5 out of 5 stars Dazzling!.......2006-06-18

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this gem - you will love you for having done so!

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars - Top Rate CD.......2003-06-03

Reviews of this group are not sufficient without dropping a few names for comparison.

If Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey or Janis Joplin were alive today, they would be singing with the Uppity Blues Women. Truth to tell, with modern recording techniques on her side, these other ladies are no real match for Ann Rabson's booming voice and sexy piano work. Do Your Duty, The Clock and Life Goes On are easily worth the price of the CD.

There is really no choice but to rate this a full 5 stars. I would be disappointed if the average were anything less. This is the one - if you have made it this far and still don't own this CD, buy it today - here or someplace else, I don't care. Don't put this opportunity off till another time; do your duty!

5 out of 5 stars These ladies know how to sing!.......2001-05-29

I don't need a 1000 words - one will be sufficient... AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars Only a fool would pass these ladies up.......2001-02-24

I have always been a blues fan. One day while looking through Napster for new music, I came across these ladies. I was hooked. I immediately purchased every album they ever made. To call these ladies just another "band" is an insult to their talents. They are more a voice of today's women. Even though men will enjoy their rhythm and melodic overtures, only a woman can appreciate the true sultry heart felt lyrics. Even if you are not a blues fan, you are doing yourself an injustice by passing up this true bond of womanhood. We can all relate to what they are singing about. And fortunately, we can all laugh too. I applaud their ability to ignore the mainstream stereotypes and sing from the heart. I wish I could thank them in person for being the role model they have become for others and myself.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun.......2000-06-21

This is a great blues band and these songs were most of the best of the songs they played in the concert I attended. They can be a bit rauncy at times but the music is great and the lyrics can make you laugh out loud.

4 out of 5 stars I wouldn't call it their best, but I do listen to it a lot.......2004-09-16

The title says it all, pretty much.
I would say it's one of the best since they re-formed back in 1985 and is a good combo of new material, cover material, and older material.

Yes, you might ask yourself, do I need yet another version of Matty Groves or The Hiring Fair? And the answer is probably not, but these are good versions. And because they're acoustic, they're pretty much different than any other version out there.

The acoustic instrumentals are great, and I've love to see an album of just newly written instrumentals like Woodworm Swing and Mister Sands is in the Bulding.

Like I wrote, there are better Fairport albums out there, but I pull this one off the shelf quite a bit. And you can usually get it cheap used. It's worth it for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Still going strong..........2002-08-24

Jeez, ya'd think you'd be able to totally write these old geezers off as yesterday's news by now... But even this late in the game, the Fairporters are as capable a folk outfit as you're likely to find. This compact, four-piece edition of the band includes Simon Nicol and Dave Pegg, joined by guitarist Maartin Allcock and fiddler Ric Sanders; they open with a perky gypsy jazz number, and drift into a pleasant mix of trad and earnest folkie material. The second half of the disc is a live show recorded in December, '95... The whole album has a crispness and clarity of purpose that may surprise you! Don't be fooled by the unimpressive cover art; this is a disc well worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, as the title suggests.......2002-03-17

When drummer Dave Mattacks decided to make a little money going on tour with someone more popular, Fairport Convention decided to go the "Unplugged" route, with guitarist Maartin Allcock and bassist Dave Pegg going acoustic (Allcock plays bouzar, which I presume is related to the bouzouki, on much of the album) and no drums. The first half of the album was done in the studio, and includes James Taylor and Loudon Wainwright covers. The ballad "Lalla Rookh" is a highlight. The second half of the album is live, and many of these songs were done better by the same lineup on "In Real Time - Live '87". The live portion includes another Wainwright piece, the entertaining "The Swimming Song". This album seems to complete Fairport's decline from a rock band to a folk ensemble, especially when singer Simon Nicol continually explains to the live audience "and that's the chorus."

(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)

4 out of 5 stars A great recording........1999-12-17

A fantastic mix of old and new songs with some cover tunes thrown in. The production is wonderful and Simon's voice is great. These guys have been around and are still making viable music-let's give them the credit they deserve. A great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Fairport's best!.......1998-07-13

Like the title says, this is a mixture of Fairport material. "Matty Groves" is a sample of vintage Fairport. Songs like Loudon Wainwright's "Men" and James Taylor's "Frozen Man" were profitably borrowed.

Album Description

2006 digitally remastered reissue of this 1974 album by the British Glam/Rock superstars featuring bonus tracks. Slade's fourth studio album was conceived and recorded amid various touring and promotional activities in late 1973, Old New Borrowed And Blue is the sound of Slade at the height of their success striking out for new territory and blending their trademark foot-stomping rockers with a more mellow songwriting sensibility. The raucousness of 'Just A Little Bit' 'My Town' and 'We're Really Gonna Raise The Roof' were offset by the understated feel of 'Miles Out To Sea'. The honky-tonk piano-led 'Find Yourself Another Rainbow' was another pivotal melodic moment, while 'How Can It Be?' even saw the band venturing close to country-rock territory (an area that interested Noddy in particular) and the classic, crowd-swaying ballad 'Everyday' demonstrated a songwriting maturity that few had suspected was there - and became yet another top three hit. Slavo.

5 out of 5 stars REMASTERED AT LAST !.......2006-10-24

For the first time ever remastered and re-released with 4 bonus tracks (2 singles b-sides + their single Bangin' Man/She Did It To Me) appear on CD for the first time ever on official release. The correct label is SALVO (not SLAVO) which is a new British label and the batch of three Slade's re-releases is the first CDs this label ever released. Sound quality is better than on old regular issue of this famous 1974 album released on CD way back in 1991 on Polydor. Contains a very beautiful and informative booklet with lots of unseen colour snaps including covers of their singles released in different countries and nice essay written by Classic Rock Magazine man Dave Ling. Highly recommended for all Slade fans. You may at last replace your old CD with this one ! The slipcase also inserted into additional paper jacket wich adds nothing to the release itself because it exactly repeats what is already shown in the booklet. From the other hand if somebody wants this album in paper jacket as mini-LP version try to find this only in Russia. I now own both versions. Originally released on LP in 1974 in the US under different title with slightly different track list. This is the original album with original title as was released in the UK but now revamped on CD with bonus tracks. Please note that "I'me, I'm Now And That's Orl" originally appeared on CD only on long out of print 2CD compilation "The Slade Story", A-side "Bangin' Man" did not appear on any LP in UK, but in US it appeared on american version of "Slade In Flame" instead of "Summer Song (Wishing You Were Here)" in the UK. On CD "Bangin' Man" can be found on "Wall Of Hits" compilation in 1991. The hidden pearl here is very beautiful power-pop singalong ballad "She Did It To Me" never appeared on any LP/CD which rivals to "Everyday" a hit #3 in UK from this album. Could be easily the A-side and a huge hit. I'm now eagerly waiting for the new version of "Slade In Flame". My minor quibble - even new release does not contain the original fold-out sleeve with (almost) full lyrics and bandmembers on the background which is here on Russian paper jacket version.

    Product Description

Julian Yeo is a Jazz/Cabaret singer currently residing in New York City. An Australian of Asian descent, Julian was exposed to a wide array of music while growing up. However, he has always been fascinated by singers from the 20s to the 50s. This CD is an eclectic compilation of new compositions and standards tied together with a common theme - Love. Perhaps the title of the CD sums it up. There is a certain quality in his voice that sounds like vintage recordings you hear from a gramophone (OLD); at times, his voice even evokes a certain nostalgia that we hear in singers of the past like Fred Astaire, Dick Haymes and Rudy Vallee (BORROWED). Yet there is something undeniably hip about his renditions that are refreshingly unique (NEW). The directness in his delivery together with the manifestation of his love for these songs make this CD distinctively 'Julian Yeo' (BLUE). Piano: Jesse Gelber; Bass: Jon Flaugher; Drums: Kevin Dorn; Vocals: Julian Yeo All arrangements by Jesse Gelber. "...a well crafted cd with passion and style, standards freshened up in a very stylish sophisticated manner. Everything about this cd says that there is passion expressed in every track and a total conviction to the Jazz idiom."; Peter Merrett, PBS FM Melbourne Australia "We love Julian Yeo!" 5 out of 5 stars Fantastic little something different.......2007-05-28

This is definitely not a generic vocal Jazz CD that one would hear nowadays. The vocal is distintive with a tone that reminds me of the retro crooners - something that I simply love and cannot resist. The music is so charming, the 'so right' combination of old vocal styling and modern musical arrangements make this CD a very captivating listen. What a surprise find!

    1 out of 5 stars Dated material.......2007-05-08

His style is reminiscent of the old crooners like Bing Crosby. The songs don't benefit from his style of delivery. He should be bringing a new style to them.

5 out of 5 stars Julian good old style Jazz.......2007-01-29

I bought this CD after listening to it twice...it grows on you...at first I said What is this......it was different....his diction..
Australion...then come to find out he is of Chinese Heritage..WOW....and he is smart...believe me....The musicians are great...the piano...the bass the drummer are all terrific...and the singing like an old Jazz singer...but done by a young handsome Asian Singer.......you end up singing the words like he does......I now have my friends listening to him...and I have told them they are going to have to buy their own...I am possessive ..this CD is mine...can't wait for the next one..Janice

4 out of 5 stars Slade Rocks The House !!!!.......2006-03-03

I became aware of Slade back in the early 80's when I was in the Service Stationed in England at that time when Quiet Riots version of Cum on Feel The Noize was just hitting the Airwaves ,when I was told that this was a cover of a Slade Song who I was unaware of the time . Soon I became a fan of them right away !!!! Even though the greatest hits albums cover a lot of their material this album is great with songs like My Town,
Find yourself a Rainbow with the awesome sound of the Honky Tonk Piano ,When the lights go down so many great songs on this album!!! The only duplicate songs you will have if you buy the Greatest Hits is My Friend Stan and Everyday !!! A must have album for any Slade Fans!!!!

4 out of 5 stars "My Town" - great Slade B-side.......2006-01-11

"My Town" is a great Slade B-side that's been included on this CD - the original A-side "My Friend Stan" is a charming piano-driven number (if the Kinks were from Wolverhampton they might have sounded like that), but "My Town" is Slade doing what they're known for best - a hard-rocking singalong tune.

5 out of 5 stars do we still do it.......2003-06-30

this album is from an era when even slade b-sides were excellent. 'do we still do it' has to be one of their best songs ever, and it didn't even make a single release! that's how much they were on a roll at this time.

i have all the slade albums, and along with play it loud and slade alive this is a fave.

5 out of 5 stars Do We Still Do It.......2003-02-11

Slade set the standard for big arena rock. Their stage show was awesome. I loved it when the lights were out except for a spot light on the lead singers hat. Its mirrors shot beams through out the arena. Super Yobs space man image predated the Kiss concept. Kiss later copied the Slade formula and stepped it up a notch. I saw Slade in Louisville Ky. many years ago. To this day I still hear the sound check where the roadie kept saying "turn it up" over the lead mike. He finally screamed "turn it up!" I never heard a louder more full lead vocal to this day. My favorite song from this album is "Do We Still Do It." It is the ultimate rock song. It hasnt been surpassed by any band in 30 years. Everyday and other great songs fill out this one of a kind album.

4 out of 5 stars Stomp Your Hands, Clap Your Feet.......2001-05-23

It's hard to believe four guys as homely as Slade made such a beautiful noise, but the band was on some sort of roll in England when this was originally released nearly 30 years ago. The band's music, like that of The Jam and, to a certain degree Oasis, never really seemed to catch on in the States like it did across the pond. Entitled "Stomp Your Hands Clap Your Feet" when released stateside, it's the perfect companion to the hits collection "Sladest." From top to bottom, this has to be their "masterpiece" (if you can use that term to describe a band only concerned with having a good time), and it contains three of their best (and largely unknown) songs in "Do We Still Do It," "When The Lights Are Out," and "How Can It Be." Full of the goodtime, foot stompin' dependable boogie we've come to expect from Noddy Holder and Co. and the last great album they released before once again making a big push to be noticed in the U.S. in the late 1980's. You could find a lot worse ways to spend 30 minutes.
