Album Description
Although Miles Davis's health was quite weak at the time of this two-CD set (recorded the same day as the album Agharta), he has a few strong trumpet solos on these two very lengthy pieces ("Zimbabwe" and "Gondwana"). Just after these concerts, Miles would go into an almost six year hiatus from music. The music here is stunning with the dense ensembles and heated solos (Sonny Fortune on soprano, alto, and flute and the guitars of Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas) being quite boisterous, but very powerful. Pangaea is one of the finest recordings from the least-understood period of Davis's career (1971-1975).

Prepare to be floored.......2007-07-19
You ready? You sure? Well, buckle up, because it's a hell of a ride.
Before I continue, I would like to ask you to picture John Coltrane's Ascension, or something else beautifully chaotic along those lines. Now picture it without the loud, abrasive saxes and trumpets. Instead, picture it with screaming guitars, heavy polyrhythmic grooves, plenty of keyboards, and Miles Davis, arguably the most creative force of 20th century music, in the center of this maelstorm. Now picture the maelstorm lasting for close to an hour and a half, and you have a rough idea of what Pangaea sounds like. Since the '50s, Miles had favored long improvizations, but when he entered jazz fusion, they got longer and longer, to the point where compositions that lasted fifteen, twenty, sometimes thirty minutes in length. Well, these two pieces make even the longest of those songs seem tame: Zimbabwe (41:48) and Gondowan (46:33). For those keeping score, this is a double-album, and each of these songs takes up a disc of space. So if you're allergic to longer stuff, this music is not for you at all. Gondowan happens to be the longest recording I own, and you're talking to a guy who buys every live Allman Brothers album he can get his hands on.
So, how's the music itself? It's great. As I have often cited in my fusion reviews, Miles once said he could put together "the world's baddest rock band" (bad of course in the James Brown sense), and he sure proved his claim here. That band can PLAY! And it's obvious that they came from the "rock" side of the fence. Because they do just that: they rock. They rock slightly less harder than heaviest rock band you could name me, and they take a ton more risks than, say, AC/DC ever did. Hell, the whole ALBUM was a risk. On Zimbabwe, my favorite part of the album, they just blow me away. The song's loud, crude, nasty, dirty, not an easy listen, but a very rewarding one: Miles and Sonny Fortune shine, while Michael Henderson, Mtume, and Al Foster provide a tight polyrhythmic groove for Reggie Lucas and Pete Cosey to improvise over. It's cool is what it is. No other word for it. They somehow manage to sustain the piece for its forty minute length.
Now I think about ten minutes or so of Gondowan could have been cut, since it pretty much reiterates everything Zimbabwe said, and those last ten minutes do wander a bit, but I really like that song's sound too, so I can forgive it being just the slightest bit indulgent. The first thirty-five minutes really do meet the standards Zimbabwe set, it's just that it spins off into aimlessness slightly later. Which is why the album gets four stars.
Those looking for a pleasant live set of My Funny Valentine, So What, Walkin' and maybe an encore of Someday My Prince Will Come probably knew that Davis was long past that point, and if they didn't, they probably found out and left the concert venue as soon as they could (assuming that this album's sister set, Agartha, hadn't inspired them to already). Miles fans looking for such a set today are advised to pick up the My Funny Valentine/Four and More album - it's good, and it's traditional, so those with a bias against fusion will probably enjoy it more than they to Pangaea. But if you're a rock or funk fan who liked In a Silent Way, B*tches Brew or Jack Johnson and is looking for more, I can safely say this (and Agartha) will satisfy you.
Review.......2007-06-13
I don't understand why this music is not acknowledged to be one of the great expositions of the 2oth century. It synthesizes all that is great in jazz, rock and modern music. It is also one of the best (if not the best) "guitar" album ever recorded. I had the great fortune to see this band perform in Avery Fisher Hall at midnight on July 4, 1975 (and sit next to a beautiful and young Cybil Shepard- who was with her date but left at intermission). The CD unfortunately does not capture the relentless sound that this band created. Buy a turntable and find the lp (it is a revelation). But even the diminished sound on the cd will give you an idea of how truly transcendent this band was.
OK, but not nearly as cohesive as "Agarta".......2007-05-09
I was excited to hear this set after reading a couple of reviews and knowing it was in
the same event as "Agarta". But after one listening I didn't hear the intensity or emotion of the Agartha set. The music just kind of meandered along for the most part, with flashes of fire from Sonny Fortune on sax and Pete Cosey on guitar. Cosey was absolutely brilliant on Agarta, with a 4 minute+ solo on the first cut ("Prelude Part 1") that leaves me breathless and near tears every time I listen.
To be fair this session was so dense and layered it more than a few listenings to really hear and experience the riffing. I still hear new stuff every time I listen to Miles and that's what makes Miles electric period so good for me, so I'm glad I have "Pangaea" but I like Agarta better.
Trippy, melodic, and out there!.......2007-02-17
This album has a lot of mixed feelings in it. Throughout the song "Zimbabwe" there just seems to be a lot of pauses but for the most part it's a pretty fast tune. On the other hand "Gondwana" is a bit slower than "Zimbabwe" but this one fades out and comes back and so forth and so on. Plus Miles does something I've never heard before on this one, he uses a wah-wah pedal effect on his trumpet! All in all, a good album but only listen if you have time to spare. Each tune exceeds 40min. Enjoy.
I heard it for the first time and I was in love.......2007-01-09
I downloaded music from Miles and uploaded it to my Ipod without knowing what everything was. When 'shuffle' put on Pangea I couldn't stop moving and I repeated the songs over and over. Of course I bought the album.
Miles at his best! If you like Miles, this can't miss in your collection.

Love this CD.......2000-06-21
Having seen Laura Love perform in Seattle a few times, I got this CD, and it is absolutely great. Every song is excellent. If you have eclectic taste in music you will want to have this. I have had it for several years and it has held up better than 99% of my CD collection.
love at first hear.......2000-05-05
Just got back from MerleFest in NC where she appeared. Caught the 2nd half of her show on Saturday, fell in love with her, broke my neck to see her 2nd act on Sunday. Bought Pangaea at the show since it was the only title left. Thursday I'm here buying Octoroon & Collection. Can't wait for it to get even better. Wish she'd break out on the bass.
Laura Love's best work..........1999-10-05
...which is why she keeps re-doing songs from it on her major label CDs. This one actually isn't full of over-the-top yodeling (I don't recall any "yodels" per se on it at all), so if the thought of that stuff puts you off, you should still hear this CD. Full of great songs, great musicianship, and lots of variety -- from rock to jazz syncopation to funk, etc., and no filler or formula material. I wish I could say the same for her latest CD (the pretty dismal "Shum Ticky"--other than the two "Pangaea" and one "Helvetica Bold" songs on it!).
An absolute favorite album.......1999-09-05
I agree with the previous review: Buy It! Poetic lyrics with music that makes me want to stomp my feet. And the yodeling is really fantastic. I bought the CD after hearing her live a few years ago (another experience I recommend).
BUY THIS ALBUM!!.......1999-05-21
If you're reading this review, you must be thinking of buying the album. Two words of advice: Do it! Laura Love is one of the best contemporary songwriters in any genre. This was the first album of hers I ever heard all the way through, and although admittedly it took a couple of listens to get accustomed to it (her voice is like no other), it quickly gained status as a constant-play item in my CD collection. She's rerecorded a number of the songs on here now that she's on a big label, but I still like the versions on this one the best. Give it a couple of spins yourself: you won't ever get the songs, or her voice, out of your head again.

It's alright........2005-01-02
The music on the CD leaves me wanting a bit more each time, but it never gets to that point.
The vocals are alright, but not perfect in my opinion. The music is good, but I think there could be better everything done in my opinion.
All around a solid CD, but I think there is room for improvement and then it will be totally awesome!
Solid CD.......2004-10-13
The lead singer/guitarist in this band Fred is actually now in the band Taking Back Sunday where he plays guitar and does some back up vocals. However, this band is completely different than Taking Back Sunday. They play an Emo rock that sounds a lot like the old Promise Ring meets pop punk. The vocals are sung very passionately and are rather smooth and laid back at times. Fred is the principle song writer and has a degree in jazz guitar from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA so you can here so Jazz influence in this as well.
my favorite cd.......2002-08-22
Breaking Pangaea rocks it hard. This is the cd I listen to more than any other cd in my collection. It has been in my car cd player almost since the day I bought it. Go see them live too, it's even better than the cd because they have so much energy and they're so musically tight. Then you can pick up a copy of their 5 song EP as well, which is equally amazing! Buy this cd now!

Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile, but..........2004-02-28
..WHY isn't this available in the USA?!
There are plenty of reviews elsewhere about the brilliance of Miles Davis's Pangaea, so I'll keep these comments to the Japanese import version. Now this masterpiece has gotten a beautiful remastering treatment, and there's an unmistakable jump in sound quality from the US release I'd previously played to death. The bass is bigger, the percussion is fuller, the guitar wails are more well-defined, and there's a new clarity to everything. Soft parts and nuances that were barely audible on the previous CD edition are now discernible, and this spine-tingling sensory journey to remote savannahs and exotic jungles is brought to colorful life as never before. E.g.: for one section in mid-"Gondwana" you can hear the band verbally egging Miles on during one of his rare solos, which hadn't even been audible before.
Other pluses: the cardboard package replicates the original LP sleeve, for those interested in that kind of thing. (There's nothing in the way of new credits or liner notes, just a montage of landscape pictures and color shots of Miles onstage. There's a note along one side suggesting you "listen to this record at highest possible volume," which of course I heartily recommend too.) "Gondwana" is three minutes longer than it was on the US disc as well; the extension is nothing earth-shattering, but I just have to wonder why anything was trimmed in the first place.
If you want to experience Pangaea at its fullest you'll (fortunately or unfortunately) really benefit from hearing this edition sometime. If you're not quite obsessed, only curious or just not willing to shell out a price that would rival some big boxsets, then let's just hope someone makes it easier and cheaper to find soon. As it is, this version's unavailability is a real shame.

Customer Reviews:
New album drops October 3rd, and before then I thought I should review this album........2006-07-20
New album drops October 3rd, and before then I thought I should review this album. Yeah. This album is great, and Visionaries are nothing but sheer bliss. The music. Everything. 2mex, LMNO, Key Kool, Dannu, Zen, DJ Rhettmatic all of them the perfect flawless harmony of each other. Another great aspect is that the central theme of the album is brought together from many cultures, such as Japanese, Puerto Rican and others. Anyways, if you are getting to Visionaries or whatever this is a great place to start because everyone in this album truly shines, alright everyone. Take care. Peace.
Stay underground 4 life and be true and love everyone and everything.
When October comes you better go out and buy the new album, and I bet that you won't be disappointed because the first single sounds really chill and until October 3rd, later. If you are from LA, and you like this you better be going to Rock The Bells.
One of the best hip hop crews out!.......2005-11-09
These cd is excellent! Fresh, inspiring, and fun. These guys are definitely taking a different rode in hip hop. Meeting of the Minds is awesome.
I like this group (even the underground) because of this album.......2005-10-14
I copped this album over a 1 1/2 years ago, after hearing it in my homies' ride. This homie loves underground hip hop, and I didn't know too much about the underground.
When I started listening to the album, the first 8-9 tracks were very accessible, even to the novice underground listener, but I remember thinking it gets a little shaky once the track count hits double digits.
Infact, since I didn't even know about the Living Legends, "Meeting of the Minds" sounded ok, but really long at the time. However though, after a year and a half, that's probably my favorite track on the album. (As the reviewer 'A music fan' mentions, this track 'pretty much pays for the album' ...I agree...)
Even after owning this album for a while, I still love listening to "Strike" and "DoMakeSayThink."
Overall, I believe the album is solid and very accessible to people that's never heard of the Visionaries. I would suggest this over 'Galleries' or 'Sophomore Jinx' if you are contemplating about getting their work.
Good album could have been better.......2005-09-29
this is more like a 3.5 star release there are mostly good tracks and then there are some tracks that are just plain bad lyricly this touches on many topics mostly political and is closer to LMNOs Economic Food Chain Music with the lyrics. On past efforts the production was handled by dj rhettmatic but its good to see that all of the visionaries are involved on this one I enjoyed some of the tracks on this CD such as Cant Say Love and a few others. if you are a fan I would deffinitely recomend this. otherwise I would say start with the World famous Beat Junkie series and work your way up from there. this was an above average album but I would not go as far as to say it was great.
3 and a half mics.
ThIs Is It RiGhT hErE!!!.......2005-07-04
i love this album, its one of the best albums ive heard along with sage francis and atmosphere. but visionaries stand alone when it comes to their music. this album sends a clear messege of love, truth, peace, humanity etc... the beats are tight, the rhymes are dope, and messege is right. this album is for everyone and anyone who loves music. even if your into that greedy materialistic mainstream hip-hop, this is a fresh breath from the poisoned mainstream. its "feel-good" music for evryone, buy this album you wont regret it ever.

An undiscovered masterpiece.......2000-03-23
PANGAEA is one of the finest world fusion/new age CDs ever recorded. The CD brings together exotic string, percussion and wind instruments, eliciting the sounds and feel of East India, the Middle East, and the Far East. The synthesizers are used to color the songs with just enough ambience to make the music accessible to less advneturous listeners. The overall vibe of PANGAEA is relaxed and serene without being the least bit too "new agey." Listening to the CD is like actually visiting the former supercontinent (which is what Pangaea was before the land masses split apart millions of years ago). This image is helped along by the very discrete use of subtle environmental sounds, such as bird song, waves, etc.
Fans of Asian music, in particular, will find a lot here to enjoy. Flutes, koto, and other ethnic instruments flavor this CD while the melodic content is lush and romantic enough for mainstream listeners. All in all, PANGAEA is a masterpiece. It is perfect for playing in the background during massage or bodywork or while reading or doing housework. Personally, I just sit and listen to it when I'm stressed out and I ususlly always come away refreshed.
Finally, the cover art is gorgeous and liner notes do a good job explaining the concept of the supercontinent. With all that plus the great music on the CD, what else could you ask for?
a time trip back to earth's dawn.......1999-09-27
This was a great experience for me. I enjoyed the music and by closing my eyes I really felt that I could catch glimpses of the Permian and Triassic periods with some earlier ones as well. The musical pieces are arrangements based on asian music: Gamelan(Bali) and Japanese I believe. This is one of my favorite relaxing CDs I use after work. I am looking forward to experiencing his other CDs. I recommend it. I hope this talented artist will return to the Archaeozoic and the Mesozoic themes again! Thank you for the chance to express myself on your service, Amazon.com and thank you Mr Bacchus for the wonderful music!

Album Description
Breaking Pangaea was born in the greater Philadelphia metro area in the late nineties. The dynamic marriage of BP's soaring guitars and sweeping vocals is reminiscent of Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason and even a hint of New Found Glory. The band's powerful live performance is marked by the tremendous amount of energy and emotion pouring from every pore of the trio while onstage. After hundreds of shows, including tours with Coheed & Cambria and Further Seems Forever, and two releases on Florida based Undecided Records, the band crossed paths with Equal Vision Records. Eager to work with each other, the band and EVR formulated a plan to release an EP consisting entirely of rock songs. The EP, entitled Phoenix, was recorded at Big Blue Meenie studios (Thursday, Taking Back Sunday) in New Jersey during November 2002. With plans for non-stop touring in support of the release, including stints with Hey Mercedes and Elliott, the indie-rock world will embrace the band with open arms.
Customer Reviews:
The Worst Part is..........2003-12-08
I was first introduced to BP at a show with Breaking Pangaea, and I was impressed right from the start. All three members are
really into the music which I loved, and the have the essential
front man (Fred) who can sing bitter sweet verses and play
an awsome lead guitar.
The EP Phoenix wasn't as stand out as their live act, but one will find that songs such as "Worst Part" and "Picture Perfect"
are hard to get out of your head. The most stand out moment of the EP is the song "Phoenix" which shows the true song writing
capability of the band (especially the solo section).
