US a must.
Great album that will probably be amongst the top albums of 2007.

beautilful music.......2006-01-28
I had never heard of this group before I bought this CD. I bought it only because of the reviews I read. I love it. My wife loves it and she rarely makes comments about the music I buy.Great songs, beautiful harmony,I`ve listened to it every day for two weeks and I still want to hear it again. Highly recommended.
Awesome!.......2001-05-21
The only reason that I do not give this CD five stars is because I am very particular about what I give a "perfect" rating to. If there was a four and 1/2, I would give it.
The harmonies are to die for.....the Eagles with soulful lyrics. I have had this CD for two days and have played "Never Coming Back" and "Running Home" a dozen times apiece. They are spectacular songs that are in a league of their own.
It's funny how the more I listen to this thing (listening to it now), the more I enjoy it. I guess that's true for many of the great CDs.
I like it, in a strange way, the way I like Jeff Buckley "Grace", Wilco "Summerteeth", and Beck "Odelay"...I discover something new to enjoy at each replay.
This is one of those bands that I get very selfish about. I wish for their sakes that they achieve great success, but I like that I am one of the few that knows their talent and can keep them to myself. that's how I felt about John Hiatt ten years ago.
Despite this, buy this CD. Play "Never Coming Back" about 20 times, then try to tell me something better that has been produced int he last five years (Beck doesn't count).
Spectacular Vocal Harmonies.......2000-03-12
Introduced to these artists at a Lowen & Navarro concert, I was pleasantly surprised to hear such well-performed and conceived vocal harmonies. If you enjoy multi-part vocals by such artists as Restless Heart, The Little River Band, The Eagles, or Lowen & Navarro themselves, you will like this group's work on this album and their most recent, "Spin Art."
Their sound is fresh, real life and makes me want more!.......1999-08-27
This is a great Cd, This type of music I can play over and over, and never get tired of it. We listen to it in the office and it makes the day go by so quickly. It helps us look forward to the real life outside the corpoate walls. This music has brought a group of people together with a common interet in remembering and enjoying the words and thoughts in each song..... Each one of us have had our favorite song, but now their all our favorite. Give your self a fresh look at real life, placed into songs and go get this CD. See you at the Galaxy in September!
Most Awesome!.......1999-08-10
I was fortunate enough to live in L.A. and see Venice perform live several times. Since moving back to Kansas City, I was unable to find any releases available from Venice. I was thrilled to find this album! Listening to it took me back to those amazing live shows. The songs are memorable, the harmonies beautiful, the song writing amazing. I can't say enough good things about this band or this cd.

For shame..............2006-08-26
DJ Quik, producer extraordinaire, released another greatest hits album in 2006........
It was called "Greatest Hits Live at the House of Blues"
This compliation is, in no way, an official DJ Quik release. Arista, Quik's former label, is simply trying to make more money off of DJ Quik's name.
'But what about the songs on it?' you may ask. No doubt these songs are all classics, but they can only rehash a DJ Quik Best Of.. cd before it gets repetitive. "The Best of DJ Quik" is exactly what it says: it showcases the best (with some exceptions) of DJ Quik's cd's up to Under The Influence. This collection contains no tracks from Trauma or Under The Influence because Quik wasnt on Arista/Profile when he made those cd's. "Born and Raised.." takes songs from his first 5 releases (in order) in which he was on Profile/Arista. So overall, this cd is a get-rich-quik (pun intended) scheme.
If youre new to Quik, don't buy this cd or the Platinum and Gold collection. If I was just getting into Quik I would probably get the "Best of DJ Quik" collection, just because it is so complete compared to the first two mentioned, and it also has new tracks on it. "Greatest Hits Live at the House of Blues", I would only purchase that if I was familiar with all of Quik's albums. I couldn't see myself listening to it if I knew nothing of Quik's work, because it's all live instruments, no double takes or anything, just spur of the moment.
Concluding this, the only reason I gave it 2 stars is because it's still DJ Quik whether I like it or not. Once he gets out of jail in September, he is apparently going to get back together with his old crew and some NY friends (that means the likes of 2nd II None, AMG, Hi-C, Talib Kweli, possibly the DeBarges, and maybe even Suga Free!) to make an entire new album. Only time will tell. Until then, go listen to "The Best of DJ Quik", or do what I did and skip it entirely and buy all of his albums.
Another DJ Quik Greatest Package.......2006-08-08
We have another DJ Quik greatest hits compilation upon us.
Born and Raised in Compton-The Greatest Hits, features 14 DJ Quik songs. The radio released singles are here. The album opens with Born and Raised In Compton, from Quik's debut CD Quik is the Name. Other Quik is The Name tracks included on the CD are "Tonite," "Quik Is The Name," and "Loked Out Hood." It's hard to imagine that "Sweet Black P*ssy," wasn't included since this is easily one of Quik's most well known songs as far as the underground is concerned. Rarely does Quik perform a live show without including this song in his set list. Two songs from Quik's sophomore album Way 2 Fonky are included, "Way 2 Fonky," and "Jus Lyke Compton." The remainder of the set is rounded out by two songs from Quik's 1995 album Safe & Sound, 3 tracks from 1998's Rhythm-al-ism, and 3 tracks from Quik's 2000 release Balance & Options. Surpringsly the song "Speed," didn't make the collection although it's easily one of the most well known tracks from Rhythm-al-ism,.
DJ Quik Born and Raised in Compton is a small sampling of Quik's commercial releases. There are no songs (or no mention) of tracks from Quiks albums Under Tha Influence or Trauma--not even in the liner notes. It's as if Quik's post major label presence has been omitted from reference. In June of 2006, Quik released the CD, DJ Quik Live at the House of Blues.
The liner notes focus heavily on Quik's production work and some of the content is out of chronological order. One line reads "Leaving Arista in 2000, he formally produced "Heartz of Men" as David Blake for 2pac's masterpiece All Eyez On Me. All Eyez on Me was released in 1995, a year before 2pac's death. It would have been nice if the liner notes were written by someone from the hip-hop community rather, perhaps they would be more intimate and accurate.
If you really want to plunk down some change on a DJ Quik greatest hits package go with The Best of DJ Quik , it's a much more complete collection. DJ Quik Born And Raised In Compton is a somewhat satisfying sample of DJ Quik hits. A plus, at least the songs are not edited and appear in their intended state.

Album Description
"First impressions are everything," says multi talente Hip Hop artist and songwriter CONTAC. He should know. His much anticipated sophomore album "EEYEAYA," an independent project, is in the works as we speak.
Being that he was born on the east coast (Connecticut), raised in the Midwest (Minnesota), and dirty south rooted from Arkansas, his unique sound and lyrical weaponry is guaranteed to Blow-up. Most recently, CONTAC worked on collaboration with Atlanta's own Lil Jon & The Eastside Boys (BME/TVT Records). The song "Do Somthin" is a very crunk up-tempo song that is ready for action. Also he took a trip to California, linked up with Kurupt from Tha Dogg Pound on a song called "What's Pappin" that compliments the two MC's styles very well. CONTAC has proven that his appetite for the mic is always on starve mode. "To be or not to be."

Another feast for Handelians.......2003-12-25
Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!
Excellent music.......2003-09-14
Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?

Good and easy.......2002-03-10
Clay's music has spirit and a reality about it. He played for me and about 15 friends at a casual dinner in Nashville and he is as real on the CD as in person. You will enjoy this one.
A Great Effort.......2001-09-19
The charts call this CD "alternative country." The term "alternative" can bring to mind experimental, sometimes wacko ideas. None of that will be found here. This is straightforward good music. If you want a CD with a consistent sound that you can spin up and just relax, this is it. No loud surprises. No sappy, drawn out, formula endings. Just pure humanity. Mr. Greenberg writes what he feels. Sometimes funny, sometimes insightful. Always earnest. Bring a few friends over and sit on the back porch listening to this music. It's great. Word is spreading about this guy--as well it should.
very good first cd.......2001-01-22
The disc contains some very excellent material and through his lyrics one can really get to realize the time and thought put into this effort. Clay's voice and the music are very good, with his Oklahoma roots showing through. Clay puts forth a great rendition of Robert Earl Keen's "Dreadful Selfish Crime", and "The House Song" with Guy Clark is priceless. This CD is a great start and one which folks who appreciate efforts like Robert Earl, Reckless Kelly, and others, should own. I saw him in Oklahoma City solo and he was very, very good. He played some material from an upcoming CD, one that I will be purchasing.

Spokane, Washington's Don Emerson is clearly in step with contemporary Nashville trends in country music: his style of easy-listening country-pop is light on twang and heavy on romance and earnestness. But even as an independent artist thousands of miles away from Tennessee, Emerson compares favorably with many of Music City's heartthrobs-of-the-week. The arrangements here are mostly tasteful and understated, and Emerson's voice is able to impart emotion without overindulgence. What's more, Emerson wrote or cowrote 9 of the 10 cuts, allowing his true personality to shine through, a personality that revels in the sweet and sentimental side of life. Fans of current mainstream stars Bryan White and Mark Wills should find much to enjoy here. --Marc Greilsamer
