the concert to be missed.......2007-02-11
If you want clasic Cohen, albums that rank as some of the best music has to offer over the past 50 years, then I suggest buying Songs Of Love and Hate or Songs From A Room or New Skin. This "live" cd was recorded over a six year period and is a labor to listen to, it is one of the few cds I own (out of thousands) that I am very tempted to fast forward. All the brilliant attributes that Cohen brings in many of his previous studio albums from the early days is entirely voided in this live experience. This cd is overproduced and has a slumber like quality, heck, I would go as far as saying that it feels like Spector was behind the production (we all know Death Of A Ladies Man was lame and Leonard acknowlegdes this himself). I would recommend this cd to die hard Cohen fans who must have every cd from his carrer (like myself).
Classic Cohen .......2006-11-29
A recent viewing of the superb "I'm Your Man" inspired me to go back to hear the master in his absolute prime. By any standards Leonard Cohen is on a short list of the greatest living songwriters on terra firma. Back in the days when I could sit cross-legged I listened with reverence to his first album as a wannabee hippie and ever since his songs have taught and inspired me without fail. Here in the Twenty-first century I am still "discovering" songs I missed the first time through, including "Heart With No Companion" and "Ballad of the Absent Mare." Like Twain said about his father "the older I get, the wiser he becomes."
It's amazing that the gospel of Cohen (an aptly titled future show at UCLA) is being spread by several generations, principal among them Perla Batalla who appears here as a backup singer along with the marvelous Julie Christenson. Besides being a great songwriter Cohen became an expert producer and realized he needed more than his, brilliant songs and oak solid voice to carry a show. Like Johnny Cash, Cohen has two notes; low and lower but with the seemingly limitless ranges of Batalla and Christenson alongside him, he is able to express almost every shade and depth of emotion his songs contain. Thus, we have a collection here of true classics, performed with deep passion, in front of exhilarated crowds. It's hard to imagine a better live album in the genre.
Since this recording many of these songs have been brought to light again by contemporary singers, who apply their own stamp but hearing the master sing them from his heart demonstrates his full meaning to each. From the opening strains of a spirited "Dance Me to the End of Love" to the treasured "Suzanne" Maestro Cohen gives goosebumps, insight and wisdom in his words. The music is as good as it can ever be with the powerful voices of Christenson and Batalla working as one gorgeous, descriptive narrator. Despite going on to a stellar career Batalla and Christenson provide possibly the classiest "backup" on record. When you hear the poetry of "Joan of Arc" or "If It Be Your Wil" you are connected to a great soul and great music.
Several Good Tracts.......2006-11-06
At first I didn't care for this cd. but after listening more to it, I've found several tracts which have become favorites: "There Is A War", "Dance Me To The End Of Love", "Who By Fire", "Heart With No companion".
A Mesmerizing CD .......2006-07-18
Okay, I have not listened to a lot of Leonard Cohen performing over the past. I got the Ten New Songs album on LP and there are a few wonderful songs on there. I have an old Best of Leonard Cohen LP with some lovely songs, but I find that the delivery is often too dry. On the other hand, I have heard covers of his songs, one of the best being Joe Cocker's cover of Bird On a Wire from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen live album.
A friend burned me a copy of this CD and I sat down in front of the speakers. The songs and the performances absolutely mesmerized me. I don't find that this happens too often, but when it does, I take notice. Most of these songs are extraordinary and beautifully performed. Yes, his singing is not going to win any awards, but the performances and arrangements are just right, with just enough space to show off his backup singers and musicians.
This LP should be a used as a classroom example of what real songwriting craft is all about, what with all the processed and non-processed, computer generated pablum that exists in the singer/songwriter arena today. I'm generalizing, but name anyone younger than thirty two consistently turning out this many songs of sustained quality.
I highly recommend this, as you might surmise.
buyer beware: all the other reviewers are nuts!.......2006-04-22
Ok, Leonard cohen is a nice little songwriter who wrote a few catchy melodies with good lyrics. I am not reviewing to bash Leonard Cohen, I own a few of his CDs, but I am not a fanatic. However, all of these other "5 stars" reviewers are fanatics, and though they probably feel this Cd is awful in their true heart, they feel somewhat guilty denying their hero a good tip. The album on paper is a nice idea. He selects a few tunes from each album, and in short it could be called "his greatest hits live". To Leonard cohen fans of any sort, that sounds very attractive. However, since half of the songs are recorded 6 years after the other half, there are inconsistencies within the musicienship, and the albums feel. This CD could not be recorded at a worse time as it is filled with cheap, sell out, synthesizers and blazign electirc guitars with heavy metal basses by the backing band that takes out any integirty out of Leonard Cohen's songs. you sort of get the idea that they don't care about the songs that they are playing. It sounds very 80's. His voice has aged a lot and he is rarely on pitch. The lyrics are very hard to decifer without the liner notes, and when you read the lyrics, I have to say, they are quite trite - nothing like dylan or Paul Simon. Honestly people, save your money and possibly get the 1979 field commander tour CD which I do not own, but probably still sounds like Cohen. This is a wasteland.

His other live CDs are even greater........2006-09-11
This is a great Cd, but not as great as is other live CDs. So if you can't afford to buy them all, I wouldn't start with this one.
Great Early 1970's Live Cohen..........2005-12-05
There are 3 Live Cd's in Cohen's catalogue...each with it's own strengths (I don't find weakness in Cohen, he is an unfinished project)
This is the 1st one, an import (bought mine in London) showcases Cohen touring about his Songs From A Room album...on 2 separate occasions in 1970 and in 1972..a couple of unreleased poems and the traditional country Passing Through are found besides such classics as The Story of Isaac, Bird On The Wire with laid back minor accompaniment coming from the likes of Charlie Daniels on fiddle and bass..
Please Don't Pass me By (A Disgrace).......2002-12-03
I first heard this album, in particular, the song "Please Don't Pass Me By", back in ~ 1973. It was on a late-nite FM radio show, on a now non-existent station out of Milwaukee, WI, USA. I'll never forget that song, the emotions it drew out of my soul; shame, sympathy and anger... The whole gamete of emotions that I was capable of feeling!
Leonard Cohen's voice ripped right through my soul, stirring feelings that I found hard to control. The perfect combination of Cohen's voice and lyrics are impossible to describe in this song of Disgrace, only feelings can come close to relaying the affect it had, has, on me. I am so thankful that I was able to find this song on a CD; my Vinyl copy disappeared years ago, lent-out and never found its way back.
I highly recommend this CD to any fan of Leonard Cohen, and to fans of many of the 60's and 70's "Folk" music artists.
Just about 5 stars.......2001-11-11
Although not the world's most invigorating live performer, Leonard Cohen profoundly lonely poetic masterpieces come across on stage well, in their manner. This early, often overlooked live masterwork is something that any Cohen fan will have to own. The live renditions of classics like Bird On The Wire, Story of Isaac, and Tonight Will Be Fine, etc., are competent, but not readily improved over the studio versions. On the other hand, it's the live renditions of previously unissued songs that make this album so noteworthy. Cohen's version of Passing Through has an odd sing-along ominence, and two masterpieces crop up later in the set. The first of these, the 13-minute Please Don't Pass Me By (A Disgrace) is sort of an odd narrative poem set to music, with its sing-along chorus that is undeniably profound. This is unquestionably the high point of the CD, and makes it a worthwhile purchase for Cohen fans on account of it alone. The other is Queen Victoria, a classic poem of his, performed live here-Cohen sings it in a vaguely touching way, a fitting close to the set. Although not the first album of his you should pick up, this is one you'll definately want to own after you've been primed in Leonard Cohen.
RAW & COMPELLING.......2000-08-28
Live Songs is one of his early classics and should be part of every fan's collection. Please Don't Pass Me By with its spoken introduction is harrowing, Passing Through ("glad that I ran into you") is delicate and yearning and Tonight Will Be Fine is unsettlingly erotic. There is an intensity here that complements the studio versions very well, a side of early Cohen that fans will miss out on if they don't own this album. Some of this rawness later manifested on the Phil Spector-produced Death Of A Ladies Man to the consternation of many of Cohen's fans. But it was always a part of his musical make-up, as this album demonstrates. In some ways, Angels Of Light's album New Mother reminds me of the mood of Live Songs.

Customer Reviews:
a terrific compilation for beginners.......2006-02-07
I agree with P. Grupe-for classical music lovers, it is a let down to listen to cut tracks of well-performed classical greats, like Chopin's 1st piano concerto in this collection. Nonetheless, this is a terrific compilation for people beginning to get interested in classical music. This compilation is an eclectic mix of the familiar (Beethoven's moonlight sonata, Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini variation no. 18, Myer's Cavatina, Barber's "Adagio for Strings, etc.), the contemporary (Michael Nyman's The Promise, Horner's My Heart Will Go On), and the truly moving (Bach's Double Violin Concerto, Bruch's Violin Concerto, Schubert's String Quintet in C)-relatively obscure pieces usually left out in less inspired and mediocre classical music compilations. It is gratifying to see that opera music has not been left out. Get this cd if only for the Maria Callas tracks, Lucia Popp's performance of Strauss' Beim Schlafengehen, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's Addio del passato.
"Classical heartbreakers" broke my heart.......2004-06-27
I am an avid listener of classical music, and I purchased this CD expecting to get some of the best classical music ever composed. I guess I expected a bit much though. Although the recording is filled with high quality performances of fantastic pieces, I was disappointed to find that only about half of the pieces are contained in their entirety on this 2-disc set. Songs such as Rhapsody in Blue and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata were not recorded in full for this album, which caught me off guard and bothered me quite a bit.
Anybody who is unfamiliar with classical music will appreciate this album. Since it features some of the most moving classical pieces ever written, it is sure to entrance listeners. And by not placing entire 10-minute pieces on the CDs, it will not run on and bore those unaccustomed to the length of most classical music. However, if you are already well-versed in classical music and can listen to entire symphonies with ease, I would advise against buying this album. I now feel a desire to go out again and find the full versions of some of these pieces, since I feel I was cheated by only getting introductions or short movements on most of the album. Guess I should have paid a little more attention to what I was buying.
A Fantastic Compilation.......2004-05-01
Most of the musical pieces in this compilation are from versions as they appear in various movies. This is Classical music from classic movies such as: Somewhere in Time, Schindler's List, English Patient, The Piano, Platoon, et al. But make no mistake; the music is what's really worth mentioning here.
The title says it all. It claims to have "the most moving Classical music of all time," and they certainly have a case, as it is chock full of the kind of emotional pieces that can easily bring you to tears. This double CD compilation with 37 passionately beautiful pieces is a steal at $16.99.
If you've ever recorded your favorite songs on to tape, or burned them on to a CD, you'll see that this compilation is exactly what EMI Records has done. It is like a greatest hits, volume 1, of poignant Classical music. Almost all of the musical pieces are classic favorites, though there are a few contemporary ones also.
I found the music on this CD powerful and moving as advertised, and I think that Classical music fans should truly enjoy it. It is well worth the price it's being sold for, and I highly recommend it.

Product Description
Danny Schmidt is a writer's writer, in the vein of Townes Van Zandt and Leonard Cohen. This is the kind of album you envelope yourself in at 2am, half drunk; with lyrics on your lap as you follow along line by line. This is Schmidt's first album since moving back home to Austin; the first to draw off the abundant wealth of Austin musicians, with the likes of Lloyd Maines on lap steel, Guy Forsyth on harmonica, Michael Longoria (Patti Griffin's band) on drums, and Bruce Hughes (Bob Schneider's band) on bass. "Parables & Primes" is lushly orchestrated, yet still sparse, with graceful touches of accordion, violin, cello, organ, trumpet, mandolin, and of course, some sweet harmonies. They make for a velvety backdrop - but it's the songs themselves, their messages and their poetry, that sit front and center on Schmidt's records, and this one is no exception.

Brilliant - This is a Real Poet.......2006-11-22
Listening to this collection of songs by Danny Schmidt reminded me of the first time I heard Leonard Cohen. He is a master-craftsman of a songwriter. His melodies are haunting like the best mountain ballads. Try listening to the song 'Stained Glass' on this cd and not feel that you have heard the work of a new brilliant poet.
Best of the Best.......2006-09-28
Just saw Danny perform live in Tulsa this past weekend and bought this CD; it's been in my player ever since. I suppose I'm just due for a long spell of fitting my brain around some hearty wordcraft and smooth picks and licks. There's nothing else to say about this musician other than that he makes you want music, want and love it more than ever. So glad I didn't miss him!
Stained Glass.......2006-02-25
This collection of songs shows musical capability in various styles. Fine guitar work and a melodic, clear and acurate voice. The lyrics contain imagery and feelings that bring great power to this music. Danny Schmidt is unique in many ways. It's fun to me to find that I cannot categorize his music. I titled these comments "Stained Glass" because that was the first song of his that I heard on the radio, and I wanted to hear more.
Phenomenal Album.......2006-01-04
This album is a strong following to Make Right the Time, which is a great album on its own. Danny Schmidt has a rare combination of amazing guitar work, solid voice and moving lyrics. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who has a love of music.
The essence of music........2005-12-30
I live in Austin- the Live Music Capital of the World. On any given night, you can wander downtown and hear block after block of venue after venue playing genre after genre of music. But one of the most memorable musical experiences I've had since I made Austin my home is witnessing Danny Schmidt perform for an audience of less than 100 in someone's back yard.
Danny deserves much greater notoriety for his talent. This album is honestly one of the best collections of songs I have run across in years. It makes me sad that it has one customer review. Two, now... It doesn't seem to bother him in the least that he doesn't have fame, fortune and glory, but it bothers ME. Here is his website: http://www.dannyschmidt.com/ Go there and make him known to thee.
It is evident that Danny Schmidt truly cares about the music that he crafts, and finally getting to listen to him play live was a real and true pleasure... His insight into love and politics and hell, even his battle with cancer, is fresher than most of what I come across. His music is real. It is thoughtful. It is gentle. It inspires genuine emotion. I highly recommend this album, and his others.

hayden, in a forest of sound.......2006-11-15
I will admit, before I write this reveiw that I am a Hayden fan. Something about his music stirs my soul. It could be the simple, yet complex songs. It could be the beautiful, but sad songs he often writes. Hayden is an artist full of contridictions, his voice is scratchy and raw, and really not even that good, yet it fits his music perfectly.
As usual this album is warm. It reminds me of a flanel shirt you put on on a cold, crisp day as you warm up next to the hearth. The recording is good, and this is a live album, so it is not studio tight, but I think that is the point. It is a raw sound, that is often apparent in his studio releases, but here it shines through in all its striped-down glory. It is intimate and you can almost feel his breath in the microphone.
If you are a Hayden fan, I recomend this album. It has a collection of songs from all his previous albums and some tracks that are not easy to get in the states. It is a two disc album, and it would add alot to any music fans library. I hope this helped, and you find great pleasure in this artist's latest release.
A truly memorable live album!.......2003-10-22
Hayden's 2-cd live album is, for the most part, simply breathtaking. As well as showcasing some of his best songs (Middle of July, Between Us to Hold, Stem, etc) it captures some cute and funny moments of singer-audience banter. I was at this concert and loved it, and now I have this album to keep forever. I highly recommend it!
live, breathe music.......2002-12-28
this is a great, great album. I'm so happy he put out a live album. I seen him live last year in Detroit and met him, cool guy. I was a fan before that concert so I was excited to see him. If you don't feel like getting his older stuff, which i HIGHLY recommend, get this. bob dylan, leanord cohen, hayden. another musician that has talent,no, a gift. just him, his guitar, piano and harmonica.
intimate and stirring performance.......2002-11-26
When I first listened to this album I realized just how many great songs Hayden has written. It plays out like a greatest hits CD of his 7 years+ musical career. He is such a strong performer and the recording is intimate. And his in-between song bantor is hilarious. It's beautifully packaged in a foldout digipack and includes a booklet of lyrics with photos. Recommended for all fans of this remarkable songwriter/performer.

Good coloratura work by Elizabeth Futral.......2007-05-27
This is an interesting CD from soprano Elizabeth Futral. The theme of this is a set of operatic arias sung in English, not in the original French or Italian or. . . . I'm not sure how sold I am on the concept, but, after all, it's the singing and musicality that is most important. And, by that measure, Elizabeth Futral does very nicely.
The accompanying booklet begins by noting that (page 8) "The voice of the light soprano has enchanted listeners for centuries." Futral's singing is characteristic of this type of voice.
In this era, any coloratura soprano has two challenges: first, to compare with the past generation's astonishingly talented practitioners, well exemplified by Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sill. Second, though, there are some wonderful coloratura sopranos today against whom others will be compared, with Natalie Dessay and Sumi Jo among the most adept. Thus, Futral will almost automatically be compared with such exemplars. I do not think one could say she is the equal of those four just mentioned, but she does not compare badly either.
From the Wikipedia: "In musical notation, the Italian word staccato (literally detached, plural staccatos or staccati) indicates that notes are sounded in a detached and distinctly separate manner, with silence making up the latter part of the time allocated to each note. The rhythm is not affected. Notes identified as staccato should be played or sung abruptly and short." This is worthy of comment, since the "Bell Song" from "Lakme," one of the selections on this CD, features many such notes. Futral sings them well. Her performance in this work is well done (although it is somewhat jarring, again, to hear it sung in English). She begins with a nice high note and a bang up following trill. She displays good agility and features nice technique on staccato notes. Overall, this is well done. Toward the end, which calls for great ornamentation, she seems a bit hesitant at time, but she concludes with a nicely sung high note.
Other examples of her singing. From Handel's "Alcina," she sings "Come take me in your arms." Her voice is a light, standard coloratura voice (although not all coloratura sopranos have such a voice, of course). She displays considerable agility, a decent trill, and good ornamentation. There is a bit of harshness on a high note toward the close, but hardly fatal to the overall positive effect of her singing.
From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," there is "My soul is filled with love for you" (otherwise known as "O luce di quest'anima"). Her version is not too shabby when compared with such greats as Sutherland and Jo. The cabaletta shows off, again, her agile voice. Good staccato high notes. Nice trills and a well nailed final high note.
Then there is the charming "Son vergin vezzosa" from Bellini's "I Puritani," here entitled "A maiden adorning." Again, nice agility, good trills, well done florid singing technique. While there is some harshness in the penultimate high note, overall, well done.
In short, Futral adds to a currently rich supply of coloratura sopranos, and compares well with the best of them.
At Last a Solo Recital on CD.......2005-03-19
Elizabeth Futral is one of those rare sopranos who seems to put pacing of her career, care of the voice, and commitment to repertoire range ahead of the too early media blitz that can hamper a singer's career. Clearly she has it all - beauty of voice, beauty of physical presence, fine acting skills, intelligence, and interpretive insights.
Having seen her Cleopatra in LA Opera's GUILIO CESARE and in SF Opera's production of Previn's STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE put her high on the list of important new sopranos. This rather strange recording gives samples of her foray's into all styles from Handel to Previn and does a fine job in capturing the beauty of her phrasing and quality of her seamless soprano voice. It is somewhat distracting to place a first recital recording before the public being sung entirely in English, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Futral's gifts. But credit Chandos with the courage to try something different, something that may introduce new audiences to the opera field.
Surely after the recent successes of Futral performances in the opera houses more recordings will follow. Meanwhile this is a tasty sampler of just how versatile - and special - Elizabeth Futral is. Grady Harp, March 05
An Interesting display.......2003-07-23
Coloratura-soprano Elizabeth Futral is a remarkable artist with a beautiful instrument and a most impressive technique. Her appearences in record stores are mostly on lesser known and up and coming labels such as Opera Rara and CHANDOS; with a few performances on DG.
This CD has an unusual semi-personal package. Duets, trios and quartets are featured. The title of the program is called Great Operatic Arias which seems rather broad for a soprano recital disc.
Futral sings well as always, however the content seems to lack a bit of intricacy and polish. Each aria, duet etc leaves you wondering whether or not a bit more time could have been put into this. The arias range from baroque to 20th century; covering four languages.
The entire program is performed in English and this is interesting... Although some of the arias just sound plain strange in English! It is a very nice thing to actually completely and instantly understand what is being sung. I was most impressed with the CHANDOS Lucia di Lammermoor. Futral probably gave her best performance on record in that role. She is astonishingly good on that recording. Her mad scene is awesome!
Overall this is a pleasing recording and Futral dazzles her listeners with her crystal clear high notes and vibrant tone. I look forward to more recordings of her. Hopefully she'll have a chance to record some more opera in its original language. I think that its time for a new Puritani or Sonnambula. Wouldn't she be the perfect candidate?
