I would have given 5 stars to this compilation, had it not been for the cacophonous sounds of the opening number, DIXIE. The rest, taken from two beautiful LP's of the 60's, is simply reverent and inspiring. The orchestra plays with vivacity, the arrangements are breathtakingly elegant... close your eyes and see the fields of grain unfolding in your mind. Perhaps the most beautidul number is HOME ON THE RANGE. It is music-making at its best. The recorded sound is remarkable.

The first two LP albums that I purchased as a boy were "Americana" and "Bless This House", by Carmen Dragon and the Capitol Symphony Orchestra. Many of the songs on this album are from those two albums. His arrangements of the songs on this album are more than tremendous, they are a pleasure to listen to. This is music that will live down through the ages. Thanks to Angel Records for the remaster of these albums. I highly recommend this album to anyone with the ear for great music.

These orchestral arrangements by Carmen Dragon conducting the Capital Symphony Orchestra are very lush and beautiful. The recordings were made between 1957 and 1962, and sound astonishingly fresh and vibrant considering their age. The program is a nice mix of Americana which is hard to resist. A real sleeper that I highly recommend!

    Product Description

    Tucked away in the small villages of the lush Kaçkar mountain region of northeast Turkey we find the Tulum, the traditional bagpipe of the Hemsin and Laz people. This recording captures the unique sounds of two solo players from the village of Hemsin. Murat Avan and Yasar Çorbacioglu, representing two generations, play different styles of Tulum, both following the tradition that has preceeded them for centuries.

    His music was original, while taking bits and pieces from traditional tunes. He really does not get the credit he deserves! I never imagined he meant for some of his songs to be played the way he played them.

    Percy Grainger was a man of spectacular gifts. He was one of the most original composer/arrangers in the early part of this century. He was also a spectacular pianist in an age of spectacular pianists. This amazing CD documents Grainger's formidible gifts. It cannot be over-praised. Both the music and the performances are well worthy of any piano lover's attention. Don't miss this one!

    Single label compilations can often be a boring exercise in marketing, but not so here. This is a thoughtful collection of evocative tracks from the Music of the World catalogue and it works very well as its own entity. Invocations' worldwide viewpoint includes a Kiowa hymn, indigenous and Hispanic music from Peru, the spiritually rich mbira music of Zimbabwe, and Iranian poetic songs. The artists' roster includes well-known names like Cornel Pewewardy, K. Subramaniam, Trichy Sankaran, Hassan Hakmoun, Dumi Maraire, and Ephat Mujuru; but it's the surprise of the unknowns that makes this album particularly interesting. Church bells in Peru, the Alliance West Singers, and Jalal & Soheil Zolfonum offer new sounds. This is a well-sequenced collection of ecstatic high points and subtle, spiritual lows. --Louis Gibson

    This is a great collection that shows how different cultures sing to God and Invoke the Divine in their own unique way. African drumming, South American pan pipes, Hindu song, Native American chanting, and much more. Very uplifting and enjoyable.

    This album is a great collection of tracks that truly get you in the mood to have an elevated frame of mind. They are great for doing yoga to etc. I am an aficionado of musical traditions from around the world and in almost all cases found this compilation's selections to both be authentic and fun to listen to. I usually do not recommend compilations of any sort as they tend to use either very poppy or "cheap tracks" but this compilation shows thought and understanding of the musical traditions it represents.

      This cd features 18 tracks of Turkish Folk Music, most have female vocals, but 3 songs are instrumental. Some of the songs are rather slow, and not great for dancing to, but even still are very nice. The booklet included has a brief summation about what each song is about and has photographs and definitions of the instruments used. The booklet is in English, German, French, and Spanish, and the music was recorded in the U.K. in 1998.

      4 out of 5 stars Classical Turkish folk songs beautifully rendered.......2005-09-05

      If you are unable to find this title it has been re-released as "Traditions of Turkey" by Arc Music (EUCD 1776).

      Accompanied mainly by saz (long neck lute), the performances are beautiful and calming. Additional instruments that can be heard on some selections include the darbouka, def (single headed drums), and finger cymbols.

      The liner notes include the lyrics and translations for the seven songs of love and lament. The first and last selections are lively and the only likely dances. The rest of the performances are arabesque and improvisational. If you love traditional Turkish chamber music this is for you. Aside from this CD, music of this sort is most likely found on a Turkish import recording.

      ...DAMN it's a good one. The first selection, "Hudayda", if listened to at maximum volume, can make you literally want to ride around decapitating people. Whenever you're feeling bored or tired, just blast it over headphones, imagine yourself a nomad warrior or janissary, and feel your self-confidence explode through the top of your skull. I'm giving all 4 stars directly to that track, as all the others are rather uninteresting unless you have a special interest in the repertory.
