Leonard Cohen's deeply personal first LPs came out at a time when many of his peers were issuing furious, counterculture-inspired rants; he clearly had little interest in sticking with the pack at the time. So it makes a certain kind of contrary sense that Cohen would put out an offbeat topical collection two and a half decades later. The Future is an odd duck of an album; it's also brave, funny, and fascinating. "Give me back the Berlin Wall / Give me Stalin and St. Paul," Cohen petitions sardonically in the title track, adding, "I've seen the future, brother: it is murder." "Can't run no more with the lawless crowd / While the killers in high places say their prayers out loud," he intones in "Anthem." In "Democracy," he name-checks Tiananmen Square while surveying the United States ("The cradle of the best and of the worst"). Cohen has only improved with age as a vocalist; he sounds like a cross between Mark Knopfler and Barry White. While the polished production takes some getting used to, it's somehow suitable that cooing background vocals and programmed tracks temper these low-boil diatribes. To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Iz and his music are truely a breath of fresh air in a world full of cookie cutter music. He's a master of the ukulele, and has a voice as sweet and clear as a warm Hawaiian day. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" is beyond perfection. It fills the soul with joy and lifts you above the clouds...above the rainbow. A must for the Hawaiian music collector.

I got this CD mainly for "Somewhere over the Rainbow", but do enjoy the entire range of songs. Would recommend it, however, I probably will not buy any more of his stuff; a little goes a long way.

This guy has an amazing voice and this album shows it off very well. Contains the "Over the Rainbow" version seen on TV and many other songs. It is also a "political" statement in music. Iz was anti-US and favored Hawaiian independence. But, still an amazing album and music.

Never one to care much about Hawaaian music, these songs by IZ blew me away.I first heard his singing of Somewhere over the rainbow on a tv commercial. Had to buy the cd and I wasn't disappointed.His voice is soothing and sad and mellow. My favorite is Over the rainbow.

I know that is where IZ is now in the land of lemon drops and bluebirds. He is happy and singing his songs to the angels. Buy this cd and you will be very glad you did!

The Moody Blues' second album was also their first of what would be a succession of "concept" albums. Inspired by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper and utilizing the London Festival Orchestra primarily for epic instrumental interludes between songs, Days of Future Passed moved the Birmingham band away from its early R&B roots (as displayed on its debut album with soon-to-depart future Wings member Denny Laine) into uncharted rock territory, making them the early pioneers of both classical and progressive rock. The concept of the 1967 release was very simple, tracing a day in the life from dawn to night, from awakening to sleep. The seven tracks spawned two hit singles--"Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin" (which hit No. 2 four years after the LP's original release) and a prog-rock cottage industry. --Bill Holdship

`Cold hearted orb that rules the night... removes the colors from our sight... yet we decide which is right.... and which is an illusion."

Such are the spoken words which close this remarkable recording... leaving one almost breathless at the consideration of that thought.
There is some music that is simply timeless. Music imbued with a such a quality that sets it outside of the confines of time and space... a specialness that is unique among other works. The Moody Blues landmark recording, `Days of Future Passed' is such a special piece of music. It is both timeless and far ahead of it's time.

Technically their second recording release, (following `Go Now' with mostly different band personnel), for all practical purposes, `Days' is their debut album with the addition of the mainstay songwriters Justin Hayward and John Lodge. This record is astounding in every respect, from it's concept to it's orchestration to the originality, beauty and diversity of it's songs. The time period of it's release, 1967, was the absolute peak in creativity in the music world. And indeed, this album has no predecessor in terms of sound or style. It's an original new creation, and was executed with exquisite artistic brilliance.

This was the record that launched the careers of the Moody Blues, and it was a hard act to follow, probably especially for them. Although they went on to record many more great albums... In Search for the Lost Chord, On the Threshold of a Dream, A Question of Balance, To Our Children's Children's Children, EDBDF, Seventh Sojourn, and on..... most would agree they never exceeded the beauty put down on this one.

A very young Justin Hayward opens the suite singing `Dawn is a feeling...' and the rest is a trip that takes you along through a day with a variety of moods and emotions. What is amazing is the quality of maturity in his voice, yet he was only 18 when this was recorded. Amazing. The two most recognizable songs on the record, also Justin Hayward tunes, Tuesday Afternoon and Nights in White Satin remain the strongest Moody Blues songs in their 40+ year history.

The orchestration score complements the songs beautifully with a variety of segway pieces that connect the tunes in such a way as to lead one through a story. The score is credited to a Peter Knight, but research as to who this guy is leads to a dead end. I later read in an offbeat book that Peter Knight was one of many stage names for a man named Chuck Hamil, the brother of actor Mark Hamil who starred in the original Star Wars movie trilogy. It seems Chuck Hamil is/was an amazingly gifted musician who also wrote, sang and recorded many other radio hit records of the late sixties, such as those credited to a Scott McKenzie's `San Francisco' and others (Gary Puckett?)... but he never used his real name. Interesting details!

Regardless, the origins of the album seem to be shrouded in mystery. But the quality of the music speaks for itself. I always have felt there was something special about the music of the Moody Blues. This is the album that sparked that interest, which has never died since. Great art stands the test of time, and this certainly does.

You Gotta Have It.......2007-06-06

Days of Future Passed, the first effort of the 'Phase 2 Moody Blues', is one of those landmark albums that should be in everyone's music library, Moody Blues fan or not. Having hardly no exposure at all to the world of classical/orchestral-type music, I have to admit I haven't much of an ear for it. Frankly, my musical tastes just aren't that highbrow, so I realize I'm not able to fully appreciate this album. That is my biggest obstacle in truly embracing the whole of 'Days' for the masterpiece that it is. Oh, I dearly love the Moodies songs, but the rest, well let's just say I'm getting there. The more I hear it, the more I like the orchestral parts, what I as a simple country girl have always called Beethoven/rich people music. At this point in my musical self-education, I have to heartily give DOFP my big ol' stamp of approval. In reviewing, I will briefly(or not so) give my thoughts on each song along with a yay or nay vote.
1 'The Day Begins'- NO. Haven't fully acquired a taste for poetry or chamber music- yet. Sorry Graeme.
2 'Dawn is a Feeling'- YES. Mike Pinder's opener is just lovely and well-sung by Justin Hayward but Mike's voice wasn't in top form for his part, which fortunately was brief. Pinder has said that his reference to the "smell of grass" wasn't about pot, but looking back he realized it fit well with the times.
2 'Another Morning'- YES. Another Ray Thomas number. It had to grow on me, as I normally don't care for "kiddie" songs. He does such an outstanding job vocally that I had to like it.
3 'Peak Hour'- YES. John Lodge rocks me with this great song. It's the overlooked gem on 'Days'. I had read that it was the Moodies loudest number played live for many years. Wish I could have been there to experience it. Great lyrics- if I could just find the originals. I've seen about 5 versions of it online! Lodgie and mates sing it superbly and slap play the fool out of it.
4 'Tuesday Afternoon'- YES. What can I say about this classic that hasn't already been said before? I think it's THE best Hayward number on DOFP. Justin singing this song is a little slice of heaven in my headphones.
5 'Evening Time to Get Away'- YES. Oh yes, yes, yes. Hearing John's lovely voice- especially his falsetto- at it's best is enough for this gal. "Working, living it brings. Only way to have those things. Toiling has bought too many tears". Lodge simply nailed it on this timeless ode to the working class.
6 'The Sunset'- YES. Good song- only wish Pinder would've had a longer part to sing this time. He sounded great.
7 'Twilight Time'- YES. Ray redeems himself VERY well here. His subtle vocal literally carresses the lyrics- and my ears.
8 'Nights In White Satin'- YES. Brilliant song and THE ONE Hayward will forever be known for. Though I love it, it's not my fave of his. This song manages to be both beautiful and haunting all at once. Lodge's almost eerie-sounding, wailing chorus parts never fail to get me. WOW.
9 'Late Lament'. NO. Another poem by Graeme Edge. My sincere apologies Edgie. It's not you, really. It's me. You're a fantastic drummer to be sure!

'Days Of Future Passed' will forever be known as THE record that launched The Moody Blues onto the world stage. It did so for a very good reason: it's a ground-breaking, magnificent recording, created by the minds, hands and voices of five talented young men simply doing what they love- making great music.

Flagbearers for the "nu rave" movement they helped found, London's Klaxons make their full-length debut with Myths of the Near Future. Fans of the old rave, initially, will be forgiven for not knowing what all the fuss is about--beyond a dramatically punked-up cover of "Not Over Yet" by '90s chart star Grace, the Klaxons owe precious little to the synthetic rush of UK clubland past or present. Persist, though, because once beyond this realisation, it's possible to appreciate this band on their own merits. "Isle of Her" and "From Atlantis to Interzone" come on like brooding US punks Liars, all thrumming, distorted bassline and a vocal delivery that veers between desolate and manic (although the latter's whirling air-raid siren is very much the Klaxons' own addition), while on the other side of the coin, "Golden Skans" betrays an impressive ability for anthemic, harmony-laden pop. Lyrically, too, it's a confusing and fascinating document, fragments of "peacock's tails" and "madcap Medusa" emerging from the maelstrom. What at first sounds unfocused gradually makes a weird kind of sense; indeed, you suspect the Klaxons planned it that way from the beginning. --Louis Pattison

If you like their myspace songs you'll like this CD. The whole CD is fast paced which is good for "rockin out". There are a few songs which I personally dont like mostly because they are so repetitive but all in all it is very original and "new rave" (which really isnt a genre but whatever, ha) and its deff worth the 10 bucks.

from their mythical lyrics to their fantasy-themed videos, anyone can tell the Klaxons have a style all their own. coining the genre "nu rave," has only garnered more attention and support, smart move. and it's the perfect description. i really can't get enough.

order of preference: golden skans, interzone, not over yet, and gravity's rainbow are my top picks from the album.... but others are soon joining the list. honestly, turn on Interzone and crank up the volume. you won't be able to sit still.

lately most of my favorite music has came out of the UK. please, keep it coming!!

It seems that hype within the music industry develops earlier and earlier. Consider the case of UK group Klaxons who were featured on the cover of NME a whole three months before their debut album even hit record store shelves. At the time of attaining the coveted cover spot on the UK music bible the group had existed as a band for less than a year, and had released only one EP to go along with the countless remixes of their songs floating around on the Internet.
It would seem that the case of Klaxons can also be cited for revealing the limited number of responses people use to approach highly touted next big things: 1) Unquestionably buy in (dumb idea) 2) Backlash (dumber idea) 3) Buy in initially only to backlash a few months later all the while claiming `you were there' from the start (dumbest idea) 4) Thank Ms. Hype for the kind tip, then go hide in the corner alone with a set of headphones and decide for yourself (good idea, no?). And indeed the Klaxons seem to be experiencing all the potential responses. But the Klaxons are a band to take note of, and Myths of the Near Future is indeed a worthy and memorable endeavor that is likely to be one of 2007's best releases. Despite the bands short existence the growth between their EP Xan Valleys and Myths is quite remarkable. If you've never heard Klaxons picture a more daring version of Bloc Party with not one but three Justin Timberlake's providing the vocals. Intrigued? Take the risk, because the rewards are indeed great.

in each song and idea klaxons bring to the table it just seems like i've heard an echo of it somewhere in the independent music scene before. yet i can't pin it down. i love it for it's energy, and i'll continue loving it for its layer upon layer approach to a scene that needs depth in a major way. i don't regret my purchase in the least.

From start to finish, this album is ace. Just got it yesterday and haven't stopped listening. Will definitely be a fave for all time.

"Golden Skans" is my personal favorite.

Don't let them be pigeonholed by a genre of music. "nu/rave" or whatever. They're innovative and catchy, with a dose of 80's influence, yes. However, I grew up in the 80's, and we didn't have anything close to Klaxons.

This 25-song soundtrack to Julian Temple's biopic of the late Joe Strummer is not as much a retrospective of the punk-rock kingpin as an 80-minute radio show with the ex-Clash leader spinning the dials on influential favorites, such as Tim Hardin's "Black Sheep Boy," Eddie Cochran's 1958 rocker "Nervous Breakdown," and Nina Simone's 1967 version of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." Snippets of interviews and Strummer testimonials break up dead air between tracks, which include previously unreleased demos of Clash nuggets like "White Riot" and "I'm So Bored with the USA," as well as Strummer's toned-down solo work with the Mescaleros. But the real treasures lie in the rarely-heard-before: The Clash performing Strummer's "(In The) Pouring Rain" live in 1984, which never made an album; 1988's "Trash City" recorded with Strummer's Los Angeles combo the Latino Rockabilly War; and the 1975 UK-only single "Keys to Your Heart" from his pre-Clash band the 101ers. When the ancient Greeks were creating their myths, Gods and heroes, they had men like Joe Strummer in mind. Epic entities possessed of such intense power and influence that their cult alone could sway the course of mortal men. Dionysus thought flutes could cease all worry. Strummer's guitar thought you weren't worried enough. The most appealing thing to me about Greek mythology is that their Gods were flawed and their heroes doomed. Give me a God with a God-complex and I'm a believer. A tale of an effed-up fallen hero? We will tell that story till the end of days.

I'm glad Joe didn't go out like Sid or Kurt, but his passing was reported with a barely audible whimper. He deserved better. How many statues of Apollo are there? Joe never caused a plague. His aim was true. Release the doves!

There's a rumor going 'round that ..Julien Temple has made a documentary about Strummer called "The Future Is Unwritten". For reasons that defy understanding, it isn't being screened in the U.S. until November (maybe). Meanwhile, it's been playing in Europe for months. Just to rub a cake of salt into the wound of the frothy mouthed faithful, the soundtrack to said film HAS been made available in the states of disgrace.

Well...that'll do. It's easily the most riveting bunch 'o' songs I've heard all year. Back in the early eighties Strummer orchestrated a pirate-radio broadcast from a London rooftop, RADIO CLASH. It was probably pretty great but I wouldn't know because I never heard it. Nor did I have the opportunity to listen to his BBC shows from 1999-2002. What "The Future Is Unwritten" soundtrack offers is a chance to experience a bit of what those shows were like. You can play the U.K. version of The Clash debut until the needle turns to dust (and you should), but you won't get closer to the soul of the man than you will here. If you follow the arc of Joe's music...from the 101ers to The Clash to Latino Rockabilly War and the Mescaleros through to his last solo work on Hellcat...you see a man searching for a sound. A fearless sonic explorer. A man with an exotic aural appetite. Joe was an exemplary musicologist. He would have exhausted Harry Smith.

What if...you could sit in a room with Joe Strummer and have him play you some of his favorite records? How much would that be worth? Julien Temple, Ian Neil, & Alan Moloney have scoured those old broadcasts and assembled a jaw-dropping example. Running the gamut from Elvis Presley's "Crawfish" (from what is, for my money, the finest soundtrack ever...King Creole) to the live MC5 version of "Kick Out The Jams" to Eddie Cochran & Woody Guthrie...from Bob Dylan to Nina Simone. If you've never heard Tim Hardin or Ernest Ranglin before, you will certainly be seeking them out upon hearing this.

Lest you think Andres Landeros' jaunty "Martha Cecilia" might taint your Mohawk, there's a healthy dose of the Strummer music arc I spoke of. A blistering (how else to describe The Clash?) demo take of "White Riot"...a Manna-from-heaven never before released Clash song "(In The) Pouring Rain"from a 1984 Seattle show...The 101ers classic "Keys To Your Heart"...Joe's indescribably beautiful instrumental "Omotepe"...and not only that, kids...but interspersed between all this are little sound-bites and introductions from the Punk Rock Warlord himself!

Whereas the Strummer/Cash duet on Marley's "Redemption Song" had reduced me to tears (3 ghostly heroes on THAT song? I defy you not to cry) a few years ago, this album is filled to the brim with life-affirming discovery and awe-inspiring passion...and F&*# YOU if that's not punk rock. The hell it ain't!

I think this is a great album! It is, of course, a soundtrack strictly speaking but it sounds more like a mix CD from a very cool friend with broad musical tastes. Yet it does all tie together because of who it's about. There are few compillations that cover so much territory and yet flow so evenly. I can't wait to see the film!

Insightful and entertaining eollection.......2007-05-30

It's hard living off the scraps that may come our way now that the great man has gone and I'm sure there will be some pretty crass compilations in days to come! This however is skillfully put together and paints a picture of the man through the music he wrote and the music he loved. The opening studio take of just his voice singing White Riot sends a chill and as the full song commences memories flood back of sweaty Top Ranks and the band blasting away within touching distance of the audience.Following thisThere is a very unusual rendition of Rock the Casbah in Arabic however the most part is taken up by Joe playing songs from his radio show all of which are special. My particular favorite is the U Roy song. Many of you will have bought the 'Front Line' album back in 76 as it was sold at a promotional price of 69p the track that appears here is a version of the original and to my money superior, what a voice!!
I enjoy this album because it flows and it something to keep as an aid to remembering Joe Strummer, the songs are linked by passages of dialogue, a sprightly sounding Topper Headon is just great to hear at last, but most moving is Joe's passage about the ability and power of people to change things. His voice seems to crack with the emotion and intensity of what he is saying and I'm afraid to say I cried again!!

4.5 star Hits album.......2006-10-11

With only 3 albums in the early 90's, the 4 man group from North Carolina, Jodeci, was one of the best R&B groups of their time, and maybe one of the best ever. Being a fan of rap I don't have many R&B CD's (maybe a dozen) but this is one I had to own. With 16 songs, you get some of their best as a group. Trax 1-4 are from "Forever My Lady" (1991), Track #5 is off MTV Unplegged album and is a remake of a Stevie Wonder song, Trax 6-9 are from "Diary of a Mad Band" (1993) and trax 12 & 13 are remixes of songs off that album, and trax 10, 11, 14 ,16 are from "The Show, The Hotel, The Afterparty" (1995) and #15 is a remix off that album. of the 16, 2 are classics, 1 is almost a lcassic, 4 are ok, the rest are good songs. I'd have liked to shear a few K-Ci & JoJo songs on here but I guess they only did Jodeci songs that all 4 members were a part of. Production is nice as well, DeVante Swing did 13 songs and Dalvun DeGrate did 3.

I ALREADY OWN "FOREVER MY LADY" ALSO & THIS COMPILATION COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. THERE ARE KEY REMIXES MISSING! "COME & TALK TO ME" (REMIX), "I'M STILL WAITING" (SWING MOB REMIX) & "FEENIN'" (ERICK SERMON REMIX). THE REMIXES WERE THE BEST SOUNDING TRACKS OF JODECI'S TENURE ON THE CHARTS! AND THEY ARE NOT HERE! WHAT A SHAME....BUT IT'S A NICE COMPILATION FOR THE AVERAGE LISTENER....

Classic R&B Group's Grestest .......2006-02-14

This compilation is very good, and it has all of the hits, from their first hit in 1991, Forever My Lady, to their last hit before they broke up, Love U 4 Life. This compilation is very good, as Jodeci set their standard of the meaning of a good R&B group. (Boyz II Men did not set a standard, their style was used before by New Edition)To this Day, Jodeci has influenced acts like 112, H-Town, Jagged Edge, and most importantly Dru Hill.

One problem with this compilation is that they really should've added on a 2nd disc, to include K-ci and Jojo's hits as a duo, instead of releasing their own greatest hits, which was really a waste of time.

Memories.............2005-11-29

WOW! What a great CD! It is so hard to review a greatest hits CD at the title says it all: GREATEST HITS!!! They had some of the biggest hip/hop & R&B hits of the 90's and they are just as great when I crank them up today. Each song has a memory or a story tagged to them taking me back to that moment in time. It's all here....not missing a beat. Some of the remixes we could have lived without but that still does not take away from all the great hits that are on here. They have all their great slow jams from "Come And Talk To Me", "Forever My Lady" to "Freek N You" & "What About Us".

This is a must have for those of you who jammed out to these songs when the originally came out or for those of you who just appreciate good ol' R&B. Truly a gem!

STAAAAY, FOR A LITTLE WHILE!!!.......2005-11-29

I am "Feenin" for the days when a guy group could sing!!! These bad boys were "IT" back in tha day!! Every song reminds you of brothers seriously singing to their girl. All the classic Jodeci songs: "Stay", "Come and Talk to Me", "Feenin" "Lately" are all on here. The only one missing is "Ride & Slide" from the "Diary of a Mad Band" album, but hey, I have that album so I'm ok with it missing from this complitation.

Here's to Jodeci! Come back fellas!

Taken in one concentrated best-of dose, it becomes evident what a coup the B-52's pulled off when they turned their own concentrated craziness into genuine hits. This is some of the weirdest stuff ever to make the charts, much less be loved by the masses. It's all here though--the mad surf guitar of Ricky Wilson (and later Keith Strickland), the banshee wails of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, and, of course, the, um, well, let's say vocalizing of freaky Fred Schneider. "Party out of Bounds" with a "Rock Lobster" on "Planet Claire," or "Roam" over to the "Love Shack" in "Private Idaho." Whatever you do in the B-52's universe will at least be good, clean, perverse fun. Contains two new songs. --Michael Ruby

Awesome compilation of the B52s kind of off-beat, wacky, yet lovable and totally listenable music. The lyrics of many tunes are weird but funny. Scneider's goofy singing style somehow works well too. Lots of tracks here, including lesser-known gems. Especially cool tunes: Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Mesopotamia [kinda eerie in a way], Love Shack [probably the one with most radio play back in the day], Roam, and Good Stuff. But all are solid. Very good CD to pop in and just let play, no need to be anywhere near the skip button.

Review number 62. Fantastic eighteen track retrospect compilation of this reunited TOP of the line '80's new wave band. As for this genre of music, it JUST doesn't get much better than this. I saw the B-52's play a free gig at an outdoor mall just last summer and it was honestly one of the funnest concerts I've attended in sometime. As for this CD, you get to fully experience once again the college radio staples and some of the band's lesser known goodies, like "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Party Out Of Bounds", the unreleased 'original' edit for "Summer Of Love", "Love Shack", "Roam", the awesome "Is That You, Mo-Dean?" plus two new cuts, of which both are good. What, no "Dance This Mess Around" ? That's my personal B-52's favorite of all time. Nonetheless, 'Time Capsule' is still highly recommended.

B-52's.......2007-02-03

I saw Rock Lobster done "live" on Saturday Night live back in the early 80's. They did a good job. I thought that they were just another Punk band. But they showed their Pop sensiblities with "Rock Lobster." It didn't hurt that it turned out to be one Major hit! Of course, "Love Shack" and "Mesopotamia" were not far behind. A classic album all the way around - Five stars for the B-52's Tan-Ru!! (whatever that means...)

Hair Today, Here Tomorrow.......2006-06-10

Every once in a very long while a thoroughly delightful group appears out of nowhere with something new to say and a distinct, immediately identifiable way of saying it. Such is the case with the B-52's who pull off a nearly impossible trick and make it look easy. For starters, they are musically intoxicating and certainly can't be topped for dance party appeal. The vocal blend of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson is a lovely, natural fit, and Fred Schneider's droll, spoken word additions provide an effective and often hilarious counterpoint. Keith Strickland knows that a band like this needs basic, pure drumming, nothing flashy, and he delivers. The late, lamented Ricky Wilson provided great retro surf guitar, right on time and target. The frequent use of left-field sound effects sprinkles the songs with splendid surprises.

The song writing, especially lyrics, is always slightly cracked and completely charming. Catchy tunes devoted to poorly planned parties, ruins in Mesopotamia, and making love in strobe light are delivered without irony; no matter how absurd the subject it all seems to make sense when the B-52's do it. As good as these individual contributions are, it is the collective vibe and sensibility that sends this group over the top, their Own, Private I Don't Know is recognizable from 100 paces.

While several anthology CDs are currently available, this one shines most brightly. I was considering the 2-CD compilation, Nude On The Moon, but decided against it after learning about the alternate mixes, etc. Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation has the absolute requisite B-52's hits you can't live without, and plenty more besides. Nice to know that future generations will have quality neo-absurdist surf-guitar dance party music to enjoy - they'll need it.

Leonard Cohen's deeply personal first LPs came out at a time when many of his peers were issuing furious, counterculture-inspired rants; he clearly had little interest in sticking with the pack at the time. So it makes a certain kind of contrary sense that Cohen would put out an offbeat topical collection two and a half decades later. The Future is an odd duck of an album; it's also brave, funny, and fascinating. "Give me back the Berlin Wall / Give me Stalin and St. Paul," Cohen petitions sardonically in the title track, adding, "I've seen the future, brother: it is murder." "Can't run no more with the lawless crowd / While the killers in high places say their prayers out loud," he intones in "Anthem." In "Democracy," he name-checks Tiananmen Square while surveying the United States ("The cradle of the best and of the worst"). Cohen has only improved with age as a vocalist; he sounds like a cross between Mark Knopfler and Barry White. While the polished production takes some getting used to, it's somehow suitable that cooing background vocals and programmed tracks temper these low-boil diatribes. In 1993, the night of Clinton's inauguration, I watched the MTV Rock & Roll Inaugural Gala, and Don Henley did a great set on that program, which was hosted by Dennis Miller.

Henley did some of his old Eagles songs and a few of his solo hits, but when he introduced "Democracy", written by, as he said, one of the greatest singer-songwriters anywhere, Leonard Cohen, and then went right into the song, I was hooked right away.

"Democracy" was the most intelligently written song I'd herd in a very long time, and when it opened with "Those nights in Teannemmen Square"
Leonard Cohen's words had my full attention. I needed to hear more.

"I can't Run no more with that lawless crowd, while the killers in high places say their prayers out loud. But they've summoned up, they've summoned up, a thunder cloud - They're gonna hear from me!" Cohen intones in "Anthem". Words that ring through to the present day!

Playful words in "Closing Time", a Rock & Roll apocalypse in the title track, the raw sexiness of the lyrics, all combine to make "The Future" a CD I keep going back to over and over again afer all these years.

Years ago I turned a co-worker friend of mine on to the song Democracy,
and later after he died, I put that tape on in my car, and got the distinct sense that he was alive again and riding right there in the car with me, just to hear that song that we both loved so well.

This is a good CD for background music or long trips in the car. The lyrics are worth listening to without the music. Leonard Cohen is a great poet.

The voice. A gruff gatekeeper, but holy s--t, it is protecting some prophetic wisdom and blessed poetry!

These songs, to me, are the modern-day gospel hymns. I challenge any music lover not to be seduced by waiting for the miracle. I challenge any eye not to tear up listening to anthem.

Most of this great album is featured on "The Essential Leonard Cohen", which I've owned for a few years. Still, I bought "The Future" to enjoy the great songs I knew in their original order and context and to hear the few tracks that aren't on the later compilation. In whatever order, songs like "The Future", "Democracy", "Waiting for the Miracle", "Anthem" and "Closing Time" are all Cohen classics--each with its unique element of anger, irony, longing, reverence or joy. It's a dream of mine for someday, someone to sing "Anthem" at my church, perhaps even me. Of the "non-essential" songs, "Light as a Breeze" was the best--perhaps Cohen's most erotic song ever, though I haven't heard everything. "Be For Real" was a very loving cover--right down to the closing "Thanks for the song, Mr. Knight". Being a fan of lyrics, "Tacoma Trailer" didn't do as much for me. I'll excuse "Always" as a paean to Irving Berlin and a chance to loosen up in front of the mike. It doesn't sound like this one was done in very many takes. I haven't listened to all of Cohen's albums to be able to say that "The Future" is the best, but with its concentration of great songs, it's got to be right up there.

"Closing Time" is a masterpiece. Leonard Cohen is a genius. Give yourself a little time to get use to his voice if it puts you off at first. I believe he is the best songwriter ever, but I know some Dylan fans who would want to beat me up for saying that. After you listen to this, get a "greatest hits" album. Then, you'll be ready to continue your Cohen odyssey.

Fun album...bad CD!.......2007-07-29

Recently I was going through some old LPs I had sitting around and listened to this on a skipping vinyl copy and thought,"What a fun little psychedelic album. I'll have to buy it on CD."

So,at a local store I saw this album on CD and grabbed a copy.

Well,first off let me just say that there was no expense wasted on the booklet,....I mean NO money was used to print this! Ha! The cover is cut off ,meaning the artwork that used to read "Children of the Future" when you opened the album cover up completely now just says "The Future" because the back cover was ruined for the CD issue(small gripe ,right?).Next open the booklet and what's there.....NOTHING! No words no artwork ....a big NOTHING!

SECOND,take the CD out and listen. Since I'd just listened to the LP I was shocked when I played this....the bass guitar was EQ'ed right out of the sound! This was an LP not too unlike the sound of a CREAM LP....with bass in-your-face. Now the album is crystal fragile with ,like another reviewer put it,"no presence",....and what is a psychedelic album without presence? Ruined,that's what it is. So,another tin-eared mastering job kills what used to be a fun experiment in sound for Steve Miller and his Band.

This IS a good album,but you can't tell by listening to this ham-fisted re-issue. I have to go and buy a used LP of it somewhere,....and wait for some well mastered CD of this album to come out in the future.

A Remix? or what?.......2007-06-01

I loved Steve Miller's early work back in the days in San Francisco. I saw the group several times at the Fillmore and Avalon ballrooms. I had the original vinyl LP. It sounded great. This CD seems dead with no ambience that was in the original. Did they remix it or am I just dreaming?

Not Good.......2007-03-12

Surprised he got a second album after this turkey. Sailor is a little better. Very indulgent, you never start with your Sgt. Pepper, can't understand who he thought he was on this debut album. Pesky sound effects, 2 minute buildups to dissappointing songs. A little off key in places.

One of Steve's Best.......2007-01-11

Starts out kinda psychedelic with noises and all for the first minute or so then is very listen able. I bought this back when it was first released on LP. But eventually went to Cd's and LP's. This album has two driving upbeat songs I really like. It all blends into one another well. If you like a lot of versatile blues-rock music this is a good place to start.

The best Steve Miller album.......2006-08-04

This early incarnation of the Steve Miller Band with Boz Skaggs is a great example of Miller's early blues laced psychedelia, before slick production polished and perfected his sound. Highly recommended!
