5 out of 5 stars A favorite of mine for years.......2000-02-28

I'm so glad to see it's been released on CD! Redpath has such a versatile voice, and this collection shows off its full range, from the quiet grief of "Dancing at Whitsun" to the humor of "Captain Wedderburn's Courtship" to the angry "Blackwaterside." Redpath's voice, of course, is as near to perfect as they get, and her interpretations are equally remarkable: powerful and emotional, but never over the top.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......1999-12-17

If you are stirred by stories of Celtic romance, you will love this album. The music is moving and soulful, and sung with such clarity and emotion that you will be spellbound. You will find the tunes haunting you, with images of stormswept coastlines and spring meadows in bloom. If you liked Riverdance, read Rosamund Pilcher, or enjoy Charlotte Church's Welsh folk songs - you will ADORE Jean Redpath!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Perfection.......1999-12-07

With pure perfection Redpath succeeds in drawing the listener into her world of Scottish song. This CD is a perfect choice for those buying their first Redpath CD. Each selection makes one want to hear more. A warning! Wear a sweather to keep warm as you listen to 'the Terror Time'

5 out of 5 stars Your search for good Burns songs has ended.......2000-01-29

Jean Redpath sings the "inimitable songs of Burns" as if Rabbie himself is hovering over her shoulder. You're not likely to find too many singers more suited to her material than Redpath. Also, I needs must mention the first-rate musical accompaniments by Serge Hovey. All in all, the seven volume Redpath-Burns series is indispensible for lovers of song everywhere. Way to go, folks.

5 out of 5 stars A real treat!.......2007-02-23

Jean Redpath really has a knack for putting over a song, with simple accompaniment or even a cappella. This CD has as a theme the separation of people from their native places, and their relationships with the new places, as told simply with folk songs. It is sweet but not maudlin, solid but not large. It is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely - folk singing at its best.......1999-05-02

This is probably my favorite of Jean Redpath's CD's. Her sweet, lovely voice shines through on each of the songs. The songs are varied, some traditional, some more recent, all dealing with leavings or departures of one variety or another. Not a CD to pick you up when you're down - many of the songs are a little melancholy, but a wonderful disc for a rainy afternoon or a quiet evening.

This a wonderful album by the best of all scottish female singers. Jeans voice is so tender and smooth.

5 out of 5 stars Please Buy This CD!.......2000-07-29

Honest and Emotional. There is nothing like the singing of Jean Redpath. If you have any interest in scottish music you must own this. There are songs like Nicky Tams that will make you laugh so hard. Listen to the samples and put this on your list.

5 out of 5 stars Another triumph from Jean Redpath.......2000-02-28

Has she ever done anything that's NOT wonderful? She sings these songs better than I've ever heard them done by anyone else and makes it seem as easy as breathing. There are some great songs here-- old warhorses like "The Gypsy Laddie" and "She Moved Through the Fair," in simple, fresh interpretations, but also some songs that are much less well-known, though equally good. "The Kirk Swaree" made me laugh out loud. A great album!

5 out of 5 stars Effortless vocalism.......1999-05-27

As a teacher of voice and a singer myself, this performer has probably the most effortless voice I've ever heard. Her tone is always beautiful, her diction immaculate and her breath control truly astonishing. I don't think I've ever heard a voice to compare with Jean Redpath's. A joy from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Good honest folk singing........1999-03-01

Tied of hype and general trash in popular music? This CD gives simple but heartfelt Scottish folk songs. Many of the tracks are unaccompanied voice and some have understated guitar.Jean Redpath's voice is sweet but not cloying.Where are the melodies in current songs? The songs here have fantastic melodies. This CD is like a breath of fresh air: a fine voice and appealing songs.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Unforgettable.......2003-10-11

I first heard this album when I was in graduate school over twenty years ago, and I still remember its stunning power the first time I heard it.

It still has this deep, evocative resonance. Jean Redpath's rich voice, offset by the cello, and a powerful selection of traditional songs makes this, in my opinion, one of the great traditional music albums of all time.

4 out of 5 stars I had to have this cd.......1999-11-16

I checked this cd out at the library today and fell in love with it.The sound and words touch me deep.I had to have my on copy. Its a little sad,but makes me feel good at the same time.If you like this type of music buy this, you want regret it.I like her sound its...well it grabed me when I wasn't looking.

5 out of 5 stars Jean Redpath is a rare find.......2001-07-04

I first heard Redpath sing the song titled Faraway Tom on NPR's Thistle and Shamrock many years ago. I was blown away by her singing style, so full of emotion. That song has stayed with me since then and it has taken me many years to come upon this album. The rest of the album is superb as well.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, authentic, sung with understanding and love.......1999-04-11

I don't know if this is because Redpath is a woman or not, but she never sings with that gung-ho insistent cheerfulness that many male singers of Scottish/Irish songs have. Her interpretations are sensitive and lovely. This CD includes the lyrics--a pity that some of her other CDs don't.

Album Description

A collection of songs, traditional and contemporary, dealing with a woman's lot from age to age.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is EXCELLENT!.......2000-05-10

"Woman" is a beautiful combination of contemporary and traditional songs about women and their lot in life. As one listens to these songs, it becomes poignantly obvious that the we continue to face many of the same challenges and tragedies as those faced by women for centuries. Ms. Redpath's beautiful and haunting voice delivers a powerful, deeply evocative message to women and men alike. This CD is excellent by any standard. Other CD's by Ms. Redpath which rank among my favorites are: Moon's Silver Cradle, Think On Me, Summer of My Dreams and Still the Night.
