Great value.......2003-03-24
I was a little hesitant to buy a CD without seeing the artists, but it is the usual great collection of Windham Hill performers. A wonderful CD.
Great Spirits! Thanks again, Windham Hill........2002-10-30
This is a celtic masterpiece. A whimsical, soulful journey that will surprise your spirit. Every time I listen to this compilation I get goosebumps. Buy it today---the price is phenomenal.
Sheer delight.......2001-08-27
I've had this for a year, and it's absolutely lovely, excellent meditation music. "Gwenlaise" is, hands down, the most beautiful piece I've ever been privileged to hear.
Celtic Legacy.......2000-12-03
This compilation fits in the category of haunting and beautiful, akin to Conversations With God. I use it for massage and background music in my home office. The various artists keep it interesting but the overall mellowness ranks it high in my books.

Not many composers have worked with Elvis Presley, Cliff Richards, The Dubliners, and Planxty. Such is the strange musical world of Phil Coulter, who has recorded a series of Tranquility records that emphasize lush orchestral arrangements of various national folk music from Ireland to America, and on this title, Scotland. "Lush" is the operative word here, as he spins classic Scots melodies like "Ye Banks and Braes" and "Auld Lang Syne" into Mantovani-like flourishes for piano and orchestra, punched up with a fuzzy but gentle electric guitar and drums to give it "punch." It's the apex of Celtic nostalgia, and you will love it or hate it based solely on your tolerance for lots of airy strings, rippling piano lines, and reverbed, mountainous flute sounds. Coulter has had a lot of gold and platinum recordings over the years, so there's plenty of fans for his Celtic lounge act. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:
A.Barre.......2007-01-12
I love this CD. It is both relaxing and inspirational. This is one of Coulter's finest.
Moving.......2006-02-10
I first heard this album while walking through a small shop in Sisters, Oregon, and was quite taken with Coulter's interpretation of these Scottish songs. When I want to relax, this is one of the first album's I think of.
Great CD for Road Trips.......2005-08-27
This is probably our favorite CD to play when we're on the road. Wonderful arrangements of many familiar Scottish ballads. Whenever we come to a town with a Scottish name, we love to crank up the volume on "Scotland the Brave"!
Scottish Tranquility.......2005-07-29
This is, by far, one of the best musical recordings I have ever heard. I intend to get some more of Phil Coulter's albums. To put it simply - He's GREAT!!!
Stress relief.......2003-06-22
Very relaxing. Love to listen and play my mandolin along with this music. Great music for stress relief.

Very nice, relaxing music. "The Shores of the Swilly" is a remarkable song, done very well by Sinead O'Connor. The entire CD is top quality. If you enjoy soft, Irish piano music, this is the one.

Worth Buying.......2001-08-28
This follow-up CD is very similar in style to Volume 1. The composer is actually Ronan Hardiman(Lord of the Dance). Some of the tunes are familiar Celtic folk tunes which have Hardiman's magic touch added to them while others are original composotions. The entire CD is very enjoyable either as background music or for listening intently. If you liked Volume I or any of the other Hardiman CD's, my bet is that you will like this one as well.

So Strong.......2005-09-15
Celtic Tenors are marvelous. The only "tenor group" offering harmony. The material is beautiful and beautifully performed.
Celtic Music Meets the Boy Bands.......2003-11-09
If one looks at the jacket of the disk THE CELTIIC TENORS, the first impression is that the disk could also be called "The Three Irish Tenors goes boy band." The three Celtic tenors: Matthew Gilsenan, Niall Morris, and James Nelson, look rather young and hip, almost in a stereotypical way, and it is clear that the disk's first priority is to be a money maker. The obvious attempt at making a dollar (or in Ireland a punt or Euro) does not make the disk a waste. There are some very enjoyable musical moments on the disk, though nothing all that original or deep. The music ranges from popular tunes, traditional Irish music, and some light classical and operetta pieces. The musical highlight of the disk is an A Capella version of Barber's Adagio. This arrangement retains the piece's beauty as well as its haunting qualities. Though the song "Mull of Kintyre" is somewhat cheesy, it works on this disk and is one of the better tracks. The disk begins with a song titled "Nella Fantasia" a tune written by Emilio Morricone, and it's from a theme from his score of THE MISSION. According to the liner notes, the composer reluctantly allowed words for the piece. He should have held out a bit longer. The tune was first performed by Charlotte Church. It does not work for her, and it does not work for the Celtic Tenors either. Since the tune is so beautiful in the film, it's too bad it was not simply left alone.
This Is Not Your Ordinary Everyday Irish Tenor Album.......2003-10-02
Currently So Strong is my most favorite album. Unlike other Irish tenor albums I own, So Strong resonates unique total excellence achieved rarely by the blending of voices. It is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary Irish vocal styling. Every cut is a true treasure. Listening to "Mull of Kintyre" I defy anyone not to hum this Paul McCartney melody. "The Green Fields of France" is a beautiful anti war anthem while "Ag Criost An Siol" is as spiritual as any gospel. Tears swell with "The Town I Loved So Well". "Something Inside" has an addictive beat and "The Contender" and "A Love so Beautiful" are haunting without being melancholy. I garantee that you'll have the CD player on high volume and repeat for the folk dance tune "The Star of the County Down" and inspiring "Anthem". I do.
So Strong.......2003-04-07
I was watching public television and saw "The Celtic Tenors". The next day I found their CD, "So Stong". Finding voices of such obvious quality producing harmony so perfectly is rare. The first song brought me to tears and I wanted to stand and cheer. In fact, I did. In my opinion, "The Celtic Tenors" have absolutely clear voices and sing with "Heart" whether it's concerning the town they love or the love they let slip away. I have already suggested the CD to many friends who have immediately purchased one for themselves. What a treat, what a treat.
What a beautiful mix of songs.......2003-01-15
I bought this on a whim after listening to the 30 second bits on this site. It is now one of my favorite albums. I can't stop listening to it! I walk around all day singing bits from 'So Strong' & 'Mull of Kintyre'. Each tenor is given equal billing & their voices flow together so well. I'm now anxiously awaiting either a US tour or a new album. The first album, simply titled 'Celtic Tenors' is wonderful as well. If you love men who can really sing, you will love this album!

American hipster-harpist Deborah Henson-Conant was a featured player on 1998's Celtic Harpestry, and is best known for her jazz and 12-bar blues playing. On The Celtic Album Henson-Conant spreads her wings, stretching her talent to the traditional Celtic music she's always loved. "The Drunken Sailor" boasts a smooth jazz flavor, jamming with multiple harps, and with rhythm & bluesy solos. But Henson-Conant has a flair for the traditional too; her light touch blends beautifully with the flute of Peter Barnes on "Slieve Russell." Her electric harp, used exclusively on this album, has a warm jazz guitar feel on "She Moved Through the Fair" as well as on "Gussie's Great Escape." But this nontraditional style is what makes Henson-Conant special: leave the preservation of pure Celtic music to Sileas, Deborah Henson-Conant is leading us into modern ancient territory. --Karen Karleski
Album Description
The Celtic Album has many tunes familiar to Americans as well as some Celtic-flavored Henson-Conant originals and tunes she heard for the first time in her travels to Celtic lands. The all-instrumental album is varied inn arrangements blend traditional Celtic tunes with blues and, at times, startling harmonies with an energy that is truly Deborah Henson-Conant.
Customer Reviews:
The hippest of harps.......2005-12-01
I agree wholeheartedly with 2 other reviewers. In fact, they helped me decide to buy this album. It's a wonderful listen. DCH combines traditions, celtic and american, with a forward looking touch of her own. I love the improvisational commentary on some of the oldest celtic tunes. On this disk, she plays solo harp, multiple harps and on couple of instances her ensemble includes flute and voices. Her sporadic use of synthesizer is ever so subtle.
Let me let you on a secret. My order via this site was getting delayed, so I found out that you could order Deborah's music directly from her. Just visit her website, "hipharp", and for $15 plus shipping you can even have your CD signed. Enjoy!
A delight!.......2005-10-06
Had seen her in person & have been a collector ever since! Fantastic entertainer, uplifting music!!! All her works are a delight!
Fantastic Celtic inpired harpistry mixed with the blues!.......2000-06-30
I am always looking for new and unusual music (and musicians). Deborah Henson-Conant nicely fits the bill! She plays the harp. But, she plays it like nobody else! She plays improvisational jazz and the blues. And she puts on a most incredible show! See her in concert if you ever get the opportunity! Then, pick up this CD!
In 1998, Deborah was featured on the PBS special, "Celtic Harpestry," filmed at Lismore Castle in Ireland by the production company that created "Riverdance." She was so enthused that she went into the studio and recorded an entire album inspired by her Celtic adventures, her 12th CD, "The Celtic Album".

Customer Reviews:
Not my Sandy Denny.......2007-01-11
If you are a fan of the whole range of Sandy Denny's work and like English interpretations of the blues, then this collection is for you. However, if you're expecting those folk tunes (both traditional and contemporary) sung in Sandy Denny's absolutely splendid voice, then you will be grievously disappointed (as I was). I had hoped that this collection would yield some pleasant surprises, even though her sadly shortened output is familiar to anyone who has listened to her music over the past three-and-a-half decades. I respect her willingness to explore different realms of musical experience, but other than the first few Fotheringay tunes and the familiar refrain of the "Quiet Joys of Brotherhood" I was hard put to sit quietly and listen to the music. The vocal inflection and phrasing of the bluesy tunes, as well as her sometimes self-conscious use of caesura and rhythmic variation, were almost painful to hear. I recommend the 3-CD set of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" for anyone unfamiliar with Denny's work and ready to experience one of the most unique voices in the history of folk rock.
21st Century Mix Tape of Some of Denny's Finest.......2005-01-07
Especially popular in England, the 'mix tape' CD is proliferating everywhere. These cd's, often a freebie with a magazine, are a personalized mix of new music (Tracks Magazine, Word Magazine), themed music (MOJO, Q from England) or, in this case, some of Sandy Denny's most moving interpretive work.
If you are new to Denny, go to Leif and Liege/Fairport Convention, or to the No More Sad Refrains Anthology. This Collection is for obsessive fans, like myself, who get a kick out of another fan's mix of her work.

Customer Reviews:
An artist with lots of potential.......2004-05-09
Jonathan Adams' preformance of Sanz Canarios is what first drew me in. It's full of joy and energy with variations of color and volume that no other artist that I have heard do canarios which includes John Williams (very straight forward and very fast), Yepes (slower but still straight forward), Parkening (fast and full of energy similar to Admas' in many ways but not as colorful. Adams is the only performer who uses variation in color that make the piece even more interesting. This goes the the entire CD as well. The only draw back is that Jonathan Adams does not quite have the polish of the other artist mentioned. What Adams lacks in polish he makes up for in passionate performances. He plays an exicting Koyunbaba movements I and IV, I just wish he had included the entire piece.
The recording is variable but very good. It's too closely miked on the New Age type of music and slightly to close for the classical selections.
I would love to hear more of this artist hopefully playing more classical works and complete works not just movements of works and have a little bit better recording by placing the mics a little further away from the guitar with more room ambiance.
Overall a very good first CD. 4 stars.

The King of the Pipers for many.......2003-11-29
Rowsome was from a family of pipers, and his grandson is playing away now, making records and teaching the pipes like his father and grandfather. Leo's father, uncles, and grandfather were all reckoned as superb pipers in their own right, exponents of a rolling, smooth playing with a great deal of sweetness and melody to it. The genesis of this perhaps was in musical lessons his father and uncles received from a German musical teacher, whose name was, are you ready, Herr Jacob Blowitz; instructed on violin, piano, and trumpet, they went on to wide acclaim on the family instrument, the Union pipes, as they were known in those days; although they preferred another name for it, the Irish Organ, a reference to its harmonic capabilities. Leo became instructor on the pipes at the School of Music in Dublin in 1919, and made his first records in 1925; this academic side of his nature shows through clearly in his music, with its beautiful, ever-melodic settings of tunes, cleanly articulated chanter playing ("open" or legato with staccato used to give the tune shape), always in perfect tune, and most famously or infamously, his constant playing of the regulators for chordal accompaniment, utilizing them to their fullest with changes of rhythmic emphasis, the occasional pedal tones, and the complete range of their harmonic potential, including the use of C on the bass as as a suspended fourth in tunes in G, a lovely sound which is largely eschewed by modern pipers. Full of spirit and charm, Leo's music is the very model of piping; neglected or disdained by many since the revival of piping in the late 60's, more and more are discovering the joys and amazements of his music these days. While the two LPs this CD covers rightfully should have been followed with a third, covering the astonishing sets of reels he put down on record in 1948, these will do to bring his magic music back to new audiences.
The King of Pipers Does it again!.......2001-03-08
This album is typical of the fantastic uilleann pipe playing of Leo Rowsome. Noted as the best player and maker of uilleann pipes of his time, this album is no exception. I highly reccomend this to anyone interested in the pipes or in traditional Irish music.
