About the Artist
Although born in South Carolina, Eric Himan, singer-songwriter, has a hard time explaining where he is from. "My father was in the Air Force so we moved all around from New York and New Jersey to Hawaii and Florida." For his 8th birthday, Eric was given an electric guitar, though he was drawn instead to the sound of his sister's acoustic and began lessons under the teachings of his father, a New York City jazz musician of 30 years. Eric found influence in musical artists ranging from jazz greats Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday, rock and roll legends the Beatles and Janis Joplin, and most of all folk impresarios, Ani DiFranco, Tracy Chapman, and Cat Stevens. He began writing songs when he was only 12, playing in talent shows and at neighborhood recitals. Within these early years, he discovered that he had a unique and rather powerful voice that echoed down the halls of his Fort Walton Beach, Fl home.
In his first year of college at the Pennsylvania State University, Eric recorded his debut EP INVINCIBLE and received much attention for his strong voice, lyrics and unique guitar work especially for the yearning love song, "Cold" (you leave me cold....). He later sought out a band in need of a new singer by sneaking into a local bar and auditioning for them. Once they heard his voice, they called him at 4 am with their offer. The band, Dunston Ashe, recorded Permanent Record, selling over 1000 cds and opening for bands such as Fuel, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, and Pittsburgh's The Gathering Field. After three years the group disbanded to pursue different goals, with Eric more resolved to become an independent musician. In the next six months, he wrote and recorded his full length self-titled cd, featuring a total of 11 songs. Eric writes about many diverse topics including love's first impression (Drop the Coin), the trials of living in today's ever-changing society (Could This Be?), and the pain of growing up without the nurturing of his mother (One Less Person). Since its release in January 2001, Eric Himan has sold out of its first printing!
Eric's highly anticipated second cd, I Go On released in September 2002, features 12 tracks and explores several genres of musical styles from folk, pop, blues, jazz and even a little country! I Go On showcases Eric's love of music and all of his influences. I Go On provides the listener with something new to look forward to with every song. Great hooks, masterfully - penned lyrics, and quality delivery make this cd a "must have" for music lovers. Eric is joined with a band on three of the songs and accompanied by piano on one track.
Eric has been touring relentlessly since his college graduation. He has been fortunate to share the stage with artist Edwin McCain and Melissa Ferrick. Through his touring he has built a loyal and impressive fan base. The consistency of his shows paired with the poise and professionalism Eric displays on stage has allowed him to explore all venues of touring, from College Orientations, to Coffee Houses, and larger Club Venues. Eric has played all types of "rooms".
Press reviews note that Eric has a commanding stage presence, both melodic and intense which make his live performances impactful and impressive. His tattoo- filled arms cradle his guitar making it sing with quick percussive strokes. Singer-songwriter Eric Himan takes his audiences through an emotional and rewarding journey. As he looks for ways to creatively express himself through sound, Eric Himan's passion for writing and performing continue to grow stronger with each passing day.

Not Just Another Pretty Face.......2005-12-02
Recently, I read a small spot in a magazine about Eric Himan. My first reaction was to dismiss him as another one of today's "all about appearance, no substance" artists. Then my "inner voice" said, "give the guy a chance". Always listen to your inner voice. Eric Himan is one of a new generation of singer-songwriters who have broke free of the corporate chains that bind much of today's popular music in a prison of mediocrity. He is far more substance then appearance.
To call him a new artist would be wrong. "Dark Horse" is his forth release, but is the first of his albums that has a real studio feel to it. It is also his first release to include a cover song, a beautiful rendition of Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years". The rest of Dark Horse is all original material, and what prodigious material it is.
While his earlier albums are excellent, they are stripped down productions that rely on Eric's soulful voice and vibrant guitar playing for the backbone of their sound. The production on Dark Horse is rich and lush without being over produced. There are also a greater variety of styles on this album.
The country twang of "White Horse" is great. Every time I hear this song, I picture it being played in a conservative western bar with the progressive play on sexuality in the lyrics going right over the heads of the oblivious toe tapping patrons. "Brown Fog" is a tender, heart-rending, soul-searching ballad that has the jazzy feel of a late night barroom. You can almost see the smoke in the air. Needles to say, "until the music stops, I will listen".
Edgy rocker sound with a whole lotta soul.......2005-11-21
My first impulse is to compare Eric Himan to Gavin DeGraw but that would be because I heard the latter first. Of course, this talented singer/songwriter/musician has quite a few pegs of raw talent over the young and equally handsome DeGraw. Himan has a voice that is a whole lot grittier and as he wraps his vocals around his lyrics, the listener is drawn in with hardly any resistance. His unconventional sound only makes every song he sings more fresh and more appealing. Even with Dark Horse, a more blatant attempt at mainstream than any of his previous efforts, his sound remains distinct and refreshing. Even though he is an openly gay artist, don't expect to hear blatant songs about man on man action... most of the songs could be about anyone which should add to his overall appeal. He does touch up on gay issues but ever so slightly on this album... not as obvious as he did with "My Decision", his blazing retort to Date Rape.
Opening with "Habit/Curse" is a great way to begin a journey of musical landscapes enlivened by rich and engrossing lyrics. The song is about realising that sometimes what you want and need are not the best things for you. "Have Me" is undeniably upbeat and catchy, drawing you in from the first instant to the last chord. It even features that rare instrumental break (most of the songs here do, actually). "Clyde" is a haunting piano driven tune with Himan trying a honeysuckle approach to singing which adds to the charm. "White Horse" is catchy and fun... an upbeat jem that has a folky sound to it. "Holding Back the Years" is cover that is stunningly well delivered and a perfect choice to go with Himan's stunning voice. When he sings those words, it is hard to not feel where he is comming from. "Aimlessness" is one of my favorite tracks on the album despite it being a bit short. It has a midtempo rock appeal to it and the lyrics are true. (If you don't know what you're looking for/how you ever gonna find it?) "Stranded" is a slow, R&B tinged song that talks about moving on and growing... it is a saddened song of hope. "Listen" is another piano driven ballad that is quite pretty and his smokey voice highlights this beauty. "Throw Away the Past" is close to being a modern pop rocker but it is one that outshines the competition with its true to life and personal lyrics. "In the Brown Fog" is a near accapella number backed with subtle guitar chords and it is a stripped down song of beauty complete with his deeper than others lyrics. And something to rejoice about... there is a hidden bonus track that is unnamed but hardly unmentionable. It is the rockiest song on the album and it could have easily served as the opening number as it is equally engaging as "Habit/Curse", yet it serves a deliciously crafted purpose as the ending... it leaves the listener wanting more.
Eric Himan may not be a popular musician enriched with the frothy sounds or Good Charlotte, britney Spears, or Gavin DeGraw, but he deserves to be a big time artist. His skill transends the genre of "independent" and it would be a blessing to the ever-stale state of the mainstream music world. This album is worth the price... and it is worth the time invested to listen. Go for it... give Eric Himan a try.
A "must have" for any CD collection.......2005-08-18
I like every kind of music, from pop to classical to rock to blues... and yes, even country. I can appreciate a good song, regardless of the genre. This CD, though, slides across genres, refusing to fall into a single style. The one constant is Eric's passion. It's in the lyrics, the music, and the voice. This guy is more than a singer. He is an incredible entertainer. (I have seen him twice, and will definitely see him again.)
Specifically on this CD, his songwriting is witty, clever, and personal. The opening track describes the one-up, one-down of a relationship, saying "if I'm your habit, you're my curse." And the plea to be seen as he is now, for good or bad, is eloquently played out in "Throw away the past."
Buy this CD. And don't let it out of your sight. Friends will borrow it, and you will never see it again!
GrownUpMusic.com recommended!.......2005-06-27
With a voice like Cat Stevens, inked arms a la Tommy Lee and a guitar style akin to fellow indie artist Ani DeFranco, Eric Himan is an angry young man on a mission. Perhaps "angry" is a bit strong, since he only strums like an angry young man in stark contrast to his deeply personal and vulnerable lyrics. But if you're looking for an original voice in the latest crop of 20something schlocksters, Himan is your man. He rocks. He rockabillies. But perhaps the most poignant moment on Himan's new record is his only cover: the Simply Red soul ballad "Holding Back the Years," which - in his skillful hands and simple production - breathes new life into the hauntingly beautiful classic. Himan is like the stray junk yard dog you want to adopt. He's scrappy on the outside, gentle on the inside, and ultimately irresistable.
One of my favorite singers right now.......2005-06-18
I read an article about Eric and he seemed very interesting. He had a good attitude and seemed very intelligent. I looked him up on i-tunes and ended up buying his stuff. When I heard Dark Horse was coming out I was pretty happy. I live in Los Angeles and looked everywhere for his CD. Just buy it from Amazon. I never found it in the stores. Was it worth it? Yes. Eric has a really unique voice and I mean that literally. It is just different. His songs are so true to people emotions. I love finding new artists and spreading them around to people. You can only listen to Britney so many times without needing to find some quality. His music is kind of dark in places and the genres run from blues to rock. Great stuff. I can't wait to see him in concert.

Refreshing to hear... .......2006-11-15
What happens when a musician evolves from being good? Well, in Eric Himan's case, he becomes exceptionally great. As his previous studio album seemed to wander towards a more contemorary radio-friendly format, Everywhere All At Once bucks that trend. I loved Dark Horse but I have to say it is not as accomplished and refreshing to listen to as this album. Maybe the fact that Mr. Himan seems happier through out this set has something to do with it but I'm more inclined to pin point the coolness of this album on the fact that he does not conform to everything else you hear on the radio. Even when he seemed to venture that way, with Dark Horse, he still maintained a signature sound that in my opinion elevates him above those simply putting out hit after hit. That unique sound is here in full force and it is undeniable that this album is something from the heart and geared for those who enjoy "real" music. On top of that, his style through out is mildly ecclectic. Each song features that rocking sound he is wonderfully gifted at, but he also injects other genre's into the mix. For example, "I Don't Wait Well" features an intriguing punk sound to it which goes surprisingly well with Eric Himans vocals. "Thanks" has hint of bluesy attitude to it (and the lyrics also have a spunkiness to them that many people could relate to). "Love Don't Hide" offers a little gospel flavor as a back round chorus belts out, complementing an already perfect song effectively. I particularly enjoy "The Difference" because of its upbeat message, and "Worry About Nothing" which begins similarly to "Habit/Curse" but ventures into its own lyrical terretory. Fans of his wittiness, look out for "Heart Clean" which is reminisent of some of his older material in both substance and style (and that is great).
Every song on this release is worth listening to and each one is relatable in some way, shape, or form. I can honestly say that "The Difference" is a song (and one of the few, I might add) that actually instills a little hope in me that things will get better. I must admit that I am both shocked and ashamed (of our lackluster music industry, no less) that Eric Himan is not a bigger contender for radio airplay because, face it... he would bring something new and fresh to the airwaves. Get this album. You will not be disapointed.
Every-Time, Simultaneously.......2006-09-25
Eric Himan is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation. He is gifted with the rare combination of a great voice, excellent musicianship, and (most importantly) something to say. Everywhere All At Once is his 5th studio release, and it heralds another big artistic step forward. The production on the album is first rate and the music is rich in textures and harmonies, with a little help from Andy Moore and Levi Kris. It reminds me a little of The Beatles "White Album" in that contains 15 songs and explores a variety of musical styles. ~ everything from toe-tapping country twang to punk-rock and soft jazz. There is also plenty of the introspective acoustic music that hallmarks Eric's earlier albums. It is literally Everywhere All At Once. That is a good thing. There are a lot of firsts on Everywhere; his first dance song "Something to Dance To" which has the feel of a top 10 hit, his first gay anthem "Love Don't Hide", and his first ode to villainy "Acquired Taste". "Acquired Taste" is probably my favorite song as of this writing, but then I always had a thing for the bad guys. Having something to say is the most important ingredient of any type of art. Eric's message is important, especially for the gay community and especially in this day and age. The message is that long -term love is superior to "One Night Stands". That might seem self-evident to some, but it is downright revolutionary in the gay community where we are routinely ridiculed for promiscuity while we are simultaneously denied the right to Marriage and the long-term stability that institution provides. Eric sticks his finger in the eye of that hypocrisy, without loosing his "mojo". Another cut on the album titled "Heart Clean" is so charged with sexual energy that it makes Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" seem like a wet noodle. In Eric's world view, sex is an expression of love. I sensed that same truth as a young man growing up gay, but that realization left me feeling the odd man out. Gay culture is focused more on hedonism then heroism. Thanks in part to Eric and the changing attitude he expresses so well, I don't feel so alone anymore. Wether you are looking for some new tunes, or a new philosophy of life, Everywhere All At Once delivers.

It doesn't get any better then this, or more real........2005-11-29
It doesn't get any better then this, or more real. Eric Himan is a breath of fresh air. I believe this is his third album but there is no "freshman slump" here, just honest songs that radiate warmth and compassion. Eric writes with a power and wisdom that seem far beyond his "twenty something" age. "One Night Stands" is in your face commentary on promiscuity and all its heartbreak. "My Decision" is a first person account of date rape that is so chilling that I hope it is "just a song" and not the recollection of a real experience. "The Outskirts of You", "Everytime", and "On The Drive" are compelling and sublime songs that speak to a multitude of human emotions. As for "Luxury's Definition", well that is listening to Eric sing. I don't know if the world is ready for his kind of brutal honesty, but I know I am.
All for show is not showy at all.......2004-07-12

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!.......2004-06-02
Had the opportunity to see Eric in a small acoustic setting. Not only is he charming and sexy, that voice is amazing as it flows from this small guy. The cd flows nicely as it crosses genres. The highlight on the cd for me is "Everytime". This could be HUGE on radio....it's so beautiful. This is a FANTASTIC cd that has a number of excellent songs. I highly recommend this CD. You WON'T be disappointed.
LIQUID LOVE & SORROW.......2004-01-28
simply raw emotion set to soulful music... you can drop this CD when you need a lift, when you want to share some heartache, or just when you want to be crooned to by a beautiful young man. this is a must-have in any collection.

Album Description
Dynamic vocal range paired with skilled percussive playing are delivered in this sophomore release which has been described as "Tracy Chapman meets Dave Matthews with and Ani DiFranco twist."
I Go On... opens with Delicately Made, an acoustic song about the struggles of life exploration in these hard economic times.
I Ain't Done with You, the blues inspired second track highlights Eric in a new arena as he grooves and belts out the notes in a style reminiscent of blues "diva's".
Go On offers a theory rarely spoken of today, that "you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince!"
The next three tracks showcase Eric's influences and diversity: Change Your Tune, is rockabilly monochromatic slide scale song. Man You Had In Mind, is an up- tempo bluegrass tune, and Alone, a jazz inspired "quiet" song.
Save Me the Trouble, is a waltzy acoustic song with a beautiful bridge and offers a message of friendship and hope through difficult times. Eric also ventures into political territory with, Us Little People, which explores the differences in modern US society with that of the "sugar-coated" 50's era.
Eric is known for his great song writing, but he centers best in the ballad arena with tracks such as No Urgency, a piano driven song about lost love. The next song Cold is a remake of song Eric recorded early on in his career. It is his most requested song on tour! It was updated and added to this release as a bonus for his long time fans.
I Will Wait is a fast driven, fly by the seat of your pants song that captures the heartache and desperation of desiring the attention of another.
I Go On... wraps up with the first "officially released single" Wish. This pop- oriented songs culminates a taste of all of the styles and influences which inspire Eric as a song writer! This song is sure to get you up and moving! One listen through, and you will be convinced that this sophomore offering from Eric Himan will be the cd that allows Eric to enter into mainstream music today!
Eric's delivery on the cd is flawless. I Go On... showcases Eric's genius in penning lyrics that speak to the mind and heart simultaneously, the percussive acoustic style of guitar playing that has become his trademark, and the diversity of his musical endeavors. This cd is a must have for lovers of truly original music!

A Diamond in the Rough.......2006-08-24
If over-produced pop is your thing, music where the artist has almost nothing to do with the sound ~ don't buy this record (I'm sure Justine Timberlake will have a new album out soon). If like me however, you like your music up close and personal, then this is an album for you. This is the kind of personal music that people remorse over the "fact" that it is not being made anymore. Yet here it is, sung by a guy who is all heart and wasn't even born when James Taylor and Carol King ruled the pop charts.
This is album #2 for Eric and it showcases strong song-writing skills, a powerful voice, and excellent guitar work. "Delicately Made" opens up the show and sets the tone with intimate lyrics and soulful delivery. "I Aint Done With You" grinds it up with a sultry sexy number that could have been sung by Billie Holiday (substitute jazz piano for the guitar).
"Man You Had in Mind" is a "coming out" anthem for gay kids explaining their lives to their parents, but the lyrics are general enough for anyone who has ever had to take a stand against what mom or dad wanted for them. "No Urgency" is as beautiful a song of unrequited love as has ever been written.
This is the type of music that stands up to repeated listening. The words "Dylanesque" and "Beatleesque" come to mind. But Eric Himan is still a small venue performer... as were once The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Listen to this guy and see him while you can still get decent seats to his shows ~ you will be ahead of the curve!
Big disappointment.......2006-01-05
I bought this and 2 other of Eric Himan CD's (All FOr Show & One Night Stands... Eric Himan Live) after reading other customer reviews and listening to a few 30 second clips...BIG MISTAKE. These are just 3 more CD's that will collect dust that I bought on reading the advise of others.
I had expected something more polished than a coffee house folk singer. I could not relate to most of his songs after attempting to connect with them after a second and third listen. Some of the songs were just plain difficult to understand with Himan's style of singing. This will appeal to you if you are into coffe shop performers and are not really listening to the words but unfortunately not me.
If you are looking for out performers that are more polished, easier to understand and can relate to better because of his words check out Levi Kreis at his website levikreis.com or cdbaby.com, his music was not available at Amazon at least check.
A++.......2004-01-11
I heard abou Eric when we came to Seattle for a tour at the local GLBT center in promotion of his new album "All For Show". I was very impressed and glad to meet the man that has made this wopnderful music. He sounds like a solid contender for upcoming artist and rivals all the Dave Mathews and John Mayer. He definitly has a Tracy Chapman influence. Trust me if you get this album you will not be disapointed.
What a great surprise!.......2003-05-05
I happened upon Eric by accident one day, walking into the HRC store in Washington, DC where he was playing. What a performer! He has a great voice, a confident, relaxed style, and his songwriting is superb. He's also an amazing guitar player, coaxing sounds from his strings with grace and bravado. I was blown away by his set. I bought his CD there and then, and I wasn't disappointed. On CD, it's easier to hear his lyrics and appreciate the beauty of his words. Some of his strongest work is heartbreaking. He most reminds me of Tracy Chapman with his combination of strong vocals, moving lyrics, and folk-rock appeal. Favorite tracks: Change Your Tune, Us Little People, Cold and Wish. Watching him, I was struck by how much more talented he was than those kids on American Idol -- although I suppose he's about their age. It's sad how we prefer our performers neatly packaged when there's so much raw talent out there. Eric deserves to be a star; listen to this and I bet you agree.
AMAZING MUSICIAN.......2003-05-03
This is such a great album! I have always been into acoustic rock and folk music and I must that this album has moved to the top of my listening list. He has such an amazing and capitivating voice accompanied with distinctivly percussive gutiar work. The heartfelt lyrics of this album pulled me in and really got me hooked on Eric. I love it!

Eric sought to achieve a quality solo effort which would highlight his songwriting precision and capture his impressive live performance. Eric Himan does that and more. Simply produced, this acoustic effort is a testament to Eric's skill as an up and coming musician.
