It's hard to imagine a more schizophrenic album than Fireflies, but Faith Hill, the comely pride of Star, Mississippi, had a lot of different factions to please. There's the country set, furious about the L.A. excess of 2002's Cry, as ravaged a pop album as ever made. Then there's the club set, which actually mistook Cry for music, and wanted more. Finally, there's Hill herself, still bruised from the critical drubbing the last album got, and obviously feeling the need to prove herself anew, going brunette to show her transformation. The bad news about Fireflies is that the all-out country songs--the autobiographical "Mississippi Girl," which practically begs forgiveness for Cry, and the cartoonish "Dearly Beloved," a hoedown ditty about a shotgun wedding--are embarrassing attempts to show that the Dixified diva hasn't gotten above her raising. Then, two other offerings--Darrell Scott's preachy protest number "We've Got Nothing But Love to Prove" and the beautiful torch ballad "Paris"--are both lyrical head-scratchers, and find the artist floundering as to who she is and what she's about. Where Hill knowingly flexes her muscle is in tackling three complex, literate songs by alt-folkie Lori McKenna--the title track (about the power of dreams), "Stealing Kisses" (about reevaluating life choices), and "If You Ask" (about living with a substance abuser). Hill gives these performances nuanced readings that say buckets more about her own life than "Mississippi Girl" could ever convey, and point to an emotional reservoir Hill is just beginning to tap. Here's hoping she goes back to that well again and again. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Faith at her best!.......2007-07-12

Fireflies is definitely Faith at her best! An amazing blend of country/rock/acoustic, there's a song for every mood. Faith puts the heartfelt lyrics of songwriter Lori McKenna to life with her immense vocal talents! If you're a major faith fan like myself, this CD is a MUST have!!!

4 out of 5 stars Faith is restored.......2007-07-06

This album is a very healthy 4 stars. Faith came back to teh modern country fold and it clearly suits her better than her ventures on the previously two albums, Breathe and CRy. Good songs:

Sunshine and Summertime - fun song about having fun in summer

Mississippi Girl - rock edge to it, has spark. Faith proclaims she is still a "Regular Jane" from Mississippi at heart.

Dearly Beloved - kind bluegrassy. Funny song about redneck marriage. "See the side effects of sex and alcohol."

Stealing Kisses - slow tune about wife/mother who is neglected in her family life

I Want You - starts with a quick beat. Alternates with a powerful singing of the chorus. Compares her want of lover to forces of nature [e.g., river seeking ocean]

Lucky One - a fun and bouncy tune like Sunshine and Summertime, but a bit more of a mesage. The singer realizes she doesn't have much stuff, but is lucky to have her lover.

Nothing But Love to Proove - spirited. Observations are kind of trite, but a nice tune

Paris - the extra track. About Paris after the liberation in WWII. Kind of a Casablanca theme but with happy results.

5 out of 5 stars Fireflies is a must have.......2007-06-03

Firleflies is a great cd! It really has a variety of songs and Faith does a great job! While some songs are upbeat, like sunshine and summertime, others show a more artistic view, like Stealing Kisses. All of the songs deal with real life issues, times. Mississippi girl was written just for Faith, obviously! She really pored her heart& Soul into this one!!I do think Cry still showed her voice the best, but this one is for the country raido fans too I guess. I would like more gospel songs, or ones written by her though. Overall, the sounds are great and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD from a Great Artist.......2007-03-30

I was never a great country fan until Shania Twain's "the Woman in Me" came out. Then I started listening to more country music. Faith Hill is such a wonderful artist. This is a really fun CD to listen to. My favorites are "Fireflies" which reminds me of my daughter (3 years old) who believes she is a princess (as do I, of course) and "Lucky One" which I discovered from the CD jacket was actually recorded on the day my daughter was born...talk about lucky. I also have "Cry" and "Breathe" and I think each CD shows a different side to Ms. Hill. She is truly a versatile artist.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! It's Faith Doing What She Does Best, Singing.......2007-02-11

I think that everything worth saying about this CD has been said. If you like it, you do, and if you don't, then you don't. I personally don't think that it's fair to try and box a performer in and expect them to keep turning out the same thing over and over again on every CD. Then people would be whining that Faith is just playing it safe and is afraid to take chances. So, it seems that no matter what an artist does, people will always find something to complain about. I once heard an expression that said, "those who can, will do it. Those who can't, will review it."
I do have one question about the song "Sunshine and Summertime." Why does it sound like the very beginning of the track is chopped off? It sounds like the band was already into playing the song when someone hit the record button. The song is really fun! But that intro sounds like something was chopped off. And it's like this on every copy I've heard. Anyone else notice this?
I feel that this is a great CD by faith hill as she learns and grows as an artist. Music is like an audio painting. and even artists who paint go through different periods. Some people will condemn Faith Hill for the 2002 "Cry" CD because it wasn't "more of the same." I commend her for having the courage to step over the line and taking that chance. I'm sure that she could play it safe and keep turning out the same kind of album over and over again. Then people would start whining about how she's in a rut. So, it seems that there really is no right choice. It has to be hard to go through thousands of demos and pick the ones that you think will make a great CD. You have millions of fans out there, and pleasing all of them is impossible! If I could talk to Faith, I'd just tell her to keep following your heart and your instincts. They will never lie to you, or lead you astray.
"Fireflies" is a great CD. And the next CD might be totally different from this one. But keep it in perspective. It's all music, and it's all good.

After immeasurable success in the U.S., Faith Hill finally comes to Europe, and There You'll Be is a sort of catch-up for the best bits we may have missed along the way (or, in other words, a greatest hits collection for the uninitiated). A dozen songs which map the path of the Georgia singer, it includes the massive hit for which she has come to be known over here--"There You'll Be," from the Pearl Harbor soundtrack--together with some pop anthems like "The Way You Love Me (Love to Infinity Mix)." However, the style she delivers most convincingly is that of her roots in country, with "Let Me Let Go", "Piece of My Heart," and "You Give Me Love" from the earlier albums being the clear highlights of this collection. --Gunther Matejka

1 out of 5 stars Not Good Enough.......2007-04-07

I write this knowing how much I love to hear Faith Hill sing , and knowing how much of her Music that I own , and have listened to over the
years , this supposed to be Greatest Hits Ablum that leaves out some of her Hits ,adds these New Songs does away with what the Album is Called , and suppose to be , "The Best OF Faith Hill" , I DON'T THINK SO!

5 out of 5 stars Just the good stuff.......2007-03-09

I am not a huge country western fan, but there are certain artists I really like. I like when an artist comes out with a greatest hits CD that really is filled with greastest hits. If you are a Faith Hill fan, but want to buy just one CD, then buy this one.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2007-03-08

Thought it would be a greatest hits CD of all her original music. Would not have purchased if I had heard CD before I ordered it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2006-11-12

This import CD by Faith Hill is a great compilation of her hits, it also includes never before released songs such as "over the rainbow" which she performs with great diversity. Although a little pricy, well worth the money for true Faith Hill fans.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds Good but It is miss something!.......2006-09-16

This cd sounds good but it is missing some of her best songs! 'It Matters To Me' is my fav and it is not to be found on Faith Hill's Best of! She has some good ones with Tim McGraw also not on this cd! So I would wait!!!!!!!!

The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? You've heard of mind control, haven't you? --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Starry Night A+++.......2007-07-29

I got this for my shower and I absolutely love it!! My son has listened to it every night since he was born, he is now almost 21 months and still it is part of his bedtime routine!!!! It is very different from the traditional lullabyes- we love it and have put it in the can't live without it category.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, calming and still works after 11 years!.......2007-05-09

I bought this for my newborn daughter and she has fallen asleep to this just about every night of her life. In particular, we enjoy the 2 Brazilian songs as I am Portuguese (born there, raised here) and it's immensely enjoyable hearing songs in my native tongue as well as other languages. I have gifted this to several expectant parents and everyone loves it as much as I do. I highly recommend this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful product.......2007-03-08

The songs on this CD are soothing and fantastic. My son loved them!

4 out of 5 stars Good for babies, but a little depressing for adults........2007-02-12

The music is all good, but several of the songs are eerily reminiscent of the Schindler's List soundtrack.

we used this before our first arrived (to acquaint her with the music and hopefully create a positive association for her) and played it every night as part of her bed time routine. i fell asleep to the music as well as i could hear it on the monitor from her room. i can't describe how much i loved listening to the tracks and how good i feel about the success of our nightly routine. we keep the music on the ipod for "sleepy music" while traveling in the car. my now 4 year old daughter with "request" the CD when she is tired! i often give this as a baby shower gift.

From the suggestive series of photos in the CD's packaging to the aerobicized dance-floor workouts within, Faith Hill refuses to concede an inch of crossover dominance to Shania Twain. Except for a seductive duet with husband Tim McGraw on "Let's Make Love" and an occasional pinch of fiddle or steel guitar, there's little here to characterize Hill as a country artist. As pop, the results range from pretty ("Breathe," "Love Is a Sweet Thing") to pretty slight ("I Got My Baby," "If My Heart Had Wings") to borderline inane ("Bringing Out the Elvis," the voyeuristic twist of "The Way You Love Me"). Though Hill's version of Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind" is admirably understated, too much of the album substitutes surface dazzle for emotional depth. --Don McLeese

I got to say that I've always loved Faith so much (and still do!) but although I like the most of the the songs she chose for BREATHE, I think she should've remained closer to her previous albums. Well, I like BREATHE, but I don't like the fact the she turned her back to country music!

3 out of 5 stars Great Cover Photo, if Only the Songs were as Good.......2007-07-06

Faith slipped on this album from previous albums. This definitely has a stronger pop/lite rock flavor than previous work, with even some jazz hints. Not that it's bad to try a different genre. The actual songs themselves, however, try to much to be sweet and treacly. They are not substantial or inventive either. Here are the only real standouts:

Way You Love Me - spirited country/pop [like I said, genre is not the problem] tune. Best song on this album.

If My Heart Had Wings - spirit and force

There Will Come a Day - actually inspirational and spiritual

The album doesn't suck, but there's no real enthusiasm about popping it into the player.

    3 out of 5 stars Sounds Good.......2006-07-07

I Don't have this cd by faith (i have cry which is a great one) but it sounds good except for two one i can't remember and brining out the elvis not that they are bad songs (i believe that there is no such thing as bad music) i just don't like them. i like faith's pop and country sides. but anyway it sounds good

    1 out of 5 stars Shocked.......2006-06-14

I purchased the CD. I own other CD's by Faith Hill. The best way to evaluate satisfaction is to ask the question: "If you had another chance to order the CD being evaluated, would you order the CD. My reply is no. The voice and the background music do not sound like the Faith Hill that I hear in the CD's that I own.

5 out of 5 stars amazing record, still her best.......2006-05-19

I didn't know anything bout Faith before i picked this CD, and that's where my love to modern-country music started its life. I was really impressed at how great this album sounded and still does. The first track "What's in in for me" immediately cristalyzes the paradigm of still-not too much country, not pop either. The following song are just as good as the first one, and of course "Breathe" is a stand-out track, which sounds amazing no matter how many tome you're listening to it. And the perfection if the song also lies in the other mixes, which are not less good than the original. However, the inclusion of silly "Bringing out the Elvis" sounds like a mistake on here, but a small one, which doesn't spoil the general listenability of the record. That said, it's still her best album, which stays in the same league with "Come on Over" and and maybe even better.

It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.

Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.

As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24

I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.

    5 out of 5 stars Stellar album.......2006-11-10

This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.

    5 out of 5 stars **Superb**.......2006-07-19

I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

Faith Hill finally owns up to what we knew all along. She may be from deep-dish Mississippi, but she isn't a country singer, and never has been. This babe's a diva now. And, as she says in her best Diana Ross voice on "Free," "There ain't nothin' I can do about it." But what she could exercise some control over, as the coproducer of her fifth studio album, is the quality and style of her particular brand of über-pop, which on Cry considerably ratchets up the noise factor from 1999's Breathe. The songs, many written by tunesmiths long working in Nashville, often come stocked with meaningful messages, i.e. the emptiness of addiction ("If You're Gonna Fly") or the momentary connection with a loved one who has passed on ("You're Still Here"). Yet Hill and company (longtime producers Byron Gallimore and Dann Huff, in conjunction with Marti Frederiksen) obviously think the best way to make an R&B/pop record is to build a huge, airless production around screeching guitars, wall-rattling drums, and Big Mama choirs. The singer herself may be, indeed, turning out her best vocals ever. But the album itself is a self-conscious mess--a big, wallowing cacophony of sound that leaves the listener numb. In the end, it's a miserable failure. This chanteuse's R&B just ain't got no soul. --Alanna Nash

    3 out of 5 stars Don't Cry, it's just Pop.......2007-07-06

First off, this is not a country album. So listeners should not judge it on that basis. An artist does not have to stick to one genre forever. Analyze the album on its own merits. That said, this album is just so-so. Faith's voice is well showcased, but the music just isn't that interesting. The first half has some respectable stuff, but the second half is a lot of mushy ballad stuff that kind of sound like each other. There is an overall feeling that this could have been a submission for American Idol. Indeed, some of the stuff here is reminiscent of pieces on Katherine McPhee's album. This album just didn't really land for Faith. Too bad. It'll work for you if you just like a good female voice singing "safe" music.

    1 out of 5 stars Just a response.......2007-02-25

I very rarely write reviews, but I looked over a few on here and realized I had to chime in. I believe Faith Hill is one of the most brilliant country artists to come down the bin. Take Me As I Am, It Matters To Me, and Faith were masterpieces of interpretation, vocal prowess, fully developed albums. Faith Hill as an artist however began to go astray on Breathe. Breathe was an album of phenomonal moments spread out over mediocrity. With Cry, Faith Hill's search for new audience completely led her astray. "Cry" and "When The Lights Go Down" are the only even vaguely listenable tracks. The rest of the album is a mish-mash of pop-wanna-be songs that don't even begin to live up to the potential of the artists. Sometimes fans become blinded by loyalty to an artists, and I don't believe it is fair to people to buy an album based on those opinions.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good exercise music.......2006-08-18

I bought this album together with "Breathe" on the recommendation of my wife because I have been listening to the Dixie Chicks daily while I work out. I had never heard Faith Hill's music before but the suggestion was that if I like the Chicks' music I would like Faith Hill.

Of the two albums, I much prefer this one. The opening number "Free" sounds like a Madonna tune (in fact, specifically I think it is really the same song as "La Isla Bonita" although I prefer this rendition). This CD is not as good as any of the Chicks' releases in the past 6 years but it's still worth buying if you are looking for some variety at the gym.

3 out of 5 stars Good album, too pop sounding sometimes .......2006-06-28

While I commend Faith Hill for doing Cry in 2002, and it is good, the album's a little too pop-heavy at times, not as much Nashville country as one might expect. I like the title song, Free, One (and its hip-hop driven bass lines on it), You're Still Here and some others. But the second half sounds like too many 1987-sounding heavy metal songs and power ballads mixed up in a blender before track 14. Bon Jovi and Whitesnake could have sang with Faith on those songs the way they sound. It does have a loudness that could match perfectly with the summer tour she's doing now (2006) with Tim McGraw. It's not as groundbreaking as Faith or the hits-heavy Breathe. But I doubt if anyone is playing this CD in their car now on the streets of Nashville. They might eject the CD and later toss it off in the street, because it's way too slick at times.

That Faith Hill would increase the pop elements of her music doesn't come as a surprise. After all, she's a youthful, vivacious woman plenty capable of gaining the mass appeal mined by fellow female country artists Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes, and Deana Carter. What is surprising about Hill's fourth album is how she brings new depth to her songs as well as a fresher, more pop-based sound. Instead of trying to out-sing Rimes or out-dance Twain, she works with producers Dann Huff and Byron Gallimore to create a distinctive country-pop style that is as mature as it is entertaining. As her massive crossover hit "This Kiss" proves, Hill and her collaborators know how to make the most of her limited voice and exuberant personality. The album has plenty of songs that use her talents, including the initial smash hit. --Michael McCall

4 out of 5 stars Third Time not quite as charming.......2007-07-05

This album isn't quite as good as Faith's first two. The lyrics to songs are more commonplace at times. The album as a whole is shading toward pop or easy listening. There are more filler songs on this album, a longer album than the first 2. Here are notable songs:

This Kiss - very well sung love tune

    You Give Me Love

    Love Ain't Like That

Wild Frontier - slow. singer is exploring life with her lover

Secret of Life - good remake of the Gretchen Peters song

Hard Way - an excellent energetic song

    4 out of 5 stars What a fun album!.......2007-06-11

Man, what a fun album. This one had so many hits, thus staying in the cd player for a long time. At the time this album came out, I had just finished highschool, and my older sister and I were taking road trips to my parents lakehouse, and needless to say this cd got a lot of play.
Such fun songs like "This Kiss", "The Secret of life (shows her sultry voice), and "Just to hear you say that you love me".
    Faith has a dynamic voice!

5 out of 5 stars Faith at Her Best!.......2006-06-16

I have only recently become a country music fan. I wasn't sure I would like Faith Hill, but this was the first CD of hers I purchased. From the very first song "This Kiss," I was instantly drawn into her music. What I love about her songs is that they are so real. "You Give Me Love" is so real and so strong. It's nice to hear a song that a woman sings about a man who is crying for a change. "The Secret of Life" has taken some getting used to. It is not my absolute favorite on the CD. "Me" is the song that means the most to me since I have experienced trying to change for someone else in a relationship. And "I Love You" is a heart-jerker for those who have loved someone from afar. She has a big voice, and she nails each song on this CD. Give it a try!

    5 out of 5 stars I Love This Album!!!.......2006-02-04

Faith Hill's third self-titled disc is an amazing CD. Her voice sounds superb on all of them, and each one has great meaning. I highly recommend this disc for everyone, whether you like country or not because it is great for all people. Here is a breakdown of the songs:

    01. "This Kiss" ~ I love this song! This was one of the first songs that I ever heard of her's, and it is so amazing. The woman in the song is so in love, and the kiss and chemistry between her and her guy are so great. "It's the way you love me; It's a feeling like this; It's centrifugal motion; It's perpetual bliss; It's that pivotal moment; It's impossible; This kiss, this kiss (unstoppable); This kiss, this kiss". This is a great love song.

    02. "You Give Me Love" ~ I love this song! It is a very sweet, slow, romantic song that is perfect for many people. It talks about how this girl is loved so much by her guy even when other things may be and are going wrong or it doesn't seem so. "You turn around, then you ask me behind tears of doubt; Just what do I see in you; Please don't cry; I know sometimes it seems we barely get by; But you don't see how much you do to get me through; When the world is cold, and I need a friend to hold; You give me love, you give me love; And when my hope is gone, and I feel I can't go on; You pick me up; You give me love, you give me love".

    03. "Let Me Let Go" ~ This is one of the most beautiful slow songs ever of her's! A relationship is over, but he still has control over her and is part of her because she can't forget him, so she is pleading to forget him. "I thought it was over, baby; We said our goodbyes; But I can't go a day without your face goin' through my mind; In fact, not a single minute passes without you in it; Your voice, your touch, memories of your love; Are with me all of the time; Let me let go, baby; Let me let go; If this is for the best, why are you still in my heart; Are you still in my soul; Let me let go".

    04. "Love Ain't Like That" ~ This is a beautiful love song talking about how love takes time and hard work. "You can't buy it at the store, try it on for size, then take it back if it don't feel right; No love, love ain't like that...It don't fall from the sky like a tiny drop of rain; That hits you right between the eyes one day; No love, love ain't like that; You can't put your money down; An' just roll the dice; Think you're gonna win it all some night; No love, love ain't like that; Love ain't that easy to define; You can't build it by design; It takes its own sweet time". A very beautiful song with a great message.

    05. "Better Days" ~ This is a very beautiful and inspirational song. The message is very positive, and it's about how you shouldn't get so discouraged because even though you are have difficulties in the present, your future will have better and great days. "Hard times are fallin' on you; Even when you smile, I see the hurt come through; And I know it feels like it's never gonna end; You say nothin's been right for a long time; And every step you take is an uphill clim; I see you're reachin' out, so let me tell you friend; Better days are comin' around; I know you feel like the whole world's gona and let you down; Better day they're comin' for you; I know they will 'cause I'll be right here makin' sure they do; And if your sky ain't lookin' the fairest, there ain't no reason to be embarrassed; Ain't nobody in the world ain't felt the rain from time to time; And just when you think it's all over and done; The nights get easier one by one; So take my hand and hold on tight, and soon you're gonna find...". I love this song and its message.

    06. "My Wild Frontier" ~ This is an okay song, but it's also by far the worst song on the disc. A woman feels so alone and has to get through things, but she and her guy are together and are for each other. "How do I feel? Well, I feel so alone; Like a sad armadillo across this desert I roam; I've been stripped down, bare, til I break; Still the wheel keeps turning...And there were highways to get across; And places far from here; And I was his lonesome prairie; And he was my wild frontier".

    07. "The Secret Of Life" ~ This is a good song talking about how even though people think there is, there really isn't a secret to life and happiness. "The secret of life is gettin' up early; The secret of life is stayin' up late; The secret of life is try not to hurry; But don't wait, don't wait; The secret of life is a good cup of coffee; The secret of life is keep your eye on the ball; The secret of life is to find the right woman; The secret of life is nothin' at all; Oh, it nothin' at all".

    08. "Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me" ~ One of my favorite Faith Hill songs ever, as well as one of my favorite duets! This song is pure beauty and a great love/wedding song. It's about how you'd do anything for the person you love just to hear that they love you too. "If I could win your heart; If you'd let me in your heart; I'd be so happy, baby; Just for these arms to be; Holding you close to me; There's nothing in this world I won't try; No limit to what I'd do to make you mine, 'cause; I'd climb right up to the sky; I'd take down the stars; Just to be in your arms, baby; I'd go and capture the moon; That's what I would do; Just to hear you say that you love me; Just to hear you say that you love me".

    09. "Me" ~ I love this song so much! It has a very positive message about self-acceptance and accepting others how they are. "Me, that's all I have to give; What you get is what you see, yeah; No second guessing, no pretending; With you, all I ever have to be is me; I can laugh or cry, don't have to hide; The way I feel; Rain or shine, by my side, proving we've got; A love that's real; An old pair of jeans or an evening gown; You still see the same girl that you found".

    10. "I Love You" ~ Another beautiful love song about how this girl loves this guy so much, and she wants him to love her also. I highly relate to this song, and I think a lot of other people could too. "I must be crazy now; Maybe I dream too much; But whn I think of you, I long to feel your touch; To whisper in your ear; Words that are old as time; Words only you would hear; If only you were mine; I wish I could go back; To the very first day I saw you; Should've made my move when you looked in my eyes; Cause by now I know that; You'd feel the way that I do; And you'd whisper these words; As you lie here by my side; I love you, please say you love me too; These three words, they could change our lives forever; And I promise you that we will always be together; Till the end of time".

    11. "The Hard Way" ~ This is a good song about how this woman really loves this man even though he isn't good to or for her, and that makes her life hard. "I hear every word they say; They tell me to stay away; They say I'm better off without you, baby; You've caused me nothing but pain; Heartache's your middle name; But seems I never see it coming; I'll just admit it baby; You really drive me crazy; Let go of my heart; Cause every time you're near me; I can't think clearly; Defenses fall apart; I keep livin' and lovin' and learnin' the hard way; You're the hardest lesson, baby, of my life; I keep livin' and lovin' and learnin' the hard way; Someday, baby, I will get it right".

    12. "Somebody Stand By Me" ~ This is another beautiful and highly-relatable song about how this person feels so alone but wants somebody to stand by them and support them one day. "I've been this alone for so long; I'm beginning to wonder why; I stand in one place; Different name, different face; But no one's gonna see me break down and cry; Won't somebody stand by me; Stand by me just one time; Won't somebody stand by me; Stand by me just one time". This is a beautiful song about needing support, especially when all alone.

Overall, this is an terrific collection of beautiful inspirational and love songs matched with an exquisite voice. I highly recommend this disc for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or preferred type of music. I believe everyone would enjoy this music, and the songs are all highly relatable and easy to get into.

4 out of 5 stars Better CD than I thought!.......2005-08-11

I'm not a country fan at all and I only of country music because of Shania Twain. However, I heard "Let Me Let Go" on some show and it stayed with me so long that I had to dig it up who sung it. Then, I went to the local library to find this album. I play it on random and "Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me" comes on first and from that moment on, I don't think I listened to any other song for weeks except for that song. Best Faith Hill song ever, better than "Breathe" better than "Cry". I bought this CD because of that song.

This second album in Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade" (Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on each song's original album.

A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern slack key. Instruments on this album include everything from traditional mouth bow, 'ukulele, and percussion stones to 12-string slack key and modern acoustic guitars. Elder statesman Ray Kane lullabies us with his simple instrumental "Popoki Slack Key" (popoki means "little cat"); renowned improviser Cyril Pahinui and Sol Hoopii-influenced Bob Brozman combine 12-string slack key and acoustic steel guitar interpreting "Hilo E" and "Lili'u E" in a style evocative of the 1920s. Showing off how slack key works solo, in duets, or with mixed accompaniment, this is one of the most beautiful slack key compilations out there. --Erik Macki

This cd would be worth buying even if it only had one song on it - the version of "Pu'u Anahulu" with Martin Pahinui on vocals. I get chicken skin just listening to this song and how much he sounds like his father! Of course I love Gabby's version but always wondered what it would sound like without the cheesy strings; this is it. Unlike one other reviewer, I love the vocals.

This album won a Grammy in February 2006! And diservedly so...

Slack key has come into it's own, many prominent guitar players are following these talented Hawaiians around, learning their new tricks and their old traditional ways. (In song sample #8 of "Masters II", Amazon spelled Cyril Pahinui's name with a "g", come on, let's give the Hawaiian artists the respect they deserve.)

This is NOT a sequel to Slack Key MastersI, but a beautiful extension and addition. The voices as well as the strings are sublime, just right in fact.

All I can say is, MORE! MORE! MORE!

2 out of 5 stars Please, more slack key without vocals!!!.......2005-11-22

That's my call to record execs, or George Winston, or whoever, if they ever read these. I bought volume one, absolutely thrilled that finally, after 40 years of searching, I'd finally found slack key without singing. I don't hate the vocals, and the vocals on this CD are less annoying than a whole lot of the vocals I've heard in Hawaiian music (yes, I grew up there, and have gone back every year for the last 30 years, and I've heard a whole lot of Hawaiian music that I didn't exactly ask for.) I love finger-picked ukulele (NOT strummed), and I love the cheesy steel guitar, but if I never hear another vocal, it'll be too soon. So anyway: is everyone who ever published Hawaiian music confident that people like and expect vocals? I see other reviews here that could do without the vocals. I hereby swear that if Dancing Cat (or anybody) ever does another collection anywhere near as good as Vol. 1, without vocals, I will instantly buy it at a premium price. I promise!

I can see planets moving in the cosmos when I listen to James McMurtry. This is an album full of great tracks. I've got other recordings of some of them, and I wouldn't prioritize any over others, because James McMurtry is so emotive that ...any particular day, even if you get a different sound, it's a good one. But for a good set of recordings on a single CD you can leave in the player or take on a trip, this is nice. I am enjoying it time and time again, and will most likely listen more to this album than my older ones, unless I'm on a huge James kick, and want to hear more of a range.
