The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

Definitive.......2007-07-27
Beautiful! Even friends who've never cared for opera love this one. A tonic at the end of a grueling day, a weekend afternoon introspective, a late-night lead-in to a flight of dreams ... a whisper of angels.
great choice.......2007-01-11
this was a gift for family. family member loves album quality and selections.
Brilliant offering.......2007-01-10
Amici Forever is suberb in every way. Their arrangements are exceptional and the original lyrics are perfect poetry.
Easy Listening.......2006-09-21
Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.
Very Relaxing Music.......2006-09-11
I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Customer Reviews:
OK, just not what I thought.......2007-04-26
I was hooked on the genre by "East Village Opera Company", and this group has some similarities, but they're closer to traditional opera by vocal production style, so I didn't appreciate them quite as much. As with most opera singers, their technique is admirable, and it's the sort of thing you'd like, if you liked that sort of thing.
Perfect singers.......2006-03-30
The first time ever I saw this group "Amici forever" as they were singing "Unchained melody", I have confused that song like classical music. Because, it was very familiar. Actually, I didn't know exactly what's that song that moment. Finally, I knew that song is popular music I used to sing. So, laughed myself.
It was brilliant and great performance I ever heared before.
I bought DVD, too. And I recommended my friend and he also felt their singing like me. He said great and thanks to me.
Amici going from strength to strength.......2006-03-23
AMICI FOREVER ARE THE ORIGINAL OPERA BAND - all others are just 'pretenders to the title'.
I have just read the review by Bob - to clarify this Special Edition is the same as the original version with a couple of added extra tracks - hence Special Edition so there obviously is not much of a difference!!
Having said that, the extra tracks are beautiful, but Amici are best appreciated live on stage where you can really appreciate their individual styles, which then blend together.
If you want to hear different tracks then buy Defined there second Original Album and not a re-issue as is this Special Edition Opera Band.
There is now talk of a 3rd Album which I await in anticipation.
A Real Disappointment.......2006-03-19
After really enjoying the Amici Forever album, I went shopping for another Amici album and found this one. There really is no comparison between the two. I've tried listening to it several times to see if I'm missing something, but somehow the selections and arrangements seem more appropriate for the Lawrence Welk generation than anyone interested in a spicy little opera troupe. I was very disappointed.
Opera Band .......2005-09-01
This CD is outstanding and I enjoy listening to it over and over. I even have one in the car and one in the house so I can have easy access to listening to this CD anytime.

Not the Perfect Folk Album.......2006-12-04
I have to disagree with the reviewer who calls this the best folk album ever. (I was 27 when it was released.) I don't know what my pick would be but it would probably be Woody Guthrie or Cisco Houston. Nonetheless, this is a fine album and worth your money, better than his second, but not as good in my opinion as the two he made after he left Vanguard, which I wish someone would reissue as CDs. Calling them folk music is a bit of a stretch. The last 2 albums he made of which I am aware, one on Adelphi and the other a collection of other writers and traditional but no Sky originals, are mediocre. But the first four albums should be on CD now, and you should buy all of them. I know I would.
Great album but there is more..............2006-10-25
This is great stuff, but there is another (I think) Patrick Sky track that I cannot find which among the most amusing folky tunes I have ever heard. It was titled either "The Wreck of the Titanic" or "The Ballad of Jack Johnson", a talking blues format. Powerful, ironic, amusing. Anybody know where I can find it? I thought it was on this album.
The Perfect Folk Album .......2005-12-29
Way back when I was a little bitty boy (alright, I was 25) I decided it was time I started to seriously get into folk music, and I asked a friend who knew all about it where I should start. He didn't hesitate - Patrick Sky, he told me, and he described the self-titled 1964 Vanguard album as "the perfect folk album". Well, that was in 1979. It's now 2005, and I have acquired and listened to a lot of folk albums in the last quarter century, and I'm here to tell you that my friend was 100% spot on - Patrick Sky is still "the perfect folk album".
The album starts with his self-penned rambling song, Many A Mile, which was later recorded by Buffy Sainte Marie, among others. There is something about this song that kinda makes you want to start a long journey. "I damn near walked this world around, another city, another town; the only home I ever knowed was a suitcase and the open road. And it's many a mile I've spent on this road, it's many a mile I've gone..." The delivery is tender, almost as though he were caressing the words; the melody wistful and plaintive.
For the second track, he immediately switches gears, and we get "Hangin' `Round" a light hearted comical "break-up" song, whose humor is both light and graceful at the same time. Love Will Endure is as gentle and tender as Hangin' Round is playful. "Reuben" is the obligatory harmonica tune, and like every other tune here shows his guitar skills and vocal prowess in the best possible light. Rattlesnake Mountain, a tongue-twisting fun-filled epic comic narrative about the fate of two star-crossed lovers will have you playing it again and again just to catch all the words. I like songs like that, and have actually typed the words out so that when friends ask "What did he just say" when this album is playing in the background, I can actually show them.
"Everytime" is the perfect love song, hauntingly beautiful and stunningly simple. Come With Me Love is the perfect song to follow Everytime.
Nectar of God is so powerful that it defies description, and is probably the high point of the album. The Ballad of Ira Hayes, which was also covered by Johnny Cash (but less effectively) is easily the second best track on the album, maybe first if you're not bowled over by Nectar of God.
Words Without Music is music without words, and Wreck of the Old '97 is, I suppose, a nod to those who insist that a folk album must contain some traditional folk songs. If that's true, it's some nod, for it's one of the best recordings of it I've ever heard (including the celebrated version by Ramblin' Jack Elliott).
If you are just discovering folk music, Patrick Sky is indeed a good place to start. If you are a folk aficionado and somehow have not come across his first album until now, trust me, he ranks right up there with the best of them.
I'm glad it's still available.......2005-07-13
I know that practically every item reviewed on Amazon has 4 or 5 stars, because people usually review things that they like, but this is really wonderful music. I remember particularly the guitar accompaniment to "Love Will Endure," with its dissonant f-sharp in the bass against a C-major chord. This album is one of my all-time favorites.
an enduring classic.......2001-09-22
Though little remembered today, long retired from the music business, Patrick Sky recorded two classic Vanguard albums which are among the most artistically vital recordings of the 1960s folk revival. In this, the first of them (the second, A Harvest of Gentle Clang, has yet to be reissued), he proved himself a masterly interpreter of traditional material and a talented composer of original songs. In the former category is his brittle reading of "Reuben," a post-Civil War song of murky origins and many variants, its lyrics conjuring up cryptic images of loss, distance, and violence, leaving it to the uneasy listener to fill in the blanks. Sky's own composition "Nectar of God" is an overlooked masterpiece, as good as any Dylan song of the period, as emotionally compelling as the best of Townes Van Zandt and John Prine. With his dry, laconic vocal style, accompanied on all but two cuts by solo acoustic guitar (with occasional harmonica), he proves that great music does not depend on walls of sound and state-of-the-art studio technology. To me this record sounds as powerful now as it did when, thousands of albums heard since, I first put it on my record player more than three decades ago and was touched by its understated beauty.

Customer Reviews:
Hard to believe Pat would give his own album five stars!.......2006-07-02
I guess if Pat knew that he wasn't going to get any money he wouldn't have tried so hard!
As funny as Ann Coulter.......2006-06-30
No way that this isn't the most funny album to come out of the 60s. Like it is so funny, making fun of feminists and liberals. Patrick sky was the Ann Coulter of the 60s!!!
Wholesome family values set to music!.......2005-10-06
It's too bad the author of this brilliant album never recieved any royalties. The Adelphi website makes no mention of this, rather only that this album is a must have. Such music and satire is what's known as 'Old American'.
Being that Mr. Sky was ripped-off by the record company, I'd like him to know that the LP in my possession since 1975, was stolen out of the back of a vagabond group of hippies' VW van. Therefore, no record company was enriched by my acquiring his work.
Further, I'd like Patrick Sky to know that his future remains hopefull. For someday soon I shall be thrusting this CD deep into my waistband, before briskly rambling out the door of some unfortunate retail music establishment.
I recommend this album for its excellent humor, which nearly rivals that of my favorite curdmudgeon in Ambrose Bierce.
Songs that deserved to be forgotten.......2005-09-14
It's hard to believe that we live in a world where one must pay $70 to find a CD copy of Phil Och's "Greatest Hits," yet this album remains accessible at a reasonable price. Patrick Sky mentions that he didn't get any royalties from this, which is sad in some ways, but perhaps deservedly so in other ways, since upon hearing it, many will ask, "Why did he bother?" or "Who needs this?" or "Can I have my money back?" It wasn't too funny in the 70s, and hasn't aged particularly well. There are a few chuckles, to be sure, as Patrick Sky is too talented to let the listeners down completely, but, gee whiz, most of this is just plainly stinks. If you like Patrick Sky's folky stuff, get his other albums, which really are worthwhile and certainly deserve more than their cult status. But beware of this attempt at being the lefty-male folk world's "Cheech n Chong."
Pointed Offensiveness.......2005-06-14
Recorded during the Nixon administration, _Songs that Made America Famous_ still has the potential to offend, even in a world that tolerates _South Park_, gangsta hip hop and the current U.S. president. As an example of its satire, consider Mr. "H. Bromovitz," which Sky sings to the tune of "Mr. Bojangles." To make a point about ethnic stereotypes, Sky replaces the minstrel stereotyping of "Mr. Bojangles" with a stereotype of a Jewish storekeeper, and thus underscores how offensive a song "Mr. Bonjangles" is, when you think about it. _Songs that Made America Famous_ will disgust many. It makes use of profanity and ethnic slurs in its satire. The album's MAD-magazine-style cover is a good indicator of its content if one imagines a more offensive MAD magazine for twisted grown-ups. _Songs that Made America Famous_ is an education in satirical songwriting from a man capable of profoundly sick humour. I don't hand out 5 stars very often, but this highly repugnant collection deserves it.
