Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, timeless, Music.......2007-03-23
Wow, just wow. I found out about the Kafala Brothers on a compilation called "African Troubadors" and had to get their CD. by the way, you can listen to samples at other sites, do a google on them. Their music is so full of sadness, joy, hope and beauty, it's very powerful at inciting an emotional response, even without knowing the language.
They sing in Angolan languages as well as Portugeuse (the colonial power in Angola at the time)On some songs you can really hear the portuguese/latin influence in the guitar and singing techniques. But on the most beautiful songs (imo) like "Hô Muno Le Timba Liamome" and "N'Guxi" you hear beautiful African melodies and rhythms interwoven with the struggle and humanity of the human spirit.
Someone at another site characterized them as a bit like Simon and Garfunkle, and I'd say thats a fairly good comparison. I've read that most of the songs are born out of sadness and unfortunate events, and while the sound carries that feature, it also look towards the future with a joy and hope for the future. This is truly inspiring music that anyone can appreciate because it comes from the human spirit.
Soulful voices and guitar.......2001-12-27
Though they are only two, they make music that can certainly move thousands. Soulful, sad, rhythmic and hypnotic Angolan folk music at its very best. The Kafala Brothers simply employ guitar, flute and intuitive vocal harmonizing to convey their conflicted message of love, sadness and hope for their beloved country. "Benguela" is one of my favorites (I lived there and the Portuguese lyrics strike up visual imagery that forces me to sweetly reminisce). If you like soulful guitar and beautiful harmonies, then you will love this CD. Many of my American friends have been turned on to African music as a result of this CD. It also has funtioned well to tell a story of Angola by way of music alone.
