Let`s be honest. Most people who write reviewa on amazon are not reviewers, but mostly fans who write about music they love (sometimes loathe). And so I am not an objective judge of this music. The first Pentangle LP struck me right in the gut from the first note in the summer of 67: Sgt, Pepper was for everyone, Pentangle was for me. The solid, muscular and ever creative double bass of Danny Thompson bouncing off on the jazzy pulse of Terry Cox, the ghostly pure tones of Jacqui McShee, and the interplay between Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, perhaps the finest duo ever in the acoustic folk field, created a fusion of folk, jazz, blues, classical and rock unlike no other. The first LP was brilliant, but a formative stage of their sound. The second, Sweet child, contained some of their finest moments, but is at the same time an uneven mixture of different styles that don`t always come together. By their later albums, a tinge of tiredness was beginning to show. Listening through their output after having repaired my LP player, "Basket of light" stands as their finest hour, their one pefect album, having stood the test of time, sounding fresh and contemporary in 2007. The most striking is a luminous quality that shines through the tracks, making the title apt for the music. The songs melt into a seamless whole, with not a weak track and an internal logic in the choice and sequence of the songs. Light flight starts off with a bouncing mixture of time signatures showcasing how Jansch and Renbourn had grown from folkies playing with a slightly sloppy style to master musicians following Thompson and Cox into creative reaches of jazz fusion, Lyke wake dirge is a spine-chilling a capella medieval burial chant which arguably is the group`s finest vocal moment. Listen to the incredible interplay of the instruments on Hunting song, Terry Cox? glockenspiel adding to the "inner glow" that marks every track on the album. If you don`t want to dish out for the whole new 4-disc collection The time has come (also recommended), this album is, in my view, the perfect representation of all that this unique band stood for and achieved iln their glory days.

Basket of Light glows!.......2007-06-05

This is one of the most captivating albums from the heyday of English folk, retaining all of its sprightly joy & shadowy mystery some 40 years later. And what an eclectic range! From tradional English folk songs, often reinterpreted with contemporary touches such as sitar, to covers of then-recent hits ("Sally Go Round the Roses"), to their own originals, Pentangle mixed folk, jazz, pop, and even a little rock to create a distinctive, ringing sound. Standouts include the somber majesty of "Lyke-Wake Dirge," which always summons images of candlit stone corridors & Medieval tombs; the pure, achingly plaintive "Once I Had A Sweetheart," which seems like a pastoral tapestry brought to life; and the band's own "Light Flight," featuring Jacquie McShee's crystalline voice, soaring & dipping in the oddest but most magical of ways. This could only have been made in the mid-1960s, but it has a timeless quality, making it as fresh today as when it was first released. Highly recommended!

Simply the best. Buy it. Dig it. Love it........2006-03-19

This album is the best British Folk album ever recorded (Fairport who??). The album title is perfect as it fits the music.

As you begin listening a few thing kick in. The acoustic musicianship is sublime. The tunes are tunesome. You begin to feel good as you hum and tap your feet. Later on, you might begin to wonder what the point of amplified electrical music ever was. As the late sixties vibes groove into you you might imagine your self a flower-child in a basket of light...

Unlike some rather 'quaint' folk albums I've heard, this music is emotionally authentic. It's spirit is utterly modern, and the mood uplifting in it's sparkly jazziness. Past is fused with the future. Innovative musical arrangements refresh, with influences from India to the U.S.A., and from the 12th century (Lake-Wyke Dirge) to the 20th, so there is never a dulltime. Most covers are from the Scottish Folk tradition, which is the finest in Britain. Original compositions, such as 'Night Flight' are every bit as good. Jansch, Renbourn and McShee are Scottish, and the rythm section are English, making Pentangle a truly British Band. The album also has a 'rock' feel to it, so if you like rock music, and are looking for something a little different, then I would recommend this album to you without hesitation.

Finally, I just have to say that Jacqui McShee is a better vocalist than Aretha Franklin. And Bert Jansch and John Renbourn are superb guitar players. Danny Thompson's fretless acoustic bass playing is another musical treat. Buy it. Dig it. Love it.

My musically enlightened bass-player friend turned me on to this album when I was going crazy for Led Zeppelin, and I still listen to it 30 years later (as well as Led Zep). Jacqui McShee is one of the original "ghost girl" singers, who forshadowed gals like Maire Brennan of Clannad, etc. If you want to hear some of the most spine chilling female wiccan-druid vocals, hear "Lyke Wake Dirge" on this one. It is interesting to think that Page was thinking of patterning his post-Yardbirds band on Pentangle. Until he heard John Bonham... Other Pentangle albums don't always hit the mark, but you can't miss with this. Band also stars two of the biggest heavyweights in trad-acoustic guitar playing, John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. Have at it.

A seamless blend of folk, rock, and jazz, Pentangle's stunning instrumentalists manage to make the old a new and beautiful thing. Jaqui McShee has one of the most beautiful voices in popular music, John Renbourn and Bert Jansch are incredible guitarists and they work brilliantly together on this album performing some of the most melodic (remember melody?) music in pop, without ever being sappy.

Pentangle's Finest...........2000-07-21

Perhaps the first Brit-Folk Supergroup, Pentangle harnessed the talents of jazz bassist and drummer Danny Thompson & Terry Cox, classical/blues guitarist John Renbourn, blues/folk guitarist Bert Jansch, and vocalsit par excellence Jacqui McShee. It was always a fairly volatile set-up with so much talent around, but at its best (as on this wonderful album) it produced music of timeless quality. The hook track for this, their biggest seller, was "Light Flight", as haunting and enchanting a melody as you could wish to hear, and which had received a lot of exposure in Britain as the signature tune to a popular TV drama ("Take Three Girls"). Other highlights here are the heartbreaking "Once I had a Sweetheart", Jansch's wry "Springtime Promises", the tour de force "Hunting Song" and the other-worldly (literally) "Lake-Wyke Dirge". The quality of musicianship is superb throughout. Pentangles's finest album, and one of the finest folk albums of all time.

I HAVEN'T LISTENED TO THIS PARTICULAR CD, BUT I HAVE A NUMBER OF THEIR ALBUMS. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT OF THE PENTANGLE OF BEING IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN. EITHER YOU LIKE THEM OR YOU DON'T. GENERALLY, PEOPLE WHO LIKE THEM USUALLY STAY AWAY FROM 'COMMERCIAL'TYPE MUSIC AND LIKE MUSIC BECAUSE IT'S GOOD. THIRTY YEARS LATER THEIR MUSIC HAS, IN MY OPINION, WITHSTOOD THE TEST OF TIME AS TRULY CLASSIC. NOW A DAYS, THE FM STATIONS ARE SORELY PRESSED TO PLAY SOMETHING AS CONSISTANTLY TALENTED AS THESE MUSICIANS ARE. TO COMPARE THEM WITH ANY OF THE OTHER LIKE GROUPS AT THAT TIME IS LIKE COMPARING APPLES AND ORANGES. AND THAT'S NOT TO PUT ANY OF THE OTHER GROUPS DOWN BY ANY MEANS. IN MY OPINION, OF ALL THE GROUPS THAT CAME OUT AT THAT TIME SUCH AS FAIRPORT CONVENTION, STEELEYE SPAN, ALBION COUNTRY BAND, AND DANDO SHAFT, THEY WERE MUSICALLY THE BEST OF THE BUNCH. Disappointing.......1998-12-28

Maybe half the songs here are good -- about 20 of them. I mistakenly believed most of these songs were in the Steeleye Span/Fairport Convention/Bert Jansch school. Nope -- a lot of these songs are pretty disjointed and "prog". And, for some reason -- perhaps the digital remastering -- annoying percussion peppers this album (ding! ting!) But if you don't mind sitting around with a remote and zapping all the crummy ones, there are still plenty of good songs here. At 20 songs, I would give this 5 stars.

A MAGIC AND MASTERFUL ALBUM.......2001-06-13

It's hard to shop for Pentangle cds these days -- unless you stick to the newly remastered re-releases of five of their first six albums (the sixth, SOLOMON'S SEAL, is sadly lost to us -- the masters have vanished), throughout which the personnel remained the same, the original band: Jacqui McShee, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox. There have been other amalgamations of the band over the years, and all of the members have recorded some fine work since the band split up, but this original grouping was mind-boggling in their talent -- truly a case of the whole being much greater than the sum of its magnificent parts.

There are also many collections available of tracks from these fine albums, but be careful -- they're not all labelled as such, and the packages can be deceiving. Best stick to these clearly labelled re-mastered editions for the quality stuff -- and quality is exactly what the listener will find on this cd, their third, recorded and released originally in 1968, when they were at the height of their form and creative powers.

Jacqui McShee's voice is one you will never fail to recognize, once you've experienced its beauty. The vocals of Renbourn and Jansch each have their unique characters as well, and the blend of the three of them was something the likes of which British folk music hasn't seen since. The varied guitar styles of Jansch and Renbourn add depth and breadth to this music as well. Danny Thompson's work on standup bass, rooted equally in folk and jazz, was another hallmark of their sound, and his virtuosity has made him a valued contributor to innumerable recordings over the ensuing years. Terry Cox's tasteful percussion (including some achingly beautiful work on glockenspiel) adds the crowning touch to the 'sound' of this group.

You could hand-pick some of the finest players of these instruments in the world and put them together, but the sound of the Pentangle would never be duplicated. These five musicians drew from such seemingly diverse material as traditional British Isles folk, jazz, American blues and midieval dirges and chants -- and made them all their own. Nothing they did seemed out of place or forced in any way (And this mix worked in concert as well -- as the live half of their SWEET CHILD set will attest).

I wholeheartedly agree with the statement made by another reviewer of this cd -- if you buy only one album by the Pentangle, make it this one. Know, however, that all of these first six releases were high quality: PENTANGLE, SWEET CHILD, BASKET OF LIGHT, CRUEL SISTER, REFLECTION and SOLOMON'S SEAL. Once you've experienced BASKET OF LIGHT, I'll bet you're going to keep exploring the unique beauty that was Pentangle.

Absolutely fantastic.......2001-02-02

This is the Pentangle's best recording. It captures the band at the height of it's brilliance and creativity. The first album shows the band's potential, but the diverse elements within the band had not quite jelled when it was recorded. Their second album, the double LP "Sweet Child" is much better, and shows the band coming together and creating some wonderful music that represented what the band sounded like in concert. (Indeed half of that set was recorded live), But for this, their third outing, they pulled out all the stops, using the multitrack reording studio as a tool to create fantastic sonic constructions that could not be reproduced on stage. The results are simply spectacular. The blend of fantastic musicianship that always characterized the group, combined with their 3 or 4 years of experience playing together at that point, combined with the production techniques of whoever produced the album yeilded a masterpiece. Plain and simple.Sadly the group set such a high standard with this album that it was never again able to recapture it's quality. The next album "Cruel Sister" started to recycle the themes and sounds of this one and Sweet Child, and their final two, "Reflections" and "Soloman's Seal" are IMHO tired retreads.But at their peak, as shown on this album, Pentangle was one of the most brilliant and creative bands of the era, and one of the few whose music still sounds a good today as it did when it was first recorded. If you only get one Pentangle album, make it this one.

Wow, was this ever a great album! Originally released in 1968, it became their best-selling and best-known work, with enough energy and creativity to reach into the new millenium. Pentangle, for those who are young or foolish enough to be unfamiliar with them, consisted of Jacqui McShee, vocalist, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, guitar, Danny Thompson, double bass, and Terry Cox, percussion. Jansch and Renbourn are the most significant British acoustic guitarists of the late 20th century and are both still going strong; Thompson is (and has been) one of the very best session players on his instrument for nearly forty years; McShee and Cox are lesser knowns, but by no means unknowns. The group became celebrated for their experimental form of folk music that integrated blues, jazz, and even classical influences. "Basket of Light" has a lot of high points, but beyond the overall guitar interplay between Jansch and Renbourn I personally liked the highly rhythmic opening cut 'Light Flight' (from a British tv show), Jansch's 'Train Song,' and the atmospheric 'Once I Had A Sweetheart' best. The album even contains a very good cover of the classic pop hit 'Sally Go Round the Roses.' 'Still like it muchly!

Third-best Pentangle Album.......2003-10-28

The sound on this CD--which is not the DVD-A version the other review trashed--is great. Sweet Child is their best album, with Pentangle second, but Basket OL boasts several great tracks--more than on subsequent albums, which had too many stiff covers of trad folk songs, and often lacked the band's trademark jazzy/bluesy approach. That said, they are all worth having for true Pentangle/Renbourn/Jansch fans.

Terrible Sound Quality on DVD-A Version.......2003-05-30

"Basket of Light" is a classic Pentangle album (on artistic merit, I would give it four stars), but if you want to hear this music, buy the standard CD and avoid this DVD-A at all costs.

I have heard several different releases of these recordings over the years (LP, various CD releases, and now this DVD-A), and I'm very disappointed to say that the Silverline DVD-Audio version sounds TERRIBLE! The tonal and dynamic range is flat, dull, and lifeless -- a shock since the music on the standard stereo CD sounds like it was recorded yesterday.

Contrary to Silverline's claim, the music has NOT been remixed into "stunning 5.1 surround sound," it has merely been electronically processed to add fake echo and fake room dynamics. The standard CD in 2-channel stereo sounds more "surrounding" than the DVD-A! Of the 50+ multichannel DVD-As and SACDs that I own, this is by far the worst sounding, and it is the only one that I regret buying.

Classic Progressive Folk Rock Recording!.......2003-02-02

Pentagle is one of the first "progressive" folk/rock ensembles. Jaqui McShee's voice with Bert Jance & John Renborne's guitar, coupled with the other fantastic folk players on this record still moves me today. This is less in the traditional folk realm then much of the following records each did separately, or in separate groups. This was recorded in 1971 and the rock sound from the late sixties was still relatively new. Strong folk and band jam trends on this record. This recording stands on it's own. Fantastic spin!

Breakthrough Pentangle.......2006-03-14

This was the album that put Pentangle on the international map of popular music. The first song, "Light Flight," became a hit on British television, and then the folk/jazz/rock ensemble suddenly became celebrities.

This is probably their most "pop" album of their heyday in the sixties and early seventies, but it is a marvelously appealing production with fine acoustic instrumental arrangements and beautiful vocal harmonies. There is more overdubbing and layered instrumentation on Basket of Light than on Pentangle's other albums, which feature the band more the way they sounded live.

OK, most of you readers have probably owned this album before and are just wondering if there is any advantage to buying the dualdisc version. That depends on whether or not you have a multichannel sound system. The CD side is a nicely remastered version of the original stereo album with a two alternate takes of "Sally Go Round the Roses" and two previously unreleased songs. You can buy all of that on a regular CD. The DVD side of the dualdisc features the same entire album in 5.1 surround. The multichannel mix, however, is nothing revelatory. It widens the stereo field and adds some artificial ambience to the rear channels. I still have my old Tetragrammaton LP, and comparing the two, the engineers have cleaned up some hiss without hurting the dynamic range, but the multichannel mix sounds boomy--Danny Thompson's bass is tighter and cleaner in the original stereo. There are a few recording anomalies that sound like damaged tape, like at the beginning of "Hunting Song," which the souped up multichannel mix makes even more evident. Sorry surround junkies, but the guitar solo at the beginning of "Train Song" still pans between the front speakers like in the original stereo and not all around the room like it could have with more aggressive mixing. All in all, the new mix is pretty faithful to the original and doesn't sound any better. The dualdisc has video liner notes and photos (the same ones that are on the CD booklet), and since the medium is resistant to ripping, Silverline has also included mp3 files for your portable player.

Although I have been impressed with some multichannel remixes of older recordings, particularly the early Elton John albums, I prefer Basket of Light in plain stereo and find myself still reaching for the vinyl when I want to listen to it. The remastered CD is clean and warm, but there's something still appealing about hearing a stylus settle into its groove.

If you are not hip to "Pentangle" then you are really missing out on some incredible talent. This band from the 60's really puts it out there as far as Folk/Rock goes. The early stuff is really good, some of the later records were not as good but worth collecting.
