Big Noise from Waimea and Beyond.......2007-06-29
I bought these CD second, even though it was the first one released. Again I really enjoyed it as well, some great stuff here. Here you'll find Jim Messina(pre-Loggins & Messina)with his group the Jesters. Also a couple of great songs by a group called the Chandelles(El Gato & the Jetster) It pays to read the liner notes, you really get some great info into the time period and what was going on with theses groups. Also, a couple of songs from the hard to find "Original Surfaris" first Surf album. And the story behind them and the more well known So. Cal group we're all familiar with that released "Wipe Out", "Surfer Joe", etc..If you love the California West Coast sound, start collecting these CD's. It will help you fill in the musical gaps.
Surf Music.......2007-03-13
Does not do well at all in the digital cd system in my car. Sounds horrible. Needs remastering to conform to the new systems.
Lost Legends of Surf Guitar Vol1.......2005-09-25
Hard hitting, laid back style and makes you ready to catch the next big wave!
Worth the purchase....great tunes!
great compilation of lesser known surf music.......2004-08-25
.........my title says it all. Great stuff here by some of the lesser knowns. But great nevertheless. If you like surf music, get this. I probably have over 70 CD's of surf music and this is one of the best. 'Nuff said.
60's surf trip!.......2004-04-11
This is excellent collection of songs. The songs are very lively and entertaining. The most stunning thing about this CD is the reproduction quality. A lot of the songs sound like like they were just recently recorded, the audio is that good. You can hear the big influence Dick Dale had with other musicians on this CD. Their second CD "lost legends of surf guitar 2" has less surf oriented tunes with more hot rod songs, it makes me wonder if I should bother buying the third CD of this collection. The pyramids had one of the top surf tunes in "penetration" but the two pyramid tunes on here just sound like copies of that tune with the same minor sounding desending riff. This is an exciting collection of songs for all surf music fans. I also recommend their second CD even though it has hot-rod tunes.

the legend continues.......2006-02-19
This is the latest entry in the lost legend series and it is the best alblum since the very first lost legends alblum release. The songs match up and compliment each other better than any of the previous alblums in this series, so well that it sounds like a dance alblum. I give it a high recommendation for any surf music fan. Try alldirect.com for the best prices on this series of alblums.

Customer Reviews:
Really Cool Surf/Hot Rod Rock.......2007-06-29
I bought this CD first because it was reviewed as having a lot of Hot Rod rock on it(I am a big fan of Hot Rod Rock & am into Hot Rods myself). It does, although most of it is of the "Instrumental" variety with Hot Rod/Racetrack sound effects dubbed over the music in the background. That being said, it is a great CD with the pleasant suprise being a couple of unreleased Surfaris songs as well as some from David Marks(Early Beach Boys member)& his Marksmen. I particularly liked "Travelin", I could really hear the Beach Boys influence in that one. I also enjoyed "The Fugitive" from Jan Davis, right down to the baying bloodhounds. I was unfamiliar with him but enjoyed that one in particular. Also I liked a really funny song I hadn't heard before by the Tornadoes, "Shootin Beavers". These CD's are chock full of some classic old Surf/Hot Rod/California Sound songs, most long forgotten. Get it and Enjoy!
Very cool.......2004-05-18
Of the set, this is my favorite CD. But be aware this music is not for everyone. If you like crazy surf music complete with drag racing sound effects, barking dogs, and crazed killer laughs then stop here and push the "Add to cart" button! The sound quality is nothing short of fantastic. Even though it is in Mono, it is the best sounding compilation CD I've ever heard. If you never heard anything other than the Surfaris or the Ventures, you should lay down cash for this.
No Need To Panic!.......2003-11-12
Sundazed Records put a lot of time and effort into their surf guitar series. Although six of the twenty songs in this volume are hot rod instrumentals, they sound right at home among the obscure and previously unreleased surf instrumentals included in this collection. Jerry Cole And His Spacemen perform "Point Panic" as well as the Surfaris originally did. The Trashmen turn in a very good rendition of the Ventures' hit "Walk, Don't Run." "The Gremmie, Part 1" by the Tornadoes is a humorous song about beginning surfers. The Catalinas were a studio supergroup that consisted of guitarists Tommy Tedesco, Billy Strange and Jerry Cole, saxophonist Steve Douglas, and drummer Hal Blaine, with both Leon Russell and Bruce Johnston on piano! Their song "Banzai Washout" alone is worth the price of this CD.

Customer Reviews:
great reverb and wonderful guitar riffs.......2004-05-12
If you play guitar or like guitar music - or, you're a Quentin Tarentino fan, you'll enjoy this CD.
Lots of lost "nuggets" from the time when Rock and Roll meant an instrumental with a killer guitar riff that hooked you and left you humming it all day.
I never surfed, I'm too young to remember the early sixties - but - this music has influenced and continues to influence not just guitar players but all of our culture.
break out your old Telecasters and crank up your reverb and jam!
ride the wave.......2004-04-25
This is probably the easiest listening alblum of the trio of CD's. None of the songs stand out at all and it did not seem as exciting to me as the first 2 CD's of the set. It is all authentic surf music with lots of saxaphone. Althogh a bit borring I can't complain on the production and recording quality of this third CD. If you purchased the first 2 CD's of the set you may as well buy this one and complete this outstanding collection of 60's surf tunes.
Stomp Along To More Surf Instrumentals!.......2003-11-12
Richard Delvy was the drummer for the seminal surf instrumental band the Belairs, then played drums for the Challengers, before becoming a record producer. Sundazed Records selected surf instrumentals produced by Richard Delvy to come up with volume three in their surf instrumental series. "Cheater Stomp" by the Fabulous Playboys starts this collection off with a rocking, stomping surf instrumental. Thom Starr And The Galaxies do a great version of "Mr. Moto," an early surf instrumental hit for the Belairs. "Volcanic Action" by the Challengers rocks along like a tidal wave. The surfed-up versions of the standards "Shortnin' Bread" and "(They Call The Wind) Maria" sound right at home among the more traditional surf songs. "Spanish Moon" by the Travelers closes out this collection with a slow song, signifying that the surfers are coming ashore for the night. With the large number of famous and obscure surf instrumental bands that were around in the early sixties, I hope that Sundazed Records continues to release more volumes in this series.

Good Collection from the ex-Temptation.......2005-05-09
This is a good, budget find; Another of those "Motown Legends" CD's which collect a wide variety of tracks, including some hard to find songs.
Of course, David Ruffin was a great vocalist, though I preferred his work with the Temptations over his solo work. Upon listening to this collection, I found that he did some good solo work.
The 2 big hits "My Whole World Ended" & "Walk Away From Love" are here. I always liked "World" which always reminds me of a classic track from his Temptations days. When "Walk Away from Love" came out in the mid-1970's I have to admit that I didn't care for it. I always thought Ruffin's voice sounded worn out. Hearing the song again, it does have a good arrangement & is enjoyable in it's own way.
The "World" follow up single, "I've Lost Everything" is well sung, but the lyrics are awful and over wrought. Another single, the gospel-like ballad "I'm So Glad I Fell For You" is quite good, though slightly overproduced.
I always thought "Blood Donors Needed" seemed like a strange title for a song. It isn't a bad number, a kind of funky, "let's all help each other" Curtis Mayfield styled song.
I remember hearing the song "Off & On" which I think was done by somebody else. Ruffin's version is very nice - a good mid-tempo song. He also does decent versions of "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" & "Everlasting Love" (which inspired his friend, Carl Carlton, to record the song & have a huge hit with it).
Van McCoy was involved in some of these selections & his involvement in nicely evident, showing that he had a lot more in him than just the "Hustle".
So, a nice budget priced collection that displays David Ruffin's talents quite nicely. Worth checking out before investing in a more expensive collection.
"A Terrific David Ruffin's Sound".......2001-07-05
The songs of David Ruffin on this CD are so romantic and relaxing. Good songs to listen to when you come home from a tiring day of work. Walk Away From Love, My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me), Everlasting Love, Put A Little Love In Your Heart, and You're My Peace Of Mind are my favorites. I'd never heard the others before acquiring this CD, but they were just as great to listen to. I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone, especially if they are a David Ruffin's fan and even if they aren't, they surely would enjoy this CD.
Tall,Tan,Talented,Temptin.......1999-12-10
David Ruffin, one of r&b's pure singers, with this release has proved to us once again that he was one of the premier balladeers. The way David can go from a tender touch to an incredible wail in just a couple of notes, reminds us just how remarkable his voice was.
Soulful".......1999-07-28
This CD serves as a nice sampler to the genius that was David Ruffin. From 'Walk Away From Love" to "Off and On" the power in Ruffin's voice is ever present. Truly one of the greatest singers of all time.

Album Description
"While definitely lo-fi, Urban Legends perfectly capture that Herman's Hermits snap-pop groove." - PORTLAND MERCURY
"Urban Legends' indie pop is neither folk nor psychedelic--it most clearly draws on acoustic `60s pop--and manages to be uniquely more inventive than derivative." - SKYSCRAPER
"Mellow and melodic most of the time, this occasionally kicks into some powerful dynamic rock n roll ... reminds me of Built to Spill mixed with Superchunk." - PUNK PLANET
Over the last decade, singer-songwriter Hutch Harris has attracted the attention of those in search of the perfect pop song. And from his past bands (Hutch and Kathy, Haelah) and backing gigs (The Minders, Duster) to his current post as The Thermals' frontman, Harris has been on that quest himself. The road he's taken can best be witnessed through Urban Legends, the lo-fi project he started in his San Jose apartment in 1996. A string of seven-inches was punctuated by a split with Her Space Holiday, whose frontman Marc Bianchi released Urban Legends' 1999 full-length on his own label, Audio Information Phenomena. Throughout this time, Harris and his revolving lineup recorded at home and in friends' studios, leaving an embarrassment of unreleased riches. With even the official releases largely unavailable these days, Contraphonic campaigned to re-package and re-introduce some of the best Urban Legends material. Of Old Lost Days tracks the development of Harris's songwriting, compiling seven-inch tracks and unreleased material from 1997 to 2002. Songs range from early lo-fi nuggets to acoustic songs that foretell both the Hutch and Kathy album and the four-track beginnings of The Thermals. Of Old Lost Days is full of songs that were meant for the top of the charts, but were made in the corner of the basement.

While the passing of Jimmy Haig ultimately meant the end of Georgia Home Boy, questions about the bands music (and it's remaning members) still remained.
Did they have any unreleased music?
Is this REALLY the end?
What was the band working on toward the end of it all?
Will it ever be released?
For years, the final nine new songs recorded by GHB collected dust. When NNMaddox and 14mercy records opened the vault, a masterpiece was discovered.
Nine brand new jazz-inspired songs, including a tribute to Haig by Reverend Jenkins, and a reworked version of "Klaus Nomi Is Dead" and "The Whispers."
After re-releasing the bands previous work, and recognizing the public's demand for more, NNMaddox decided to let the world hear the final chapter of GHB.
Reverend Jenkins is featured on lead vocals for the first time on several tracks. There is a clear Fats Domino and Satchmo influence that solidifies the fact that the band, known for it's metal thrashers, was more than just a one-trick pony.
This album is about the love of music. And the love of a city, and more specifically, a club that brought the members of Georgia Home Boy so much joy and inspiration.
Like the band, The Shim Sham Club is now defunct. And like the band, the club didn't advertise itself as being anything it wasn't. It was unique and original. To put it simply: Shim Sham was one-of-a-kind.
NNMaddox, Todd Zombie, Jimmy Haig, and Ezell Jenkins didn't agree on many things. One thing they did see eye-to-eye on was meeting at the Shim Sham for drinks, music, and fun.

Ambient, meditational instrumentals on solo flute, shakuhachi, keyboard, and chimes by Conni St.Pierre recreate myths of the Lost Cities of Is and Lyonesse. Beautiful, magical, and relaxing - a musical escape from the stresses of the modern world.
Customer Reviews:
from "The Blue Divide" Volume 1 Issue 1, by Mike Ramirez.......2000-09-04
Conni St.Pierre is no stranger to the world of ambience. She's been on board since 1981, and continues to construct great underrated ambient recordings. As a classically trained piano, flute, and vocalist (although this is an instrumental album), she utilizes all of her skills to perform a quiet, yet outdoors-like experience. The listener is engulfed in Conni's mood-setting performance, and left there to decide where to journey to next. This album was created mainly for her interest in myths and legends. The press release states that while she was recording this album, she found a reference to the "Lost City of Is" in a book she read. With her connection with a scholar from the Internet, she began to uncover many of the lost city legends while creating this album. This is music for relaxing, studying (yes, I said studying), or to fall asleep to. The latter will only make you miss out on the experience Conni has to offer.
