A fascinating illustration of the changes wrought by the waning folk revival, this ample set culls 31 performances from the Newport Folk Festivals from 1963 to '68, surely the event's most vital and traditionally grounded years. While the urban folk culture long looked at commercial country music with suspicion (the feeling was mutual), musical affinities gradually won out. This set captures the excitement of those changes. Hearing Mother Maybelle Carter introduce and then steam through "Cannonball Blues" is alone worth the asking price. The recording quality is rugged in places, but where else can you hear live performances from Ike Everly and son Don, and six full band cuts from Roy Acuff and his Smokey Mountain Boys (including a thrilling "Dixie Breakdown," a banjo set piece for Larry McNeely)? --Roy Kasten

Have this on a cassette a..............2005-08-10
guy named Carl in Maryland taped for me some 20 years ago of this great good-time jazzband.LIVE in a club and the vibes are wild!!.It has all these tunes plus 'Opus De Funk'on there which I didn't see on the lp.It's orginally a RCA Victor LPM 2300 vinyl.Unfortunately,no artist coverage.Done soon after the Newport Jazz fest rioting if anyone remembers when that happened.1958?I have no clue. It's just fun stuff to kick back and jam to.I think Hank Garland is in there,I'm not sure.
I can burn this if ya want me to mail it to you.$10.

Customer Reviews:
After the riot ... great music!.......2003-02-24
That day in Newport after the riot they had great time with fantastic be bop and western swing music. One of the best recordings from Hank Garland actually available, the only one I suppose where you can find together Hank and Chet Atkins, this live session shows also the monster talent of the 17 years old Gary Burton on vibes.
The music here is truly uplifting, relaxed, lovely bebop from 1960. It shows clearly what true jazz was all about before the free jazz delirium (which had some great moments, but a lot of bad too). Standards, blues, bebops, expression, fun, good time.
For those who want to know more, here is the all stars line up: Hank Garland, Chet Atkins (guitars), Gary Burton (Vibes), Brenton Banks (violin, piano), Floyd Cramer (piano), Bob Moore (bass), Buddy Harman (drums), Boots Randolph (tenor sax). July 4 1960, Newport, Rhode Island.
Bear Family music.
