They do not agree with my ideology, but it takes all kinds and I say live and let live. Who knows maybe there is a special place in the afterlife for those who do not tolerate anothers ideology...Then again is it loving to totally close off an artistic expression and nullify all of its value simply because you disagree with the theology of the artist?

2 out of 5 stars Happy music with dreadful words.......2006-11-25

I had been given a tape of the first two Poi Dog albums while in college. The tape had long since been lost, and I decided to replace it by purchasing CD's. I debated about buying both of the first two CD's, but I'm glad I didn't. My fond memories of this music were squashed when I listened closely to the lyrics. This CD is full of hate and I see that others who have reviewed this CD have come to the same conclusion. I wish I'd never given my money to this band, but at least I didn't buy the first CD, too.
The CD is musically interesting, but the lyrics are dreadful. The overall message is that if you aren't an atheist, left-wing, socialist, extreme environmentalist, you don't rate. In the Ancient Egyptians, the singer won't ride a car for anything, but in the very next song, he sings the praises of an "aimless drive behind a motor wheel". I'm sorry, Poi Dog, but I have my own brain -- I don't need your new thoughts corrupting my head.

3 out of 5 stars This is good music.......2005-12-04

I have some quibbles with this album. Some of the songs have very blasphemous lyrics. Some of the songs have a "you should be an atheist, don't become religious" message. So be aware. The song 'Praise the Lord' is particularly evil. There are some positive messages in songs like 'The big walk' but there are blasphemous songs in there as well.

This album is very interesting. It is folksy music that has the nature of early-90's alternative rock. It has quite an eclectic mix of styles that come together, though the overall sound would be country/folk. Many instruments are used, which makes it really interesting. There is some Mariarchi songs. The overall effect is quite pleasant, as the music is really soft and easy listening. The lead vocalist has a folk singers voice and a woman often doubles up, adding some nice bakcing vocals.

Overall, it's about 3 1/2. I would have liked a bit more diversity of the tempo but the music is actually quite pleasant, interesting (definitely) and entertaining at times.

5 out of 5 stars bursting smiles translated into sound waves.......2001-02-14

wow! so glad to see others digging this band, too *grin* i'm used to always being the one to introduce this music so i thought i'd go ahead & throw my two cents in. i realized an old true love wasn't so true when he didn't understand the beauty of "sugarbush cushman" (#13) ~ i plan on having that song played at my wedding one day! the affirmation of "thanksgiving" (#8) really did help me to see the scars on my skin as a map of the places i've been. it seemed as if someone had peeked into my own shoebox with the lyrics of "big beautiful spoon" (#5) & not only do they sing an ode to the joys of "spending the day in the shirt that you wore" (#7) but they infuse it with the sound of a playing card tickling the spokes of a bicycle wheel! poi dog's style seemed to change over the course of time, but this album & their original release are two must-haves for anyone interested in feeding love to their heart!

2 out of 5 stars secular humanism... snooze.......2001-02-13

The music sounds nice and happy, otherwise this would get one star. "U-Li-La-Lu" is about the only song on here that I ever want to hear again. The lead singer sounds like he's wearing a clothespin on his nose. The lyrics are narrow-minded, naive, and annoying: "this great big world is for everyone" indeed. This CD is probably great if you have an over-idealistic, socialist worldview. Oh yeah, and you should be an atheist.

5 out of 5 stars Some very important healing and inspiring songs.......2003-01-30

I like Libby Roderick a lot. She has a style of singing that makes her so familiar - it always feels as though she's singing frankly and right to me. Maybe that's because the instrumentation is so soft that her voice really stands out, unemcumbered. Or maybe she just has a cheerful tone to her voice, or maybe she just has a really warm soul that comes across on every song. I just know that her voice always sounds like it's right in the room with me.

THINKING LIKE A MOUNTAIN is one of her best albums, I think. This and IF YOU SEE A DREAM. You kind of need both. This one has some absolute keepers for Libby Roderick fans:

GO is an incredible song about letting people go if you really love them: whether it's a lover or a child or even a parent. It's touching.

IS THAT WHAT YOU REALLY WANT tears me up every time, as it's just a song basically asking that question: Whatever it is you're doing - is that what you really want? Sometimes I need to hear that one.

And LOW TO THE GROUND is warm, healthy, grounding song about living life simply - every now and then I need to be reminded of this.

THINKING LIKE A MOUNTAIN is definitely an essential to a Libby Roderick collection!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is thoughtfully poetic, while being fun to listen to.......1999-04-16

My daughter gave me this CD for Christmas because WYEP radio in Pittsburgh, PA played a song from it that she knew I would like. This particular track is about living close to the earth, which Libby Roderick obviously does. Also, while my daughter is in graduate school, my husband and I are the loving care-takers of her cat named LIBBY that adopted my daughter when she was living in Libby ,MT. Many of the tracks on this CD reminded me of a much loved friend, so when she moved way a few months ago I gave it to her. Now I HAVE to buy my another - I miss hearing it. I'm so glad that my daughter sought out this CD and introduced me to Libby Roderick, who I feel like I know. Libby Roderick writes words that touch and wraps them in wonderful melodies.

5 out of 5 stars Down to earth song's on relationships........1998-12-26

After listening to this CD I found my self rethinking my place in this world. I have been a fan since 1992. I have yet to find a track that I don't like. Her songs are "Chicken Soup for Soul" in music. When I need a pick-me up I put headphones on, and loose myself in a wonderful world of sound. Try it you will like it.
