Unique.......2004-09-01
What this is basically is unselfconcious psychedlia mixed with Bluegrass (which is just as noisy as that sounds), with a little touch of more standard "folk" stylings. You could take acid to this. You could square dance to it. You could play it to your buddies and laugh because it's pretty damn funny. You could probably turn Bluegrass fans onto it (although a modern country fan would not be an easy convert!). It's a novelty, sure, but it's also pretty damn good music. fans of the Byrds, or of the Fugs would appreciate this, I bet.
Psychedelic Folk Classic.......2004-08-24
This album is a breath of fresh air for the ears. Out of an era where musical boundaries were being pushed to the limits, this band led the way into new frontiers and remains one of the classics of psychedlia. I didn't know what to make of the music at first listen, but it gets better and better each time I hear it. In the midst of all the craziness are some of the most beautiful although slightly twisted tunes like Radar Blues and Sky Divers. I wouldn't trade this album for all of the top 100 cds currently out. Their next album, The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders is even better. Do yourself a favor and pick up both of these cds and hear what music was like before it became a product of big business and money replaced love of music as the motivation for releasing albums.
terrible third album from rounders.......2004-07-23
in the cd booklet peter stampfel rates this a 3 on a scale of 10. he's being generous. he also blames it on weber. whatever. this is by far their worst album and a total waste of money. 32 mins. long

A bit out there.......2006-11-12
I own the Rounder's disk I + II and can't get enough of it... it's one of my favorite all time CD's. When I saw this disk in a local record store I couldn't resist. Unfortunately I am rather disappointed. There are some great Holy Modal moments, but in general it's just a lot of spacey noise. There are screaming voices and out of tune instruments (things I love on their first albumns), and generally just a lot of annoying drug induced banter. When the Rounders do break into song it's top notch, unfortunately there are few of these coherent moments and they are diffcult to skip to as there are only 2 tracks on the disk. If you like weird Psychedelic jamming, this may be the disk for you. But if you're looking for quircky fun loving folk music, I'd reccomend the CD I&II.
sweet insanity.......2001-11-28
This disc is ESSENTIAL for any, er, student of the 1960s. The originally folky duo of Stampfel and Weber are here augmented by a buncha other weirdos, including playwright/actor Sam Shepard on drums -- he was left out of the photo shoot for the album because his hair was too short -- for an amphetamine-fuelled, spiralling session of chaos and delight. Stampfel now slaps his head at certain creative decisions that the band made at this time, for example, issuing discs without song separation, so that one track bleeds into the other, making, say, radio play next to impossible (unless someone wanted to spin all of side one, say, which is unlikely on a commercial station). I kinda dig this, though. The "narration," so to speak, is at times a little sophomoric, but the songs are a whooping, rollicking, druggy festival, like the chorus accompanying an orgy conducted by a backwoods Dionysius with an enormous erection, a poorly-tuned fiddle, and bad balance. Songs include "IWW" (Indian War Whoop, that is); "Soldier's Joy" (with a lyric about buggering heifers, if I'm hearing it right); "Bay Rum Blues" (which your dog might be tempted to howl along to, if you own a dog); and I forget-what-all-else. It's their finest effort, after the much folkier (and unavailable) ALLEGED IN THEIR OWN TIME. Anyhow - BUY THIS DISC. Originally part of the ESP catalogue. Now if only Elektra would reissue THE MORAY EELS EAT THE HMR, which is much the same, though not quite as inspired...
