Editorial Review.......2006-11-06
"The success of the New Age compilation Pure Moods in early 1997 led to the release of Celtic Moods later in the year. Like its predecessor, Celtic Moods is essentially a New Age collection -- here, Celtic is code for mystic. A few songs, such as the Waterboys' 'Strange Boat,' adhere to the earthy spirit of Irish folk, but much of the music -- including cuts by Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, Ashley MacIsaac, Sharon Shannon, Mary Black, Altan, Christy Moore and the Edge & Sinead O'Connor -- is atmospheric and ambient, evoking the mystical elements of Celtic music. In other words, if you're looking for true Irish folk, go elsewhere -- the [sic--this?] is New Age music with vaguely Celtic overtones, and if you are a fan of that style, there's no better compilation available than Celtic Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide"
Celtic Moods is a good CD........2006-03-20
Celtic Moods is a really good CD. I like it alot. But then again I like anything IRISH. I've lost this CD a few times over the years and this is probably the 3rd time I had to buy the CD and I have no regrets. My favorite song on the CD is probably Ashley MacIsaacs Sleepy Maggie. Awesome song.
WOW!.......2005-11-13
Copared to the other pure moods celtic moods brings you music from Ireland,Scotland & wales
Good CD to add to your Celtic Music Collection .......2005-09-28
I have this CD, and enjoy it everytime I get the change to hear it. I am a huge fan of Celtic music, and this is a perfect CD to add your Celtic music library. This is an album that all Celtic music fans should have. Other Celtic albums you should try out are : Scottish Moods, the Christian "Eden's Bridge" collection, and the Celtic music from Lifescapes at Target.
Another Perspective.......2005-02-15
I have to hand it to the people who compile these CD's for keeping this one real. It is an unfortunate thing that "Celtic" culture has become associated with the New Age movement. Unfortunate because so often what is referred to as Celtic sometimes is so in name only, not to mention the fact that I can't tell people about my passion for it without getting some who roll their eyes. I am pleased to say though that aside from the packaging this is a collection that passes muster as it contains artists who are no less than the genuine article. Granted, Loreena McKennit is Canadian, but she has proven a strong dedication to the genre and when coupled with the likes of Paul Brady, well, let's just say his is a tide which lifts all boats. I recommend this along with any of the Celtic Twilight series as good introductions to this style of music.

dull music for dull listeners.......2005-04-22
There's nothing truly bad about this music it's just that the songs are as predictable as their titles suggest. I think Eleanor should get out more and try and write about something except having her heart broken. And surprise us by learning some new chords.
This one's a "yes".......2004-06-15
This folk/pop album is engaging, original, and emotionally bright. In other words, it's emotional, but most of the emotions it brings out are good ones.
Eleanor McEvoy has a likable voice and the lyrics are easy to relate to.
It opens with a song that'll have you bouncing along in your car with a smile. Then just a few songs later, we get a great "I can't believe I've just been dumped" song. You can't appreciate it until you hear how she expresses the words, but some of the lyrics are -- "Now you want rid of me -- you've gotta be kidding me -- don't you think I want rid of you?" Somehow, she brings a smile to your face even when she's singing about something that annoyed her.
A great album for keeping your perspective breezy!
Very catchy and lyrical.
A winner any way you look at it........2003-07-09
I don't know if Eleanor McEvoy is in touch with her feelings. She's certainly in touch with mine.
Anyone who listens even casually to the words on Eleanor's album "Yola" is sure to find an emotional connection there. Listen closely, and you may wonder if she's been tapping your phone or reading your diary. But no, I suspect the real truth is simply that Eleanor has the soul of a poet wrapped in the body of an incredibily talented singer-songwriter, and the combined package is hard to beat.
The music is simply, but elegantly arranged, backing Eleanor's compelling vocals with her own guitar and fiddle licks, co-producer Brian Connor's keyboards, Liam Bradley's percussion and backing vocals, and Eoghan O'Neill's bass.
A Truly Wonderful Album.......2002-02-21
I first heard of Eleanor McEvoy through her enchanting song "Wisper a Prayer to the Moon" featured in the often played on cable movie "The Nephew." I tracked down her 1996 album "What's Following Me" (which featured that song) and found it to be excellent -- a combination of moving lyrics and haunting music.
I quickly purchased her 1999 album release "Snapshots" only to be quite disappointed -- a very "pop" synthetic sound that seemed totally removed from the previous work.
Yola, her current album and the subject of this review, is a return to the style that made her so appealing in the first place. This is a truly great album that outshines even the best of her prior works. I have yet to tire of this mix of wonderful lyrics and music. This album is an easy "five stars" and I can't understand why she is not more well-known.

Superb display by multi-talented songwriter.......2007-02-17
Eleanor's subject matter is always highly engaging and entertaining. Try "Suffer so Well" on this her sixth album. It is also amazing to find that she plays every instrument on the album except drums, and sings all the backing tracks. These are the art songs of the 21st century.
Don't take my word for it, Google Eleanor McEvoy and check it out!
This album deserves 5 stars!.......2007-02-04
The previous review hit all of the elements of how wonderful this album is - but one disagreement - it is truly a five, not three, star album - one anyone who loves great music would want to add to their collection. One other point - in the description of the album it states that SACD compatible equipment is needed to play the album - this is not the case - it can be played on any type of equipment. Please add this album to your collection - you won't be sorry!
A nice package.......2007-01-24
Eleanor McEvoy
Out There - Moscodisc Records MOSACD303
It is a very welcome back to Eleanor and her new CD. Bravely taking on almost all of the instrumentation and arranging this has turned into a very fine outing. Blessed with a voice that is instantly recognisable all the trademark elements are present. Sharp observational writing that is amusing, music that hooks you on the line and very accomplished playing. This time around she casts her net on, of course love and life, but also on the transient elements associated with our must have world.
The album is split into parts 1 & 2 and has a total of fifteen tracks. Kicking off with the self deprecating Non Smoking Single Female, a song about the difficulties of finding a partner is an amusing and accurate analysis of those rather sad wanted ads seen in many publications.
When you have a singer and writer of this quality it would be unfair to select out favourite tracks but To Sweep Away A Fool, Quote I Love You Unquote and Vigeland's Dream from part 1 are very fine.
Part 2's Three Nights In November is particularly poignant. Fields Of Dublin 4 has the silliness of our material and busy world down pat and The Way You Wear Your Troubles with its simple blues feel work well.
Mention should also be made of brilliant simple covers of Marvin Gaye's Mercy Mercy Me and Roll Um Easy from Little Feat's Lowell George, which are icing on this aural cake. This album has a beautiful sound to the recording, which shows Eleanor off for the fine artist she is.

Simply incredible.......2004-04-08
I buy a lot of music, and I don't always know anything about an artist before I buy... once in awhile I will just nab something off the discount/used rack because I get a good vibe off the packaging... from the smile on the artist's face... intangible stuff.
Sometimes I find that I've bought absolute, forgettable crap this way... and sometimes I strike gold. This album is in the latter category by astronomical measures; lyrically, musically, production, soul, wit, heart... it's total goosebumps. It is one of my favorite albums... ever. I don't have this remastered version... I have the original.
If you are wowed by the best of the best in terms of songwriting, buy one or the other... you will not regret it.

this is an emotional CD. Each song sets a tone and a mood. I has highs and lows. Be prepared to be moved by it. I certainly was.
a great score to fit the mood of the movie.......2003-08-06
this is a great score for "Some Mother's Son"! Track #3 is especially grand because of its wonderful lyrics and theme-which is present in many other tracks on this soundtrack. This is a great buy for anyone who loves Celtic music/ Riverdance/ or just a great soundtrack. Go out and buy it...you won't be disappointed.
Haven't even seen the movie.......2002-12-05
Yep, that's right--haven't even seen the movie yet. I stumbled upon this soundtrack at a used music store while looking for new music to choreograph to. It is an amazing CD, beautifully arranged and orchestrated.
One to listen to over and over again.......1999-12-15
I went directly from the movie to the music store to find the soundtrack! The music was an integral part of the movie, and the soundtrack perfectly evokes the same emotional responses the movie did. Bill Whelan is a musical genius!
this cd is great,if you like Irish music you will like this!.......1999-06-24
From the maker of "Riverdance" comes this beutiful soundtrack to the great movie"some Mothers son". This compelling music brings back all of the pictures from the movie. Ithink the nicest song on the cd is track 3 "the seabird". The first song is great!. If you liked riverdance than you'll love this!

Brilliant songs by "Ireland's best female songwriter".......2005-07-10
Eleanor earned the best songwriter description even with only this album which has some of her most thoughtful material. "Sophie", "She had it all", the dramatic "Did you tell him" are examples of her best work. A superb album.
Follow up to 'What's Following Me'.......2002-12-04
I love this album, every song on it. It's very heartfelt. If that sounds familiar, it's what I said about her previous album. It took a few listens, but it has won me over. I have to say, I get a bit weepy on the song 'Please Heart, You're Killing Me'. It's such a sweet song, and so full of what we have all felt, and it's funny too. So, I ordered 'Yola' today. I look forward to it's arrival.
Excellent Cd!.......2002-07-29
As her previous works this is an excellent cd. Well composed and performed, Eleonor is an excellent musician. May be she is not as famous over the world as many pop musicians but she is very talentous.
Delightful!.......2002-04-14
I could listen to, "More to This Woman" and "Please Heart, You're Killing Me" all day long! I love this artist! I love this album! The lyrics are catchy, but really poetic and moving at the same time. Some are fun and funny, and some, like "Sophie," really just break your heart. The rock/pop style with a variety of instruments that keep this from being straight pop, really catch the ear and keep you listening long enough to pick up the lyrics
Third's a charm... Now there's a fourth!.......2001-05-29
I got this album not long after it came out, having heard Eleanor's first two albums. Whereas her self-titled first album from 1993 was largely led by the acoustic guitar and her follow-up "What's Following Me?" from 1996 was dominated by electric guitars, Snapshots is heavily synthesizer-influenced. This is largely due to the production work of Rupert Hine, known for his work with The Fixx in the 1980s. The ample use of keyboards is a somewhat awkward fit at times with Eleanor's vocal style, but there are several shining tracks on this album that make it worthwhile. "All I Have" is something of an answer to "Only A Woman's Heart", delving into the somewhat melancholy feelings of a woman prepared to face the world alone. "Please Heart, You're Killing Me" is a lively track with a playfully endearing saxophone riff. "Wrapping Me Up In Luxury" is a sensual, romantic song that has a very gentle but passionate air to it. The last track on the album, "Easy To Lose Hope", is ostensibly a song about a journalist who was murdered, but it comes across as an anthem of hope and courage.
....Eleanor released a FOURTH ALBUM on 4 May 2001 called "Yola". It is apparently only available through small online retailers in Ireland. Pick it up if you can find it, because it marks the return of a mellower Eleanor. Gone are the commercial trappings of Columbia Records and Rupert Hine. In their place, Eleanor's sound is more pensive and piano-driven. You absolutely cannot miss the addictive track, "Easy In Love". Get this CD!!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-06-16
I'm not sure exactly what I would call McEvoy's music, but I guess it's mostly rock, or folk rock. Usually her music is entertaining and upbeat.
I've liked McEvoy's other CDs, like 'Snapshots' and 'Eleanor McEvoy', but this CD was a disappointment. The songs were rather dull, none differing from each other very much in tune or beat. The only ones I even listen to are Days Roll By, I'll Be Willing, Slipping Away, and At the End of the Day.
Instead of buying this CD, I recommend buying a different CD of McEvoy's, or try some of Mary Black, Maura O'Connell, Sinead Lohan, or June Tabor's music. You can sample many good artists with both of the 'A Woman's Heart' CDs (where I learned about all artists above as well as Eleanor McEvoy). Good luck.
Do not be Mislead.......2005-09-28
This is without no doubt a five star cd, as her previous works. Eleonor Mcevoy is an excellent interpreter, composer, songwriter, singer. She really has a beautiful voice and also her lyrics are very well written. One thing that I appreciate in her works is her versatility, she can performs different styles witout lossing her esence.
This is just wonderful!.......2005-08-27
I have really come to love this album and Eleanor's lovely voice.
To fully appreciate it, you really need to give it a serious listening in a quiet setting. I admit, the first time I heard it, I was busy with other things, there was lots of noise in the background, and I just didn't appreciate it.
Now, having listened to it several times, I find that I just love it. The SACD recording is first rate and I actually love the fact that many songs are very ambient (meaning that you hear only her voice or only an instrument or two at any given time). I really showcases the difference between a plain CD and an SACD - there is just no way a plain CD could sound this good.
My favorite song is "Ave Maria", which is so beautiful it almost brings a tear to my eye (almost!, I am a manly man after all :)
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...........2005-08-20
It is astounding that the unfavorable and wrong-headed March 29 "review" above has remained for almost five months the sole, unchallenged customer review posted here concerning this truly remarkable recording. (Will some others who have appreciated Eleanor McEvoy's outstanding contributions to music please weigh in here and raise the average to nigh 5 stars, where it certainly should be?) "Early Hours" is a true joy to hear, but not for casually playing in the background. Attention must be paid, and well-spent will be your time in doing so. I am apparently not alone in these opinions, as a recent Irish Music Magazine Readers Poll voted "Early Hours" as Best Contemporary Album 2004-2005. Please remember that, after you receive the copy that you are just about to order, the liner notes in respect of each cut are required reading.
My only complaint is that I find the intro to "I'll Be Willing" to be reminiscent of "Mood Indigo", and it puts me in the wrong state of mind for the upbeat, catchy tune which follows. Apart from that itty-bitty peeve, this recording (both from the artist's side and the audio-engineering side) is perfect.
The Good News--It's Nothing Like Yola.......2005-03-30
That's good news, because it's important for song writers to grow. Unfortunately, with the exception of the jazzy first cut and number 10--Days Roll By--this album is padded with plebian music you can hear any night, any where. If you're looking for a folksy, fresh set of songs, buy Eleanor's first record, Yola. This one is an also-ran.

It is one of my favorite albums... ever. I don't have the remastered version with the extra cuts... I have the original.
If you are wowed by the best of the best in terms of songwriting, buy one or the other... you will not regret it.
Magical songbird; heartfelt lyrics.......2003-06-10
I adore this album and play it sparingly but without self-conscious rationing, and it sounds fresh and inspiring as the day i discovered EM.
I thought she was pretty well known but the frontispiece of Charles 'The Graduate' Webb's clever novel, "New Cardiff", actually asks for contact details so as to rectify the book's lack of proper acknowledgment (and presumably some sort of copyright fee). Since "Cardiff" is shortly to be filmed, with 'Heart' probably prominent on the soundtrack, I have no doubt that Webb's publishers will need to seek no further.
A gorgeous voice to rival any around and a phrasing that's all her known. We can't hear too much of Ms Mcevoy or be blessed too soon with her next album.
An absolute classic!.......1999-11-05
Her first album, the voice is young, but the lyrics are so mature, and the musicallity undeniable. She is a truely amazing artist. I've seen her live and she switches between electric guitar, piano, violin she is just amazing.Songs like "Go Now" "Only a Woman's Heart" (a classic here in Ireland) and The brilliant pop song "It's Mine", will send your heart soaring into the air as you put it on your stereo! She gets serious on "Apologise" where she tackles the whole mine field of domestic violence, but in a very constructive way. The other albums are great too, still, this has a special place in my heart because it's her first. Incidently, she's breathtaking live..... if you can catch her.....
Escuchar con atención "Go now", "Music of it all" y "For You".
One of my favorite albums........1999-06-18
But she is Irish, not Canadian

Customer Reviews:
Production weighs it down!.......2004-05-28
Fantastic performers. I had the pleasure of seeing Eleanor & her band open up for Paula Cole a few years back when she was promoting this album. FABULOUS live performance, excellent musicianship by ALL, and wonderful songs. This album however, sounds as though it was produced in someone's walk-in closet. Horrible, and this weighs down the lovely work it contains. You have no choice, however, if you want to hear the songs, you have to just try and ignore this. But definitely get this CD. It's worth it! I give 5 stars to the musicians, 1 star to the production quality.
Terrific CD.......2003-02-20
This is a high-caliber album. The songs, lyrics, music, performance; all are wonderful. "A Glass Unkissed" makes for a great beginning song. Other standouts are: "Trapped Inside" "Where is the healing?" "Biochemistry" "Twelve Days (the weatherman)" and "Whisper A Prayer To The Moon" One of my fondest wishes is to hear Eleanor and her band live in concert perform "The Fire Overheard" I'd love to hear that Celtic jamming! This is one of my very favorite CDs, recommended to me by a dear friend.
Entertaining, but somehow just a bit too generic.......2002-12-07
Eleanor McEvoy is an Irish singer/songwriter and this is a likable album of rock, comparable to, say, a less alternative variation on the Cranberries' first album. The definite highlight is the rocker "Precious Little" ("Precious little in your life is yours by right or won without a fight"). Otherwise, it's all pleasant and entertaining to listen to, yet there's very little here that doesn't sound like I've heard it before from someone else. McEvoy's voice is like a less-distinctive, thinner version of Sinead O'Connor or the Cranberries' O'Riordan. The guitar playing is fully competent but generic. Even the "variety" in the arrangements seems to have come from a playbook -- okay, this song will have strings, this one brass, this one harpsichord -- rather than from inspired production. Other than "Precious Little", the most original cut musically is the ballad "The Weatherman". Other pretty good songs are "Biochemistry" and "Whisper a Prayer to the Moon".
(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)
Eleanor McEvoy is astonishing........2002-12-04
I love this album, every song on it. It's very heartfelt. Sometimes, she sings of things I know nothing about, but I feel them through her. It's interesting. Some of what she sings about is painful, but it's truthful at the same time. I think she makes me a better person.
Not Very Good.......2002-03-11
This album is disappointing. A shame really because this is a really talented artist. Purchase her debut album (1993) titled "Eleanor McEvoy" for a real treat.
In "What's Following Me", the electric guitar distortion dominates and Ms. McEvoy doesn't allow her strong voice to keep up. In many songs it sounds like she's whispering or singing tired. If you've never heard any material from Eleanor McEvoy, don't let this album be your first taste of her work.
