Before there were khaki-pantsed swing dancers on TV and zoot-suited clubgoers in every major American city, Royal Crown Revue plied their proudly retro sound and look in underground L.A. nightspots. But what began as a curiosity blossomed into a national sensation. With The Contender, RCR are back to claim their title as the Johnny Appleseed of swing. Name-checking the right cultural icons (including Marlon Brando and Bettie Page) and covering a variety of classic tunes, from a breezy doo-wop take on "Stormy Weather" to a hard-boppin' version of the Dizzy Gillespie classic "Salt Peanuts," the group has clearly done its homework. Original tunes such as the single "Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded)," "Big Boss Lee," and the title track rock harder than the songs of the era they mean to emulate but are impressive nonetheless. This isn't the musical equivalent of your father's Oldsmobile. Your grandfather, on the other hand, would think it's just swell. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Royal Crown Review at the TIP TOP of thier game..........2006-08-10

Royal Crown Review is a lcoal Los Angeles swing combo(fronted by crooner Eddie Nichols), that doesn't nessicarily stick to swing. It is not uncommon to hear Nichols singing an Elvis Presley cover, or the band playing a Dizzie Gillespie tune or a rockabilly song. Nichols writes original that sound like "Gangster 40's" he also revives 40's tunes like Stormy Waether and 50's lounge covers like Beyond The Sea, and even r&b tunes like Walk Right In(The Walking Blues). This cd is the most mature the band has ever recorded. It has mostyl originals that do swing, and a revival of Lena Horne's 40's hit "Stormy Waether" but done with a Louis Prima 50's Las Vegas lounge sounding r&b shuffle rhythm(perfect for dancing). This cd also has "Salt Peanuts" a bebop jazz cover, and a Zip Gun Bop reamke. Great cd, great short solos, and smooth as ever vocals. Tight band tight cd.

1 out of 5 stars STICK WITH THE 'LIVE ALBUM'.......2006-02-27

What is this band's obsession with dialogue from gangster movies?-it reared its ugly head on the otherwise excellant 'mugsy's move' and on this it is even more predominant. It just isn't funny-so why do it? it reaches its nadir on 'big boss lee' which was so irritating i skipped the last part. Thing is when the dialogue is dispense with Eddie Nichols has one helluva swing voice witness 'stormy weather' (his version of 'beyond the sea' is the best ever!)and then he gets stupid again. I know it is supposed to go with the charm (sic) of the band, but i find it annoying. There really isn't much to commend this 'zip gun' is pretty ferocious and 'salt peanuts' never really catches fire, but 'deadly nightcall' is plain embarassing. I know Royal Crown can deliver, but please no more James Cagney impressions.

5 out of 5 stars Good, solid contemporary swing album. You'll find no filler here........2005-11-17

Nice album. Great beats, good energy and and nice crisp original sound. This type of swing music, is great to play at parties, from start to finish.

These guys sounds like a modern rendition of the old swing bands from the 30's and 40's. If you are open to hearing something different, that has a pulse, I would strong recommend this album.

Also, if you like this album, check out Royal Crown Revue's previous album, "Mugzy's Move". A great album as well.

5 out of 5 stars Swing On The Wild Side!.......2004-06-02

This will probably remain one of my favourite swing albums ever! The most powerful swing album in the world. That's what it is. You can hear Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded), Big Boss Lee, Port-Au-Prince (about Bettie Page), Walking Like Brando (about walking like Brando), Stormy Weather (another swing classic), Gillespie's Salt Peanuts,... Beautiful! Forget about Cherry Poppin' Daddies and that kinda stuff! Gangster Bop is on top again!

4 out of 5 stars Very solid album.......2003-06-11

The Contender is the Royal Crown Revue's very solid followup to Mugzy's Move. Although there isn't anything as strong as "Hey Pachuco" or "Mugzy's Move", the songs are all very good. This is more of a traditional swing album. One of the first things you notice about The Contender is the increased backing vocals from the band which really works on more traditional swing like "Morning Light", "Walkin' Like Brando", and their excellent cover of "Stormy Weather". The faster tracks such as "Big Boss Lee", "Work Baby Work" and the title track do an excellent job of showcasing the stellar musicianship of the band. There are also some great slower tracks here like "Friday The 13th" and "Everyone Knows You're Crazy" and the very jazzy instrumental "Deadly Nightcall". While the songs aren't nearly as memorable as Mugzy's Move, everything here is good and it's definitely worth checking out.

Celtic Tenors are marvelous. The only "tenor group" offering harmony. The material is beautiful and beautifully performed.

3 out of 5 stars Celtic Music Meets the Boy Bands.......2003-11-09

If one looks at the jacket of the disk THE CELTIIC TENORS, the first impression is that the disk could also be called "The Three Irish Tenors goes boy band." The three Celtic tenors: Matthew Gilsenan, Niall Morris, and James Nelson, look rather young and hip, almost in a stereotypical way, and it is clear that the disk's first priority is to be a money maker. The obvious attempt at making a dollar (or in Ireland a punt or Euro) does not make the disk a waste. There are some very enjoyable musical moments on the disk, though nothing all that original or deep. The music ranges from popular tunes, traditional Irish music, and some light classical and operetta pieces. The musical highlight of the disk is an A Capella version of Barber's Adagio. This arrangement retains the piece's beauty as well as its haunting qualities. Though the song "Mull of Kintyre" is somewhat cheesy, it works on this disk and is one of the better tracks. The disk begins with a song titled "Nella Fantasia" a tune written by Emilio Morricone, and it's from a theme from his score of THE MISSION. According to the liner notes, the composer reluctantly allowed words for the piece. He should have held out a bit longer. The tune was first performed by Charlotte Church. It does not work for her, and it does not work for the Celtic Tenors either. Since the tune is so beautiful in the film, it's too bad it was not simply left alone.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Not Your Ordinary Everyday Irish Tenor Album.......2003-10-02

Currently So Strong is my most favorite album. Unlike other Irish tenor albums I own, So Strong resonates unique total excellence achieved rarely by the blending of voices. It is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary Irish vocal styling. Every cut is a true treasure. Listening to "Mull of Kintyre" I defy anyone not to hum this Paul McCartney melody. "The Green Fields of France" is a beautiful anti war anthem while "Ag Criost An Siol" is as spiritual as any gospel. Tears swell with "The Town I Loved So Well". "Something Inside" has an addictive beat and "The Contender" and "A Love so Beautiful" are haunting without being melancholy. I garantee that you'll have the CD player on high volume and repeat for the folk dance tune "The Star of the County Down" and inspiring "Anthem". I do.

5 out of 5 stars So Strong.......2003-04-07

I was watching public television and saw "The Celtic Tenors". The next day I found their CD, "So Stong". Finding voices of such obvious quality producing harmony so perfectly is rare. The first song brought me to tears and I wanted to stand and cheer. In fact, I did. In my opinion, "The Celtic Tenors" have absolutely clear voices and sing with "Heart" whether it's concerning the town they love or the love they let slip away. I have already suggested the CD to many friends who have immediately purchased one for themselves. What a treat, what a treat.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful mix of songs.......2003-01-15

I bought this on a whim after listening to the 30 second bits on this site. It is now one of my favorite albums. I can't stop listening to it! I walk around all day singing bits from 'So Strong' & 'Mull of Kintyre'. Each tenor is given equal billing & their voices flow together so well. I'm now anxiously awaiting either a US tour or a new album. The first album, simply titled 'Celtic Tenors' is wonderful as well. If you love men who can really sing, you will love this album!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The only reasonable way to get started.......2004-12-23

Okay. Jah Wobble has been making music for over 25 years, but has stayed under the radar in the US. As I have explored his music, I am frequently impressed with what he has helped put together. A lot of it really floors me.

The problem is that his music is so varied that it is hard to get a feel for which albums to buy. His best albums do not have all that much in common with each other except for his distinctive dub bass style. Let's see, there is Umbra Sumus, which I guess I would call world-beat pop. You've got Fly which is electronica. You've got Passage to Hades which is freestyle jazz. You have Metal Box (AKA Second Edition) which is post-punk. I'd be surprised if anyone really like all of it and this anthology is the only way you can figure out which ones to buy.

The reason it gets four stars instead of five is that some of the music is mediocre at best. There was a concerted attempt to draw from every portion from his career, including projects that he would have been better off abandoning. Therefore it will take a little work to figure out which tracks/styles you like and which you don't. I recommend that you be your own editor and trim the three CDs to one or two.

Also, better liner notes would have helped. All the information is there, but it is not as organized and easy to sort through as it could have been.

By the way, if you want some more detailed reviews, check out the UK site at amazon.co.uk.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars DIGGLE JUST KEEPS ON ROCKIN!.......2005-08-06

I really like this guy. Both with the Buzzcocks and solo, Steve Diggle has shown a real consistency of songcraft. He's not averse to adding a few new touches here and there (harmonica, electronics, ballads, etc), but with every release, you basically know you're going to hear some good, solid rock `n' roll. This CD is no exception. It's quite strong through all 13 tracks - not a bad one in the bunch. Lots of loud guitars, a little more "groove" oriented than previously, where he lays down a verse or two, then goes off into a guitar solo wonderland, at times almost approaching Neil Young/Crazyhorse intensity. The lyrics are "personal" (as mentioned in the liner notes by Alan Parker) but vague enough not to be too literal. Rather, they evoke a mood with each song, which you can overlay your own emotional history. Fun stuff, and well worth a listen. Keep it up, Steve!

1 out of 5 stars No Ring of Fire?.......2006-06-26

This is a great movie with an excellent soundtrack. After six years of searching I still cannot find the Carnes / Bridges duet anywhere. I would have purchased the soundtrack if "Ring of Fire" was included, as I'm sure many would have. My one star is for that reason alone. The movie however is a five star at least.

1 out of 5 stars The opening song was "Ring of Fire".......2002-06-20

and it was performed by Jeff Bridges and Kim Carnes. I have looked EVERYWHERE for this song but can't locate it anywhere. I don't believe it's in print. It's a shame because in my opinion, it was the best version of Ring of Fire I've ever heard. Shame on the producers for not including it in the soundtrack.

1 out of 5 stars Ring of Fire.......2002-04-10

The opening song is "Ring of Fire" made popular in the early 60's by Johnny Cash. The movie version, according to the end credits, is a duet by Kim Carnes and Jeff Bridges. Sorry it not on the sound track. Can it be found anywhere but on the DVD/video? I've not found it on any Kim Carnes CD. Haven't heard this CD; the one star is because it omits the best music in the movie. What were they thinking!

2 out of 5 stars Opening Song.......2001-11-28

I've searched and searched trying to find the performer of the opening song from the movie. I believe it is a Cash remake "Ring of Fire." I enjoyed the movie The Contender and thought the soundtrack would include the opening piece. Can anyone tell me who that is?

2 out of 5 stars Contender-Disappointment.......2001-07-21

The Contender movie had some great musical pieces with a broad number of instruments. The soundtrack is all piano arrangements with some strings, not what was played in the movie. The producers of this CD really missed the boat on this one. The DVD has better music from the movie than the soundtrack CD. The composer Larry Groupe is talented and I look forward to hearing more of his work. The CD soundtrack should be withdrawn and reissued with the music that was played in the movie as it was played in the movie.

Product Description

In 2004 the Brindley Brothers signed to Paste Records and released Playing With the Light to overwhelming response from critics and fans. The Washington Post called it "Magical...near perfect...a pop/rock gemm...a superb bid for any top ten list...an early contender for one of the best albums of 2004." Paste Magazine named it one of the Top 12 Debut Records of 2004 (alongside Franz Ferdinand, Jem, and more). Rolling Stone said, "Fans of Wilco and Gin Blossoms will swoon." The Brothers sold several thousand copies of Playing With the Light, received incredible press, toured extensively, appeared on numerous radio and television programs and began selling out clubs regionally and playing some of the best venues on the east coast. The record was on the in-store playlist for Abercrombie and Fitch and other national stores in Summer 2005.

After finishing this amazing album, I couldn't help but conclude that if songs like "playing with the light" or "supernova" got airplay on popular radio stations, the brindley brothers would be huge. "playing with the light" is such a nice, laid-back pop CD that's can be played over and over again. The vocals are wonderful, the music is diverse and catchy; its just fun to listen to. which is what music should be like.

Product Description

Today is Someday, explores Melody Swink's smooth jazz roots, as well as covering songs from her wide repertoire of music affiliations and inspirations, including international jazz legend, Ramsey Lewis, who lends his piano genious to I'm Still In Love With You, and Time. Melody's rich life experience is explored in self-penned ballads like Lover, Broken and the title track, Today is Someday. Her borderless musical vocabulary encompasses songs by musical greats from a wide range of genres; from Burt Bacharach to Al Green, from Melissa Etheridge to Culture Club. Her artistic, contemporary and fresh interpretations are a uniquely new sound that has been likened to the stylings of Sade, the intimacy of Diane Krall, with a an impressive vocal range. Relax and relish the comtemporary smooth jazz CD, or experience the energy of the dance CD, which combines playfulness and sensuality.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for chilling........2006-12-04

Two CDs, one with a smooth jazz theme, the other, house. I'm more of a house/chill/downtempo person, so the main reason I bought this CD was for the "PM" side, which is mainly dance/house tracks.

I work at a popular clothing store that plays a lot of house music, and when I heard this track earlier this summer, I knew I had to find out the artist. Lo and behold, "Today is Someday," by Melody Swink.

I'm normally not that hot on jazz, but the AM side (jazz) is actually pretty good, I don't mind listening to it when I feel like relaxing on the couch and curling up with a good book. It has that soothing, mellow touch, and unlike what the previous reviewer said, it sounds nothing like "Joan Rivers meets William Hung." Granted, Melody doesn't make my list of "top ten vocalists," she has a nice voice, and it works well on both the AM and PM sides.

As for the PM side, with the exception of the electronica tracks, the music has a house/dance touch that's great for driving or a house party. I would have preferred more dance/house tracks over the electronica, the electronica mixes aren't outstanding, and sound pretty trite and commonplace. But, no matter, "Time," "Let Me Be Free," and "Today is Someday" are some of the cooler mixes on this CD. "Come Rain or Shine" is a jazz/drum-n-bass mix, a perfect way to end the CD.

The lyrics aren't amazing or anything, but it's good. The packaging is also pretty sweet, it's a full-color, bound book, something you can probably stick inconspicuously in your bookshelf. Probably the best-packaged CD I've seen in a while.

If you like house or jazz, you can't go wrong with this CD. And at $15.99, the 2-CD packaging is a value.

1 out of 5 stars One star because it is not possible to rate it zero stars.......2005-10-18

Oh, my ears! Joan Rivers meets William Hung.

With all due respect to Dionne Warwick, do yourself a big favor and "Walk on By" this drivel when you come across it. You'll thank me for the money saved. After listening to this, I wish I were tone-deaf. No, that is too generous to this waste of music.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Today Is Someday.......2005-04-22

As soon as I opened the packaging I knew this cd was something different. First, the cd artbook was like none I had ever seen before. It is a beautiful hardbound book that has colorful art, pictures, and even a place to write your thoughts!

Two seperate cd disks, one entitled AM and the other entitled PM offer two different moods to listen to. The AM cd is smooth jazz and for easy listening while the PM side is upbeat dance tracks that get you up and moving.

I would highly recommend this cd to all of my friends and look forward to listening to it time and time again!

5 out of 5 stars SMOOTHJAZZ.COM REVIEW.......2005-04-17

First of all, I must comment on the stunning packaging of this unique double CD... It's probably the most beautifully presented album I've ever seen. It's not in a plastic case, but instead a slick and colorful CD-size book, professionally bound, with beautiful graphics and 40 pages of color photos of this beautiful fashion model turned vocalist, what she likes to call "word votives," and complete liner notes. As for the music, it's divided into both "AM" and "PM" discs, with the more mellow, Smooth Jazz performances on the first one; the party, dance oriented ones on the second. TODAY IS SOMEDAY features Melody's sensuous, dreamy vocal talents (her voice is like a cross between Sade and Sarah Brightman) on a varied collection of both original songs and notable covers, such as Al Green's "Still In Love With You" and Culture Club's "Time," both of which feature Ramsey Lewis on piano and even Melissa Etheridge's "Like The Way I Do." Melody has dedicated her music to those in the world still waiting to realize their dreams, and it's title says a lot about her.... Unique, courageous, driven, triumphant, and inspiring, with much to be shared with others. Relax to the Smooth Jazz CD (AM), and get excited and energized by the "Dance" CD (PM), and display the book prominently as a decorative item on a table-top in your home - It'll brighten the place up a bit! ~Scott O'Brien

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2005-11-13

I listen to this CD all the time and it never fails to dissapoint. smooth flowwing guitair riff, good backup artists. Simply put, a great album!

5 out of 5 stars Coming from a Flamenco Guitar Player.......2005-03-15

The beautiful thing about Kevin's music is that not only does it have great Flamenco guitar, but it has great musical instruments backing it up: violin, bass guitar, percussion, etc. Most Flamenco guitar music that you hear is solely just guitars, but this music is a collection of many instruments that create a combination of Jazz, Pop, and Flamenco.
The Rain in Spain is an example of true creativity from a musician. Its soft, smooth, and sincere sound creates a very relaxing atmosphere for those who listen to it.
I'm a fellow guitar player and I know good guitar when I hear it. I would strongly recommend this CD to anybody who is a musician or anybody who appreciates cool music.
I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Schaelling to ask him some questions regarding his album. Talking to him gave me an good understanding of his imagination and creativity that spawned his music.
Kevin is a great guitar player, and I wish him well on this exciting moment in his career.

Formed in 1992, when Stereolab's debut hit the streets, dallas share many qualities with those Franco-English purveyors of avant-garde Euro-pop. Isolated from Western influence until 1991, this Baltic band developed their own blend of decade-spanning pure pop, rooted in the erstwhile movements of twist, new wave, krautrock, and the early-90's Manchester scene. Borrowing from the innovations of Can, the Smiths, and My Bloody Valentine, dallas proves to be a contender for one of the best underground albums released in 1999. Tracks like "Six for Fix" and "Raj Kapoor" are just one crafty remix away from becoming club classics. --Lucas Hilbert

Album Description

dallas are at the vanguard of the new wave of European bands creating music that transcends those tired old boundaries between "rock" and "pop". How can you label music whose influences range from 60s bossa nova to 70s dub to 80s disco to 90s dance?

dallas have been together since 1992, played concerts in several European countries and made live appearances on European TV. The group comprises: songwriter and guitarist HOLGER, whose day job is translating the speech bubbles of syndicated American comic strips into foreign languages; bass player and songwriter TAUNO who earns a living from selling auto parts; drummer ALLAN whose playing is sometimes difficult to distinguish from a drum machine; and singer KRISTI whose innocent voice purrs and caresses you.

dallas make no extravagant claims about their music. Their songs tell stories about boys and love and suburban life and teenage angst and the pop stars they have met. dallas are not trying to change the world. But they write songs with good melodies - and if they occasionally combine these with a lyric about philosophy or an Indian film director, then all the better!

This is dallas' debut CD. The group arranged and produced the sixteen songs themselves because they failed to discover a music producer sufficiently in tune with the innovative sounds they wanted to create. dallas believe that their last six years immersed in do-it-yourself recording has been well worth it.

dallas say: "If you love easy listening, but you also like guitar pop, dub and 1960s psychedelia (and you go to the odd disco night), then dallas is the band for you to fall in love with. Our music is pure entertainment. It has nothing to do with depressing tales of struggling musicians. Nor does it make you ponder over the injustices of the world." dallas say they are inspired by "the pop wave of the 1960s - Velvet Underground, Can, Syd Barrett, Nancy Sinatra. The most radical people are from that time."

This dallas CD is released by High Park Records, a Toronto-based label dedicated to unearthing strange and interesting music from strange and interesting corners of our globe. dallas were discovered in Tallinn, the capital city of the Republic of Estonia - a small Baltic state to the east of Scandinavia.

dallas are kindred spirits of Stereolab, the Velvet Underground, the Cardigans, Sonic Youth and the Jesus & Mary Chain.

4 out of 5 stars A bit like a Euro version of the "Breeders"........2006-08-19

I picked this CD up from a record store on Saint Marks
in NY, for about a dollar, and was suprised how good it sounded,
even seemed to recall the song "Let's Split" from the radio
sometime earlier (this was in 2000). Anyhow, it's hard to understand the lyrics, but it has a kind of euro-pretension sound to it.. I mean it's casually snobby alternative euro punk.. Like its about something, but it flew over my head, but I like the sexiness of the words anyhow.. I guess this would be called "Intellectual Punk" which almost sounds like an oxymoron.

3 out of 5 stars Odd.......2003-04-15

This is weird German indie music, and that's just what it sounds like. Sometimes the incredible quirkiness is simply too much, but the first part of the CD is OK, but it goes on and on and on, you will pray for the end. Best track is `Let's Split'

5 out of 5 stars Moody.......2000-09-19

This record is so called best of. Its not their debut. Higpark recs. have just found them and now introduces them to the world. And its OK, Dallas deserves this.

"Raj Kapoor" and "Your new girlfriend" are potential hit songs.

For the fans of Stereolab, High Llamas, Sonic Youth, Velvet Undeground, The Cardigans etc.

Just for information, discography (All of them MC-s and first two are rareties, even here in estonia): Easy listening - Dallas meets Zahir (split,1994) , Raj Kapoor (1995), Sleeper's Entertainer(1998)

5 out of 5 stars superb!.......1999-09-13

I have not been this excited about a band in years. I am currently listening to the disc for the first time and am completely enthralled. dallas definitely knows how to write a pop song. Listful, driving, simply incredible.

4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......1999-03-11

I don't know how good this group is. But my girlfriend searched the world for this CD. It might be good from what I hear about them from her.

5 out of 5 stars Lord, what a voice!.......2004-09-18

I'm a complete Irish music junkie, so I've heard an Irish tenor or two. I'll state flatly, Tommy Fleming is the best by a mile. I think he could make me cry if he sang Pop Goes the Weasel! This collection is stunning in its range of emotion, from the heart-filling Lift the Wings to the heart-breaking Only Our Rivers Run Free. And if you can get through his version of Danny Boy without crying, you're made of concrete. I'd never heard that intro before, and I cried before he was half into it. I can't recommend this disk highly enough. Hint to Amazon: please carry more of his recordings!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2004-02-08

I had the same experience as a previous reviewer--heard the music playing in a store in Ireland and fell in love with "Hard Times," which turned out to be a Stephen Foster song from the 1800's, but was oh, so new in this version. Tommy Fleming has a beautiful voice, and every song in this CD is wonderful. This is a CD of mostly ballads, not the Irish pub songs that we see a lot of. I had never heard of this musician before, but I hope to buy more of his work in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD !.......2004-01-23

I heard this playing at a store, while I was in Ireland and had to buy it right then and there. I highly recommend this to everyone. These are great Irish songs. Two of my favorites are Hard Times and A Dance As Old As Tears. Tommy Fleming does a great job, singing Danny Boy. I wish that I had bought it on CD, instead of a cassette, because I am about to wear it out. If you like to listen to Irish songs, order this CD, you won't be dissapointed.
Thank you !
