A Mesmerizing Album.......2005-07-28
Chick Corea's "The Mad Hatter" is probably one of his best albums. Some of the songs are strange but the jazzy parts are indeed excellent. Welcome are the vocals of Gale Moran and the performances of other collaborators (Herbie Hancock might be in this album but I'm not sure). Note the use of strings, percussions, and vocals in all the songs, not to mention earlier generation synthesizers.
One peculiar song that amuses me is "Tweedle Dee". It has a delightful but strange melody with a haunting vocal. The song is followed by a very jazzy "Humpty Dumpty".
I got the CD back in 1993. The CD was a German release. This time, a Japanese release is available and on sale on this site.

Brings tears.......2006-03-02
A few weeks ago I loaded some discs in the carousel, while I waited for my three brothers to arrive at my home, I chose two recordings with corea as a "side man",and the other one with him as the leader. While listening to the track spain from the priceless jazz collection on verve, I found my eyes welling up with admiration and sorrow, in that knowing the unfortunate reality that someone could be that talented, and for the most part, unknown in the world, outside of our community. As for the release,The mad hatter, all of the recordings from this period of the 1970's, were listened to often and loudly during my junior high and high school years, by my best friend and I , and they bring many fond memories.I RECOMMEND ALL THE CHICK COREA DATES FROM THE 1970'S SECRETDOMINO
Trad Jazz Transcended.......2002-05-23
I'll say right off the bat, I hate trad jazz - it gives me a headache inside of 10 mins. This album, to my mind, combines the best traditions of trad jazz, with a sort of group-orchestral improvisation - so that when Joe Farrell is blowing tenor, the rest of the group may be doing things behind him, or even in front of him, that you wouldn't expect in a 'normal' trad jazz comping.
And, basically, there's some extraordinary songs here, way outside of normal jazz conventions, and some very, very talented musicians playing and singing their guts out - it's a lovely, lovely album.
Excelent the best of the best.......2002-04-20
I herd this Albun when I was 16 years old in 1978. It's a master piece. You most have. They should remaster it.
A Really Mad Hatter.......2002-03-07
This LP shows Chick Corea at his best and better than ever!Chick swings in these nine tracks which include the title track featuring Chick with Herbie Hancock and Gayle Moran,''Humpty Dumpty''with Joe Farrell,Eddie Gomez and Steve Gadd and the 13 minute long masterpiece''Dear Alice''with Gayle Moran.
Chick Corea & Return to Forever - Returned to Greatness.......2002-01-06
This project is the icing on the '70's fusion jazz cake. The best fusion projects are The Romatic Warrior and the Mad Hatter. I can not leave out the My Spanish Heart Project which also topped the jazz charts of that era. Gayle Moran added her vocal flair on the Mad Hatter project that I enjoyed listing to at the Greek Amphitheater in Hollywood, CA. He and his orgestra finished their world tour at the Greek which featured not only the Mad Hatter Project, but most of the RTF Song Book. If the Amphitheater had a roof, the band would have raised it. This Project tells a musical story that is very creative and technically sound. This project features musical arrangements can be studied by all musicans, regardless of their skill level. Once I have purchased this project, my collection of the three most powerful fusion projects of all times will be complete.

Mad Hatter Carries The Torch of Progressive Rock.......2004-03-01
"Mad Hatter" is an excellent Prog Rock recording surpassing the quality of the band's previous release, "The Disregard of Timekeeping". Although it was never a big seller, don't let this discourage you from purchasing it. It's comparable to Led Zeppelin's "Presence" title, but with a less bluesy sound.
The vocals and guitar solos are phenomenal. "Mad Hatter" is Art Rock at its best, produced at a time when no one seemed to have much interest in the genre.
Led Zeppelin inspired to say the least.......2003-11-28
Bonham have taken their name after Jason Bonham, the son of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham (R.I.P.). "Mad Hatter" came out back in 1992 and it's obvious that the band is influenced by Led Zeppelin, something the listener realize immediately in the opening "Bing". Some of the songs in this (Zeppelin) vein seems a bit too calculated like "The storm", and I can't escape the feeling that young Bonham and Co feel that they have something to prove. Even `tho singer Daniel Macmaster is no Robert Plant, he's doing a decent job delivering what you could call the next best thing to the original. From time to time, Bonham are very good but in the long run it all gets a bit boring, at least for me who's not the world's biggest fan of Led Zeppelin. So when Bonham gives us a slight change of direction in the title track "Mad hatter" (which bare connection to Aerosmith and their 1970's approach like "Walk this way") it sure feels like a fresh breath.

Customer Reviews:
Shadowland returns! Great prog rock by an underrated band!.......2002-01-06
If I may respectfull disagree with one of the other reviews of this album... I have played this album many, MANY times since its release in 1996 and have yet to "yawn" during it! : ) SHADOWLAND (for those that are unfamiliar with them) is something of a modern progressive rock "supergroup", made up of some well-known players from the English prog scene; namely keyboardist Clive Nolan (Pendragon, Arena, Nolan & Wakeman, Strangers On A Train), Karl Groom (Threshold, Strangers On A Train), Ian Salmon (Arena, Janison Edge), Mike Varty (Janison Edge, Credo), and Nick Harradence (Threshold). "Mad As A Hatter" is the bands third release, preceded by 1991's "Ring of Roses", and 1994's "Through The Looking Glass". Many Shadowland fans consider "Ring of Roses" to be the band's best album (and to be fair, it is still quite a stunner 10 years later!), but I find that the music on the two later albums is a bit more varied, and at least equally enjoyable. Although critics often lump Shadowland into the whole 80's/90's "neo-prog" catagory alongside Marillion, Pendragon, Jadis and I.Q., I find that the music of Shadowland is fairly unique, distinctive and original! (more dark and brooding than anything you'd expect from Pendragon or Jadis, more variation of sound and style than I.Q., and more intricate instumental passages than you'd ever hear from Marillion.) Clive Nolan is definitely the leader of the project, and aside from his distinctive keyboards he also handles the majority of the songwriting, arranging, production, and even the lead vocals! Karl Groom also makes his presence felt with some gut-wrenching fret work, and once again proves that he may well be one of prog rock's most underappreciated guitar heroes! Instead of the harsh distorted squealing of so many rock guitarists, Groom uses a thick, warm, "clear" tone for most of his solos, and he has an excellent melodic sense as well. (Comparisons to Brian May of Queen, who also fuses melody and hard-rock riffs, would not be too far off base.) As for the songs? There are plenty of memorable pieces on offer here, and they give a good overview of what Shadowland is all about- The lengthier tracks like "U.S.I. (United States of Insanity)", "Mephisto Bridge" and "Mas As a Hatter" show the band at their "progressive" best with lots of mood shifts, mysterious lyrics, and dramatic crescendos. By contrast, "Zulieka" sounds quite jovial and upbeat for a Shadowland tune, while "The Burning" and "Flatline" provide the album with some dark, keyboard-dominated rockers. "Father" is the probably the closest that the band have ever some to a folky acoustic song, and the melodic and haunting "Salvation Comes" closes the album on a "anthemic" note - overall, a very satisfying collection of tracks. Shadowland are a band that tends to "grow on" their listeners (and this album is no exception), so it is best to give the album a few listens before passing judgement. Heck, I consider myself one of their biggest fans, and even I must admit that I had somewhat a lukewarm reaction the very first time I heard "Ring of Roses"...but further listens brough out qualities and complexities that escaped me the first time around. Shadowland are (in my mind anyway) a band that simply tries harder; and like many great progressive albums there is a lot going on in these songs, and many "intricate" moments that can take a few listens to be fully appreciated. Clive Nolan's lead vocals tend to be a point of contention for some critics of the band, but I find that his dark and intense delieverly fits the brooding quality of the words and music, and in fact, I have really come to enjoy his vocals. While it can be misleading to use comparisons, I suppose that Clive's singing is more akin to the vocal style of bands like U2 and Tears For Fears than it is to the usual "prog" vocal influences of Jon Anderson, Peter Gabriel or Fish, so perhaps his style just goes against peoples expectations of what "prog" vocals are supposed to sound like. But to me, the vocal sound is just one of the things that gives Shadowland their own unique flavor...and anyway, an ethereal Anderson-like tenor would simply not fit the dark, paranoid mood of Clive's lyrics! All in all, if you are a fan of Nolan's work with Pendragon, Arena, or Nolan & Wakeman, or just a music fan looking for something new and a bit different...by all means, check out Shadowland!
Another piece of excellent music.......2001-12-22
Well, I am a freshman in this genre, but I really love all that Clive Nolan is doing. I am not a so called snobe or great expert that could express his/her well based opinion about the singing or playing technique, etc. But I still think that C.Nolan is great both as a composer and as a singer. OK, he is not Sarah Brightman or Luciano Pavarotti, but he mustn't be!!!
Anyway, I already owe 2 Shadowland albums this one and Through the Looking Glass and am waiting for the Ring of Roses. I have all Arena albums, also C.Nolan and O.Wakeman's "Jabberwocky" and I still enjoy every piece of them!!!!!!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL AT SHADOWLAND, ARENA, PENDRAGON, etc....
Yawn.......2000-04-07
Clive Nolan, the keyboardist behind Arena and Pendragon takes on the additional role of vocalist for this release as with the other two Shadowland albums. It's not that Clive is a bad singer, it's just that the songs are so boring. If you're looking for Arena or Pendragon, then avoid this one... The other two Shadowland CD's, "Ring of Roses" and "Through the Looking Glass" are more interesting
