If you are looking for a good, funny yet touching CD, look no further. This is my favorite Kristina CD and is a great introduction to this fabulous singer! And if you like this, make sure to check out Christine Lavin, another great funny folky gal!

Great music, great stories.......2000-12-29

If music is good, live music is almost always better. That's true of Kristina Olsen's CD "Live From Around the World." Some cover songs, some originals, this CD is excellent all the way through.

One of the best qualities of this CD is the many styles of music. She goes from the funky, bluesy "Walking Blues" to the short, sweet and funny "Love, Kristina." "The Kind of Mood I'm In" and "Better than TV" are hilarious and up-beat. The lyrics and melody of "Dangerous" will haunt you for days. And "Cry You a Waterfall" is beautiful, touching and bittersweet.

Through it all, Kristina does what so many folk-singers do so well: tell stories. This is not just a collection of live music; it's live impromptu tale-telling. It's so much fun to listen to her stories. But watch out -- her funny, lively stories will have you gasping for breath from laughing so hard.

This selection of live recordings from around the world is an excellent representation of this charming and witty artist. Included, as seperately programmed tracks, are many spoken introductions which are an integral part of Kristina's live shows. The varied guitar and piano accompaniment complement good lyrics sung with warmth and conviction. Highly recommended.

I needed some "new" music to listen to, my friend Mick told me about Kristina, I ordered the "Love, Kristina" CD, and have been elated at this "discovery" of a very talented musician! Kristina Olsen just gets better year after year. "Hurry On Home" is very ballad heavy (Hurry on Home, He's Still In Love With You) with the humorous songs (The Man With The Bright Red Car) Kristina is known (and loved) for writing. I have been listening to Kristina for a very long time (over 10 years) and I love all her albums. She is a fabulous songwriter and storyteller with a emotion-driven voice that keeps you wanting more!

One of the CD's Ever Made in the Last Ten Years!.......2000-01-07

Kristina Olsen's first CD is one of my all-time favorites! She has a gift for writing and singing lyrics that touch your soul and reverberate for a long, long time afterwards. Two examples of this is "My Father's Piano" and the incredible "Cry You a Waterfall." Mixed with these wonderfully sensitive ballads are witty songs like "Wish You'd Stop Doing so Well" (great song to play VERY LOUD after a break-up) and "I'll Be Home Tonight." A special note all to itself would be her song "I Can Not Live With Out You" which is perhaps one of the best love songs ever written in the last ten years (and I do not exaggerate!) If you like singer/songwriters like David Wilcox and Nanci Griffith you'll be in particular heaven! Nina Gerber is perfect as usual!

I had never heard of Kristina Olsen, and probably wouldn't have, if the music store I was browsing in one day hadn't been piping it over the p.a.. I stopped in my tracks to listen. All these years later, this remains one of my favorite CD's ... especially while riding in the car. The music takes me to good places in my mind every time. To this day, I still don't know much about Kristina Olsen, but I sure love this CD!

I've followed Kristina Olsen for many years. This, her first Rounder release, contains many of my favorite songs. From the simplicity of "My Father's Piano", to the emotional complexity of "Practicing Walking Away", Kristina's splendid songwriting and vibrant voice just sorta grab you and say, "Listen up! This is important! This is life!"

Album Description

Duet was released in Australia in March '98 and is a duet between American Kristina Olsen (on guitar, steelbody slide guitar, piano, concertina, sax and vocals) and Australian Peter Grayling (on cello, mandocello and harmony vocal). All but three of the tracks were recorded in a studio without over-dubbing, the other three tracks are taken from a live concert in Western Australia.

the combination of kristina's lyrics and music with the depth and warmth of peter's amazing chello makes this album a must have item. Having been familiar with her work for many years and seen them live i can say this album captures the sincerity and depth of feeling that the duo bring to a live performance. A lthough familiar with my fathers piano this version with peter has again brought tears to my eyes. The emotion continues through tracks like Heart hill and the heart renching fact that formed the lyrics to eight short minutes which like time itself is forever getting shorter, this album is however full of lighter moments that reflect on things in life we can all associate ourselves with, like wish you'd stop doing so well. The pair of them are musically a match made in heaven , Kristina's playing and voice are a joy to the ear and must not be missed. so why haven't you put it in your cart yet.

Album Description

All Over Down Under was recorded live during a week of concerts in March 2000 in Australia with Kristina Olsen (guitar, steelbody slide guitar, saxophone, concertina and vocals), Peter Grayling (cello, mandolin) and George Butrumlis (accordion). It contains twelve new songs/intrumentals, nine spoken tracks of humor/stories and three bonus live versions of songs from previous recordings. The unusual combination of instruments and material create an exciting new direction for Kristina's music and writing.

Naked folk exposed.......2005-04-27

To me, good folk music is a performer's document of their time. I love this album because it is so revealing and open about Kristina's experiences.

This album gives the impression that Kristina has been around, done some living, reflected on what she has been through and then written heart felt lyrics about it all.

I'd recommend buying this album just for the song "Portsoaken" alone. Great stuff and what a pity there aren't any samples for you to hear.

Kristina's lyrics are so good because they don't have any self pity in them, only strength and humour. This is not the music of a self pitying navel gazer but that of a strong woman in love with life and all that it brings.

I saw Kristina in concert in Birchgrove in Sydney and I was blown away. It was a free concert and Kristina was on the smaller of two stages and it looked like she was going to be some kind of filler act (I'd never heard of her before). She quickly dispelled my misgivings and went on to give a really great show (unaccompanied). She shone, I feel really grateful to have seen her live.

This recording ranges from passionate to bittersweet to hilarious to exquisite. Regardless of where the ride takes you, it's extremely well sung and performed. The interplay with the other performers and the audience adds to the experience. They all so clearly enjoy being there that one can't help but join in. Highly recommended!

Kristina Olsen can really sing some bluesy original tunes that are bound to become classics!

A great voice belting out joy and wit, she's sitting right next to Billie Holiday's throne in my apotheosis of female singers. Her lyrics sometimes run along the gutsy channels of a Camille Paglia rant, but with the tender heart of everywoman. She sings to her man that she's not interested in being his friend (hubba-hubba), but it's a song that never goes purely raunchy.

From the sultry "Rainy Night in Chinatown" to the wonderfully amusing C&W ballad "Big O," this is a super CD. Grab it and hold onto it!

The Poetry of Soul and Passion.......2000-05-20

I discovered Kristina's 'The Truth of a Woman' at a time when I thought soul and passion in music and life had disappeared. This album presents a rich compilation of lyrics and music that is intensely romantic, down to earth, witty and erotic, not to forget sensuous. A beautifully crafted album that allows one's own experiences to breathe again, and to reach new depths of emotion. I enjoy the originality of the poetry especially in the theme song. Having just discovered this artist I am keen to collect more of her work.

The Truth.......2000-01-21

If there is any better story teller and guitar player in the business I for one would like to know them. Kristina has the talent to draw you into a story and let you experence the emotion of the lyric with the craftmanship of a fine author. I first heard her on the reccomendation of a clerk at a music store who said that I ought to come down to this little room and hear her preform. I have all of the cds she has recorded and often find myself wishing that fate would show the air waves her songs. She is a master guitarist and the lyrics she writes will take you to a place you've never been. Folk music is about sharing stories of our time. Kristina Olsen will share more of her self than anyone else that I've ever heard. It's the Truth of a Woman that I share with my daughters.
