4 out of 5 stars Tea Leaf Green - live!.......2007-07-17

"Rock 'n' Roll Band" is the soundtrack to the Tea Leaf Green film by the same title. This disc plays a 5/19/06 show at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado. Here the band rocks out some fan favorites like 'Jezebel' and 'These Two Chairs.' While the portability is a strength, it misses the DVD's surround sound capabilities. On this CD, the listener trades three songs ('Frank Hanzerbeak,' 'Make A Connection' and 'Taught to be Proud') from the DVD ('Morning Sun,' 'Don't Let It Down' and 'Sex in the 70's'). While Tea Leaf Green may have a growing and dedicated following, there's little here that distinguishes the group from any other rock 'n' band. The song writing is average. While the improvisation is strong, there's no voice or sound that really distinguishes these guys from any other straight rock jamband. That written, "Rock 'n' Roll Band" stands as a good soundtrack and an effective introduction to one of the scene's rising groups.

5 out of 5 stars Rocks today just like it did in the 90's.......2005-12-21

I grew up on this disc. There are albums out there that when you listen to them they take you back. This is it for me. Virtually the whole album is significant. The Innocent and Fly Me Courageous are just about as good as it gets. If you have never heard Drivin' n Cryin', do yourself a favor and at least listen. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars "Mainstream" Rock from dnc.......2005-06-22

dnc's label, Island, pushed Kevn Kinney, et al toward mainstream hard rock with this release, hoping to get a band that would both rock and possess universal appeal through superior, socially-conscious songwriting (like Midnight Oil or late-80s rem). The result is the band's best-selling record, _Fly Me Courageous_. The increased contribution of hard rock guitarist Buren Fowler and the paring down of the softer side of dnc's personality led to a solid rock record which featured memorable, melodic riffs and rock radio tunes such as the title song, "Build a Fire," and "The Innocent." The country-fied "For You" balances the bombast, as does the Petty-esque "Let's Go Dancing," but mostly the band goes for the "Rockin' in the Free World" approach. Producer Geoff Workman (whose credits include Motley Crue) adds considerable polish to the band's sound, but while it almost put them over the top, the record is not quite as unique as their previous two efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Great rock record!.......2004-04-29

This is how rock records should sound - fresh! Listening even today there's no sign of cliches or recycled ideas. It's a great sound - a twinge of the south and a crunch of arena rock blended together.

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2002-08-05

anyone who thinks that this cd is terrible compared to earlier dnc albums is insane. if all your looking for is the same song structure as everyother previous song, than you should stick with the old ones and not insult an awsome peice of artwork. dnc are probably the best song writters in their genre. this cd just shows more of their flexibility to create great music and not bore the world with new lyrics to the same old songs. this cd is a great change yet keeps with their poetic nature of previous material

4 out of 5 stars Stupid lyrics, great songs.......2002-04-26

The previoulsy mentioned stupid lyrics make no real sense and make recomending this cd a little risky if your friends listen to the words closely. But the cd easily redeems itself with its [good] melodies and gutiar work. Okay it is a little comercial compared to their other cd's but who cares it does rock (just don't try to find inspiration or logic in the lyrics).

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2006-11-06

I first heard the group on a radion station while living in the South and loved the way they sang. When I moved back to the West Coast I decided to buy the CD and love the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars MYSTERY & WHISPER IN TOP 30 EVER .......2006-07-11

Drivin n Cryin and Led Zeppelin are my two favorite bands ever. Mystery Road & Whisper Tames The Lion are DNC at their best.

This and Whisper include some of the best southern/bluegrass/folk/laid back music on the planet.

All the songs are great! My absolute favorites are:

AIN'T IT STRANGE
TOYS NEVER PLAYED WITH
WILD DOG MOON
PEACEMAKER
MALFUNCTION JUNCTION

5 out of 5 stars Brings back memories.......2006-01-04

This was the current release when dnc played the yearly Winterfest concert at my high school in Chattanooga, TN. That was probably the loudest show hosted at the school up to that point, and one of the biggest names to play one of the Winterfest shows.

I was a sophmore at the time, and found their music to be different than most of what was popular at that point. While it's possible to mindlessly sing along, most of the words of all the dnc songs have some sort of meaning, like the helplessness of an elderly man losing his home in "House For Sale," and pride in Southern scenery found in "Honeysuckle Blue." And who hasn't been drunk and belted along to "Straight To Hell?"

While this album was the current one at the time of the show, the band treated us to some cuts from the soon-to-be-released "Fly Me Courageous."

This album is a good one to look at the band when their reputation was building, and their sound was evolving toward the hard-rock sound that brought them onto MTV.

5 out of 5 stars Classic dnc.......2005-06-22

This record remains the favorite of most dnc fans, since it comes from their most creative and unique period. Continuing the previous record's ("The Whisper Tames the Lion") balancing act between hard rock and folk, "Mystery Road" brings these two aspect's of the band's sound closer together by delving into southern rock--"Toy Never Played With," "Wild Dog Moon," and the anthemic "Honeysuckle Blue"--and by upping the ante on the folk/country side with the top-notch writing (veering from story-song and socio-political rant) of "Ain't it Strange," "With the People," "Peacemaker," and the band's signature song "Straight to Hell," a trash-country sing-along if ever there was one. And I haven't even mentioned "Wild Dog Moon," a "Rocket Queen"-style anthem. In 1989, reviewers were apt to mislabel the band as "southern rock," but it's more than that. If your tastes include Neil Young, Son Volt, or like bands, then you might like "Mystery Road."

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.......2005-06-10

For the longest time the only DNC album I had was "Fly Me Courageous". This album was so out-
standing I couldn't believe this band wasn't huge. After hearing "Mystery Road" I think I have a
better understanding. This isn't a bad album by any stretch, but it doesnt have the same
infectious grooves as FMC. The best songs on this album can be found on other compilation albums,
most notably, "The Essential Live Drivin N' Cryin" which I own; "Honeysuckle Blue", "Straight To
Hell", "Peacemaker" and "House For Sale" can all be found on the live album in much stronger
form. For the just-curious or beginning DNC fan I would recommend this route.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2006-07-02

I am a new fan to this old band and the music is timeless. Because they are from Georgia and never received national air play, at least not in my home town of Dallas Tx. I never heard of them until I moved to Atlanta. Every track is good and great to jam while on the road or chill to around the house.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music, Weak Packaging.......2005-06-22

While this contains most of the songs that casual fans would consider dnc's best (they were actually selected by the band to please the fans), it's not the most well thought-out greatest hits collection I've ever heard. Heavy on cuts from the most popular records ("Mystery Road" and "Fly Me Courageous") the record nearly skips the last two releases and steers clear of rarities (except for the excessive live version of "Toy Never Played With"), never persuading the first-time listener that dnc was/is a great band by giving a sense of their uniqueness or their trajectory through 15 years (in 2000) of constant touring and recording. Some deep cuts or rarities might have helped with that. Also, I am disappointed with the quality of the mastering. Still, this material roughly coincides with their greatest hits live album and at least touches on all seven studio albums.

4 out of 5 stars Fallen angels and growing up........2003-01-03

To be honest, though I love this band and have met Kevn Kinney a couple times, I only listen to this CD for the first song on it and the last two songs on it. Those songs, particularly "Telling Stories," remind me of what I like about the band. Evocative lyrics, fun if wistful tone and a nice, homegrown acoustic feel to the music. When Drivin N Cryin start to rock out more, though, they lose me. I like it better when it's just the guitars and Kinney's gravelly voice.

4 out of 5 stars Hard Band to Anthologize.......2002-11-21

Drivin'n'Cryin' is one of those bands whose career does not easily lend itself to summarizing, mostly because of their idiosyncratic songwriting and a lack of real hit singles. That said, "Ultimate Collection" does a reasonable job of presenting this quirky band of modern southern rockers in a favorable light. Contemporaries of R.E.M. and the B-52s on the 1980s Athens/Atlanta rock scene, the band's music had of a regional flavor and they carried the torch of southern rock laid down by 1970S luminaries Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers.

Highlights on this package include five tracks (numbers 10-14) from their 1991 breakthrough "Fly Me Courageous," early classics "Honeysuckle Blue" and "Straight to Hell," and later triumphs "Indian Song" and "Telling Stories." As with any band that lacks obvious hits, it is always possible to quibble. Most obviously missing are "Check Your Tears at the Door" from "Whisper Tames the Lion," the lovely ballad "Right Side of Town," from "Wrapped in Sky" and their smokin' version of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" from their final, self-titled album.

Overall, a decent career retrospective from a horribly overlooked band that always deserved a bigger audience.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Cd, But...........2001-05-31

I love Drivin and Cryin. They always have been a southern, gritty, hard rock kind of band. All their songs have great hooks and the lyrics are deep. All the hits are on this one. Build a Fire, Fly Me Courageous, Straight To Hell, HoneySuckle Blue,etc...I would have given this cd 5 stars, but they left out a song that should have been on it. Around the Block Again should have been on there off of Fly Me Courageous. Other then that, its a great cd, and I would recommend it to anyone....

The Radiators are in fine form with this self-titled disc of studio originals. Keyboardist and percussionist Ed Volker's lyrics aren't going to set anyone's brain on fire, but the Rads have all the chops you'd expect from a group that's racked up thousands of performances. "Deep in My Voodoo" and "I Don't Speak Love" boast easy, melodic hooks, and they keep on coming through "Falling Through the Bottom Line" (which offers the CD's hottest guitar riffs) and "Crazy Mona." "These Fugitive Dreams" and especially the call-and-response rocker "Untouched By Human Hands" are lesser tracks. What you've got here is a rock-solid ensemble that's a bit derivative but hardly the weaker for it; indeed, one listen to this disc will encourage you to catch the Rads' live act, so one good thing will lead to another. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Deep In My Voodoo - and at a deal too good to pass up!.......2005-02-16

I've never seen the Radiators (not yet at least!), so I can't compare these songs to the performances they must be capable of, but I've gone wild over their latest (1/2004) live recording - Earth vs the Radiators. Quickly I bought some of the recommended studio releases (all at cheap prices, but this one for only pennies, an amazing deal!). And while none of the studio work comes close to showing the virtuostic playing and playful energy of the live recording, this one has grown to be my favorite (Law of the Fishes (1987) is okay, solid 80's pop/rock songs, but not indispensable, New Dark Ages (1995) is good, but this self titled one (2001) has a few really good songs - Deep in My Voodoo, I Don't Speak Love, Salty Jane, Crazy Mona - as well as a strong showing of mostly ordinary, if slighty twisted, finely crafted pop songs. Like a mix of Little Feat and Springsteen these guys have an all American sound.

Having been around for 25 years it seems they just keep getting better (bigger, richer, fuller sound).

5 out of 5 stars The Radiators.......2002-10-07

I have seen this band live many times, and own a number of their records. I love this album. The Radiators continue to grow as musicians and artists.

4 out of 5 stars Solid outing from New Orleans' legends.......2001-09-02

These guys have been at it for over two decades and may have the most extensive active repertoire of any touring band. Their trademark sound is evident here, with a little extra studio polish. If you need a frame of reference, think Little Feat/Meters rhythm section, Professor Longhair/Dr. John keyboards, Allman Bros/ZZ Top guitars and lots of New Orleans gumbo. Check it out, and don't miss them live.

2 out of 5 stars This is a great band's weakest record.......2001-05-16

I have all of the radiator's music. They have been one of my all time favorite groups for 15 years now. I have seen them live countless times, and I highly recomend that you all do so as well. As for their latest recording, it is poor. The song writing is weak. Don't write new songs just for the sake of releasing an album. I would rather see them release another live album with updated versions of their old standards, and more of the covers that they perform so well such as: Sympathy for the Devil, Born on the Bayou, Goin' Down the Road, Juke Joint Jump, Up on Cripple Creek, to name only a few. There are so many more that they have done over the years. The Radiators can be one of the hottest live acts on the road, but very little of their talent is revealed in their latest album.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it now!!!!.......2001-04-25

The self titled CD is great. They have been playing these songs live for a number of years and are finally available on a CD. My favs are Driver, Botom line, Taking the Long Way Down. A must own for Rads fans...I think I have to buy another one for my car CD player...Buy it now....

5 out of 5 stars outstanding - honestly.......2006-08-06

A friend turned me on to the live in Kingston cd and I was blown away. The song Honest Hour was the total hook for me - the lyrics are so descriptive and everthing flows to perfection. Great band - great album - great sound. Smooth - awesome - eclectic - down home - good time toe tapping - knee slapping put a grin on your face music.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cd I have bought in 6 months.......2006-02-07

This cd is just great. The Paul Henry and Speculator are outstanding. It truly is "An Honest Hour" of music. Assembly of Dust is where it's at.

5 out of 5 stars One of those CDs you can play the whole way through.......2006-01-25

I had heard some Strangefolk before, so some songs were familiar to me (like Speculator). That being said, you don't need any jamband background to appreciate this CD.
The tones of each song distinguish themselves. Reid Genauer is an incredible songwriter. Nate Wilson is one of the best piano players out there in my opinion. SOngs like "Honest Hour", "Roads", and "Man with a Plan" make the CD.
If there was a 6 star rating, I would give it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my BEST purchases of 2005.......2006-01-23

Radio in Key West, Florida is really bad...R-E-A-L-L-Y bad.

Now I have satellite radio...and life is good.

Anyway, I was jamming out and working on my computer, and this really killer song came on ("roads"...track 4). I was listening to the "Jam On" station, which really isn't my thing, but I can dig it now and again (I like to keep an open mind with all types music).

In this case, what was coming out of my speakers wasn't "Jam Bandish"...it was just beautiful music, plus it totally rocked.

I stopped what I was doing and just sat their blown away and fired up. That usually doesn't happen to me during a "first listen".

I typed them into Amazon to read what the customers had to say, and at that time, was surprised to find only two reviews(both 5 stars)so I thought "what the heck", shelled out some cash, and the rest is history.

I've turned this album on to so many people...and they love it.

It's fun music, and it has to be one of the best Live performances I have ever heard.

If you are open to good music...take a chance and give this album a shot. I am a critical S.O.B. when it comes to music and I proudly give this one 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore.......2005-12-31

The hook-filled first two songs, which got some airplay on our local AAA station, grabbed me like few others have in recent years. The rest of the CD is just as good. Superior songwriting and very tight ensemble performances all the way through. Until you hear the crowd reaction between songs you can easily forget this is a live album. I was immediately reminded of The Band -- Reid Gennauer's plaintive voice has some elements of both Rick Danko and Levon Helm and the harmonies are similar, plus the lyrics evoke Robbie Robertson's heartland-inspired classics. Mortality, fate and honor are handled with skill and humor. There are also echoes of Bruce Hornsby (particularly on Speculator) and some nimble guitar reminscent of Dickey Betts. I have heard other live recordings of this band, which are freely available, and I think they really are this good live without any studio sweetening. An honest hour of intelligent, unpretentious and spirited music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing Good Taste!.......2006-08-18

For those of you who are interested in the roots of much of the music that's everywhere, this is a perfect starting place. Here are three discs to show you where almost all great pop music, Post World War II, came from. It couldn't have been picked much better. There are vocal groups, jump blues bands, and thank God, some country songs. They seem to have done a great job with licensing and all that too. I had quite a few of these records and got this as a recent birthday gift, but there was still plenty to thrill me.

One warning: You'll want to follow up by buying almost everything you can by these great artists. It's a happy disease.

5 out of 5 stars "Roots of Rock&Roll.......2006-02-21

I've been collecting rock and roll for a long time, and there are some gems on this cd that I've never heard. This is a very concise, thoughtout, and meaningful collection. Oh to have been "back in the day" when these were filling the air-waves. This is a great cd. You will not go wrong.!

4 out of 5 stars Discover Your Roots, Don't Dye Them!!!.......2006-02-04

Most of us cats n kitties out there know that rock n roll was created from white country music and black rhythm and blues. That may be the long and short of it, honeys, but the truth is that this great big 3-CD box set also contains numbers that might be considered jazz ("Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop"), gospel ("Up Above My Head, I Hear Music In The Air"), musical theatre ("Ol' Man River"), comedy ("Riot In Cell Block #9"), and, of course, blues ("How Many More Years", "Hootchie Cootchie Man"). As a matter of fact, both country and r and b came from the blues, but that is a story best told another day. Roots of Rock N Roll: 1946-1954 contains all the above unforgettable performances plus too many more to mention, and the hip compilers at Hip-O records did a masterful job of assembling this assortment, guaranteed to reward listeners with hours of listening pleasure. A great collection, to be sure. However, in the interest of better informing the potential buyer, I feel I must add a couple of cautions. One: Although there are relatively few country selections (maybe half a dozen or so), I realize that country music is a polarizing genre, which means that some listeners really LOVE it and some really HATE it. These particular tracks, from Hank Williams "Move It On Over" (later covered by George Thorogood), to Hank Snows "I'm Movin' On" (later recorded live by The Rolling Stones---look it up!) are pretty soulful, but if you are put off by "steel guitars and a twang" at all, then you may not like them. Two: When you come right down to it, some of these choices don't stand the test of time. Example: Johnny Ray may be seen as an influence on both The Four Seasons and Dion and the Belmonts, but I confess I'm rather bewildered why his rather ordinary pop song "Cry" spent so many weeks atop the charts. And while Faye Adams recording of "Shakes A Hand" created tremors throughout the South when whites and blacks dared to risk arrest by reaching across segregated dance floors to shake hands every time this song was played, the truth is it's not that great a number. And while we're on the subject: "Shotgun Boogie" may showcase Tennessee Ernie Ford's cornpone persona to perfection, but "Sixteen Tons" would have been a much better choice; the latter number is one of the finest fusions of country, pop, gospel, and r and b ever recorded, and it's omission from this collection is a glaring one. Finally, the collection bogs down at times with too many slow numbers. For my money, the compilers could have doubled the number of jump blues songs and made a better collection. Still, don't let these rather minor troubles worry you. Rather, get this collection and marvel at how anyone could be a "Sixty Minute Man", find out where Elvis got his "Hound Dog" from, and, most of all, delight in the unstoppable energy of trains in such unforgettable classics as "Freight Train Boogie" and "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie"!! OUTASITE!!! So get Roots of Rock N Roll today and party down while deciding whether or not to dye your own roots!! Crazy, Man, Crazy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great collection offers the real history!.......2004-04-29

Typically, we're asked to believe that rock and roll started with Elvis. Or that rock and roll was, more than anything else, an evolutionary variation on country music. Or that rock and roll represented (and continues to represent) a white-black fusion.

Certainly, this collection lays waste to the first two notions. In his informative liner notes, Pete Grendysa tells us that rock and roll existed long before the main (i.e. middle-class white) record-buying public knew about it. And the country examples are relatively few. I'd have been happy if they were none, but I can live with the well-chosen examples here.

In particular, Hank William's "Move It On Over," while not exactly rock and roll (a two-beat pulse doesn't qualify as such, to my ears), does feature a verse identical to the first four bars of "Rock Around the Clock." And, like Hank Snow's "I'm Movin' On" (Disc 2, track 4), it is a hillbilly boogie in standard twelve-bar blues form. It's not far from the mark.

And The Delmore Brother's "Freight Train Boogie," from 1946, turns into pure Carl Perkins near the end, easily out-rocking anything Elvis recorded at Sun. Having heard other Delmore Brothers sides that aren't anything like rock and roll, I was surprised and delighted by this number.

But the black recordings are the real, and whole, point of this collection. Such sides have far too often been disgracefully dismissed by too many rock historians as primitive, artistically-incomplete efforts by African-American musicians struggling toward something higher--"something higher" meaning, of course, Elvis. But listen for yourself. Most of these African-American numbers rock with the force of a thousand Elvises. And these are not performances striving to become whole; they are more than whole. The musicianship, for the most part, is assured and aggressive and infinitely more competent than some of what was to come after rock and roll had conquered the pop charts.

Many thanks to the genius who thought to include Lionel Hampton's 1946 if-it-ain't-rock-and-roll-what-the-heck-is-it masterpiece "Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop" (with its wonderful, be-boppy jazz piano chords in eight-note triplets at the start). Many more thanks for Jimmy Preston's 1949 recorded-in-an-insane-asylum "Rock the Joint" (however did Bill Haley manage to tame this tune down so drastically?). More thanks, even, for Hal Singer's proto-surf "Cornbread" (1948), Percy Mayfield's masterful "Please Send Me Someone to Love" (1950), and Ruth Brown's superbly soulful "Teardrops from My Eyes" (1950, again--a great year for Soul).

The best compilation of its kind. If you want to know the real Story of Rock and Roll, you've got to hear the records. And they're here.

As mosh-pit success loomed ever closer for dnc, Island Records pushed them into this riff-heavy follow up to regional smash "Fly Me Courageous." The resulting affair continues the trend toward AC/DC-style brain-pounding rock that had begun with "Malfunction Junction" on the "Mystery Road" album. While the band owes debts to the Stooges, the MC5, the Dictators, other heavy bands from the 70s, much of "Smoke" veers too close to the spandex sounds of the 1980s. Tracks such as "She Doesn't Wanna Go" and "1000 Swings" sell the band short of their nouveau-Crazy Horse potential. Only half of the songs, including "Turn it Up or Turn it Off," "What's the Difference," or "Eastern European Carny Man" does the Georgia quartet remind us what kind of band they had been. The album failed to "break" dnc to a nationwide audience, but it did "break" them with Island and with guitarist Buren Fowler. When dnc returned after "Smoke," they steered as far away from the hard rock excesses as possible. For an interesting comparison, listen to frontman Kevn Kinney's 1994 solo album "Down Out Law," which showcases a number of songs squeezed from "Smoke" to make room for more head-banging.

4 out of 5 stars Very Underrated DNC Album.......2005-06-10

I recently purchased this cd through the Amazon marketplace for only a few bucks. It was well worth it. Granted, this album may take a few listens to appreciate, but it is well worth the patience. It is harder rockin' than "Fly Me Courageous". My favorite tracks are "Turn It Up Or Turn It Off", (which I think has some poignant lyrics despite its hard rockin melodies),"Eastern European Carny Man","Whiskey Soul Woman" and the quirky "Patron Lady Beautiful". Definitely worth it if you can get it cheap like I did.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2004-08-19

This is probably my second favorite D&C album. MYSTERY ROAD is my favorite. If you like heavy guitar riffs, than this album is for you. To me the best tracks are "Back Against The Wall", "Patron Lady Beautiful", "She Doesn't Wanna Go", and "Whiskey Soul Woman". The songwriting may not be the best, but, the guitars really rocks!. So if you like the hard-rocking version of D&C check this album out.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely have a Smoke!.......2002-12-12

Coming off the success of 1990's metallic Fly Me Courageous, which included two FM and MTV hits, Drivin' 'n' Cryin' returned in 1993 with Smoke, another collection of heavy, riff-oriented songs. Although both records were produced and engineered by Geoff Workman, Smoke had a less-polished, raw feel that should have fit right in to the new post-grunge world. But, as they'd done on many prior albums, they (or the label) made a horrible choice for the first single, the uninspired "Turn It Up Or Turn It Off," and the album never took off.

Which is a shame. While not as lyrically strong as prior albums, Smoke still contains some great songs; meaty riffs on insanely heavy opener "Back Against The Wall," the driving title track, the soulful "Whiskey Soul Woman" and Zep-homage "All Around The World."

And while the album is pretty heavy as a whole, fans of the band's lighter (crying) side will find some nice stuff here as well: the haunting dirge "When You Come Back," the wistful feedback of "What's The Difference?" and the slowly building Civil War epic "Patron Lady Beautiful."

Lead singer and songwriter Kevn Kinney has dismissed Smoke as too riff happy, and says he wrote the words to fit the riffs instead of the other way around, but it's still a classic album from one of rock's most underrated bands. Light it up.

2 out of 5 stars "Smoke" Doesn't Catch Fire.......2002-07-15

Quirky southern rockers Drivin'N'Cryin' followed up their best album, 1991's masterpiece "Fly Me Courageous," with the album that is easily their worst. Whereas "Courageous" is loaded with top notch songwriting and killer hooks, "Smoke" is marred by a decided absence of the same. Even when it starts to take off, like on the intermittentaly powerful "Patron Lady Beautiful," or the beautifully accoustic "What's the Difference," inappropriate sonic intrusions mar the groove. It's as if the band deliberately sabotaged their strengths in an effort to avoid merely repeating their past success. The second half is considerably better than the first, and the best song on the disc is rocking "Whiskey Soul Woman."

Overall, a failed effort that marked the beginning of DNC's unfortunate fade into obscurity. At their best, they were a force to be reckoned with.

1 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!.......2006-11-06

First. The production sounds terrible. Second. The music sounds even worse. It has a very slick production sound that lends itself to bubble gum sort of music. Not Reggae. I thought it was a joke at first but it is not. We resold it after we bought it.

4 out of 5 stars reggae and rock songs. very very nice..........2006-03-17

...cynicism aside, there are some covers on this cd that are almost as good as the originals. For me i really liked 59th st bridge song, sara's smile, heard it thru the grapevine, maggie may, master blaster, everybody wants to rule the world, and maybe one or two more. all the rest are not as good as the originals but they are really good covers, and add, and do not take away, from the overall collection. almost all of them have a "hearing for the first-time" feeling to them. These versions are more than just the original songs with a reggae backing tracks. they are well thought out and well performed covers. ALso if you do searches on amazon.com, you will find cds but some of the groups on this cd, and you can get a feel for the type of performers on the cd. they are some of the best of jamaica's sons and daughters.

I cant complain about this collection at all. well worth the time and the money.

cheers and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction or Addition to Any Reggae Collection.......2004-11-21

While I always liked reggae, this CD is what sparked my obsession after my Dad bought it in Summer 2001. It's smooth, potent, and strong and a very true tribute to rock artists like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and Green Day. There are even a few songs paying respect to R&B legends like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

This album contains songs by many of the greatest living reggae artists such as Toots & the Maytals, Ken Boothe, and Steel Pulse and is also crucial to any well rounded reggae collection. I encourage every reggae fan to purchase this CD and enjoy the Jamaican twist to many rock & roll superhits.

4 out of 5 stars 80s Indie/College Rock.......2005-06-22

Originally released on an Atlanta punk club's eponymous label--"688 Records"--drivin' n' cryin's debut record is a great example of college rock in the 1980s. While the aesthetic is similar to that of the Replacements, and the whole sounds as though recorded in someone's bathroom, Kinney's remarkably mature writing makes it essential listening for fans of the band or its leader nearly twenty years later. The top cuts include the title song, the punk thrash of "Keys to Me," the Garage/Folk/Psychedelia of "Another Scarlet Butterfly," and the blue-collar anthem, "Stand Up and Fight for It."

5 out of 5 stars Another Virtually Unknown American Band.......2002-03-13

Kevn Kinney creates a landmark 80's, American release. Beautifully crafted, furious tunes that grab you by the scruff of your neck and toss you right into the tumultuous, mid-80's pit of Americountry/Punk-n-roll. If you appreciate bands like The Replacements, X, or Camper Van Beethoven you have to obtain Scarred But Smarter without hesitation. Here's your chance to add an amazing release of yet another virtually unknown American band to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars their best cd that I've heard (I haven't heard ALL of them).......1999-11-07

There have been a few rock bands to come out of the Atlanta area over the years like The Black Crows, R.E.M., and stuff like that, but Drivin' N' Cryin' are definitely Atlanta's best in my opinion. Their sound is a little bit of a mix between alternative and maybe country rock. They're well known in Georgia, but I'm not sure how known they are in the rest of the country, so pick up this cd and give them a try! More than likely, you won't be disappointed.
