Editorial Reviews
From the Label
The collection of music and readings contained on this CD popularize the mood and tone of the Civil War from the standpoint of the average individual.
Product Description
The wail sent up by our "new birth of freedom" became the music that appears here. We did not learn these songs. They are a part of our American soul. We have always known them, felt their presence hidden just below the surface of our consciousness. They whisper to us across a span of over 135 years, describing a people caught up in a whirlwind of death and destruction unparalleled in the American experience. The indelible impression left in these songs and readings is the legacy of all Americans.

Amazon.com essential recording
After Audra McDonald's audacious recording debut with Way Back to Paradise, a collection of newly composed, highly sophisticated theater music, this new disc dominated by Harold Arlen standards would seem to be a retrenchment. On closer inspection, not so. Anybody who would risk comparisons with Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland by recording "A Sleepin' Bee" and "The Man That Got Away" isn't playing it safe. McDonald comes out fine, though, not because she's better than her elders, but because she's different. What pop singers do with rhetorical flourishes, the operatically trained McDonald does with color and phrase shape, much more so here than on Way Back to Paradise. Indeed, she is in radiant voice. The differences multiply with the orchestrations, which give a Coplandesque slant to "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home." Then there's the sequencing, which follows "The Man That Got Away" with "Somewhere" from West Side Story. On a dramatic level, it's a progression from devastation to healing. On a symbolic level, the signature song of gay-cult icon Garland is followed by the unofficial anthem of the AIDS era--with staggering impact. Not everything is great: sometimes McDonald runs dry of interpretive ideas. But at least five cuts are each worth the price of the CD. My favorite: "Come Down from the Tree," a playful gem about love and change cut from the Broadway show Once on This Island. --David Patrick Stearns

Glorious Audra.......2007-07-13
There need to be more stars than five for this one! Incredible voice, phrasing and music arrangements.Absolutely beautiful!
Fine voice but not one that resonates with me - a detail often overlooked..........2007-06-29
Here's the thing about music and those who listen to it. There are some wonderful singers out there and I think Audra McDonald is one of them. But listen to her sample tracks (or, for that matter, anyone's sample tracks, if you can) BEFORE buying this.
Her voice is a bit too high for me, not warm and melodic. Others may disagree and so I hesitate to be negative because I do think what appeals to some will leave others cold. I listened to this CD in a store as well as on Amazon, just to make sure I wasn't hearing the sound wrong. I can't say she does a thing wrong and yet her style simply doesn't reach me the way others do, even those with lesser voices. But then I guess thats what makes any work, from music to books, so personal. Very few have a universal appeal.
A joyful, sexy sound, with look and spirit to match.......2006-06-21
I've owned this CD for so long and had to stop listening to it when a very jealous girlfriend of mine was around that I forgot to share with others how good it is. Audra McDonald is already a legendary figure on Broadway with four Tony awards, exemplifying the complete package of drama and artistry she is on stage. Yet that voice, which could just as easily have taken her to the Met as it did to the theatres downtown, is in rare expressive form on this CD tribute to Harold Arlen and others.
I don't want to spoil the experience of the songs by going into detail. Just know from the moment you hear "Anywhere I Hang My Hat is Home" with her beautiful voice, wonderful technique and deeply poignant subtext that celebrates her ability to interpret to the point of personalize the songs she sings, you will be more than satisfied with this CD.
Not Judy Garland or Barbra Streisand yet? Don't worry, she's got time. And she's on her way.
Terrific Album, Beautiful Voice.......2005-05-19
I am most definitely an Audra McDonald fan. I saw her live recently at Linclon Center in the American Songbook Series and was blown away.
This CD is a must buy for anyone who loves musical theater or great singing. Ms. McDonald is able to take a song you've heard a million times and make you feel like you've never heard it before. She is able to capture the emotional content of a song without making it sappy or overly sentimental. From Showboat's "Bill," which she sings with child-like wonder, to "The Man That Got Away," which drips with lament and regret, every song in this collection strikes the right chord.
An amazing voice and a gift for acting make her one of the best entertainers around. If you get a chance to see her live, don't ask questions, just do it. In the meanwhile listen to this wonderful CD.
Golden Ears.......2005-05-05
A Moose from California compared Audra's "Bill" with one done by Jane Monheit. I took his advise and listened to both. Audra sounds like a church choir singer making an attempt at jazz. The Moose from California has a tin ear when it comes to quality and soul. This is a sad recording as far as jazz goes. It should be in the cabaret bin. Absolutely!!!

It's good to have the clean-vowelled, fresh-voiced Cambridge Singers back in action with composer John Rutter, who demonstrates once again his considerable talents as a choral director. Here, he also had his work cut out arranging 15 of the tracks (and composing one other). Divided up into various categories, such as "the Eucharist" and "folk hymns," this album will delight the confirmed hymn enthusiast, provided that he or she doesn't insist on the pure, as-written product. Rutter's reworkings range from the bold and brassy (occasionally deliciously over the top--what would Martin Luther have thought of the naughtiness in "A mighty fortress is our God"?) to those of harp-accompanied simplicity, not least in the charming lines of "Be thou my vision." Several tasteful descants are models of their kind. There are some surprises at which to chuckle. For example, not the expected brass and organ job on "We plough the fields and scatter," but a dainty, tripping harp accompaniment to the familiar melody, such as Haydn might have wedded to a Scottish folksong. Occasional numbers might be too saccharine for some tastes, but there are cunningly placed samples of Gregorian chant, Tallis, and Gibbons to provide contrast and cleanse the palate. --Andrew Green

What can I say !.......2007-02-15
Having listened to this twice... It is difficult to find words for something so Glorious. It doesn't almost hurt, but I almost exploded in heavenly rapture several times.
You will need to get two. It is not music that you will want to keep to yourself.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-02
'The hymns heard on this disc span over 15 centuries of the history of Christian Europe, and have been chosen simply to make up a varied program which can be pleasant to hear.' Some items are accompanied by organ, some by harp where a lighter sound was more appropriate. Some are unaccompanied as in the Gregorian hymns, and five of the grandest hymns are given festival arrangements using brass, timpani, percussion and organ. Although the perspective of this album is Anglican,it must be noted that the Anglican hymn tradition has been notably eclectic. Hymnody is forever changing. 'This album does NOT attempt to reflect the most recent changes-the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses has been well taken care of elsewhere, and time alone will tell whether there is any lasting worth in this most drastic upheaval of worship style.' Therefore, it is timely to reflect upon the immense riches of hymns built up over so many centuries, when they are at great risk of neglect. John Rutter has produced an amazing number of arrangements as well as original songs, and they are all first-rate. Choirs throughout the world (who are skilled enough to sing them)take great pleasure in working with his selections, and audiences, regardless of listening experience seem to enjoy them. They are tuneful, clever and unusual!!!
The Cambridge Singers number : 10 female sopranos,2 male and 4 female altos, 7 tenors and 8 basses. They sing extremely well with clear consonents and well-shaped vowels and plenty of gusto. I miss the boy sopranos that usually sing in the British choirs, but that's only a personal preference, and it surely is not Rutter's preference, because I have never known him to make use of them. A truly inspiring recording, nonetheless.
Another Rutter Keeper!.......2003-02-17
Rutter has won many fans throughout the world for his passionate, creative yet tasteful contributions to church music. Here is a hymn collection with several traditional choices along with Rutter originals.
Several comprise Rutter's remakes, which is most cases are very diginified and not at all distractive to the thrust of the original. The orchestration is superb, and the Cambridge Singers of course provide outstanding choral might.
Well worth consideration to the church music collection.
worship of god made mostglorius in this cd.......2002-04-30
i was 1st introduced to john rutters music on a radio program... when i 1st heard the arrangement of christ the lord is risen today presented in this cd i pictured a grand celebration of the solemn mass of the resurection of our lord and pictured in particular the grand procession i pictured this being celebrated... this hymn and cd does as best as humanly possible represent the great glory of god and does as its title suggests sing with the heavens and for you fellow traditionalists this is a strongly recomended cd
Heavenly Music.......2001-10-15
The hymns of SING, YE HEAVENS represent 1500 years of music in the Christian church. Pure and rich are these hymns by the Cambridge Singers with their perfect diction that leaves nothing for improvement and their tone quality that envelops the listener. The beauty of the harp, the organ, and the brass adds to the pleasure this CD brings to the listener's ear and heart.

You don't hear many live Christmas records, but then it's seldom you get as many operatic powerhouses under one Austrian town-hall roof with a full orchestra and large children's choir. Placido Domingo (who dominates the proceedings with his commanding tenor), Britain's own Sarah Brightman, Belgian Helmut Lotti, and Italy's Richard Cocciante raise the roof on this international gala recording from 1997 under the skilled baton of Steven Mercurio and choir master Elizabeth Ziegler. Chief among the performances during this black-tie event are the Domingo-Cocciante duet of "Walking in the Air," Brightman's chilling "First of May," (the Bee Gees song) and a strange medley of European-American songs, traditional and pop, ranging from Roger Whittaker and John Lennon and Yoko Ono to Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson and a handful of traditional Welsh, German, and Spanish works, plus that Yank standard "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." For button-down audiences only who still can appreciate pop songs in expanded and exploded arrangements. --Martin Keller

A Gala Christmas in Vienna.......2007-01-15
Excellent Christmas music with some very good vaiety of voice and composition.
Helmut Lotti and others sing for Christmas.......2005-09-24
I am a great fan of Helmut Lotti. This particular recording is one my husband I already own and enjoy. We purchased this one for our adult daughter. Each of the performers on this disk are first rate and the recording as a whole is well worth adding to one's holiday pleasures.
Great for Christmas Time!!.......2004-02-26
Beautiful concert, with a lot of Spirit, Sarah Brightman voice is wonderful, this 4 singers give soul to the concert, is great for christmas time, I love this CD & also the DVD amazing..
Still my favorite Christmas album.......2004-01-08
I read all the other reviews and just had to add my thoughts. This is still my favorite Christmas album after listening to it for 5 seasons now. I can hardly wait for next Christmas so I can enjoy it all over. Sarah Brightman is wonderful of course - wish I could find a separate recording of - First Of May - , wow!
If you like good Christmas music and the spirit of Christmas you will enjoy this album.
humorously horrible.......2002-12-24
This album is so wretched it made me laugh. In the store I looked at the artists and the songs and thought it would provide nice holiday music. I put it on when I got home and wondered if maybe Spike Jones had slipped in some joke tunes. I can't believe these people sound so bad. Sure, some of the numbers are very nice, but then you split a gut laughing at the others--or worse, cringing.

Very enjoyable!.......2002-11-05
The tunes in John Playford's The English Dancing Master have been recorded frequently and are a staple in English country dance circles. Jeremy Barlow and the Broadside Band present here some of the best renditions of these tunes that are currently available on CD. I strongly recommmed this CD for anyone interested in Renaissance music, country dance music, or just plain ole' fun music.

Don't miss this.......2001-07-31
"The Freedom Trilogy" is worth the price of the album -- an interweaving of Gregorian Chant and complex, exciting Gospel -- beautifully performed. One of the most exquisite things I have heard in a long time. Paul Halley was the organist at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City when the Paul Winter Consort was in residence. You can hear him play that fabulous instrument in "Missa Gaia" and the wonderful recording of the celebration of the Winter Solstice. I think after that Halley went out on his own to do the kind of thing you find here. A good story and wonderful music.

A rather presumptive holiday title, Simply the Best Christmas Album is an unqualified best--if you like classical, choral, and symphonic music. Marquee talent such as Placido Domingo, Natalie Cole, and Jose Carreras anchor the mix, abetted by the redoubtable London Brass, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Edward Higgenbottom & The Choir of New College, Oxford, and the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra. This two-disc, 36-piece set presents a broad spectrum of holiday pageantry that embraces familiar traditional works like The Nutcracker and more contemporary pieces from Sumi Jo and Linda Eder. From triumphant brass and angelic choirs to stirring string pieces and rich, lovely orchestral movements, Simply the Best sets an exquisitely festive mood. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Joyous surprises!.......2006-06-01
Every once in awhile I run across an album that excells, not because of the shining brilliance of one artist, but because of the collective impact of several. Here, in this album, are some little-known gems from Christmas music literature. I was captivated by the lilting and primitive joy in "Jesus, the Light of the World," which I had never heard before. Then there is Chanticleer and its rendition of Charles Ives' "Christmas Carol," a classic too little known. There are others. If you look for unique renditions of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas music to enhance the joy of the season, this album is a must-buy.
Simply the Best..........2002-11-19
The minute I heard Thomas Hampson sing the first few notes of Adeste Fideles, I knew I had to have this album. It is a marvelous compilation of Classical Christmas favorites (excerpts from the Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli Christmas Concertos and The Nutcracker) and standard Christmas favorites, as well as some of the lesser heard Christmas gems.
The vocal power on this 2 CD set is amazing as well--Broadway star Linda Eder, Thomas Hampson, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jose Carreras, Chanticleer, and numerous others. I usually purchase one Christmas CD a year. This was it for me this year--make it part of your holiday collection.

Good double CD at a good price.......2005-06-22
2 CD for only 6$ plus shipping and handling is a good price. The quality and the choices of tunes are good and the quality of recording is good too. The orchestras, the singers and the choirs are good too. So, if the titles of tunes please you, it is a good 2-CD boxset to buy. If you are an American, I am sure that you know all these tunes. If you are not an American, you will say to yourself : "I think that I have heard this song somewhere."

Customer Reviews:
Smashing Album.......2005-11-11
Any album that gives us Jason Graae singing "Smashing, New York Times" is worth having.
Great singers, not so great music.......2001-12-26
I love hearing songs from forgotten and lost musicals, and I enjoyed Unsung Musicals I, but I was disappointed with this one. "Lawyers" is easily the best song on the CD. Most of the other songs are ballads, and dull ones at that. (Admittedly, I am not a big ballad fan.) Looks like Bruce Kimmel's song selection process kind of flattened out here. Why, for example, did they choose a ballad from Foxy, when by all accounts the songs originally sung by Bert Lahr in that show were a lot of fun? On the other hand, the singers are very respectable and always worth listening to. Glory Crampton definitely needs more leading roles! My advice is to listen to the song snippets first, to determine if these songs are your thing.
Once again, unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-15
This is the second fine CD in the series of three. These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Lawyers" (from A Broadway Musical), "Everything in the World" (The Yearling), "Smashing New York Times" (also A Broadway Musical), "Run Cinderella" (Foxy), and "Phantom of the Opera" (title song from the Rupert Holmes show). There was a third CD in this series. If its not longer available, they should reissue it. Its on a par with the other two in the series.
A Must-Have for Musical Fans.......2000-03-25
The Unsung Musicals albums are a treasure for those who are "mega-fans" of musical theatre. All the songs share the tragic fate of being in a musical that just never made it on the Great White Way.
Some of the songs are somewhat cloying, such as "One Promise Come True." However, there are also some real gems, such as "Lawyers," which has some clever rhymes and a catchy tune. You also get the added bonus of hearing some great singers perform such as Sally Mayes, Rebecca Luker and Davis Gaines.
Overall, this recording is great for both its entertainment and its historical value.
